Back to its roots: On its 65th year, SM provides shoes to Filipino schoolkids
Millions of children around the world walk barefoot, without access to decent footwear. William Blischke, an American Sociology professor at the California State University Dominguez Hills, said in a study that 14 percent of the earth’s inhabitants lack shoes or have inadequate footwear. In some developing countries, shoeless children cannot attend school because they may communicate and contract diseases from their foot sores. Hence, some international non-profit organizations say the lack of shoes is one of the most visible signs of poverty. In the Philippines, a 2023 report by the Department of Education acknowledged Filipino children’s lack of access to resources as among the most pressing issues in the basic education system. School shoes are an integral part of a student’s uniform even in public schools; the lack of shoes will leave children ill-equipped to complete their education. This is the challenge the SM Store intends to address through the Share Shoes campaign — to provide school shoes to poor Filipino students, in line with the celebration of SM’s 65th founding anniversary. With the help of its dedicated customers and partner-organizations, SM Store aims to donate more than 16,000 pairs of shoes to last-mile schools and communities in the country. With a minimum of P3,000 single-receipt-spend at any SM Store, a customer is entitled to donate a pair of shoes, originally retailing for P299, for only P65, and the customer will be considered a “Share Shoes Champion.” Dhinno S. Tiu, executive vice president of SM Store, explained the value and symbolism of shoes for both SM and its advocacy to support the community: “Shoes have been the core of our business for over 65 years. Thus, giving out thousands of shoes to Filipino children who need them the most through the generosity of our customers is a symbolic gesture of our commitment to continue to live the legacy of sharing and giving back to our partner communities.” SM Store hopes that these pairs of shoes would help children toward a better life. Through the simple act of giving shoes to underprivileged kids, they may be able to learn, play and flourish in school. By protecting their young feet, they can confidently step, walk, run and leap toward their individual goals and dreams. Customers may shop at their favorite SM Store from 1 September to 15 November 2023 to support a child in need. For only P65, help transform a life by being a “Share Shoes Champion.” The post Back to its roots: On its 65th year, SM provides shoes to Filipino schoolkids appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
MAL state visit nets $200M in investment commitments and pledges
MALAYSIA – President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Thursday said that his three-day state visit to Malaysia generated more than $200 million in investment commitments after Malaysian business leaders pledged to expand their investments and operations in the Philippines. In his speech at the Philippine Business Forum, Marcos said all of the investment commitments of the Malaysian business leaders will have valuable contribution to the economic growth of the Philippines. President Marcos added that Malaysian business leaders have expressed keen interest in investing in the food processing industry, multi-service digital platforms, aviation, aviation maintenance support services, logistics, manufacturing, infrastructure, water, and wastewater treatment in the Philippines. “I had the benefit of meeting a number of Malaysian businesses in the key sectors of agriculture, transportation, and technology,” President Marcos said. President Marcos said that the insights from the meetings have further convinced him that the Philippines and Malaysia are moving in the right direction, with structural changes that will establish the Philippines as the ideal investment partner for Malaysian businesses. “The investments that we have agreed on so far will inject a total of about $285 million, serving as a robust and affirmative indication of the ongoing trust and keen interest of businesses and investors in the Philippines,” President Marcos said as he thanked the businessmen for their trust and confidence in the Philippines. During the meeting, the chief executive emphasized that the Philippines has shown healthy signs of economic recovery amid the global challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, as he noted that the Philippines registered 7.6 GDP growth last year. President Marcos added that the Philippines is one of the best-performing economies in the Asia Pacific Region. Marcos, citing government data, said the Philippines outperformed its peers in the region by posting the gross domestic product growth of 6.4 percent for the first quarter of this year, which is within the country’s 6 to 7 percent target for the year. “The reason that we put such emphasis on the growth figures is that as all the countries have gone into debt, a higher rate of debt-to-GDP because of the pandemic and the costs of the pandemic response…for all the countries. It is our fundamental theory that we should grow out of that debt,” he added. The chief executive assured the business leaders of the Philippine government’s commitment to continue its support not only to prospective Malaysian investors but also to the Malaysian companies presently doing business in the Philippines. President Marcos added that his administration continues to seek ways to ensure a conducive business environment for