UAAP: Whether or not it s his last game, Alvin Pasaol left it all on the floor for UE

Alvin Pasaol’s third season for University of the East wound up in another loss – in fact, it was their 13th out of 14 games in the UAAP Season 81 Men’s Basketball Tournament. Still, Pasaol was all smiles while reporters were speaking with him after they fell to National University on Sunday at the MOA Arena. “Walang pagsisisi kung ito last game ko. Lumaban naman kami,” he said. For weeks, there has been talk that the Red Warriors’ scoring machine was foregoing of his fourth and final playing year. Indeed, after the final buzzer sounded, it very much looked like he had played his last game in red and white – with tears running down his eyes as he hugged his teammates. Alvin Pasaol has already cemented himself as a UE and UAAP legend, no matter what. 💪 #UAAPSeason81 pic.twitter.com/t2geMQuyzR — ABS-CBN Sports (@abscbnsports) Nobyembre 18, 2018 After they closed their campaign, yet again out of the Final Four, however, Pasaol himself reiterated that he remains uncertain about his next move. “Baka pag-iisipan ko pa yung (PBA) Draft. December 3 pa (deadline of application) so may one week pa ako para mag-isip,” he said. After all, he still has a meeting scheduled with UE’s team management and coaching staff. “Mag-uusap pa kami ng may-ari pati coaches next week,” he said. Whatever happens then, the burly forward said he had fun throughout the season – even if at the end of it all, they were holding a 1-13 record. “Sobrang parang roller-coaster yung nangyari sa amin. ‘Di namin in-expect na ganito mangyayari sa amin, pero sobrang happy ako kasama teammates ko,” he said. And while he remains uncertain about his next move, one thing’s for sure – Pasaol will never be forgotten in Recto. “Iiwan ko ang UE na lumalaban kahit talo. Nandun pa rin ang puso at lumalaban kaming lahat,” he said. He then continued, “Baka last year ko na ‘to so nagpapasalamat ako sa kanila.” If this is, indeed, his last season, he will have gone out with a bang by averaging 24.4 points – the highest scoring for a single player in a single season since 2003. That is more than two points better than the 22.2 points Terrence Romeo normed five years ago. And as if that’s not enough, he will also always have that 49-point game. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

PVL: Angels complete semis cast

PetroGazz barely broke a sweat in sweeping hapless Adamson-Akari, 25-21, 25-9, 25-15, Sunday to complete the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Open Conference semifinals cast at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan. The Angels started out flat but was quick to recover to claim their third straight win for an 8-5 win-loss record while adding more woes to the winless Lady Falcons. PetroGazz joined BanKo (10-3), Ateneo-Motolite (10-4) and Creamline (9-3) in the best-of-three Final Four after completing a back-to-back weekend schedule sweep. The Jerry Yee-mentored squad defeated Ateneo-Motolite in four sets last Saturday.  The Angels’ victory booted out Pocari Sweat-Air Force, which missed the semis for the first time in franchise history, and Tacloban, which are tied at 6-7 slates. Jessey de Leon poured 13 of her 14 points on attacks to highlight the Angels' 46-kill performance. Cherry Nunag and Alyssa Layug added 13 and 11 markers, respectively, for PetroGazz.   The Lady Falcons, who fielded Eli Soyud for the first time after recovering from a knee injury but still played without Bernadette Flora (back spasm) and Lea Anne Perez (ankle sprain), absorbed its 12th straight loss in as many games. No Adamson-Akari player scored in double figures with rookie Trisha Genesis posting six points while Soyud, who only played in the third set, and Chrislyn Uy added five markers each.           --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

UAAP: DLSZ tower-less for rest of year as Cortez recovers from injury

Raven Cortez is yet to play his first game for De La Salle Zobel in the UAAP 81 Juniors Basketball Tournament. Now two games into the tournament, the Junior Archers continue to miss the services of their third-year tower. As it turns out, Cortez suffered a right knee injury even before the beginning of the season. “Nagka-MCL bruise po ako nung August pa,” he shared. That has forced him to miss out DLSZ’s first two games in the season as well as, apparently, the rest of the first round. “Second round pa po ako makakabalik,” he said. The season’s first round will run through the remaining two months of 2018 while the second round will start in January 2019. Because of that, the boys from Alabang would have big shoes to fill – big shoes that were worn by a 6-foot-7 big man who averaged 11.8 point, 11.4 rebounds, 3.7 blocks, and 1.5 assists a season ago. Thus far, without him, they have recorded a win-loss record of 1-1. When Cortez finally returns, however, he only promises to be stronger than ever. “I promise na I’ll be back stronger and do my best to help the team be in the Final Four again,” he said. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

