Propaganda war
There is a second battlefield that those involved in unavoidable conflicts should consider if they are to win the war. Experts love to call it the propaganda war, one that is fought not on the field, but in the hearts and minds of the international community, which is just as intense and vital as the physical war. In the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict and the tension between China and the Philippines in the West Philippine Sea, propaganda plays a pivotal role in shaping international perception, gaining domestic support, and influencing the narrative of these disputes. The Israel-Hamas conflict is one of human history’s most enduring and deeply entrenched disputes. Both parties employ propaganda to advance their respective narratives and garner support from both domestic and international audiences. Israel and Hamas turn to propaganda to shape the narrative of the conflict. Israel emphasizes its right to self-defense, portraying Hamas as a terrorist organization that fires rockets indiscriminately at Israeli civilians. On the other hand, Hamas portrays itself as a resistance movement fighting against Israeli oppression, garnering support from various sympathizers. Media manipulation is a crucial aspect of the propaganda war in this conflict. Both sides use social media, videos, and press releases to share their version of events. The viral nature of social media allows these messages to spread quickly and influence public opinion worldwide. Both Israel and Hamas leverage propaganda to portray themselves as victims. Israel highlights the trauma and suffering of its civilians subjected to rocket attacks, while Hamas emphasizes the civilian casualties in Gaza caused by Israeli military operations. The propaganda war in the Israel-Hamas conflict deepens divisions between both sides and makes a peaceful resolution even more challenging. It also has broader implications for regional and international relations, as support for one party over the other can be influenced by the effectiveness of their propaganda efforts. The tension between China and the Philippines in the West Philippine Sea, on the other hand, is characterized by competing territorial claims and power disparities, making propaganda an important tool in the conflict. China has utilized propaganda to assert its territorial claims in the South China Sea, including the West Philippine Sea. The “nine-dash line” map and historical claims are frequently promoted, often without international legal basis. Propaganda is also employed to discredit the Philippines and other claimants. China has accused the Philippines of aggression and portrayed itself as a guardian of regional peace, which may appeal to domestic audiences and some international allies. China’s naval and aerial displays in the South China Sea are often publicized to intimidate and demonstrate its military prowess. These actions are combined with nationalist rhetoric in domestic propaganda to showcase China’s strength and resolve. The use of propaganda in the China-Philippines tension exacerbates regional instability and hinders peaceful negotiations. It raises questions about how diplomacy can succeed in the face of intense nationalist propaganda within China and the resulting pressure on the Philippine government to protect its sovereignty. If you notice, China often resorts to the blame game in countering any protest from the Philippines whenever there are incidents of aggression in the disputed waters. In the case of the latest harassment of Philippine vessels on a resupply mission to Ayungin shoal, China blamed the Philippines for the collision. It immediately sent to the media its video of the incident. The intensity of the propaganda in these conflicts can hinder diplomatic efforts. It reinforces entrenched positions, making it difficult for parties to find common ground. As these conflicts persist, the role of propaganda in perpetuating hostilities and deepening divisions cannot be underestimated. Efforts to promote peace and resolution must be mindful of propaganda’s role in perpetuating these conflicts. The post Propaganda war appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Cesafi to players, fans: Rough play, heckling below the belt won’t be tolerated.
CEBU CITY, Philippines — Lawyer Boyet Velez, Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (Cesafi) deputy commissioner, has given a stern warning to the players and fans that they will impose sanctions and even ban those who have harmful intensions in actions or words during the games. Velez told CDN Digital that their technical committee has been stringent in reviewing the Cesafi basketball games to see if there are any other players who intentionally caused physical harm on-court. READ: Keaton Taburnal of CRMC Mustangs suspended for two games by Cesafi Taburnal suspension It was in light of the two-game suspension of Cebu Roosevelt Memorial Colleges (CRMC) Mustangs’ Keaton Clyde Taburnal, who was caught on tape hitting University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters’ John Herben Linares in the abdomen during their October 14 game at the Cebu Coliseum — a game which was won by UC, 84-68. Aside from the two-game suspension, Taburnal had to pay a fine of P10,000, and do four hours of community service. Although Taburnal already publicly apologized from the incident, Velez wants to remain vigilant because this kind of acts can tarnish Cesafi’s reputation. READ: CRMC Mustangs coach on Taburnal’s suspension: This will be a learning experience Serious business “In Cesafi, we mean serious business, we instill discipline to our players, we impose the rules and regulations of Cesafi. So, to the fans and to the players, especially to the players, this is a good example of what we did,” said Velez. “Even if you’re not caught during the game, but we have the technical committee to do the review, on what transpired during the game. Under our rules, if you inflict bodily harm, we can impose sanction to the player, similar to what happened to Taburnal, even though he wasn’t caught and there was no whistle during the game, however, right after the incident, we reviewed the video, we found out he intentionally harmed Linares,” he said. READ: Gun-shy Patrick Yu pulls trigger late to anchor NU victory over La Salle Heckling fans Velez also warned the fans that they would get banned from watching the games at the Cebu Coliseum if they would be caught heckling. He said they would do this after the Cesafi officials received several complaints about the unruly behavior of some fans. “Before the start of the game, we addressed the fans, asking them to cheer and jeer, but not to heckle.....»»
