PBA: NLEX completes pre-season tourney sweep

JR Quinahan played the hero’s role for NLEX in the waning seconds of the payoff period as the Road Warriors escaped with a 104-97 win over Phoenix on Friday to complete a clean sweep of the Phoenix Super Basketball pocket tournament at the Upper Deck in Pasig City. Protecting a slim three-point lead, 100-97, with just 44 ticks left on the clock, Quinahan sank a backbreaking jumper before Will McAloney hammered the final nail in the coffin of the Fuel Masters with a steal and a lay-up to seal NLEX’s third win. Quinahan, who led Road Warriors with 15 points, helped NLEX quell Phoenix’s uprising from a 21-point deficit in the third. Philip Paniamogan got 13 markers and seven rebounds while Bong Galanza had 10 points for the Road Warriors. The Fuel Masters closed the tourney with a 1-2 slate. Jason Perkins had 23 points while Matthew Wright and Jorey Napoles got 20 markers apiece for Phoenix.   Box scores: NLEX (104) --- Quinahan 15, Paniamogan 13, Soyud 12, Alas 10, Galanza 10, Ighalo 9, Miranda 8, McAloney 8, Fonacier 7, Varilla 6, Porter 4, Baguio 2, Lao 0, Paredes 0. MPBL: Bacoor breezes past GenSan in Game 1 of quarters

BACOOR CITY -- Playing in front of its home fans, second seed Bacoor City put up an inspired performance, devouring seventh seed GenSan-Burlington, 95-72, to take a 1-0 edge in the 2020 Chooks-to-Go MPBL Lakan quarterfinals, Wednesday at the Strike Gym here. The Strikers were scorching right from the get-go, rolling to a blistering 20-4 start, eight coming from Datu Cup MVP Gab Banal while dishing three dimes, and never looked back, with their advantage never dwindling down to eight points. High-leaping Nick Demusis put the exclamation point in the contest with a one-handed tomahawk dunk to give his side its biggest lead of the game at 23. Reigning MVP Gab Banal top-billed for the Strikers with 20 points, 11 assists, three rebounds, and two steals. "Our last game against GenSan, their guards got going early. That's why we neutralize the ability of their guards to attack us inside," said Bacoor coach Chris Gavina, recalling their hard-fought 87-75 win last January 20. Michael Mabulac added a double-double of 15 markers and 12 rebounds while Oping Sumalinog had 13 points, five boards, three dimes, and three steals. Guards Ian Melencio and RJ Ramirez also contributed 10 points apiece. Robby Celiz paced GenSan with 17 markers and eight rebounds while Pamboy Raymundo delivered 16 points and nine boards. Mikey Williams chalked up 15 markers in 18 shots, to go with eight dimes and five boards. The Strikers look to advance to the next round when they face the Warriors on Monday, February 24, at the Basilan City Gymnasium. PBA: OK kami ni Coach Yeng -- Erram

Poy Erram extinguished rumors that he and head coach Yeng Guiao are not seeing eye to eye amid the trade talks that would ship the NLEX big man to TNT Katropa. The 6-foot-7 reigning Defensive Player of the Year on Wednesday set the record straight that there is no truth in the issue. “’Di totoo ‘yun,” said Erram after the Road Warriors’ 104-89 win over Alaska in a pocket tournament at the Upper Deck in Pasig City. “Basta di totoo yun, OK kami ni Coach Yeng.” “Nagkwentuhan pa nga kami kaninang umaga eh,” he added. “Masaya kaming dalawa. Wala kaming alitan. Never kaming magkakaroon ng ganoon.” Erram is in the midst of a three-team trade talks with TNT Katropa and Blackwater as conduit that has undergone some revisions. Rumors arose that his transfer was due to a falling-out with a very volatile Guiao, who gave Erram an earful in one game last year. “So just to set the record straight, wala kaming pinag-awayan ni Poy,” said Guiao, who said in a previous interview that he doesn’t want to see Erram shipped to another team. “You can ask him if he's happy here or if he's not.” “But we are happy with him, I think he's happy with us. That's not the reason for the trade,” added the mentor. Erram still joined NLEX in their training and tune-up match although he sat out the match against the Aces. “Wala pa rin naming lumalabas na kahit ano kaya hangga’t walang lumalabas pupunta pa rin ako ng maaga [sa practice], shooting. Ginagawa ko pa rin anng daily routine ko” said Erram. “Siyempre ayoko naman na magtanga-tangahan din, maghintay-hintay din [kasi] mawawala rin ako sa kondisyon. Kasi if ever na di matuloy, tuloy ako sa NLEX walang problema.” For Guiao, Erram, who averaged 11.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks in his first year with NLEX after moving from Blackwater, is still a Road Warrior. “We still consider him as part of the team until may final ano na run sa trade. But we're just trying to relish our last few days together,” said Guiao. “Siya talagang nagpupunta siya sa practice, gusto niya pa makasama ‘yung mga teammates niya even though he knows there's a pending development.” “But he comes to practice really just really doesn't miss anything even itong game hindi niya alam kung maglalaro siya o hindi, dumating pa rin siya. This morning we had an 8-10 practice, andun pa rin siya,” Guiao added. Pending the final decision, Erram still knows what team he is with. “Alam ko kung saang team ako, NLEX pa rin ako eh. Yun pa rin ang team na gusyto ko. Yun pa rin ang gusto ni coach Yeng. Hanggang ngayon NLEX pa rin,” he said.   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

NBA: Miami s Jones wins slam dunk contest; Hield tops 3-point shootout

CHICAGO (AP) —  Miami Heat forward Derrick Jones Jr. celebrated his 23rd birthday by winning the All-Star Slam Dunk Contest, edging Orlando Magic forward Aaron Gordon in a memorable showdown that required two tiebreaker jams. Jones and Gordon each got a perfect 50 on both of their dunks in the final. Then they got two more perfect scores on their first jam in the dunk-off. Jones then took off from just inside the foul line and threw down a windmill jam with his left hand, drawing a 48 from the panel of five judges. After a short discussion with Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal, Gordon brought out 7-foot-5 Boston Celtics rookie Tacko Fall and positioned him near the basket. He then took the ball from Fall's hands on his way to a thunderous dunk. The United Center gasped as the courtside NBA stars celebrated. But Gordon was awarded a 47, giving the victory to Jones. Gordon also lost a memorable dunk contest to Zach LaVine in 2016. Earlier, Sacramento Kings guard Buddy Hield made a late surge to win the NBA 3-Point Contest. Hield nailed a two-point money ball from the corner to finish with 27 points, edging Phoenix Suns All-Star Devin Booker by one in the final round. Hield is one of the few bright spots for struggling Sacramento, averaging 20.4 points while shooting about 39 percent from 3-point range. Washington's Davis Bertans opened the second and final round with a 22, before Booker eliminated him. Defending champion Joe Harris of the Brooklyn Nets and Chicago's Zach LaVine were eliminated after they failed to crack the top three in the first round. Five racks with five balls each were set up around the perimeter — two in the corner, two on the wings and one up top. Four of those racks had four balls worth one point each plus a multi-colored two-point ball. The other had nothing but moneyballs. There were also two green balls worth three points set up six feet behind the 3-point line......»»