‘Hungrier’ UST Salinggawi ‘will be back’ after narrowly missing UAAP Cheerdance podium

It took the most miniscule of points for University of Santo Tomas from entering the podium in one electric UAAP Season 81 Cheerdance Competition. The UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe failed to enter the top three after tallying 638 points, just 0.5 points less than bronze medalist Adamson University, and that tiny error became the talking point of nearly thousands of social media users that watched the event on Saturday. For head coach Mark Chaiwalla, who led UST to the silver medal in Season 80, the public outcry was the consolation they need after narrowly missing out on the podium for Season 81. "I'm okay with it because after the performance I was really happy just with the ...Keep on reading: ‘Hungrier’ UST Salinggawi ‘will be back’ after narrowly missing UAAP Cheerdance podium.....»»

UP Pep Squad aims to be better next after another 6th place finish

The UAAP Cheerdance Competition and University of the Philippines have almost become synonymous with each other ever since UP started raking in titles from 1999 to 2012. UP always seemed to find itself in a spot wherein the spectators always demanded the best out of it, but the UP Pep Squad hasn't lived up to the expectation for the past two editions of the competition. After they skipped the 2016 edition and returned the followng year, the UP Pep Squad has since finished just sixth place in 2017 and 2018. Its captains, though, don't mind finishing in an unflattering result as long as they've put on a show the UP community can appreciate. Warriors Green out against Mavericks with sprained toe

DALLAS (AP) — Golden State’s Draymond Green will miss the game against the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday night (Sunday, PHL time) with a recurrence of a right toe injury. It will be the second time in three games that Green has been sidelined. The volatile forward was suspended for a game by the team following a testy exchange with Kevin Durant at the end of regulation in an overtime loss at the Los Angeles Clippers. Green was suspended for the Warriors’ win at home against Atlanta before returning in a loss at Houston. Green has already missed two games with a right toe sprain after getting injured against Memphis on Nov. 5 (Nov. 6, PHL time). Golden State also will be without star guard Stephen Curry for the fifth straight game. Curry has a strained left groin......»»