Taylor Swift spotted as rumored beau Kelce’s Chiefs play NY Jets
Taylor Swift has remained mum on her rumored relationship with NFL star Travis Kelce, but the pop superstar was on hand again Sunday as Kelce's Kansas City Chiefs took on the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium outside the Big Apple. The 33-year-old "Lavender Haze" singer was spotted, clad in crystal-studded denim shorts and a long-sleeved black shirt, entering the building with actors Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, and Hugh Jackman. She was soon ensconced in a luxury suite, with one social media poster getting a cellphone video of her playfully sticking out her tongue as she was filmed. InStyle reported Swift had been seen dining in New York with Brittany Mahomes, wife of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the night before the game. Swift sparked a fan frenzy -- among NFL watchers and her own legion of "Swifties" -- when she attended the Chiefs' home game against the Chicago Bears last weekend, sitting in a luxury box alongside Kelce's mother, Donna. The 12-time Grammy winner, sporting a red and white Chiefs jacket, was treated to a 41-10 Chiefs romp and cheered wildly when Kelce, a two-time Super Bowl winner and one of the top tight ends in the league, caught a three-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Kelce himself said in his New Heights podcast on Wednesday that he "sure as hell enjoyed" the weekend. "Shout out to Taylor for pulling up. That was pretty ballsy," said Kelce, who was cagey about the exact nature of their relationship. "I know I brought all this attention to me," the podcast regular said. "I want to respect both of our lives." Swift's interest, however, has made Kelce the focus of a whole new set of fans. After a report Tuesday citing merchandise company Fanatics that his jersey sales had climbed more than 400 percent, Kelce said: "Sounds like the Swifties are also part of Chiefs Kingdom." The NFL, no strangers to celebrity spectacle, was quick to the buzz brought by Swift, posting plenty of pictures of Swift and friends as they enjoyed the Chiefs-Jets Game, which occupied the coveted "Sunday Night Football" slot. Broadcaster NBC was also on the bandwagon, airing a Swift-themed ad for the game that used Swift's hit song "Welcome to New York." Fans posting on social media platform X were poking fun at NBC early in the game for the numerous shots of Swift and friends watching the game. Video games give sports stars second life
The post-retirement careers of the biggest sports stars can be fascinating to watch -- Viagra ads, property ventures, crypto projects -- but one option is becoming a sure-fire winner: put your face on the cover of a video game. And death is no barrier for this particular career, with two popular games this year choosing sports legends who are no longer with us. LA Lakers basketball star Kobe Bryant, who died in a helicopter accident in 2020, graces the cover of "NBA 2K24". And two of the world's greatest footballers from bygone eras -- Pele and Johan Cruyff -- get posthumous respect with their figures emblazoned on "FC 24" from EA Sports. They are joined on the cover of the EA game by a galaxy of still-living stars of the more recent past -- Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldinho -- and present -- Erling Haaland and Alexia Putellas. French legend Zidane told AFP in June that many young children now knew him largely through his appearance in the EA's game, formerly known as "FIFA". "Kids aged eight to 10 don't know me, unless their dads have told them about what I did back in the day," said the World Cup winner. "It's more through PlayStation, so it's kind of funny. I'm used to it." Marketing nostalgia The ties between video game publishers and sports stars go deep, particularly in the United States. The leading video game series on American football bears the name of a former player, John Madden, who retired in 1978 to become a sports commentator. Julien Pillot, an economist specializing in cultural industries, told AFP the endorsement of bona fide legends was clearly a powerful marketing tool. And the often huge cost of getting their endorsement, he said, was "more than offset" by the sales they generate -- both of the games themselves and the ubiquitous in-game "cards" required to unlock additional content. Gaming firms were playing on the "intergenerational aspect" and adding "a touch of nostalgia", said Pillot. It's a feature that executives are not shy about highlighting. "My seven-year-old only really knows who Pele is because of his amazing rating on FC," David Jackson, vice-president of the EA Sports FC brand, told AFP. He said the game had allowed fans to feel a little bit of the magic of playing with stars from earlier generations. And it works both ways, according to some of the stars involved -- even those who don't rate as highly as Pele. "People of a certain generation know me by what I've done on the pitch," said World Cup winner Robert Pires at the launch party for the EA game in Paris. But a 12-year-old boy told Pires recently he had only learnt who the French star was through playing the game. "I asked him: 'Am I good?'" said Pires. "He told me: 'You're good, but you're slow.'" BALMING TIGER DROPS FRESH SINGLE ‘KAMEHAMEHA’
