Russian boxer, 28, dies after suffering brain injury in ring

By James Ellingworth, Associated Press MOSCOW (AP) — Boxer Maxim Dadashev died Tuesday, two days after suffering a brain injury in a fight in Maryland. He was 28. The Russian Boxing Federation said Dadashev suffered a brain swelling in Friday's light-welterweight fight with Subriel Matias at the Theater at MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland. He underwent surgery but his heart stopped Tuesday, the federation said. Dadashev was hospitalized at UM Prince George's Hospital Center shortly after the fight, which was stopped by his corner following the 11th round after Dadashev took numerous shots to the head. Footage from the fight shows Dadashev shaking his head in his corner as his trainer, Buddy McGirt, pleads with him to stop the fight, telling him: "You're getting hit too much, Max. Please, Max, please let me do this." Shortly after, the referee stopped the bout at McGirt's request. The Russian Boxing Federation's secretary general, Umar Kremlev, said the federation would investigate whether anyone was at fault for Dadashev's death. "We need to know the truth about what happened," Kremlev wrote in an email to The Associated Press. "I believe that some human factors intervened, that there was some kind of violation." He added the federation would give Dadashev's family financial support. Both fighters were 13-0 before the bout, which offered the winner the right to challenge IBF titleholder Josh Taylor. Dadashev had been viewed as a rising star after beating two former world lightweight champions, Darleys Perez and Antonio DeMarco, last year. Before Friday's fight, he had won 11 of his 13 fights by way of knockout. In a statement, promotor Top Bank called Dadashev "a talented fighter inside the ring and a loving husband and father outside the ropes." He was originally from the Russian city of St. Petersburg but had fought exclusively in the United States since turning pro in 2016. "He was a very kind person who fought until the very end," Dadashev's wife, Elizaveta Apushkina, said in a statement issued by the hospital. "Our son will continue (to) be raised to be a great man like his father. Lastly, I would like to thank everyone that cared for Maxim during his final days." The Russian embassy in the U.S. said in a statement on Facebook it is "ready to provide any necessary assistance for (Dadashev's) repatriation to Russia.".....»»

TERRIFIC 12: San Miguel Beer takes on champion Golden Kings in Macau

Asia League has rebranded to the East Asia Super League (EASL) but it’s still set to hold its crowd favorite tournament coming in the next couple of months. The Terrific 12 will return to Macau on September 17-22 and this time, there’s finally a strong Filipino presence for the week-long joust at the Tap Seac Multi-sports Pavilion. The PBA will send two flagship teams in the San Miguel Beermen and TNT KaTropa. The Blackwater Elite will also make an East Asia Super League return after competing in the Super 8 last year. After dominating the PBA for the second half of this decade, capturing a fifth straight Philippine Cup title early this year, the Beermen are trying to conquer new territory. However, San Miguel should be in for a tough challenge as the Beermen are in Group B in Macau. Also in Group B is Japan’s Ryukyu Golden Kings, the team that swept the tournament last year to win the Terrific 12 title. Full lineups are yet to be released but the Golden Kings brought a pretty imposing team to Macau last year. It wouldn’t be too surprising for Ryukyu to return strong and defend its Terrific 12 title. June Mar Fajardo and the rest of that star-studded San Miguel frontline will surely be challenged. In the last B.League season, the Golden Kings won 40 regular season games and made the semifinals, losing to eventual back-to-back champion Alvark Tokyo. Finally, Ryukyu coach Norio Sassa has been salivating at the chance to go up against PBA teams since last year. His Golden Kings draw the Philippines’ top team in group play this year. [Related: TERRIFIC 12: Ryukyu's champion coach eager to face PBA teams] Also in Group B to challenge the Beermen are the Shenzen Aviators from China. Shenzen won 33 regular season games in the CBA and was a top-4 seed entering the playoffs. They likewise lost to eventual champion Guangdong in the semifinals. The Beermen the Terrific 12 against Shenzen on Tuesday, September 17, followed by a mega showdown against Ryukyu two days later. The Terrific 12 is a FIBA-recognized basketball tournament and features three clubs from the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA), four from the B.LEAGUE (Japan), two from the Korean Basketball League (KBL) and three from the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). A Group Stage, Semi-Finals and Finals will play out 16 epic games in total to crown this year’s champion.  In the Group Stage, clubs will be divided into four groups of three, with each team playing two games. The top team from each group will advance to compete in the Semi-Finals following a rest day on September 20. The champion will be awarded USD 150,000, the runner- up will be awarded USD 100,000 and third place will be awarded USD 50,000.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