Old School Power Rankings 2018-19: Weeks 3 and 4

By Scott Wraight, NBA.com It was bound to happen, right? The King was never, ever going to give up his throne to anyone else. Period. Because of that, we had to separate him from the rest of the field and give out a new ranking: ATHO (All To His Own). So unless something crazy happens during the season -- or an injury -- No. 1 will have an asterisk of sorts. Now that the chase has opened up for everyone else, it should make for an interesting and intriguing run to the finish line, asterisk be damned. Notes: - Statistics are through games of Nov. 15 (Nov. 16, PHL time) - Any player who turns 32 during regular season can be added to rankings. - Check out previous rankings - Send comments to my email. If it's good -- and clean -- it may appear in a future column. Be sure to include your first name and city. ATHO. LeBron James (33), Los Angeles Lakers Previous rank: 1 Latest stats: 6 games, 27.5 ppg, 7.0 rpg, 6.2 apg Season stats: 27.6 ppg, 7.9 rpg, 7.2 apg Wednesday's (Thursday, PHL time) 44-point performance against the Trail Blazers was the one. That was the one that pushed the King into his own tier, his own neighborhood, his own ranking. He just refuses to make it fair for everyone else. That's how good he is. In addition to Wednesday's (Thursday, PHL time) superior effort, James has gone for 25 or more in eight of the last 10. _______________________________________________________________ 1. Marc Gasol (33), Memphis Grizzlies Previous rank: 4 Latest stats: 7 games, 16.4 ppg, 8.9 rpg, 4.6 apg Season stats: 15.9 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 4.1 apg After eclipsing 15 points in just three of the first six, Gasol has surpassed the mark in four straight, which included Wednesday's (Thursday, PHL time) effort in which he tied a career high with six three's. Of course the splits over the last seven left us puzzled. In four wins, Gasol went for 21.0 ppg, 9.8 rpg and 52.2 3PT%. In three losses: 10.3 ppg, 7.7 rpg and 0-for-8 from deep. 2. Chris Paul (33), Houston Rockets Previous rank: 3 Latest stats: 8 games, 16.0 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 7.1 apg Season stats: 17.0 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 7.5 apg We were ready to move Paul to the top of the list until Thursday's (Friday, PHL time) effort: 10 points (4-for-10 shooting) and seven assists against the Warriors. In two previous games, Paul managed 21 and 26 on 15-for-25 shooting. Of course four previous contests saw him combine for just 39 points on 15-for-47 (31.9) shooting. It's been a bit of a roller coaster ride in November. 3. LaMarcus Aldridge (33), San Antonio Spurs Previous rank: 2 Latest stats: 7 games, 14.1 ppg, 12.9 rpg, 1.6 apg Season stats: 17.4 ppg, 11.0 rpg, 2.4 apg He's scoring at home while rebounding on the road. In three home games, Aldridge went for 21.0 ppg and 9.3 rpg. In four road games, he averaged 9.0 ppg and 15.5 rpg. Aldridge has been hot and cold this month, failing to score in double figures in two of seven and scoring 20 or more just twice. One consistent has been the board work, grabbing 10 or more in five straight. 4. JJ Redick (34), Philadelphia 76ers Previous rank: 7 Latest stats: 7 games, 17.9 ppg, 1.4 rpg, 3.7 apg Season stats: 18.2 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 3.5 apg Redick is feeling it of late, pouring in 20 or more points and hitting at least three three-pointers in three consecutive games. Coincidentally, he's started the last three games after beginning the season on the bench. We've also taken notice of Redick's volume of long-range shots, making 3.0 treys a game and attempting 8.3 -- both career highs. 5. Lou Williams (32), LA Clippers Previous rank: Just missed Latest stats: 6 games, 21.3 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 5.7 apg Season stats: 19.4 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 4.1 apg Hello there, newbie. Williams, who just turned 32 on Oct. 27, sprints up the list on the strength of five games with 20 or more points -- all while averaging less than 30 minutes (29.4) per game. In fact, the only game he didn't go for 20, he added 10 assists. Digging deeper, the last time Williams failed to break double-figure scoring was Nov. 20, 2017. 6. Kyle Lowry (32), Toronto Raptors Previous rank: 5 Latest stats: 6 games, 13.7 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 10.0 apg Season stats: 16.1 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 10.7 apg Lowry, who finally saw his streak of games with 10-plus assists end at nine, has been a bit of a road warrior over the last handful of games. In his last three home games, he averaged 9.3 points, 8.7 assists and 40.0 FG%. In three road games, Lowry managed 18.0 points, 11.3 assists and 46.3 FG%. 7.  Wesley Matthews (32), Dallas Mavericks Previous rank: 6 Latest stats: 5 games, 12.4 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 2.4 apg Season stats: 16.2 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 2.4 apg After starting the season with six straight double-figure scoring games, Matthews has gone for 10 or more in just three of the last seven. He missed one game with a hamstring injury and had to leave Wednesday's (Thursday, PHL time) game after just 21 minutes with the same injury, so that'll skew the numbers a bit, which is why he only fell one spot. 8.  Taj Gibson (33), Minnesota Timberwolves Previous rank: NA Latest stats: 7 games, 12.4 ppg, 7.6 rpg, 1.9 apg Season stats: 11.3 ppg, 7.1 rpg, 1.4 apg Gibson started the season sluggishly, failing to score more than 13 points in any of the first 10 games. Since then, the gritty veteran has gone for 15 or more in three of the last five. Also in those first 10 games, Gibson managed to snag nine or more boards just once. He's done that three times in the last five contests. 9.  Dwight Howard (32), Washington Wizards Previous rank: NA Latest stats: 7 games, 12.6 ppg, 9.0 rpg, 0.4 apg Season stats: 12.6 ppg, 9.0 rpg, 0.4 apg After missing the first seven games of the season with a back injury, Howard is starting to get into a groove. In addition to scoring in double figures in four straight, he has snatched eight or more rebounds in five of the last six. His return to the lineup might also be a reason the Wizards have started to turn things around, winning four of their last six. 10. Goran Dragic (32), Miami Heat Previous rank: 9 Latest stats: 4 games, 16.0 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 4.5 apg Season stats: 17.1 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 4.8 apg The theme song from Facts of Life keeps running through my head: "You take the good, you take the bad ..." That rings very true with Dragic, who in his four games had three with 20 or more points and one with a goose egg on 0-for-7 shooting. Now, we won't pile on since we realize he missed a pair of games with a knee injury. Just missed the cut: Paul Millsap, JJ Barea, Dwyane Wade, Al Horford, Jeff Green The views on this page do not necessarily reflect the views of the NBA, its clubs or Turner Broadcasting......»»

