Antonio Brown faces rape accusations by former trainer

By Jay Cohen, Associated Press New England Patriots wide receiver Antonio Brown has been accused of rape by a former trainer. Britney Taylor says Brown sexually assaulted her on three occasions, according to a lawsuit filed Tuesday in the Southern District of Florida. Brown has denied the allegations. Darren Heitner, a lawyer representing Brown, told The Associated Press his client plans to countersue. "He will pursue all legal remedies to not only clear his name, but to also protect other professional athletes against false accusations," Heitner said in a statement. Heitner said Brown and Taylor had "a consensual personal relationship." The New York Times first reported about the lawsuit. The AP does not ordinarily name the alleged victims of sex assaults, but Taylor was identified in the federal lawsuit and was quoted in a statement provided by her lawyer, David Haas. "As a rape victim of Antonio Brown, deciding to speak out has been an incredibly difficult decision," Taylor said. "I have found strength in my faith, my family, and from the accounts of other survivors of sexual assault. Speaking out removes the shame that I have felt for the past year and places it on the person responsible for my rape." Taylor also said in the statement she will cooperate with the NFL and any other agencies. A spokesman for the NFL declined comment, but the Patriots said the league told the team it will launch an investigation. "We are aware of the civil lawsuit that was filed earlier today against Antonio Brown, as well as the response by Antonio's representatives," the Patriots said in a statement. "We take these allegations very seriously. Under no circumstance does this organization condone sexual violence or assault. The league has informed us that they will be investigating. We will have no further comment while that investigation takes place." The 31-year-old Brown, a Miami native, was released by Oakland last week after clashing with the team throughout training camp. He agreed to a contract with New England on Saturday, but has yet to play for the Patriots. Brown and Taylor met through a Fellowship of Christian Athletes group at Central Michigan University, according to the suit. Taylor said Brown reached out to her via Facebook in June 2017 and asked the former gymnast for help with improving his strength and flexibility. According to the lawsuit, Taylor was sexually assaulted by Brown on separate training trips to Pittsburgh and Florida that same month. The suit includes what it says are text messages from Brown bragging about the second assault. Taylor says in the suit she then cut off ties with Brown. But she agreed to work with him again after she says he apologized and agreed to provide hotel accommodations for each training trip. According to the lawsuit, Taylor and Brown were in Miami in May 2018 when he raped her in a bedroom at his home. Taylor says she shouted "no" and "stop," but Brown refused. Heitner said in his statement Taylor invited herself to join Brown and his friends on a night out on the town, and then came on to Brown before they engaged in consensual sex at his residence. Brown was approached by Taylor in 2017, according to Heitner, about making a $1.6 million investment in a business project. But he declined. Heitner said Taylor reached out to Brown again last year, and she traveled to his residences on multiple occasions. Heitner said she asked for tickets to a Pittsburgh Steelers game. "Mr. Brown, whose hard work and dedication to his craft has allowed him to rise to the top of his profession, refuses to be the victim of what he believes to be a money grab," Heitner said in his statement. Brown was originally traded from Pittsburgh to Oakland in the offseason. But a bizarre foot injury, fight with the NFL over his helmet, skipped practices, multiple fines, a run-in with general manager Mike Mayock and his social media posts ultimately led to the decision to release him. Brown agreed to a deal with the defending Super Bowl champions hours after the Raiders let him go, granting his request. ___ AP Sports Writers Bob Lentz and Kyle Hightower contributed to this report......»»

