From the Bay to the PH: Stephen Curry s Manila Tour

Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry made good on a promise he made to Filipinos three years ago -- to return to Manila.  Stephen’s game-breaking approach to basketball has scored him legions of adoring Filipino fans and followers from all around the globe who revel in every deep 3, every slippery drive to the rim, every sneaky steal.  His popularity has transcended borders, languages and cultures, and nowhere was that more evident than in Manila. Stephen’s first day began with a more than two hour on court workout with his trainer Brandon Payne. From shooting to speed and agility drills, Curry put in off season work as he continues to prepare for the upcoming NBA season. After touring a Jeepney, he traveled to Mall of Asia for the Under Armour Southeast Asia 3x3 Finals which saw he and his father, Dell Curry, on court for a shooting contest with other local fathers, sons and daughters. The competition was fierce but Dell and Stephen secured the win. From a press conference with journalists who came from all around Southeast Asia to cover the UA Brand House ribbon cutting to a skills competition shootout with his dad Dell, everywhere Stephen went in public, his Filipino fans followed in lockstep, fascinated by the presence of the two-time MVP and three-time World Champion. The fans weren’t the only ones awestruck - Stephen himself was blown away by the incredible landscape and cultural significance of the dense and bustling Manila.  Taking a quick tour of some city sights, Stephen then toured a Jeepney, the flamboyant WWII era truck that still can be found transporting residents throughout Manila. Curry capped off the day with a relaxing Filipino scalp massage at Titan and a visit to his shoe brand's main store. Before leaving the country, Curry dropped by the opening ceremony of UAAP season 81, where he led the legions of student-athletes in reciting the oath of sportsmanship. .@StephenCurry30 officially opens #UAAPSeason81! 🔥 — ABS-CBN Sports (@abscbnsports) September 8, 2018 After a busy three-day visit to Manila, much is left for the MVP's Asian Tour. ONE: Kevin Belingon s world title win is the product of team effort from Team Lakay

Friday night at the Mall of Asia Arena, Team Lakay’s Kevin Belingon became the latest member of Team Lakay to capture a world championship by defeating two-division titleholder Martin Nguyen in the main event of ONE: Reign of Kings to win the ONE Championship Interim Bantamweight World Champion. And while it was Belingon who did the work inside the cage, the win wasn’t just his, rather it was all of the Philippines’ and of course, Team Lakay's. As former ONE Lightweight World Champion Eduard Folayang explained, Belingon’s win was the result of team effort. “Masayang-masaya ako kasi na-predict ko na yan noon pa eh, talagang mananalo si Kevin,” Folayang said during the post-fight press conference. “Of course, because you can see that we worked very hard and of course, smart on our preparation, talagang we helped each other.” Nguyen is, of course, a familiar opponent for Team Lakay, with Folayang having faced the Viet-Aussie star back in 2017. “Kung ano yung pwede naming ibigay na advice or time na maibibigay sa kasama namin, preparing for a fight, we give it.” Folayang continued. With Belingon’s interim title win, he becomes the fourth member of Team Lakay to hold ONE World Championship gold, joining Folayang, former ONE Featherweight World Champion Honorio Banario, and reigning ONE Championship Flyweight World Champion Geje Eustaquio. Add reigning ONE Heavyweight World Champion Brandon Vera to that list, and you have all five world champions representing the Philippines, making it the country with the most world title wins in ONE Championship's seven-year history.  The way Folayang sees it, there’s more on the way. “I think this is one of the memorable moments of our team, because, hindi ko alam, malapit na yata namin kunin lahat [ng championships].” the former lightweight king said playfully. And while what Folayang said was in jest, it isn’t wrong by any means. Friday night’s ONE card had two other winnner from the famed Benguet-based MMA stable, as Folayang decisioned Russian newcomer Aziz Pahrudinov, while former strawweight title contender Joshua Pacio steamrolled through Thailand’s Pongsiri Mitsatit in just one round. Both Folayang and Pacio are riding winning streaks, and both are inching their way closer to title contention. “If ONE Championship or sir Chatri [Sityodtong] will give me the opportunity to face Yoshitaka Naito, why not.” Pacio said at the presser. Should it push through, it would be Pacio’s second go-around with Naito after losing to the reigning ONE Strawweight World Champion back in 2016. If everything goes according to plan for Team Lakay, they could have two, even three more world championships coming back home to La Trinidad pretty soon......»»

ONE: At 51 years old, martial arts legend Renzo Gracie believes he s at his best

Martial arts legend Renzo Gracie is set to make his return to MMA on Friday at the Mall of Asia Arena when he takes on fellow veteran Yuki Kondo at ONE Championship: Reign of Kings. At 51 years old, many would argue that Gracie is way past his prime, but the sixth-degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt believes that age is really just what you make of it. “The funny thing is, if you believe you are old at 30, or if you believe that you are very young at 30, both ways, you are right. So you are what you believe.” Gracie said during the Reign of Kings Press Launch, Tuesday afternoon at the City of Dreams Grand Ballroom. Eight years removed from his last professional MMA bout, Gracie believes that he’s even in better shape now than he was during his supposed peak years. “I believe that I’m better now than I was when I was 25.” Gracie then shared an interesting outlook on being considered as ‘over the hill’ so to say. “Most people say, ‘You know, you’re getting over the hill,’ What they don’t understand is that climbing the hill is the tough part. You have no view, you’re just pushing yourself up. When you get to what they call ‘over the hill’, that’s where you pick up the speed, and the view, it’s wonderful.” Truth be told, Gracie didn’t need to come back. It’s not as if he needed to fight. For the MMA legend, it’s about loving the fight, and wanting to be part of something as big as ONE Championship. “I’m at the best time of my life, I have everything, I didn’t need to be here, but how could I miss the opportunity to be part of something as great as this amazing sport? I had to embrace this, I had to push myself, I had to be in shape. “ “I honestly believe that I’m in my best right now. Mentally, the way that I prepared was very smart, I was completely injury-free, I’m feeling like a check for a million dollars that didn’t bounce.” Gracie added.   Renzo Gracie takes on Yuki Kondo in a legend-versus-legend fight at ONE Championship: Reign of Kings on Friday, July 27th at 8:30 PM on ABS-CBN S+A channel 23! .....»»