Portugal qualifies for finals, Italy earn positives in draw

By Daniella Matar, Associated Press MILAN (AP) — No Cristiano Ronaldo, no problem. Portugal drew with Italy 0-0 on Saturday to pick up the point it needed to qualify for the UEFA Nations League finals and confirm it as host of the first Final Four in June. Ronaldo is taking a break from the national team and wasn't present at San Siro, just as he wasn't in Portugal's first two Nations League matches — both of which they won. "There's a lot of satisfaction at having reached the final phase," Portugal coach Fernando Santos said. "It was a difficult match, much more than we thought it would be. When we had the ball it was difficult to build and that was merit to Italy and demerit to us. Italy had a great game." Poland has already been assured of finishing last in Group A3 and will be relegated to League B, and Italy will finish second. However, a year after Italian football's darkest moment, there are positive signs for the Azzurri. Italy dominated and had the better of the chances in front of a packed crowd in Milan but ended with a sixth successive home draw. The Azzurri have also scored only twice in four matches in the competition — but only conceded as many. "I don't think there's so many problems up front, it's a question of five centimeters here, 10 there," Italy coach Roberto Mancini said. The Azzurri almost took the lead as early as the fifth minute. Lorenzo Insigne unleashed a scorcher from distance which Portugal goalkeeper Rui Patricio did well to bat away, and Ciro Immobile fired the rebound over from point-blank range. There was a lot of good interplay from the hosts with crisp, efficient passing in the best performance seen by an Italy side in a long time. It was a far cry from Italy's last match at San Siro, when it drew with Sweden 0-0 last November and failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time in six decades. "Little by little we'll manage to sort out the attack, too," Mancini said. "Having so much possession in their half is something very significant. We're a step further ahead than we thought we'd be. We have to resolve this small problem (of scoring) but we will." The fans are also starting to fall back in love with the Azzurri, with 73,000 spectators at San Siro. LEAGUE B Sweden kept alive its hopes of promotion with a 1-0 victory at Turkey, which was relegated to League C. Andreas Granqvist netted the only goal with a second-half penalty after Okay Yokuslu brought down Marcus Berg. Sweden will be promoted on Tuesday if it beats Russia, which leads Group B2. LEAGUE C Scotland will win Group C1 if it beats Israel on Tuesday following a 4-0 victory over 10-man Albania in Tirana. Ryan Fraser scored his first international goal shortly before Albania captain Mergim Mavraj was sent off. Steven Fletcher doubled Scotland's tally from the penalty spot, and James Forrest netted a second-half double. Serbia beat Montenegro 2-1 despite Aleksandar Mitrovic missing a penalty and will win Group C4 if it beats Lithuania on Tuesday. Mitrovic scored Serbia's second, two minutes after Adem Ljajic opened the scoring, before chipping over from the spot. Lithuania lost 3-0 at Romania, which will go up if it beats Montenegro and Serbia fails to win. LEAGUE D Kosovo beat Malta 5-0 and Azerbaijan beat the Faroe Islands 2-0. The teams set up a winner-takes-all clash when they meet on Tuesday in Group D3, although a draw would be enough for Kosovo. The Nations League also offers a second chance to qualify for the European Championship in 2020. The 16 group winners in Leagues A, B, C and D — or the next best-placed teams who have not already qualified via the European qualifiers starting in March — will progress to the playoffs to compete for the last four qualifying places......»»