US Open champ Andreescu is WTA s No. 5; Medvedev 4th in ATP

By Howard Fendrich, Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — A year ago at this time, Bianca Andreescu was ranked outside the WTA's top 200 after losing in the first round of U.S. Open qualifying. Look at her now. Thanks to winning her first Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows, Andreescu jumped 10 spots to a career-high No. 5 in the rankings on Monday, while Ash Barty again replaced Naomi Osaka at No. 1. Andreescu's 6-3, 7-5 victory over Serena Williams in the final on Saturday continued the 19-year-old Canadian's rapid rise from 178th at the end of last season. She is the first woman in the Open era, which began in 1968, to win the U.S. Open in her main-draw debut at the tournament. This was only her fourth career appearance at any Slam. "I don't think I was ever as composed as I am now, or even a year ago. I would get really down on myself and I would get very negative thoughts going through my mind. I would smash rackets. I'd just yell at myself during matches. Actually not even during matches, even during practice, too," Andreescu said. "But I found that that way wasn't working to my advantage at all. So I started ... seeking some advice from other people," she said. "Ever since then, I've been trying to have a very positive outlook on everything. I think that's really been helping me, even in tough situations." Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam champion, slid from No. 8 to No. 9 after losing in the U.S. Open final for the second consecutive year — and finishing as the runner-up for the fourth time in the past six majors. Osaka, the 2018 champion in New York, and Barty both lost in the fourth round. That allowed Barty to move up from No. 2, and Osaka dropped to No. 4. Barty already briefly was No. 1 after winning the French Open in June for her first major championship. Karolina Pliskova is No. 2, and Elina Svitolina is No. 3. Three Americans made big moves in Monday's rankings: 15-year-old Coco Gauff went up 34 places to 106th after reaching the third round before losing to Osaka, Kristie Ahn moved up 48 to 93rd and Taylor Townsend rose 33 to 83rd. U.S. Open men's champion Rafael Nadal stayed at No. 2 in the ATP rankings and closed the gap between him and No. 1 Novak Djokovic, the defending champion who exited in the fourth round. Runner-up Daniil Medvedev is up to a personal-best No. 4 from No. 5 after reaching his first Grand Slam final, where he erased a big early deficit and pushed Nadal to five sets before losing to the Spaniard 7-5, 6-3, 5-7, 4-6, 6-4 in a match Sunday that lasted nearly five hours. Nadal collected his fourth trophy in New York and his 19th Grand Slam title in all, moving within one of Roger Federer's record for men. Federer remained at No. 3 in Monday's rankings after losing in the quarterfinals while bothered by a bad back. The man who beat him in five sets before losing to Medvedev in the semifinals, Grigor Dimitrov, went from No. 78 to No. 25. The other man who lost in the semifinals, 23-year-old Matteo Berrettini, rose 12 spots to a career-best 13th......»»

Serbia s World Cup bid off to a flying start

By Tim Reynolds, Associated Press SHANGHAI (AP) — Serbia's push toward unseating the United States as World Cup champion is off and running. Bogdan Bogdanovic made his first four 3-point attempts to help his team take control early on, All-NBA center Nikola Jokic didn't even start and the Serbians still had plenty on the way to easing past Angola 105-59 on Saturday in the first game of the World Cup. "We played a great game from the beginning until the end," Serbia forward Nikola Milutinov said. "We were tough. We were strong. Mentally we were ready." Bogdanovic scored 24 points on 8 for 10 shooting for Serbia (1-0 in Group D), which lost gold-medal games to the U.S. at the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. The lead was 50-32 at the half, and Serbia — which has made clear that it came to this World Cup believing it can win gold — opened the third quarter on a 15-2 burst to turn the game into a runaway. "It's a good start," Serbia coach Sasha Djordjevic said. "But it's just the start. It's a long way. We know how to get to where we want to be. We just have to stay humble, stay focused." Jokic and Milutinov each had 14 for the winners, and Boban Marjanovic added 12 points and 10 rebounds. Jokic was 3 for 3 from 3-point range, and Serbia went 13 for 20 from long range. Carlos Morais scored 15 for Angola, which was outrebounded 41-19 and shot only 36 percent. Leonel Paulo scored 10 for Angola; take the combined 10 for 18 shooting by Morais and Paulo away, and the rest of the Angolan lineup shot a mere 11 for 41 — 27%. "We didn't play the style of play consistently enough to have a chance to compete with them," said Angola coach Will Voigt, a native of Cabot, Vermont. Angola center Yanick Moreira was less diplomatic. "We got our (butt) kicked. That's it," Moreira said. "I'm sorry about my language, but I don't want to embarrass my country. When you come to the World Cup, you've got to be ready to play." Serbia used 11 of its 12 players by the end of the first quarter. The only Serbian who didn't play was Nemanja Bjelica, sidelined with what Djordjevic said was knee inflammation caused by a cyst. Bjelica will be re-evaluated on Sunday. PUERTO RICO 83, IRAN 81 At Guangzhou, David Huertas scored 32 points, Javier Mojica's bank shot with 0.7 seconds left was the game-winner and Puerto Rico prevailed despite being down by 17 with 7:55 remaining. Gary Browne scored 12 for Puerto Rico in the Group C opener for both teams. Hamed Haddadi and Behnam Yakhchalidehkordi each scored 22 for Iran. Huertas tied the game with a 3-pointer with 45 seconds left, then made another 3 with 16.1 ticks remaining for a 3-point lead. Haddadi made a deep 3-pointer from the right wing with 4.4 seconds left, but Mojica took an inbounds pass on the ensuing Puerto Rico possession and connected from the left side of the lane for the deciding points. POLAND 80, VENEZUELA 69 At Beijing, Poland got its first World Cup win in 52 years. Michal Sokolowski scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds, and Poland — back in the World Cup for the first time since 1967 — topped Venezuela in a Group A opener for both teams. Mateusz Ponitka scored 15 for the winners, and Poland finished with five players in double figures. "We played to our identity, really good team basketball," Poland coach Mike Taylor said. Pedro Chourio scored 15 for Venezuela. RUSSIA 82, NIGERIA 77 At Wuhan, Russia rallied in the final minutes to hold off upset-minded Nigeria and get what may be a key win in Group B. Mikhail Kulagin led the Russians with 16 points. Nigeria had six players in double figures, led by 18 from Josh Okogie. His 3-pointer midway through the fourth quarter put Nigeria up 71-63, but the Russians ended the game on a 19-6 run......»»

