Thunderz All-Stars outpoise UST in PBL action

Coming off a rousing opening day win over Philippine Air Force last weekend, the veteran-laden Thunderz All-Stars needed a clutch performance from Justin Zialcita for a come-from-behind win over the UST Golden Sox, 7-6, last Saturday at Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium in Manila. "Coming from a win against Air Force, medyo nag-relax yung team," lamented shortstop Aids Bernardo. "Good thing na as the game went on, dun lumabas yung pagiging beterano namin. Tulong-tulong talaga." Behind Raymond Vargas' slugging, the All-Stars were down 4-5 heading into the sixth inning. That's when Zialcita came alive, blasting a clutch three-run double to put Thunderz ahead for good. Bernardo, who pitched the 2 2/3 innings of the game, closed out the game with six strikeouts, sealing his second win in the 2019 Philippine Baseball League Open Conference. With the win, Thunderz rose to the top of Group B with a 2-0 record in this tournament sanctioned by the Philippine Amateur Baseball Association and backed by the Philippine Sports Commission. Joining them at Group B's pole position are the RTU-Alums Thunder, who defeated the debuting UP Fighting Maroons earlier in the day, 5-2. Jay Pacudan steered the older generation of RTU batters by allowing just two hits when he was on the mound while going 3-of-4 at-bat on the other end. In the last game of the day, the NU Bulldogs evened their slate to 1-1 in Group A after blasting the RTU Thunder, 9-5. The current RTU squad fell to 0-2......»»

PBA: Nothing to worry about Terrence after ejection says Castro

TNT has some odd history with imports in a sense that the KaTropa always seem to get uber-talented reinforcements. Uber-talented but a hothead. Ivan Johnson and Glen Rice Jr. come to mind. TNT has another uber-talented import for the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup in Terrence Jones but the former Houston Rocket didn’t even get to finish his second PBA game Saturday. Jones had a minor incident with Alaska’s Jake Pascual late, and was ejected with about two minutes to go in a sure TNT win. He finished with 43 points and 22 rebounds. The KaTropa simply brush off the incident, saying Jones is good. “Obvious naman na wala talaga siya ginawa. Sobrang napaka-humble na tao and napaka-good guy,” TNT leader Jayson Castro said of Jones. “Nagha-hi sa lahat, nangangamusta. Even yung import ng kabila sinasabi na you have a great import. Di lang as in sa basketball, pati sa outside makikita mo talaga,” he added. Jones is averaging 42 points per game so far and TNT is at 2-0 after back-to-back double-digit wins. The trend in the PBA now is to get resident imports and Jones could be that guy for the KaTropa. It could be a possibility unless Jones makes his way back to the NBA. He’s that good and that young still. “Pero syempre, sa age niya at sa nilalaro niya, makikita mo parin na pang NBA parin siya,” Castro said. “At alam namin gusto niyang makabalik doon, at tutulungan namin siyang makabalik doon,” he added.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

UAAP: Coach Franz says Adamson now a destination for blue-chip recruits

Adamson University, new-look and all, is doing pretty well in the ongoing 2019 Filoil Flying V Preseason Tournament. Following the lead of Jerrick Ahanmisi and fanning the flames of the development of Simon Camacho and Jerom Lastimosa, the Soaring Falcons are now one of the league leaders in the preseason tournament. Of course, it's not only those three doing the heavy lifting as rookies Aaron Fermin and Joem Sabandal and first-year foreign reinforcement Lenda Douanga have also delivered much-welcome contributions. "I think we got very good recruits," head coach Franz Pumaren said after they improved to 3-1. "But basically, they still need to work on their individual skills." Aside from Fermin, a double-double machine from his time in Arellano High School, and Sabandal, a steadying force for Adamson HS, also now in San Marcelino are Lorenz Capulong, AP Manlapaz, Joshua Yerro, and Doria twins Adam and Andrey. That has given the blue and white one of the best recruiting classes in 2019. That big-time offseason haul proved coach Franz correct when he said that Adamson could now recruit with the best of the best. "Since I took over, I think we picked up a lot of respectability. We already established that Adamson can be a powerhouse in basketball," he said at the end of their campaign in UAAP 81 last November. He then continued, "Right now, we are a destination for high school kids who want to be developed." Without a doubt, getting the better of other suitors for the likes of blue-chip recruits Fermin, Sabandal, and Yerro is nothing but a welcome development for the Soaring Falcons - upstarts in terms of recruitment compared to the likes of Ateneo de Manila University, De La Salle University, or San Beda University. And the reason for that is pretty simple - in the eyes of their mentor. As he put it, "We thrive on developing and bringing out the best in players. That's why I know that this is now a destination for aspiring players." He then continued, "If you want to be noticed, to be put on the map, of course, the right place to go is with us." --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

