Title defense opens up as Chelsea ends City s unbeaten start

By Rob Harris, Associated Press LONDON (AP) — For 45 minutes Chelsea was under siege, pinned back in its own half by Manchester City. With halftime approaching, Chelsea finally managed a shot from an unlikely source and broke through the impervious champions. Just when he seemed to be struggling to adapt to a more advanced attacking midfield role, N'Golo Kante got into space in front of goal to be set up by Eden Hazard and sweep the ball into the net. So wasteful in the first half, City then allowed Chelsea to seize the initiative as its unbeaten start to the Premier League title defense came to an end. "Everyone wants to beat us," City manager Pep Guardiola said. David Luiz made sure of that, heading in from Hazard's corner in the 78th minute to seal Chelsea's 2-0 win on Saturday. "It was a great game and we have to be honest playing against the best team in Europe or the world at the moment," Luiz said. "They have great players, so we had a lot of humility and tried to take our chances to score, so we did our plan well." Not only did City lose for the first time in the league this season but it also lost top spot to Liverpool, which moved a point ahead after Mohamed Salah's hat trick inspired a 4-0 victory at Bournemouth. Chelsea still has a lot of work to do to move back into contention. Having lost two of its last three league games before the visit of City, Maurizio Sarri's fourth-placed side is eight points behind Liverpool. Tottenham remained two points ahead of Chelsea in third place but only six points from top spot after winning 2-0 at Leicester. UNITED REBOUNDS The visit of last-placed Fulham allowed Manchester United to end a four-match winless run as Jose Mourinho's side claimed a 4-1 victory. Ashley Young struck into the top corner to put United ahead in the 13th minute, Juan Mata slotted in from Marcus Rashford's cutback in the 28th and Romelu Lukaku ended his 997-minute wait for a goal at Old Trafford in the 42nd. Substitute Aboubakar Kamara's penalty reduced the deficit from the spot but Fulham midfielder Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa's sending off in the 68th was followed by Marcus Rashford netting for United in the 82nd. The title remains far from United's thoughts, with Liverpool 16 points ahead. SALAH TREBLE For the first time this season, Salah scored more than once in a league game. It's a reminder of how the forward won the Golden Boot last season. At Bournemouth, Salah broke the deadlock in the 25th minute when he responded to a parried shot. The Egyptian stayed on his feet under a challenge from Steve Cook before drilling home in style, before netting three minutes into the second half. Cook somehow back-heeled past his own goalkeeper, Asmir Begovic, when trying to clear Andy Robertson's cross. A mazy dribble preceded Salah completing his hat trick in the 77th. GAMBLE PAYS OFF With Tottenham playing at Barcelona in the Champions League on Tuesday, Mauricio Pochettino gave Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen some rest by starting them on the bench at Leicester. It paid off, thanks to the contribution of Son Heung-min. The South Korean struck the opener from long-range on the stroke of halftime and then provided a cross for Dele Alli to head in the second in the 58th minute. ARSENAL ADVANCES Lucas Torreira acrobatically volleyed into the bottom left corner in the 83rd minute as Arsenal beat Huddersfield 1-0 to extend its club-record unbeaten run to 21 matches in all competitions. Arsenal remained fifth, behind Chelsea on goal difference. LOSING START Ralph Hasenhuettl made his presence felt at Southampton with six changes from the side that lost to Tottenham on Wednesday. But it was a familiar losing story for Mark Hughes' successor. Hasenhuettl's first game in charge was spoiled by Callum Paterson pouncing on a poor back pass to score in the 74th minute for Cardiff. WEST HAM FIGHTBACK Crystal Palace has only one win in 11 league games after conceding the lead to lose 3-2 to West Ham in a London derby. Robert Snodgrass, Felipe Anderson and Javier Hernandez scored for West Ham. BURNLEY BOUNCES BACK Burnley registered its first win in nine league matches. Jack Cork hit a shot and the ball went in off James Tarkowski's chest to give Burnley a 1-0 victory over Brighton......»»