Seoul-based collective Balming Tiger has released its new single “Kamehameha” and announced its debut album January Never Dies, scheduled for release on 19 October. A diverse music collective taking its name from the famous Asian ointment Tiger Balm, Balming Tiger describes itself as a “multinational alternative K-pop band” with a desire to create an impact globally and carve a uniquely captivating lane for K-pop. The main creative vision of Balming Tiger is to reflect and represent the younger generation of today’s society, aiming to further popularize hyper-expressive Asian youth culture throughout the world while drawing inspiration from a wider spectrum of global influences. Bouncy and playful, “Kamehameha’s” experimental soundscape pays homage to the Korean drinking game of the same name, simulating the light-headed, overconfident experience of being heavily intoxicated. The track is produced by bj wjwn and features vocals and melodies by sogumm. The track’s stripped-back composition varies from previous singles, providing another stylishly diverse addition to the collective’s expansive discography. The AI-inspired single artwork and surreal, cinematic music video were created by Balming Tiger’s visual artist Chanhee Hong. This is the fourth single to be unveiled from its forthcoming album, following the widescreen “SOS” in April, the radiant “Trust Yourself” in January and “SEXY NUKIM” in September of 2022 featuring RM of legendary K-pop band BTS, which achieved record-breaking results including reaching #1 on Billboard’s ‘World Digital Song Sales’ chart. The music video for “SEXY NUKIM (feat. RM of BTS)” has surpassed 16 million views. Balming Tiger consists of performers Omega Sapien, sogumm, bj wnjn and Mudd the student (who recently appeared on South Korea’s most popular music TV show SMTM, garnering millions of views), producers San Yawn and Unsinkable, video directors Jan’ Qui and Leesuho, DJ Abyss, visual artist Chanhee Hong and writer Henson Hwang. Each artist in this ensemble expresses a different artistic identity and energy, as well as a wide range of versatility in crafting the group’s distinct visual world. This year, Balming Tiger will cap off its world tour in Bangkok, Thailand, at the Maho Rasop Festival on 2 December. Gello Marquez drops self-titled debut album
Idol Philippines season 1 alumnus Gello Marquez is ready to serenade music listeners with his newly released debut album under Star Music. “Dati nangangarap lang ako na magkaroon ako ng sariling kanta, ngayon album pa yung ibinigay. Sobrang overwhelming para sa akin na nangyayari ang lahat ng ito,” Gello said during his album launch held 7 September. The self-titled album has seven Filipino tracks including “Hanap Kong Baby,” “Kumot At Unan,” “Duda-duda,” “Kaibigan,” “Teddy Bear,” “Torpe,” and his first single “Penpen” released last month. The easy listening tracks were chosen based on his affinity for old songs. “It’s a modernized version of old songs kasi sobrang love ko ‘yung mga lumang kanta,” said Gello on his album. The young actor-singer, previously seen in He’s Into Her and Love Bites, compares love to a game of hiding feelings and trying to find it in the song “Penpen.” Inspired by the Filipino game “Penpen de Sarapen,” “Penpen” was composed by Allan G. Alveyra Jr. and Karl James Fabregas. Gello also previously released the music video for “Penpen,” which features a love triangle between him, BGYO member Akira Morishita and former Pinoy Big Brother Otso housemate Ashley del Mundo. VACC lauds SC for firing road rage ex-cop
The Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption hailed the decision of the Supreme Court to terminate the employment of an employee who figured in a road rage video recently. The anti-crime group described as a prompt action of Supreme Court Associate Justice Ricardo Rosario to terminate the employment of the ex-cop who got into an altercation with a cyclist on the road. This was aired by VACC president Arsenio “Boy” Evangelista saying Rosario’s move would regain the trust and confidence of the public in the justice system, especially since the Supreme Court was dragged into the controversy due to the behavior of Wilfredo Gonzales on a bicycle rider on 8 August. Evangelista said that to many citizens on the brink of disillusionment about the country’s slow-grinding and sometimes unfair justice system, what the SC magistrate did gave them good reason for hope. Netizens condemned the action of Gonzales when the video of the incident went viral in social media with his drawn gun in front of the bicycle rider. The public condemnation also cost the position of Quezon City Police District Nicolas Torre III who opted to quit his post over social media backlash on the press conference he held with Gonzales. Evangelista said Justice Rosario’s action was a game changer towards attaining principled and swift justice in this country. The anti-crime crusader said he found no justification in Gonzales’ dangerous act of physically assaulting an unarmed cyclist and then pulling out his gun and cocking the pistol toward him. Evangelista said, “Whether or not it was the cyclist that provoked the altercation, the High Tribunal magistrate delivered what he believes is the highest standard of justice that Filipinos deserve. This he did quietly and without a speck of propaganda fanfare.” He also lauded Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo and the entire membership of the high bench for “upholding the decision” of Rosario to dismiss Gonzales. Florida gunman driven by racial ‘hate’ kills 3: authorities
