SEA Games: PHI, Indonesia joust for semis position in men s volleyball

Already assured of a spot in the semis, the Philippines primes up for the next round when it clashes with Indonesia on Friday to end the 30th Southeast Asian Games men’s volleyball Pool B elimination round at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City. Both the host team and Indonesia are unbeaten after two outings making their 6:00 p.m. match a crucial clash for their seeding in the crossover Final Four against the squads advancing in Pool A. The match will air live on ABS-CBN S+A Channel 23, ABS-CBN S+A HD Channel 166, iWant and via livestream. The Nationals made history on Wednesday after knocking out 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games bronze medalist Vietnam out of medal contention with a straight sets shocker. The win propels the Philippines closer to its goal of ending a 28-year medal drought. But the Nationals need not to relax as the match against the crisp-hitting Indonesians will determine their road to the podium.   “Una siyempre kailangan makuha namin [ang panalo] para makaiwas kami sa Thailand,” said PHI head coach Dante Alinsunurin, talking about avoiding an early clash with defending four-time champion Thailand in the semis. Just like the Philippines, the Indonesians swept their first two games against Vietnam and Cambodia. “Importante lang talaga ang gagawin namin sa paglaro sa Indonesia and dapat ready kami lagi. A-game talaga ang importante sa laro na yun. Di kami dapat mag-relax sa sitwasyon,” added Alinsunurin. Meanwhile, semis-bound Thailand and Myanmar faceoff at 1:00 p.m. as they joust for position in the Final Four. Vietnam and Cambodia meet at 3:30 p.m. to end their group stage campaign.     --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

SEA Games: After missing NU’s 6-peat, Jack hopes for gold with Gilas women

MANILA — One of National University’s basketball anchors, Jack Animam missed the Lady Bulldogs’ crowning glory in the UAAP after she was out when her team completed an undefeated 6-peat. Suffering an eye injury during the FIBA Olympic pre-Qualifying tournament in New Zealand, Animam wasn’t around for NU’s 95th and 96th straight victories in the UAAP to extend an unbeaten dynasty. Now fully healthy and back in action for Gilas Pilipinas women, Animam wants to make up by winning a gold medal in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games. She’s certailnly off to a good start after the Philippines beat previous SEA Games tormentor Indonesia Thursday at the MOA Arena, 63-56. “2-3 weeks ago nandito yung collegiate team ko, nag-champion sila without me. Syempre gusto ko rin ma-emulate kung ano yung nagawa nila without me,” Animam said. “But with Gilas women. Gusto ko mag-gold. Gusto ko manalo para sa lahat ng mga taong sumusuporta samin,” she added. Animan has a habit of predicting wins — and she’s right pretty much all the time — but for 5x5 basketball in the SEA Games, she won’t make one. [Related: SEA Games: Animam predicts 3x3 gold for Gilas women] Instead, she says Gilas women will keep their focus as they know winning gold here will not be as easy as just speaking it into existence. Unlike the men’s team, the Philippine national women’s team has never won a gold medal in SEA Games basketball. At least not yet. “Basta ngayon ang masasabi ko lang, one game at a time kami,” Animam said. “Di kami pwede maging complacent, di kami pwede maging relaxed. One game at a time, papakita namin kung bakit yung women’s basketball nandito, and we will stay,” she added.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

