UAAP: Sotto, Ateneo drop 44 points in first quarter to destroy UPIS

STANDINGS NU 9-1 Ateneo 8-3 FEU-Diliman 8-3 Adamson 7-4 UST 5-6 DLSZ 4-6 UE 1-10 UPIS 1-10 Ateneo de Manila High School has flown higher even as other playoff hopefuls Far Eastern University-Diliman and Adamson High School have bounced back in the UAAP 81 Juniors Basketball Tournament. The Blue Eaglets got it going from the get-go and buried the University of the Philippines Integrated School in a 44-point first quarter hole it could never get out of in a 115-68 domination on Wednesday at the Filoil Flying V Centre. Of course, Kai Sotto towered over the competition with 18 points, 11 rebounds, and five assists while frontcourt partner Geo Chiu had his own 16-marker, 11-board double-double. The backcourt also did damage with Forthsky Padrigao collecting 17points, 10 rebounds, seven assists, and two steals. With everybody clicking, the defending champions scored 11 unanswered points to begin the game before going on to total 44 points in the first quarter. In the same timeframe, the Junior Maroons would only be able to muster 15 points. From that point, the Ateneo lead would only grow as big as 51 en route to a third win in a row and eighth overall in 11 games. “I think we’re growing up already. Batang team ‘to and now, they got experience and hopefully, we can peak at the right time,” a beaming head coach Reggie Varilla said post-game. The Blue Eaglets took care of business just as the Baby Tamaraws levelled with them in the standings following a 99-82 rout of University of the East. Xyrus Torres and Bryan Sajonia were on fire for the green and yellow with 24 and 22 points, respectively, while RJ Abarrientos chipped in 13 markers and seven rebounds. Coming off their worst loss in the season, FEU-Diliman is now just one win away from clinching a playoff berth – just like the defending champions. Also getting a mighty rebound from their worst loss in the season are the Baby Falcons who weathered the storm brought about by University of Sto. Tomas, 69-67. Joem Sabandal turned in his most complete game with 23 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, and four steals while big men Lorenz Capulong and AP Manlapaz combined for 19 markers and 10 boards. Adamson only scored eight points in the final frame, but the cushion it had from a 28-point third period proved to be more than enough for them to rise to 7-4. This was an important win for them as a loss would have tied them in the standings with the Tiger Cubs. For UST, Mark Nonoy stuffed the stat sheet anew with 27 points, seven rebounds, seven steals, and four assists while Bismarck Lina posted a 13-marker, 12-board double-double. With their rally falling short, however, they fall to 5-5 in the standings. UAAP: FEU a thorn on the side of Ateneo anew with big-time win

In the span of three days, Far Eastern University has taken down the top two teams in the UAAP 81 Men’s Basketball Tournament. Drawing contributions from up and down the roster, the Tamaraws stopped erstwhile streaking Ateneo de Manila University dead in its tracks via a convincing 63-60 victory on Wednesday at the MOA Arena. The Blue Eagles were in complete command in the first half only to see FEU go on a 17-7 stampede to tie the tally entering the final frame. “We had a bad start. Against Ateneo, hindi pwede yun kaya hindi nga namin alam kung paano namin nagawa ‘to,” head coach Olsen Racela told reporters post-game. There, the two teams were still going at it and Angelo Kouame pulled the defending champions to just 60-63 with 21.2 ticks to go on the clock. After a defensive stop at the other end, they even had a shot to tie the game. Adrian Wong was not able to find an open man, however, and was forced to put up a contester triple that missed the mark. Not long after, the Tamaraws were celebrating their second straight triumph over a title contender. Just last Sunday, they gave Adamson University its first taste of defeat. Hubert Cani was the only player in double-digits with 12 points to go along with six assists and five rebounds. He definitely wasn’t alone, however, as five players also contributed either nine or eight points. “I just want to give credit to our players. Sinunod nila yung game plan,” coach Olsen said. With top gun Arvin Tolentino serving a one-game suspension, veteran Richard Escoto and youngster Brandrey Bienes stepped up big-time by merging for 12 points and eight rebounds. With the win, FEU now stands in joint second in the standings at the end of the first round with also 5-2 Ateneo. Last season, FEU took Ateneo to the limit when the two teams met in the semifinals. The Blue Eagles also had only one player in double-digit scoring in Angelo Kouame who posted a 16-point, 12-rebound double-double to go along with four blocks. Thirdy Ravena struggled with just eight points, four assists, and two steals before fouling out with three minutes remaining. Cojuangco, Vargas battle anew for POC presidency