foreign investors as he bared the business-related policies aimed at simplifying procedures and shortening processing periods to ensure ease of business in the Philippines. The measures passed include the Retail Trade Liberalization Act amendments, the Foreign Investments Act, the Public Services Act amendments, and the Renewable Energy (RE) Act, which opened up sectors including air transport, telecommunications, shipping, retail, and renewable energy projects through foreign ownership. “We have made our (corporate taxation system) more business-friendly with a lowered tax rate and improved mechanism for tax and incentives. We continue to seek ways to facilitate and expedite investments. We have recently established what we refer to as green lanes for strategic investments as a means to establish a whole-of-government approach to facilitate at the highest level of government the critical investments necessary for the development and competitiveness of our economy,” President Marcos said. “Essentially what we refer to as green lanes are….since while we are waiting for the many more amendments, especially taxation, legislation, procurement, accounting, all of these things that have to be modernized, we have created these green lanes to facilitate prospective investors in going through the process, going through the documentary requirements,” he added. President Marcos joined a roundtable meeting with the Malaysian business leaders organized by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) through the Philippine Trade and Investment Center – Kuala Lumpur during his three-day state visit to Malaysia. BMI-Fitch expects GDP share to narrow to 4.0 percent from 4.7
The Philippines' external sector is likely to stabilize in 2023, but it will remain far from its usual health due to weak demand for exports, a research firm said on Wednesday. In a commentary, BMI, a unit of Fitch Solutions, expects the Philippine current account deficit as a share of gross domestic product (GDP) to narrow to 4.0 percent of GDP in 2023 from 4.7 percent previously after final numbers from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) recorded a shortfall of 4.4 percent in 2022. "Our forecast is broadly in line with the BSP's projections. However, this would still leave the deficit much wider compared to historical standards," BMi wrote. BMI also noted that the current account shortfall averaged 0.4 percent in the five years preceding the pandemic, or from 2015 to 2019. It added that the Central Bank already showed the current account deficit narrowing slightly from 4.4 percent of GDP to 4.3 percent in the first quarter of 2023. BMI believes this trend will likely continue for the remainder of the year. "Lower import bills on the back of softening energy prices, coupled with resilient remittance inflows, will support the current account," BMI wrote. "However, lackluster global growth will constrain Philippine exports, which will keep the current account shortfall elevated relative to historical standards," BMI added. BMI expects the country's exports as a share of GDP to fall from 24.3 percent in 2022 to 23.4 percent in 2023 based on the critical assumption that global growth will be lukewarm throughout the year. The Fitch Solutions unit's global team expects the global economy to expand by a paltry 2.2 percent in 2023 from 3.1 percent in 2022. "More specifically, we expect the US, which is the Philippines' largest trade partner, to enter a mild recession in late-2023," BMI said. "Mainland China's reopening has also failed to yield the much-anticipated boost to Philippine trade, especially as the economic recovery has started to show signs of stalling there," BMI added. The latest BMI data showed that export growth contracted by 20.2 percent in May, deepening from a 9.1 percent drop in April. This marks the fifth month of falling shipments and the steepest decline since May 2020. BMI also expects the country's imports as a share of GDP to slow slightly to 35.9 percent in 2023 from 37.7 percent. But it will still be higher than the 2013-2019 average of 32.0 percent of GDP. "We also expect remittance inflows to remain resilient in 2023, which will support the current account," BMI added. The Fitch Solutions unit pointed out that remittances have always contributed to the Philippines economy, accounting for an average of nearly 10.0 percent of GDP per annum in the last decade. Despite the global economic downturn, BMI expects current transfer growth to remain stable at 3.0 percent year-on-year as remittance inflows tend to be countercyclical. Cervical cancer: Understanding a fatal female disease
Health and beauty retailer Watsons encourages the public to stay protected against cervical cancer. In the Philippines, cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among Filipino women, especially those aged 15 to 44 years old. About 7,897 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer yearly and from that number, 4,052 of them succumb to the disease. What’s more, cervical cancer also puts women at higher risk of miscarriage and infertility. Certain strains of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) are the main cause of cervical cancer. It’s the most common sexually transmitted infection. Sexually active people, even with just one partner, can get HPV. This can be passed on even when they have no signs or symptoms of the infection. Fortunately, HPV is a vaccine-preventable disease. Symptoms Cervical cancer starts in the cervix which connects the vagina, the birth canal to the upper part