SEA Games: Pinay spikers to give Thais a match to remember

In what could be the last Southeast Asian Gams stint of three of Thailand women’s volleyball’s most popular players, the Philippines vows to give the powerhouse team a match to remember. The Nationals remain in high spirits despite an early heartbreak and are looking forward to a better showing against the 11-time defending champions of the biennial meet on Thursday at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City. Game time is at 6:00 p.m. and will air live on ABS-CBN S+A Channel 23, ABS-CBN S+A HD Channel 166, iWant and via livestream. After suffering a five-set setback at the hands of Vietnam in their competition opener last Tuesday, the Filipinas are hard-pressed to win their next two games for a chance to vie for the gold medal. But it will be an uphill climb as they will need to get past Thailand and its vaunted seasoned trio of Pleumjit Thinkaow, Wilavan Apinyapong and Nootsara Tomkom. “Excited kami, kasi last ASEAN Grand Prix, nakakuha kami ng isang set sa kanila, so ibig sabihin, kaya, may pag-asa, going against them,” said PHI team captain Aby Marano. “Gagawin namin 'tong motivation against them.” The skipper adds that this will be a memorable game for the home team especially with the possibility of the three veteran Thai players seeing action in the SEA Games for the last time. “Susulitin namin siyempre kung last playing year na rin nila Pleumjit, Nootsara, and Wilavan, why not makipagbakbakan kami doon,” said Marano. “Para lang at least matapos man yung career nila, tumatak man lang sa isip nila na, itong mga players ng Pilipinas, nag-improve na 'to from the first time na nakita namin silang maglaro ng volleyball since 2015 sa SEA Games.” The Philippines needs to hurdle Thailand, which destroyed Indonesia in straight sets, and the Indonesians on Saturday to advance to the gold medal round. A loss will relegate the Nationals to the battle for bronze medal.   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

Man City finds stride in 4-1 victory vs Burnley; Palace wins

LONDON (AP) — After the lights went out in the changing room, Manchester City finally found a way to shine on the pitch again. City bounced back from its disappointing draw at Newcastle by beating Burnley 4-1 in the Premier League on Tuesday, displaying the kind of fluent attacking play that has often eluded Pep Guardiola’s team lately. Gabriel Jesus scored twice for City, which arrived at Turf Moor to find that the lights weren’t working in the away dressing room. The club tweeted out a picture of a black screen to make light of the situation, and the team then made light work of Burnley as well. Jesus curled in the opener in the 24th minute and doubled the lead just after halftime. Rodri added the third with a thundering volley into the roof of the net from 20 yards out in the 68th before substitute Riyad Mahrez netted his 50th Premier League goal in the 87th. Burnley's Robbie Brady grabbed a late consolation goal for the host. City had won just one of their last five games in all competitions but moved into second place above Leicester ahead of its game against Watford on Wednesday. It also cut Liverpool’s lead to eight points ahead of the Reds’ game against rival Everton in the Merseyside Derby on Wednesday. And Rodri insisted the defending champion hasn’t given up hope of catching Liverpool. "Until the maths say another thing we have all the chance of winning the Premier League,” Rodri said. "We don't see the best version of Manchester City until now." TEN-MAN PALACE WINS In Tuesday’s other game, substitute Jeffrey Schlupp scored in the 76th minute as 10-man Crystal Palace beat Bournemouth 1-0 to provisionally move up to fifth. Roy Hodgson's side played a man down for 71 minutes after Mamadou Sakho was sent off for a rash tackle, but Palace’s makeshift back four produced a solid display to see out a second straight win. Bournemouth, meanwhile, has now lost four games in a row. Sakho was making just his second league start of the season and recklessly caught Adam Smith high on the knee when sliding in for a tackle in the 19th minute, causing referee Anthony Taylor to show a straight red card. Palace then had another setback when Patrick Van Aanholt sustained a hamstring injury and had to be replaced by Schlupp. That meant Palace had center-back Martin Kelly playing on the right of the back four, midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate at the heart of defense and Schlupp — usually a winger — filling in at left-back. However, Bournemouth struggled to create chances and the hosts were still a threat on counterattacks, with Wilfried Zaha having a penalty appeal waved away in the 70th minute after colliding with Chris Mepham. Schlupp then scored the winner after he raced past Jefferson Lerma and Dominic Solanke before dribbling into the area and rifling an effort past Aaron Ramsdale from 12 yards out. Tuesday’s games were the first Premier League matches to be streamed live by Amazon in Britain, after the online giant bought the rights for two full rounds per season for the next three years......»»