The battle for the Philippine Olympic Committee presidency continues after incumbent leader Jose “Peping” Cojuangco Jr. and Ricky Vargas of Association of Boxing Alliance of the Philippines filed their certificates of candidacy Wednesday. Both parties submitted their certificates of candidacy at the POC office inside the Philsports Complex in Pasig City where an election committee headed by Frank Elizalde will review their eligibility to run in the scheduled election on Friday. Cycling federation president and Tagaytay City representative Abraham ‘Bambol’ Tolentino and table tennis head Ting Ledesma also filed their COCs. The 82-year-old former Tarlac representative Cojuangco won his fourth term as president unopposed during the November 2016 POC election after Vargas was disqualified to run after allegedly failing to meet the qualifications of being active members of the POC general assembly. Tolentino, who ran as POC chairman during the poll two years ago, was also disqualified for the same reason. Vargas, whose attempt for a temporary restraining order on the 2016 poll was denied by the Pasig Regional Trial Court, won an election case his camp filed on the same court December last year.   According to the court decision, the ‘elections of POC last Nov. 25, 2016 for Chairman and President is null and void” and ordered a reelection. An extraordinary POC general assembly was called Monday regarding the election with Vargas again fearing disqualification.   The election will be held 12:00 noon at Wack Wack Golf and Country Club......»»

Coach Egay happy that Stags wanna be like Mike (Calisaan)

Head coach Egay Macaraya has long stated that San Sebastian College-Recoletos should aspire to be a lot like Michael Calisaan. Of course, it’s pretty much a tall task to put up their main man’s per game counts of 16.4 points in 42.7 percent shooting on top of 8.7 rebounds. What Macaraya wants to see from all the other Golden Stags, however, is the non-stop effort Calisaan gives game in and game out. “Ang gusto ko magbago sa team na yung buong team, maging Michael Calisaan. Sa nakikita ko, Michael is just doing his job,” he said. He then continued, “Harworker siya and he goes hard all the time.” This, even though there are people who believe he needs to do away with one aspect of his game. After Baste’s loss to San Beda College two months ago, the latter’s head coach Boyet Fernandez reminded the former’s fourth-year forward that he needs to play “physical lang, wag dirty.” Then, the Red Lions’ mentor said that Calisaan played with much extra-curricular activity. Defending his prized ward, Macaraya said that Calisaan is not a “dirty player” and is “just a victim” of questionable calls. After that time of heightened tension, the two teams turned their attention to different things. Now they are all set to collide in a do-or-die game for the remaining Finals berth, however, Calisaan, Macaraya, and the San Sebastian will cross paths anew with Fernandez and San Beda. Again, the Golden Stags’ mentor made it clear that their main man plays the game right. “Para sa akin, that issue is closed already kasi ‘di na naman nag-respond si Boyet,” he said, referring to their exchange of words. He then continued, “He should also understand kasi player din siya e. he should know about hard work and (being) a fighter.” Macaraya was talking about how Fernandez was once a scrappy point guard back when he was playing in the PBA – much like how Calisaan is now a scrappy forward in the NCAA. “It’s not about dirty. Sometimes, (things happen) because that’s part of basketball, when Michael was hit ng elbow (during a previous game), anong sinabi ko kay Michael,” he shared. He then continued, “Sabi ko sa kanya, ‘Tanggapin mo yan. Wag kang masira.’” The Baste head coach then went on to say how his team leader only heeded his advice. Now, Calisaan and his team are one win away from an unlikely trip to the Finals. “Para sa akin po, maglalaro lang po ako. Kung ano po yung masasabi nila sa akin, tatanggapin ko naman po,” he shared. He then continued, “Kung mali po sa kanila, wala akong magagawa, pero para sa akin po, ginagawa ko lang yung trabaho ko.” Indeed, that non-stop effort is what Macaraya wants to see – and is already seeing, actually – from all his boys. “I guess, all my players right now, sinasabi ko nang they have changed their attitude. Everybody is like Michael Calisaan na,” he expressed. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»
