San Beda takes LPU’s best shot, still takes seventh straight win in NCAA 95

San Beda University continued to have all the answers for modern-day rival Lyceum of the Philippines University for a convincing 88-73 victory in the two team’s first meeting in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, Tuesday at Filoil Flying V Centre. The now-vacated places of Robert Bolick and Javee Mocon were simply filled by Evan Nelle and James Canlas as the Red Lions remained unscathed through seven games in their title defense. Well aware of all LPU had up its sleeve, San Beda was in complete command for majority of the matchup. "Unang-una, nagpapasalamat ako sa players ko for all the sacrifices they have had the past few days preparing for LPU," a more than satisfied head coach Boyet Fernandez said post-game. Of course, the Pirates kept coming and were within six, 64-70, inside the last seven minutes. In the next four minutes, however, Nelle sparked a 14-0 charge that re-increased the Red Lion edge to 84-64. The red and white would not be threatened the rest of the way as they re-asserted their mastery over the LPU crew they had downed in the Finals of the last two years. Nelle wound up with 14 points, all but five coming in the final frame, to go along with seven rebounds and four assists while "Bandana Bro" Canlas also added nine markers, four boards, and three dimes. Topping the scoring column for the defending champions was Calvin Oftana who posted a 20-point, 12-rebound double-double while Cameroonian bruiser Donald Tankoua had 19 markers and six boards of his own. Even after taking down another playoff hopeful, however, San Beda is well aware is has a long way to go. "Hopefully, we won't stop here. it's only one game and we have so many to go," coach Boyet said. On the other hand, the Pirates were sank for just the second time in eight games. Mike Nzeusseu, their powerhouse from Cameroon, paced them with 18 points and nine rebounds and he was backstopped by Jaycee Marcelino who had 13 markers, five assists, three steals, and two boards. San Beda drops 46-point hammer on Perps for sixth straight win in NCAA 95

San Beda University counted five players in double-digits in a 46-point demolition of University of Perpetual Help, 102-56, Friday at Filoil Flying V Centre. AC Soberano finished what Donald Tankoua started as both players wound up with 15 points in the Red Lions’ sixth straight win in their title defense in the NCAA 95 Men’s Basketball Tournament. "Credit to my boys for the win. They wanted to prove something," head coach Boyet Fernandez said. The defending champions started strong, shooting the lights out for 30 points in the opening salvo. Tankoua took charge from that timeframe, pounding in eight of his output while Clint Doliguez and Evan Nelle also added five markers apiece. In all, the San Beda starters took the fight out of all of their opponents by a score of 30-17 after the first quarter. The Altas would not be able to make a game out of it as Soberano caught fire in the final frame, scoring all of his output and by his lonesome, nearly matching their opponents in scoring. "AC made the most of his threes in the fourth. Hopefully, tuloy-tuloy na rin yung kumpyansa niya," coach Boyet said. The Red Lions' lead went as high as 52, 102-50, inside the last three minutes. They would not be able to get a make the rest of the way, but still wound up with the biggest margin of victory thus far in the tournament. For Perps, Edgar Charcos and Tonton Peralta each scored 13 points. With their defense missing in action all throughout, though, they absorbed their fourth loss in the last five games and now stand at 2-5. San Beda silences EAC in Season 95 s first NCAA On Tour

NCAA 95 Men's Basketball Tournament defending champion San Beda University had to overcome a slow start before getting the better of upstart Emilio Aguinaldo College, 89-72, Thursday inside the latter's Sports and Cultural Center in Manila. The Red Lions just could not get going early on and found themselves in a 2-12 hole. "Credit to EAC, they really prepared well today and started strong," head coach Boyet Fernandez said. Off a timeout, however, the three-time reigning kings finally woke up and went on a 22-4 tear to take a 24-16 lead at the end of the first quarter. They would not look back from there as the first five of James Canlas, Evan Nelle, Calvin Oftana, Donald Tankoua, and Clint Doliguez just proved to be too much for the Generals who had the backing of their home crowd. All of the red and white's starters were in double-digits led by Canlas who turned in a season-best 21 points on top of five rebounds and three assists while Nelle turned in a career-high 15 markers to go along with seven dimes and four boards. Tankoua then posted a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double while Oftana and Doliguez also added 14 and 10 markers, respectively. In all, that first five overwhelmed their counterparts and had more than two-thirds of San Beda's output. That, in coach Boyet's eyes, should be a challenge to his bench. As he put it, "Medyo malaki ang discrepancy dun. We need to work on that." For EAC, Marwin Taywan topped the scoring column with 20 points while Kriss Gurtiza contributed 15 markers, eight rebounds, and three assists. Unable to build on its upset win against title contender Lyceum of the Philippines University, however, they dropped to 1-2 in the standings. NCAA 95: Playmaking Nelle puts on a show in San Beda s back-to-back wins

Evan Nelle set it all up, Calvin Oftana and James Canlas served up the goods, and San Beda University stamped its class on Jose Rizal University, 74-52, Friday at Filoil Flying V Centre for back-to-back wins to begin the NCAA 95 Men's Basketball Tournament. Nelle only had five points, but threatened to top Jiovani Jalalon's record for assists in a game and totaled 14 at the end of it all. "We thought na yung 11 assists niya (at halftime), magiging record-breaking na, but we missed shots nung second half," head coach Boyet Fernandez said. Just at halftime, the second-year point guard already had 11 dimes, most of which went to "Bandana Bro" Canlas as well as Oftana. Those three was at the head of the spear as the Red Lions busted out a 15-0 run to open the matchup. In the end, Canlas had 17 points and eight rebounds while Oftana had 17 markers and 10 boards. Nelle also added three steals to his name as JB Bahio chimed in 11 points. The long-limbed playmaker just fell short of the 16 assists in a game once recorded by Jalalon when he was still playing for Arellano University back in 2015, but more importantly, thought that he should have done more in terms of scoring. "Bad game for me e. Honestly, hindi ako maka-shoot so nag-create na lang ako para sa teammates ko kasi sila, nakaka-shoot," he said. The Heavy Bombers got energized quite a bit by high school recruits Marwin Dionisio and John Amores. Still, that proved far from enough from preventing their second straight setback to start the season.