Guadana announces arrival as no. 1 player in first NBTC 24 in NCAA 95

Lyceum came to the season with heightened expectations - and there's really no other man who will be at the center of the fight than Mac Guadana. To nobody's surprise, the 18-year-old playmaker was the driving force for the Junior Pirates' early ascent to the top of the standings, going unbeaten through their three games this NCAA Season 95. And thus, Guadana was hailed as the top player in the inaugural Phenom/NBTC NCAA 24 high school basketball rankings. Guadana averaged 17.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 3.0 assists in Lyceum's first two victories of the season as it drubbed Letran and then EAC. He willingly took a step back with John Barba back in the fold as the Junior Pirates clipped defending champion Mapua to rise to a 3-0 slate. Gilas Youth member Rhayyan Amsali of San Beda snared second place as he was made an immediate impact for the Red Cubs despite missing their season opener. Lyceum's Jae Omandac is at third, followed by Perpetual's Emman Galman, and Barba completed the troika of Jr. Pirates in the top five. Rounding out the top 10 are JRU's Gholam Garcia, Letran's Joshua Ramirez, JRU's Condrad Famaranco, San Beda's Justine Sanchez, and LSGH's Juan Quiambao. Here are the complete list for the first rankings of the Phenom/NBTC NCAA 24: 1. Mac Guadana (LPU) 2. Rhayyan Amsali (SBU) 3. Jae Omandac (LPU) 4. Emman Galman (UPHSD) 5. John Barba (LPU) 6. Gholam Garcia (JRU) 7. Joshua Ramirez (CSJL) 8. Condrad Famaranco (JRU) 9. Justine Sanchez (SBU) 10. Jiam Quiambao (LSGH) 11. Edzel Galoy (UPHSD) 12. Yukien Andrada (SBU) 13. Chris Recto (AU) 22. Shawn Argente (CSJL) 23. JR Ilustrisimo (EAC-ICA) 24. Dan Parinas (MU) This year, there will be four separate editions of the NBTC 24 - one for the NCAA, one for the UAAP, one for the CESAFI, and one for all the other venues where the most promising prospects in the country also get to showcase their skills. After all four editions have been completed, a final list composing the top 24 players nationwide will then be chosen to participate in the annual NBTC All-Star Game in March......»»

LOOK: Meeting Manny Pacquiao puts a smile on Fun Guy Kawhi Leonard s face

As we have seen throughout his career, Kawhi Leonard is one of the most enigmatic personalities in the NBA today.  The self-proclaimed 'Fun Guy' isn't too big on talking, or even emotions for that matter.  The usually-stoic swing man usually just gets on the court, gets things done, and then leaves. That's pretty much what he did last season.  After being traded to the Toronto Raptors, Leonard got the job done by helping The North to their first ever-NBA championship, and then left in the postseason to go home and play for the Los Angeles Clippers.  Winning a championship, the second of his career, as well as winning his second Finals MVP plum was enough to put a smile on Kawhi's face, and let's face it, there isn't much that can 'The Klaw" to flash his pearly-whites.  One other thing that apparently can get Kawhi to smile is meeting boxing icon Manny Pacquiao.  The NBA star was in attendance at the Pacquiao-Keith Thurman welterweight title bout in Las Vegas over the weekend, and while he seemed to less than psyched while watching the action, he did seem to be quite happy to see the "Pacman" backstage, and a photo is circulating social media.  I wonder if Kawhi flashed this smile at any time during the fight ???? Mr. Fun Guy and Mr. Pacman (Not my photo - floating around Twitterverse) pic.twitter.com/gCq2E5qf0V — TJ Manotoc (@tjmanotoc) July 22, 2019 To be fair, getting a photo opportunity with a living legend like Manny Pacquiao, especially after he turned in yet another masterful performance, will make anyone grin.  The 40-year old Pacquiao defeated Thurman by split decision to become the new WBA (Super) Welterweight World Champion.  Congratulations to Manny Pacquiao, and congratulations to Fun Guy Kawhi for the title, the new team, and the big payday! .....»»
