Clarkson gets NBA clearance to play in Asian Games

In another turn, Jordan Clarkson is cleared to play for Gilas Pilipinas in the 2018 Asian Games. According to Chef de Mission Richard Gomez, the NBA has given Clarkson to go signal to play for the national team, which makes its Asiad debut against Kazakhstan on Thursday, August 16. [Related: Clarkson makes Gilas final 12 for Asian Games] However, there's still one hurdle to Clarkson's national team debut and that is the Asian Games itself. Philippine officials will have to talk with the Asian Games organizing committee once again to re-allow Clarkson to play. Now, it's just a matter of getting the Fil-Am combo guard to Jakarta to suit up for the Philippines-Kazakhstan match to start the country's basketball campaign in the Asian Games. This will mark the first time Jordan Clarkson will play for the Philippine national team since he first burst into the scene as a second round pick by the Washington Wizards in the 2014 NBA Draft before being traded to the LA Lakers. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

La Salle finishes fourth in South Korean tournament

While De La Salle University fell short of a podium finish in the 2018 Asia Pacific University Challenge, the experience they earned there will still go a long way as they commence a new era. The Green Archers fell to host Yonsei University, 80-92, last Saturday to wind up their campaign with a 2-3 record. That standing was only good for fourth-place in the invitational. Still, the Taft-based team welcomes the promising showings from the likes of scoring dynamo Aljun Melecio, hardworking forward Santi Santillan, and super rookie Encho Serrano. “Malaking tulong ‘to sa amin cause, first of all, we all know na yung team na ‘to is rebuilding so kailangang mabuo namin yung confidence namin sa isa’t-isa,” Melecio shared. He then continued, “Both on and off the court, yun yung nagawa namin.” In particular, Serrano, playing for the first time in green and white, showed several flashes of why he was once considered the top high school player in the country. “Masarap at masaya na makapaglaro na finally sa La Salle. Sobrang thankful ko rin kasi big experience para sa aking makalaro at makalaban yung mga team sa ibang bansa,” he said. A fully healthy team captain Kib Montalbo, who sat out much of the 2018 Filoil Preseason due to injury, was also a welcome sight. “Man’s greatest victory is to conquer himself. We learned a lot about mental toughness there,” he remarked. Now, La Salle will bring that experience to the looming UAAP Season 81. The Green Archers opened the tournament with back-to-back wins against Japan and Chinese Taipei before falling to UC Irvine, Russia-select, and Yonsei. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

Art Dela Cruz set to make long time coming Ginebra debut

After months of recovery, Art Dela Cruz is projected to finally debut for Barangay Ginebra in the upcoming PBA Governor's Cup. As per Dela Cruz and head coach Tim Cone, they are looking into fielding him starting around October. "Sabi ni Coach [Tim Cone], middle of the conference. My goal is October, second week of October. But my focus right now is rehab nga, and then sabi rin sa akin ni Coach na this time, i-sure mo na 100% ka na. And loaded naman yung team so there's no hurry," said Dela Cruz Sunday afternoon during Ginebra's victory party with fans for their latest championship. "He's due back maybe in October, but we'll see. We'll play it by ear by that time, we're not gonna push him," added Cone. Dela Cruz first ruptured his Achilles tendon during a Gilas Pilipinas practice in March 2017. He was still a player of Blackwater Elite then. When he was shipped to Brgy. Ginebra in a trade that involved Chris Ellis, Raymond Aguilar, and Dave Marcelo in August 2017, he re-injured his tendon before he had his Ginebra debut. It has been 17 months and counting since Dela Cruz last played a game in the PBA. "Medyo matagal na. Talagang maging patient lang ako, iniisip ko din 'yung long-term eh, hindi lang itong conference na ito," he said. In those long months, Dela Cruz focused on his injury's rehabilitation and understanding the sophisticated system of Cone's triangle offense. "Learning na rin yung triangle sa akin. Actually, bago lang ako sa triangle, most of my career is run and gun sa college [San Beda] eh. Ito slow ball kaya maganda rin pag galing ka sa injury, di ka masyadong masusunog," explained the former NCAA star. Interestingly, the versatile forward is also trying out the point guard role. "Actually, nagpa-practice na ako tapos ang position na nilalagay sa akin ni Coach, point guard. Ang laking bagay na noong sa college naumpisahan ko na. Pero ngayon, primary na eh. Primary na na point, kaya point going from power forward," said the 6-foot-4 player. As the Kings still celebrate their latest conquered land now - the Commissioner's Cup, there is no rush for Dela Cruz. After all, Ginebra seems to have long term plans for him in the pipeline. "After a second Achilles surgery, we do not want to rush him back. He's only 25, so he's got a lot of basketball ahead of him. And I keep telling him: it's not about this conference, it's about the next 8-10 years, that's when we want him for. We want him ready for the next 8-10 years," Cone shared. This is not a surprise given Cone's high regard on the do-it-all forward. He considers his game as a marriage of Scottie Thompson's and Joe Devance's. "We were choosing between him [Dela Cruz] and Scottie [Thompson] when he came out of the [2015] draft, and we chose Scottie which was obviously a great pick. But Art was a close second, just because we thought that his skills were very unique, similar to what Scottie does, but in a bigger version," Cone explained. "Art to me is kind of like the in-between Scottie and Joe, kind of right in between those two guys." Dela Cruz has so far posted norms of 12.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.7 steals in the PBA. Aside from Dela Cruz, Cone also targets to line-up new acquisition from Globalport Julian Sargent who is recuperating from a shoulder injury......»»