LeBron scores 42 as Lakers surge past Spurs late, 121-113

By Greg Beacham, Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) — LeBron James scored 20 of his 42 points in the fourth quarter and Josh Hart hit two clutch three-pointers in the final minutes of the Los Angeles Lakers' fourth straight victory, 121-113 over the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday night (Thursday, PHL time). Kyle Kuzma had 22 points and nine rebounds for the Lakers, who lost Brandon Ingram to a sprained left ankle in the first quarter. Los Angeles still beat the Spurs for the first time in three tries this season, but only after James dramatically took control of another fourth quarter during his third 40-point game since joining the Lakers. DeMar DeRozan scored 32 points and Rudy Gay had a season-high 31 before fouling out for the Spurs in the first of back-to-back games in three days to wrap up the season series between these longtime West rivals. They'll meet again in San Antonio on Friday night (Saturday, PHL time). San Antonio held an eight-point lead in the fourth before James started a rally by scoring nine consecutive points. James hit an extra-long three-pointer moments later, but the Spurs surged back ahead again. Hart hit a tying triple with 3:04 left, followed by a go-ahead three from James on the next possession. Hart and James hit consecutive clutch three-pointers moments later, and James added a layup with 41 seconds left. James scored all 20 of his fourth-quarter points in the final 9.5 minutes, going 7-of-8 from the field with three three-pointers. He also had six assists and five rebounds. LaMarcus Aldridge had 21 points and nine rebounds for the Spurs. Gay poured in 16 points during the third quarter of his highest-scoring performance for the Spurs and a personal best for the injury-plagued scorer since Jan. 5, 2016. But he had just one basket in the final 10.5 minutes before fouling out with 27 seconds left. San Antonio made a 24-10 run out of halftime to take its biggest lead at 69-60, with Gay scoring 16 points in the third quarter and DeRozan adding 12. TIP-INS Spurs: Longtime Lakers big man Pau Gasol didn't get to play against his old team. He is out with a stress fracture in his left foot. Lakers: Ingram had played at least 25 minutes in every game since he returned from a four-game suspension for fighting in Los Angeles' home opener. INGRAM OUT Ingram left midway through the opening quarter after getting hurt while Aldridge committed a flagrant foul against him. The Lakers' third-leading scorer had X-rays that came back negative, but the team decided to rest him for the night. Ingram scored five points before leaving. The former No. 2 overall draft pick has been a key component of the Lakers' starting lineup around James, providing length on the perimeter and improving his drives to the hoop. McDermott, Turner lead Pacers to 121-88 rout of Jazz

By Matthew Coles, Associated Press SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Doug McDermott scored a season-high 21 points and the Indiana Pacers rolled to an easy victory without their leading scorer, beating the Utah Jazz 121-88 on Monday night (Tuesday, PHL time). Victor Oladipo, averaging 21.4 points, missed his fourth game with a sore right knee, so his teammates turned up their defensive intensity and spread the ball. Myles Turner set the tone with 16 points, all in the first three quarters, and seven Pacers reached double figures. Tyreke Evans scored 14 points and Cory Joseph and Domantas Sabonis each had 13. The Pacers shot a season-best 58.3 percent and made half of their 18 three-point attempts. Donovan Mitchell, who scores 20.6 per game, sat out his second game with bruised ribs and Utah was playing a back-to-back, but it was 19 turnovers and poor shooting that buried the Jazz and dropped their usually stellar home record to 2-6. The Jazz repeatedly tried to dribble through the Pacers' tenacious defense or pass over their outstretched hands. Even Utah's traditionally supportive crowd booed at times as Utah's turnovers led to 25 Indiana points. Turner drew Rudy Gobert outside and made his first five shots, mostly on mid-range jumpers off pick-and-pop actions. Turner signed a four-year, $72 million extension in the offseason and the big man from Texas went to work earning it, dropping fat, gaining muscle and improving his shot during the summer. After a four-game stretch where he didn't score more than nine points, Turner has reached double figures in five consecutive games. He missed Friday's (Saturday, PHL time) loss to San Antonio with an ankle injury but was active from the start against Utah. Led by his 11 points in the first half, the Pacers were ahead by as many as 14 before settling for a 58-47 advantage at the break. The Jazz have lost six of eight. TIP-INS Pacers: The Pacers beat the Jazz 121-94 last Monday (Tuesday, PHL time). ... Indiana is 8-0 when making at least half its three-pointers. ... The Pacers had their largest margin of victory this season and their first 30-point-plus win on the road in 22 years. Jazz: Rubio had 23 points on 10-of-13 shooting on Sunday (Monday, PHL time) against Sacramento but just three points on 1-of-6 shooting against the Pacers, typical of his up-and-down season. ... Thabo Sefolosha and Joe Ingles both got technical fouls. ... Utah went 8-for-31 on three's. UP NEXT Pacers: Continue their road trip at Phoenix on Tuesday night (Wednesday, PHL time). Knicks beat Pelicans, win consecutive games for first time