Coroner: Angels Tyler Skaggs died of accidental overdose

By Schuyler Dixon, Associated Press ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Los Angeles Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs died of an accidental overdose from a toxic mix of the powerful painkillers fentanyl and oxycodone along with alcohol, a Texas medical examiner said in a report released Friday. Skaggs' family issued a statement suggesting a team employee was part of the investigation into the death. "That is completely out of character for someone who worked so hard to become a Major League Baseball player and had a very promising future in the game he loved so much," the family said less than two hours after the coroner's report was made public. "We will not rest until we learn the truth about how Tyler came into possession of these narcotics, including who supplied them." The 27-year-old Skaggs was found dead in his hotel room in the Dallas area July 1 before the start of what was supposed to be a four-game series against the Texas Rangers. The first game was postponed before the teams played the final three games. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office report said Skaggs died as a result of "mixed ethanol, fentanyl and oxycodone intoxication with terminal aspiration of gastric contents." It said simply: "Manner of death: Accident." The coroner's office didn't comment further. The death rocked baseball shortly before the All-Star Game and laid bare the emotions of Angels manager Brad Ausmus, star outfielder Mike Trout and fellow left-hander Andrew Heaney, his best friend on the team, along with the rest of his teammates and LA staff members. The family statement thanked police in the Dallas suburb of Southlake for its investigation and said they "were shocked to learn that it may involve an employee of the Los Angeles Angels." The family said it had hired Texas attorney Rusty Hardin to try to determine how Skaggs ended up with the drugs. "We are heartbroken to learn that the passing of our beloved Tyler was the result of a combination of dangerous drugs and alcohol," the family said. Southlake police said the investigation was ongoing and wouldn't release additional information. The Angels said the club was cooperating with the investigation. "We were unaware of the allegation and will investigate," MLB spokesman Pat Courtney said. Skaggs wouldn't necessarily have been subject to testing by Major League Baseball for the drugs found in his system. Players on 40-man rosters are tested for drugs of abuse only if the player-management joint treatment board finds reasonable cause, if a player has been found to have used or possessed a drug of abuse, or if a player is subjected to testing under a treatment program. The Southern California native was drafted by the Angels in the first round in 2009 and made his big league debut with Arizona three years later after being traded. Skaggs returned to the Angels in 2014 and missed all of the next season recovering from reconstructive surgery on his left elbow. He also spent more than three months on the disabled list in 2017 with a right oblique muscle strain. Skaggs was 28-38 with a 4.41 ERA in 96 career appearances, all starts. The day before he died, Skaggs posted a picture on Instagram of him and the Angels in cowboy hats and other western clothing outside their plane. Skaggs organized the effort because the club was stopping in both major league cities in Texas. The first game after Skaggs died was played without music or the usual in-game promotions for the Rangers, who painted his number "45" on the back of the mound at Globe Life Park. Ausmus and his players fought back tears talking about the death with reporters. In their first home game after Skaggs died, the Angels beat the Seattle Mariners 13-0 on a combined no-hitter from Taylor Cole and Félix Peña. All the LA players were wearing Skaggs' number and covered the mound with their jerseys after the victory. It was a day before what would have been Skaggs' 28th birthday......»»