Domingo leading the way for FEU in PVL

Far Eastern University's post Bernadeth Pons era has started and the team is starting to stand on its feet without its former talisman. In the Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference, the Lady Tamaraws seemed to have found a new first option in middle blocker Celine Domingo. The third-year hitter has been carrying FEU's scoring load in the offseason tournament and she's slowly becoming the team's most potent scorer with outside hitter Toni Rose Basas sidelined with an injury. Domingo put up 18 points in FEU's five-set win over University of Perpetual Help, 25-15, 15-25, 22-25, 25-14, 15-6, and that production put her total at 70 points in the league's scoring table. ...Keep on reading: Domingo leading the way for FEU in PVL.....»»

Houston s Watson healthy and ready for more work this week

By Kristie Rieken, Associated Press HOUSTON (AP) — Deshaun Watson was back in a game this week for the first time since surgery to repair a right knee injury in November, and although he didn't play long, he relished his return. "I just played five snaps, handed the ball off, threw one pass," Watson said. "So, it wasn't too bad. Good to just go out there for a couple plays and then watch everyone else perform." The Houston Texans quarterback is looking to build on his limited action as the team prepares for two practices with the San Francisco 49ers next week before hosting them in their second preseason game on Saturday. Watson's health and development in his second year will be critical as Houston tries to bounce back from a season filled with injuries during which the team went 4-12 for its first losing season since 2013. Though he played in just seven games before tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in practice, Watson gave the Texans optimism that he'll be the answer to their longtime problems at the position. He threw for 1,699 yards and 19 touchdowns and ran for 269 yards and two more scores after Houston traded up to select him with the 12th overall pick in the 2017 draft. Saturday was the team's first practice back in Houston after the Texans spent the first part of training camp in West Virginia. Although they had to adjust to the hotter temperatures at home, Watson and the Texans got a boost from working out in front of several hundred cheering fans. "The climate ... it's hot and muggy but at the end of the day we have to come out here and play football and perform and just focus on our task," he said. "So, it's always good to have the fans around and show love. They give us energy and high hopes for this season." The 22-year-old said he's grown a lot since arriving in Houston last season and is looking forward to building on what he did last year. "Just really (grown) as a person as a whole and then just the knowledge of the game," he said. "Just being able to understand the offense, understand what the defense is doing and just play faster, just go out there and play and not overthink things." Coach Bill O'Brien, who worked with Tom Brady when he was an assistant with the Patriots, has enjoyed watching Watson develop and is looking for ways to help him take another step. "I think there's areas where he and I need to grow together, like in the red area," he said. "We're a little bit behind there but we have to work together on that and see if we can execute better down there, but I think there's a lot of areas where he's gotten better and better, and he'll only get better and better because he works at it and the experience he gets will really help him." Watson is working behind a revamped offensive line this year after last year's group allowed the second-most sacks in the league. So far, he likes the way the unit is coming together. "Guys just building chemistry, working hard each and every day, never complaining," Watson said. "They make mistakes, but at the end of the day they correct those mistakes and don't make it twice, just like everyone else on the offense. Just guys that love to play football. They have a passion about going in ... and putting in the work, and (are) passionate about winning.".....»»