By JEFFREY BERNSTEIN,  Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — Emmanuel Mudiay scored a season-high 27 points, rookie Allonzo Trier had a career-high 25, and the New York Knicks rallied in the fourth quarter to beat the New Orleans Pelicans 114-109 on Friday night (Saturda, PHL time). Trier made two free throws to put the Knicks ahead 104-103, and they held on to win consecutive games for the first time this season. Enes Kanter scored 17 for the Knicks and Noah Vonleh had 14. Anthony Davis finished with 33 points and 12 rebounds for New Orleans. Jrue Holiday scored 22 points and Nikola Mirotic added 19. New York had trailed 101-92 midway through the final quarter. Mudiay's steal and two free throws with 1:09 left gave the Knicks a 106-103 lead. Milotic missed a 3-point attempt and Mudiay hit a driving layup with 34 seconds to play. The Pelicans pulled to 111-109 on Davis' uncontested dunk with 8.2 seconds left, but Mudiay hit another free throw and Tim Hardaway Jr. added two more for the final margin. The Pelicans led by nine in the first quarter, but New York scored the first seven points of the second to take its first lead since the opening basket. The Knicks then increased their advantage to 52-45 on Mudiay's driving layup with 3:15 left. Davis' three-point play with 3.6 seconds remaining gave the Pelicans a 60-59 lead at halftime. He had 24 points and 10 rebounds at the break. New Orleans led 90-87 after the third quarter. TIP-INS Pelicans: New Orleans, which had won the last two meetings, leads the all-time series 19-17. The Pelicans had not lost to the Knicks at Madison Square Garden since November 15, 2015. Knicks: Hardaway missed his first 11 shots before finally connecting on a 3-pointer with 7:10 remaining in the third quarter. He finished the night 2 for 15. FOR STARTERS No Knick player has started every game this season, while the Pelicans have two players, Holiday and E'Twaun Moore, who have been on the floor for the start of each of New Orleans' 19 games. MY OLD KENTUCKY HOME Five players who appeared in the game attended the University of Kentucky. Davis, Julius Randle and Darius Miller competed for New Orleans, while Kanter and Kevin Knox were on the floor for the Knicks. Kanter, who attended Kentucky as a freshman, never played for the Wildcats after being declared ineligible by the NCAA for having received impermissible benefits while playing for the Turkish club team Fenerbahce. HAPPY HOLIDAY Holiday, who has reached double figures in all but one game this season, is averaging a career-high 20.1 ppg. Now in his sixth year with the Pelicans, the 10-year veteran averaged 19 last season. UP NEXT Pelicans: Visit Washington on Saturday. Knicks: Visit Memphis on Sunday......»»

Lyles scores season-high 22 as Nuggets beat Magic, 112-87

By MICHAEL KELLY,  Associated Press DENVER (AP) — Trey Lyles scored a season-high 22 points, Mason Plumlee had 15 points and 11 rebounds, and the Denver Nuggets beat the Orlando Magic 112-87 on Friday night (Saturday, PHL time). Nikola Jokic finished with 11 assists and 10 rebounds but fell four points shy of a triple-double. It was the third time this season Jokic missed out on a triple-double because he failed to score 10 or more points. Jokic assisted on Denver's first four baskets of the game and nearly had a double-double at halftime. He only took seven shots and missed all three of his 3-point attempts. The Nuggets didn't need him to win their second in a row at home. Lyles and Plumlee provided enough offense off the bench. Lyles finished four points shy of his career best. Terence Ross led Orlando with 18 points and hit his first seven shots. His first miss came with 7:48 left and Denver comfortably ahead. The Nuggets led by 11 early in the fourth quarter before pulling away for an easy win. Plumlee scored four straight points, Lyles hit a layup and a three-point play and Jamal Murray, who had 16 points, drained a 3-pointer from the top during a 17-2 run that gave Denver a 27-point lead. TIP-INS Magic: Nikola Vucevic had 16 points. ... Former Denver center Timofey Mozgov (sore right knee) has not played this season and coach Steve Clifford said he is "a ways away" from returning. ... James dunk lifts Lakers to 107-106 win over Hawks

By Beth Harris, Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) — LeBron James scored 26 points and dunked for the winning basket in the final seconds, lifting the Los Angeles Lakers to a 107-106 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday night (Monday, PHL time). Kyle Kuzma added 18 points for the Lakers' fifth win in six games. Kuzma's layup tied the game at 104-all with 1:34 to go. Kent Bazemore was called for a technical at the end of that play and Kuzma made the free throw for a 105-104 lead. Vince Carter dunked to put the Hawks back up 106-105. James got fouled at the other end and missed both. But the Lakers got the offensive rebound and Kuzma charged into the paint amid three defenders for a shot from the left side. It missed. James was waiting on the right, dunking for a 107-106 lead. LBJ powers it home to give LAL the lead late! #LakeShow pic.twitter.com/gBSwV1jBIy — NBA (@NBA) November 12, 2018 Taurean Prince led the Hawks with 23 points, Bazemore added 21 and Trae Young had 20 for Atlanta, which still has just one road win on the season. Alex Len's dunk started a 7-0 run that put Atlanta ahead 102-98 in the fourth. James' basket drew the Lakers within one, but then he missed two long jumpers on the same possession. The Hawks trailed by nine to start the fourth. Their first three baskets in the fourth came on three-pointers by Prince (two) and Young (one). The Lakers dominated the third, outscoring Atlanta 32-22 to take an 84-75 lead into the fourth. But Atlanta kept coming, hitting three consecutive three-pointers to start the fourth when James was on the bench for the Lakers. Len's dunk gave the Hawks a 99-98 lead, just the second time they led in the second half. James' dunk that tied the game midway through the second quarter got started with Rajon Rondo. He tossed up an alley-oop pass that Brandon Ingram batted back as he ran out of bounds to a trailing James, who provided the thunderous finish. The Hawks raced to a 9-0 lead to start the game, their largest lead of the night. The Lakers missed their first three shots and Ingram committed two turnovers. TIP-INS Hawks: They haven't beaten the Lakers at Staples Center since March 4, 2016. ... Prince was called for a flagrant-1 foul on James in the first quarter. ... Pacers finish with a flourish, run past Heat 110-102