PBA: Yeng irate over “stupid” foul that cost NLEX a win

In a close game Saturday against Northport, one particular call got NLEX head coach Yeng Guiao irate. With the Road Warriors trailing by one in the final minute, Kyles Lao was called for a pushing foul on Nico Elorde. Elorde was going out of bounds and tried to call timeout. No timeout was awarded but instead, Lao was called for the push when he rushed in and tried to trap Elorde near the sideline. Guiao argued the call and was given a technical in the process. And while Elorde ended up missing two of the three free throws awarded to him, NLEX ended up still losing by four, dropping to 0-2 for the 2019 Commissioner’s Cup. “I'm not surprised that people are complaining about the officiating. My problem with that call is si [technical director] Eric Castro justified [it]. I think that's stupidity. That is a stupid way to justify that call. They justified it by saying there was contact. The problem is not all contacts are foul. To me, that is a stupid way to justify that,” Guiao said. “Sobrang nipis. And previous to that action, kung gusto nilang tumawag ng foul, we just watched the tape, Sean Anthony was climbing all over the back of Kenneth Ighalo. They did not call that but they called an itsy bitsy physical contact. To me, that's not justifiable,” he added. With such a close game and the timing of the call, coach Yeng says that the foul should have been let go. It pretty much cost NLEX the win he said. “We got a really ugly break. I don't think the foul on Kyles Lao was something that you should call in a situation like that,” Guiao said. “That's a really bad call and it cost us the game,” he added. Still, coach Yeng was satisfied with his team’s effort in the loss. NLEX went All-Filipino against Northport as import Tony Mitchell’s documents didn’t arrive in time to make the game. “I'm actually happy with our effort. We played without an import but we had a chance to win the game in the last one or two possessions,” Guiao said. — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

PBA: Crucial stretch coming up for Northport says Anthony

For the second time this season, Northport has started a conference with a 2-0 mark. Following a win against NLEX Saturday, the Batang Pier are 2-0 in the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup. Of course, they had the same record in the All-Filipino and then went on to lose six straight games. They ended up missing the playoffs. Northport wants to avoid that this time around. “We just gotta figure out how to keep winning as a team,” forward Sean Anthony said. “Games don’t get easier. We got TNT and then all three San Miguel teams. So it’s gonna be a big stretch for us coming up. We gotta buckle down and just keep getting better,” he added. Against NLEX, Northport had to scramble late just to pick up a win. The Road Warriors were without an import and the Batang Pier were still without star guard Stanley Pringle. “It’s a big win anytime you’re missing your best player and your team can pull off wins,” Anthony said.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

PBA: Jones gets 40-20 and TNT rolls past Alaska

There’s no stopping Terrence Jones and TNT in the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup. At least for now. Jones was dominant once again, leading the KaTropa to a big 99-85 win over Alaska Saturday at the Big Dome. After firing 41 points in his PBA debut, Jones was good for 43 points this time and TNT won a second game in as many outings. He also had 22 rebounds before getting ejected with two minutes left for two technical fouls in the game. “Our main short-term goal is to win as much as possible, especially in the early part of the conference,” said head coach Bong Ravena. “Kailangan main laging maka-panalo, hahanapin kasi namin mga talo namin sa una [late in the conference],” he added. TNT got the job done against the Aces to be on top of the standings this early. The KaTropa pulled away in the fourth, leading by as many as 19 after being only up two at the break. Jones was largely responsible for that, scoring 14 in the second quarter and another 21 in the second half to anchor the TNT offense. Jayson Castro was the top local for the KaTropa, adding 14 points, three asssists, three steals, and two blocks. Alaska got 23 from import Chris Daniels and 22 from Jvee Casio but the Aces have now lost back-to-back games for a 1-2 record. — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»
