PVL: Motolite grabs first win

Motolite rediscovered its competitive form that was missing in its debut as the squad barged in the win column with a 25-22, 25-19, 25-19, drubbing of debuting Chef’s Classics on Saturday in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Open Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan. Passing the ball better than in its straight sets loss to defending champion Creamline last Wednesday, setter Iris Tolenada steered Motolite on the right direction for a 1-1 win-loss record. Myla Pablo paced Motolite with game-high 20 points with 17 coming off attacks. Tots Carlos added nine markers while Tolenada tallied 15 of Motolite’s 25 excellent sets to erase the squad’s embarrassing total of four dishes the last time out. Although Motolite played better than in its opener, head coach Godfrey Okumu still saw flaws that they need to address. “Today’s game that was not good. We won, yes, but we are still slow on some things. The speed of the ball, the movement, we are still working on that. We’ve been training hard yesterday and I think that’s the only way,” he said. “We won, congratulations to my team, our opponents played well and they gave us something we can think about but we still need to work hard,” Okumu added. Motolite had shaky start as the Red Spikers kept the game close. Motolite mounted an 8-1 scoring blitz to turn a 9-12 deficit to a 17-13 lead and never looked back. Pablo sparked Motolite’s early separation in the third set to wrap up the match. Nieza Viray was the only Chef’s Classics player in double figures with 10 points. Skipper Justine Tiu and Cecilia Bangad combined for 14 markers in a lost cause for the Red Spikers, who played the first of their back-to-back weekend games. Chef’s Classics will take on Creamline on Sunday.  .....»»