Cesca Racraquin brings San Beda to first win

The Cesca Racraquin-led San Beda University finally made it to the win column of the PVL Collegiate Conference at the expense of the hapless San Sebastian Lady Stags, 25-24, 21-25, 25-20, 25-16, Saturday afternoon at the Filoil Flying V Centre. In a battle of two winless teams, San Beda came out as the winners thanks to the return of their leader, Racraquin. It was Racraquin’s first game after recovering from a mild left knee and ankle injury last week. "Sobrang importante itong [game na ito] sa akin. Kasi for the past games namin na talo kami, I can see na wala silang leader sa loob and parang nasasaktan ako kasi ako yung leader nila tapos wala ako dun," she said. The San Beda ace tallied a total of 18 points, nine from attacks and another nine aces. "Ang focus ko ay mag lead sa team namin para maging isa kami and yun naman, nakatulong naman siya dun sa panalo namin today." Nieza Viray added 15 points while Satrriani Espiritu chipped in 13 for San Beda. Joyce Sta. Rita and Sofia Sarmiento paced the Lady Stags with 13 and 10 points respectively. Eya Laure nurses recurring shoulder injury

After University of Santo Tomas rookie Eya Laure's feisty 18-point performance last week against UP Lady Maroons, her game was toned down a bit Saturday evening when they faced the College of Saint Benilde. Laure seemed bothered by a pain she felt on her right shoulder. She constantly rubbed her shoulder all throughout the game and her attacks, especially in the third set,  were not in full power. In the post-game after the Golden Tigresses won in straight sets, assistant coach Ian Fernandez bared that Laure is nursing a recurring shoulder injury. But don't get them wrong, despite an injury that was already existing in her high school days, Laure still sizzled with 11 points including two service aces Saturday afternoon. "Nagpa MRI na ako kasi before UP game may di na talagang maganda na nangyari. Nag pain reliever lang ako para wala akong maramdaman talaga. Pero opo [nilaban na lang kanina]," Laure said. She also expressed that during trainings, she rarely engages her right shoulder with spiking and blocking drills to let it fully recover. She focuses on defensive drills instead. As early as today, rookie Laure is already seen as the girl who will raise UST's banner in the UAAP alongside Sisi Rondina. Now with an injury of hers exposed, she still assures the UST faithful that this is nothing too big to worry about. "Di naman nila dapat ika-worry kasi mag thetherapy naman ako at andyan naman yung PT namin ngayon, aalagaan niya naman daw ako sabi niya. Papacheck din ako sa doctors. Nakaka-recover naman. "Di ko naman siya [right shoulder] ipupush through sa ibang liga kasi syempre UAAP naman talaga ang sobrang pinaghahandaan namin.".....»»

UST s Ysa Jimenez heeds co-rookie Eya Laure s call

With Eya Laure nursing a shoulder injury, another University of Santo Tomas rookie stepped up for the Tigresses and her name is Ysabel Jimenez. The 18-year-old open spiker powered 13 points in a 46-percent attacking percentage as they faced the College of Saint Benilde, Saturday evening. "Parang [nag-sabi] rin si [Eya] sa akin na 'Ysa ikaw yung kailangan namin ngayon, tulungan mo ko.' Ako naman syempre, 'Oo tutulungan kita, yung team.' Gagawin ko lahat ng makakaya ko, andyan din naman sila ate para tulungan kami at sila coach kasi bigla nga siyang nagka-injury," explained the Univeristy of the East high school alumna. Jimenez heeded the call and came through to book their semi-finals ticket. They also rolled to a perfect 5-0 slate. "Sa amin kasi, itong game na to, walang pressure kasi lagi kaming nireremind ni coach na maging masaaya lang kami sa ginagawa namin and magtiwala sa kung anong kaya naming gawin and makinig lang sa kanila, sa mga instructions nila." Jimenez shared also that donning the UST jersey has always been a dream for her. Now that she is a Golden Tigress, she can't help but beam with pride. "Dream school ko po talaga tong UST. Andito yung mga taong nagpapasaya talaga sa akin. Masaya sa UST, sobrang saya. Hindi ako nagsisi na lumipat ako dito. Gusto ko kasi sila Coach Kung Fu. Ang galing nila mag coach, as in," she said with a big smile. Now with a very impressive spotless record and with a good mix of veterans and rookies bannering the team, Jimenez expressed that UST has lofty goals to achieve this PVL conference. "Gusto ko manalo kami, magchampion kami dito kasi syempre yung line up namin dito puro rookies kami so gusto ko kahit rookie pa lang kami, may mapuntahan agad kami." First it was Laure, now it is Jimenez. This just goes to show that UST has a very promising rookie class for UAAP Season 81.  .....»»