of the uterus. Commonly known as the womb, the uterus is where a baby grows during pregnancy. Anyone with a cervix is at risk for cervical cancer, and the risk grows with age as this occurs most often n people aged over 30. Unfortunately, cervical cancer may not show signs and symptoms in its early stages. More often than not, it’s already in the advanced stage when there’s bleeding or discharge from the vagina that is abnormal for you, including bleeding after sex. If you start noticing any of these signs, immediately see your doctor. The symptoms may be caused by something else, but the only way to know you have cervical cancer is to see your doctor. Prevention Schedule your regular screening tests with your doctor. The Pap test, commonly known as Pap smear, looks for precancerous cells. You can also have a regular HPV test since it looks for the virus that can cause these cell changes. But the greatest preventive measure against cervical cancer is the HPV vaccine. The HPV vaccine not only protects you against the types of HPV that cause cervical cancer but also the types of HPV that cause vaginal and vulvar cancers. This vaccination is recommended for preteens aged 11 to 12 years old but can be given at age nine, with your family doctor’s go signal. If you missed the HPV vaccine in your preteen years, you can still get it until 26 years of age. Although it’s not recommended for everyone older than 26, you can still talk to your doctor about it and get vaccinated until 45 years old. Cancer is a life-altering disease that everyone wishes to avoid. To ensure that the women in our lives live long and happy lives, we must encourage them to prioritize their health and choose to be protected against all preventable diseases. As every Filipino’s health partner, Watsons makes it easier for you to have a good quality of life. You can easily schedule your HPV vaccination through the Watsons Health Hub or visit any of the 1000+ Watsons stores nationwide and ask their pharmacists. On your vaccination day, a free doctor’s assessment is included in their service. Stay Protected Through Watson’s network, they’re able to provide different products and services to ensure overall health and wellness through accessible and affordable means. From 15 June to 15 July, Watsons Hub in SM North Edsa The Grand will offer free teleconsultation services to Watsons Pharmacy customers. In partnership with The Medical City, the teleconsultation can provide patients with enhanced remote care through in-depth, physical examinations, such as checking the heart rate, lung sounds, throat exam, ear exam and taking temperature. After getting your diagnosis, you can buy the doctor’s prescription at the Watsons Pharmacy beside the clinic. Marcos signs Malampaya gas field contract extension
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Monday signed an agreement to extend the contract for the Malampaya gas field to ensure that the remaining gas reserves are used and that the country has a stable supply of energy. The Malampaya Service Contract No. 38 (SC 38) was originally set to expire in 2024, but the extension will allow the field to continue producing gas for an additional 15 years or until 2039. “This is the key to our drive to energy security and calculated to advance the nation’s energy interest. This project will reduce our dependence on oil imports while ensuring a stable supply of energy,” Marcos said during the signing ceremony in Malacañang Palace. “It is consistent with the Constitution and our state policy of hastening discovery and production of indigenous petrol. As we renew the contract, we look forward to the continued production and utilization of the remaining reserves of the Malampaya gas field as well as further exploration and development of untapped depot,” he added. Marcos said the renewed SC 38 would generate more revenues for the government, given that the Malampaya gas project has generated a total of P374 billion of revenues. The Chief Executive also assured that the government will continue to generate revenues from the project through a favorable sharing scheme with the government's private sector partner because of the contract renewal. “We are confident in the capability of the SC 38 consortium in handling this project,” he added. Meanwhile, the Department of Energy said that the discovery of additional reserves in the Malampaya gas field would boost the country’s quest for energy security. “It is also expected to encourage opportunities for further exploration in the country, which to date remains underexplored, and to add to the Philippines’ energy portfolio," DOE added. The Malampaya SC 38 is a natural gas field located in northwest of Palawan. It covers an area of around 830 square kilometers. It also supplies natural gas to five power plants in Luzon, the country's largest island. The agreement to develop the Malampaya gas field was first awarded to Shell Philippines Exploration in 1990. In 2022, Shell sold its 45 percent stake to Enrique Razon's Prime Infrastructure Capital Inc. Dennis Uy's Udenna Corp holds another 45 percent stake, after acquiring it from Chevron. The state-owned PNOC Exploration Corp holds the remaining 10 percent. The new agreement to extend the contract for the Malampaya gas field requires the contractors to conduct a minimum work program consisting of geological and geophysical studies and the drilling of at least 2 deep water wells from 2024 to 2029. This will ensure that the remaining gas reserves are utilized and that the country has a stable energy supply.