FIBA: Near triple-double for Blatche as Gilas Pilipinas beats Adelaide 36ers

Gilas Pilipinas gets a huge boost in its preparations for the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China. The Philippine national team beat Australia’s Adelaide 36ers, 92 - 83, in a practice game Monday at the Meralco Gym. It’s the first of two games between the two teams and Gilas improved to 4-1 overall in its tune-ups ahead of the World Championships. Gilas was in control for most of the game until the 36ers’ strong fourth-quarter effort that gave them the lead, 81-80. Fortunately for the national team, Andray Blatche found RR Pogoy for a booming triple with 3:32 to go that sparked a 10-0 run for Gilas, regaining the lead that they’ll never lose until the final buzzer. Pogoy scored eight in that 10-0 run with Blatche assisting on all three baskets. Japeth Aguilar then dropped a two-hand power slam with 35 seconds left for a 92-83 lead that pretty much sealed the win. Blatche posted a near triple-double and finished with 19 points, 18 rebounds, and nine assists. Japeth Aguilar added 17 for Gilas while CJ Perez came off the bench and scored 12 points. RR Pogoy and Paul Lee were likewise in double figures with 10 points each.     The scores: GILAS PILIPINAS 92 - Blatche 19, Aguilar 17, Perez 12, Pogoy 10, Lee 10, Bolick 8, Almazan 7, Barroca 5, Fajardo 4, Norwood 0, Rosario 0. AP source: Indians dealing Bauer to Reds, get Puig in deal

By Tom Withers, Associated Press CLEVELAND (AP) — Trevor Bauer’s final act for the Indians was throwing a ball over the center-field wall. Yasiel Puig ended his season with Cincinnati in another brawl. Cleveland agreed to trade Bauer, the talented but taxing right-hander, to the Reds on Tuesday night for Puig in a three-team deal that also involves the San Diego Padres, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press. The Indians, who are trying to catch the Minnesota Twins in the AL Central, also get left-hander Scott Moss from Cincinnati and slugging outfielder Franmil Reyes, lefty Logan Allen and infielder Victor Nova from the Padres, said the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because the trade had not been announced. San Diego receives minor league outfielder Taylor Trammell from the Reds, the person said. In his last start for the Indians on Sunday, Bauer, who is not eligible for free agency until after the 2020 season, threw a ball in frustration from the mound in Kansas City over the center-field wall. The moment seemed to push the Indians over the edge with the enigmatic 28-year-old, who has one of baseball’s best arms but can be difficult. Bauer was fined by Major League Baseball for his startling heave, a person familiar with the discipline told the AP. The person spoke Tuesday on condition of anonymity because the discipline was not announced. Bauer talked and exchanged hugs with several teammates in the clubhouse following Cleveland’s 2-0 loss to the Houston Astros before he departed around 10:45 p.m. He declined to speak with reporters. The Reds did not confirm the trade, but Puig said he’s bound for Cleveland, where the club’s front office was being celebrated for not only getting rid of Bauer but for adding young, quality players who can impact the playoff race. “I’m going to miss all my teammates here,” Puig said after the Reds lost 11-4 to Pittsburgh. “This part of the year is amazing for me, being on this team and the city. Now it’s time to move forward and go to my new team and help my team go to the playoffs. ... I want to say thank you to all the city, Cincinnati. We stay next door — we’re going to Cleveland.” A former All-Star, Puig is batting .252 with 22 home runs, 61 RBIs and 14 steals in 100 games with the Reds, who acquired him in December in a seven-player swap with the Dodgers. The Cuban-born outfielder has a career .275 average with 130 homers and 391 RBIs in 812 games. He’s eligible for free agency after the 2019 season. Bauer is 9-8 with a 3.79 ERA in 24 starts this season, but he hasn’t been as consistent as the Indians have needed while waiting for two-time Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber (broken arm) and Carlos Carrasco (leukemia) to return to their rotation. Bauer had angered the Indians during the offseason for comments he made after winning his arbitration case and pledging he would only sign one-year deals going forward. Cleveland has been looking to add power to its lineup and Puig and Reyes will help. However, Puig is facing a possible suspension after he was involved in another brawl with the Pirates just as the trade was coming together. In the ninth inning, Reds reliever Amir Garrett rushed the Pirates’ dugout and threw punches, starting a brawl prolonged by Puig. As he left the field for the final time, Puig was given a warm ovation from Reds fans. He was also at the center of a melee between the teams in April, when Puig seemed to be taking on the entire Pirates team by himself near home plate. The 24-year-old Reyes hit .255 with 27 homers and 46 RBIs in 99 games with the Padres this season. In his last 29 games, the right-handed hitter is batting .290 with eight homers and 13 RBIs. ___ AP Sports Writer Joe Kay in Cincinnati contributed to this report......»»