A gunman in Jacksonville, Florida driven by racial hatred shot dead three Black people in a discount store Saturday before killing himself after a standoff with police, authorities said. "He targeted a certain group of people and that's Black people. That's what he said he wanted to kill. And that's very clear," Jacksonville Sheriff TK Waters told a news conference about the gunman, who was white and in his early 20s. According to the sheriff's office, the shooter, who has not yet been identified, entered the Dollar General store wearing a tactical vest, armed with an AR-style rifle and a handgun. Manifestos discovered by the gunman's family shortly before the attack "detail the shooter's disgusting ideology of hate," Waters said, and at least one of the guns had hand-drawn swastikas on it. The shooting took place near Edward Waters University, a historically Black college in the southern US state. The FBI would investigate the shooting as a hate crime, said Sherri Onks, the bureau's special agent for Jacksonville. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis decried the "horrific" shooting and called the gunman a "scumbag." "He was targeting people based on their race, that is totally unacceptable," said DeSantis, who is competing to be the Republican party's candidate for the 2024 White House race. "This guy killed himself rather than face the music and accept responsibility for his actions and so he took the coward's way out.” The shooting was the latest in a spate of gun violence this weekend in the United States. Mass shootings have become disturbingly common across the United States, with easy access to firearms in most states and more guns in the country than citizens. Earlier in the day at least seven people were hospitalized after a mass shooting at a Caribbean festival in the northeast city of Boston, police said. Meanwhile, two women were shot at a baseball game in Chicago the night before. That same night a 16-year-old was shot dead and four others hurt after an argument erupted at a high school football game in Oklahoma, local police said. The Jacksonville shooting comes after a self-declared white supremacist killed 10 Black people in a live-streamed shooting rampage at a supermarket in the US state of New York in May 2022. Payton Gendron planned the attack for months, targeting Tops Friendly Market in Buffalo because of the large African-American population in the surrounding neighborhood. He pleaded guilty to the killings in November. Saturday's shooting in Jacksonville is five years to the day after a mass shooting in the city when a gunman at a video game tournament killed two and wounded several others before killing himself. nro/acb © Agence France-Presse The post Florida gunman driven by racial ‘hate’ kills 3: authorities appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
UK court concludes teenager behind huge hacking campaign
A UK court on Wednesday found a teenager responsible for a hacking campaign that included one of the biggest breaches in the history of the video game industry. Arion Kurtaj, 18, was described by the prosecution as one of the "key players" in the Lapsus$ group that hacked Rockstar Games in 2022 and published footage from its still unreleased "Grand Theft Auto 6". Following a two-month case at London's Southwark Crown Court, a jury unanimously concluded that Kurtaj, whom psychiatrists deemed unfit to stand trial, had carried out 12 offenses. They included carrying out an unauthorized act to impair the operation of a computer, blackmail, and fraud. Kurtaj also threatened Rockstar Games he would leak the hacked source code for its latest Grand Theft Auto releases onto internet forums. Grand Theft Auto 5, the last iteration of the game that revolves around heists and street violence, was released in 2013 and has since sold 170 million copies and generated some $7 billion in revenue. Kurtaj and a 17-year-old youth, whose name cannot be published because of his age, were also accused of hacking software company Nvidia in February 2022 and threatening to release its intellectual property. The 17-year-old was on Wednesday found guilty of fraud and blackmail. Prosecutors said the pair hacked the servers of broadband provider BT and mobile operator EE before demanding a $ 4 million (3.7-million-euro) ransom. Sentencing dates have yet to be fixed for either defendant. The post UK court concludes teenager behind huge hacking campaign appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
UK’s Prince William ‘sorry’ to miss World Cup final
Britain's Prince William apologized Saturday for not traveling to Australia to attend the Women's World Cup final on Sunday, in which England will take on Spain. The Prince of Wales -- the chairman of England's Football Association -- has faced criticism over the decision not to travel to Sydney to watch the match. "Lionesses I want to send you a huge good luck for tomorrow, we're sorry we can't be there in person but we're so proud of everything you’ve achieved, and the millions you’ve inspired here and around the world," he said in a video on social media that shows him sitting next to his daughter Charlotte. "So go out there tomorrow and really enjoy yourselves." Princess Charlotte, who has a football balanced on her lap, added: "Good luck Lionesses." When the Lionesses kick off at Stadium Australia in Sydney for Sunday's match they will attempt to do what no England side, men or women, has managed since 1966 -- win the World Cup. England's women were crowned European champions in 2022. Britain's Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will not travel to Australia for the game. The government will be represented by Foreign Minister James Cleverly and Culture Minister Lucy Frazer. Hollywood’s video game craze takes meta turn with ‘Gran Turismo’
Ever since the huge successes of "The Super Mario Bros Movie," "Uncharted" and "The Last Of Us," films and TV shows adapted from video games have been all the rage in Hollywood. But when Neill Blomkamp received a call from Sony asking if he wanted to direct a movie based around its super-serious, hyper-realistic racing game series "Gran Turismo," he was initially confused. "I almost wanted to read the screenplay just to understand what they were talking about, because it just made no sense to me," he told AFP. "Obviously, it's just a racing simulator." Indeed, the "Gran Turismo" games have no characters like Italian plumbers or fungus-crazed zombies who would lend themselves to a straightforward Hollywood film adaptation. As a result, the movie's script -- penned by the writer of "King Richard" and "Creed III" -- took an entirely different and very meta approach. It is largely based instead on a marketing stunt, back in 2008, when Sony and Nissan launched a competition in which top "Gran Turismo" video gamers could test their skills on actual racetracks. The GT Academy took PlayStation gamers out from their bedrooms, and put them behind real racecar wheels. Each year's champion was then given a chance to race against professional drivers on world-famous tracks including Silverstone and Le Mans. One of those, Jann Mardenborough -- a working-class teen from Darlington, England, who was one of the first GT Academy gamers to successfully compete in real racing -- is the subject of the movie. "I was so struck by this approach of it being a biography, but also being a video game film," said Blomkamp, who previously directed "District 9" and "Elysium." "And that the video game would be an element inside that real world -- the way that 'Gran Turismo' exists in our world." Emotional heft Reviews for the movie have been mixed, with the Guardian dubbing it an "ode to product placement." But others praised the film's surprising emotional heft -- not least its treatment of a fatal accident involving Mardenborough. At Germany's famous Nurburgring circuit in 2015, Mardenborough's car flipped vertically into the air and crashed through a fence, killing one spectator and injuring several more. Mardenborough was cleared of any blame for the freak accident -- although the movie suggests that racing purists who disliked his gamer background continued to whisper otherwise. Particularly with the real Mardenborough acting as stunt double for his own character in the film, the tragic incident had to be tackled with care. "You can't tell his story without having that in it. It's such an integral part of his journey," said Blomkamp. But the crash is also "super sensitive for Jann," admitted Blomkamp. While the real Mardenborough performed other driving stunts throughout the movie, the decision was taken to recreate the fatal crash with "effectively 100 percent digital" technology. In part that was because the crash itself was so infamous and unusual, with the car going vertically airborne as it soared over a steeply undulating hill. "We tried to match what the car did, basically pixel perfect, from the video footage that we could find," said Blomkamp. Of course, using computer-generated visual effects (VFX) for that particular scene meant "there was no requirement for stunts at all." Strikes and hype Another obstacle for the movie has been Hollywood's ongoing strikes. The walkout, over actors' and writers' pay and other conditions, bars its stars such as Orlando Bloom, David Harbour and Archie Madekwe from promoting the film at the usual swanky premieres and junkets. Sony took the unusual decision to delay the film's release in theaters, from this Friday to August 25, and offered early sneak previews to fans until then, in the hope of building word-of-mouth hype. "The stars can't promote the movie, but the audience can," said a Sony spokesperson. The post Hollywood’s video game craze takes meta turn with ‘Gran Turismo’ appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