Russian boxer, 28, dies after suffering brain injury in ring

By James Ellingworth, Associated Press MOSCOW (AP) — Boxer Maxim Dadashev died Tuesday, two days after suffering a brain injury in a fight in Maryland. He was 28. The Russian Boxing Federation said Dadashev suffered a brain swelling in Friday's light-welterweight fight with Subriel Matias at the Theater at MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland. He underwent surgery but his heart stopped Tuesday, the federation said. Dadashev was hospitalized at UM Prince George's Hospital Center shortly after the fight, which was stopped by his corner following the 11th round after Dadashev took numerous shots to the head. Footage from the fight shows Dadashev shaking his head in his corner as his trainer, Buddy McGirt, pleads with him to stop the fight, telling him: "You're getting hit too much, Max. Please, Max, please let me do this." Shortly after, the referee stopped the bout at McGirt's request. The Russian Boxing Federation's secretary general, Umar Kremlev, said the federation would investigate whether anyone was at fault for Dadashev's death. "We need to know the truth about what happened," Kremlev wrote in an email to The Associated Press. "I believe that some human factors intervened, that there was some kind of violation." He added the federation would give Dadashev's family financial support. Both fighters were 13-0 before the bout, which offered the winner the right to challenge IBF titleholder Josh Taylor. Dadashev had been viewed as a rising star after beating two former world lightweight champions, Darleys Perez and Antonio DeMarco, last year. Before Friday's fight, he had won 11 of his 13 fights by way of knockout. In a statement, promotor Top Bank called Dadashev "a talented fighter inside the ring and a loving husband and father outside the ropes." He was originally from the Russian city of St. Petersburg but had fought exclusively in the United States since turning pro in 2016. "He was a very kind person who fought until the very end," Dadashev's wife, Elizaveta Apushkina, said in a statement issued by the hospital. "Our son will continue (to) be raised to be a great man like his father. Lastly, I would like to thank everyone that cared for Maxim during his final days." The Russian embassy in the U.S. said in a statement on Facebook it is "ready to provide any necessary assistance for (Dadashev's) repatriation to Russia.".....»»

Pasaol wills Balanga to first title in Chooks 3x3 Patriot s Cup

For the fourth time in as many legs in the 2019 Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas 3x3 Patriot's Cup presented by Coca-Cola, there was a different champion. Wilkins-Balanga Pure topped archrivals Gold's Gym-Pasig Kings in the final, 21-17 (1:26), Saturday afternoon at SM Megamall Events Center. And the x-factor for Balanga in this tournament endorsed by FIBA 3X3 and sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas was the return of Santi Santillan, who missed the first three legs. "Laking bagay ni Santi kasi lalo kaming lumaki. Grabe din yung mga shots niya," said Alvin Pasaol as Santillan was a huge part in the then-1Bataan Risers' second-place finish in the President's Cup two months ago. With Balanga behind 8-9 midway through the finale, Santillan knocked down a quick deuce to spark a 7-2 run to gain a four-point edge. "Yun lang nasa isip ko. Sabi ko sa sarili ko nakapag bumalik ako ng 3x3, dapat champion ako. Na-miss ko yung larong ito," said Santillan. Pasig's 1-2 punch Taylor Statham and Joshua Munzon rallied their squad back, cutting the lead to just two with 2:29 remaining, 16-18. Prince Orizu though was able to stop Balanga's bleeding while Pasaol sent Balanga to championship-point with 1:55 left.  Pasaol then made sure to end the game, scoring on a tough runner over Nikola Pavlovic and Taylor Statham with 1:26 to spare to bag the PhP 100, 000 pot. Pasaol and Santillan had eight and seven markers, respectively, while Karl Dehesa added five points. Munzon paced Pasig with 10 points, all on deuces. Pasig and Balanga will enter the Grand Finals on Saturday, July 27 still at SM Megamall as the second- and third-seeds, respectively. Balanga dropped VetHealth-Delhi 3BL down to solo fourth (290 points) after taking a thrilling 21-20 (1:04) semifinals win. In the other bracket, Pasig eliminated third leg champs Phenom-Basilan Steel, 17-7. Still, Basilan will enter the last leg as the top -seed with 330 points. The top four teams will automatically gain a quarterfinals berth for the fifth leg that has PhP 1, 000, 000 and a ticket to the 2019 Jeddah Masters as top prize. The bottom eight teams, on the other hand, will compete in a knockout stage to advance to the quarterfinals. In the side events, Delhi's Kiran Shastri won the Coca-Cola Two-Point Shootout for the fourth straight time while Jebb Bulawan ended David Carlos' four-peat bid in the Coca-Cola Slam Dunk Competition......»»