By TIM REYNOLDS,  AP Basketball Writer MIAMI (AP) — Victor Oladipo had 22 points and 10 assists, Bojan Bogdanovic put Indiana ahead to stay on a 3-pointer with just under a minute remaining and the Pacers beat the Miami Heat 110-102 on Friday night (Saturday, PHL time). Domantas Sabonis and Darren Collison each scored 17 points, and Bogdanovic had 16 to help the Pacers snap a two-game slide. Sabonis finished with 11 rebounds, and the Pacers outscored Miami 16-2 in the final 3:31. Kelly Olynyk led the Heat with 20 points, but missed most of the fourth quarter with an injury. Josh Richardson scored 18, Tyler Johnson had 15 and Hassan Whiteside ended up with 11 points and 20 rebounds for Miami. The Heat were again without Dwyane Wade, who's excused while he and wife Gabrielle Union-Wade continue celebrating the birth earlier this week of their daughter. Heat coach Erik Spoelstra is calling Wade's absence day-to-day, though said the team will give him as much time as he wants and needs. Olynyk left early in the fourth holding his midsection. Olynyk was kneed by Indiana's Tyreke Evans around the ribs, and remained down for a couple minutes before going to the locker room. It was part of a rough night for Olynyk — he took an elbow in the face from Indiana's Thaddeus Young late in the first half. Young was ejected for the Flagrant-2 foul. Evans was called for an offensive foul on the play that knocked Olynyk from the game for most of the fourth; he returned in the final seconds. Miami led by 11 early and held a six-point lead with 3:50 left, then went cold — shooting 1 for 8 with four turnovers the rest of the way. Bogdanovic's 3-pointer from the top of the key was the 12th and final lead change of the night, and capped the Pacers' rally from what had been as much as an 11-point deficit. Miami debuted its "Vice" court and uniforms, the black, fuchsia and light blue color scheme designed as nod to the city in the 1980s and the team's original home — Miami Arena. TIP-INS Pacers: Indiana is 8-0 when scoring 102 or more points; 0-5 when scoring 101 or less. ... Oladipo, who tweaked a knee Wednesday in a home loss to Philadelphia, shot 9 for 22. ... The Pacers turned 24 Heat turnovers into 29 points. Heat: Whiteside is the second player in Heat history with two straight 20-rebound games. Rony Seikaly is the other, and he pulled the feat off four times. ... Miami was without Goran Dragic (right knee inflammation), who may try to play Saturday. ... Miami's first field-goal attempt came 3:37 into the game — its first six possessions ended in either turnovers or trips to the foul line. FOUL The teams were awful from the line: Miami was 16 for 27, slightly outpacing Indiana's 17 for 29 effort. It was a strange shooting night all around for the Heat; they shot 59 percent from the foul line, 52 percent (14-27) from 3-point range and 42 percent (22-53) from 2-point land. RARITY The game started the 20th home-home back-to-back in Heat history, and only the second since the lockout-shortened 2011-12 season. In the previous 19, the Heat went 2-0 six times, 0-2 four times, and 1-1 in the other nine instances. QUIRKY The teams play again next Friday in Indianapolis. Miami has three games before then; Indiana has only one. UP NEXT Pacers: Visit Houston on Sunday. Heat: Host Washington on Saturday......»»

Paul, Anthony help Rockets top Nets 119-111, end 4-game skid

By BRIAN MAHONEY,  AP Basketball Writer NEW YORK (AP) — Chris Paul had 32 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds, Carmelo Anthony added a season-high 28 points and the Houston Rockets snapped a four-game losing streak with a 119-111 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on Friday night. Clint Capela finished with 22 points and 13 rebounds, and Eric Gordon contributed 21 points for the Rockets, who had stumbled to a 1-5 start a season after winning 65 games and falling a game short of the NBA Finals. They snapped out of their slump thanks to one of the best games as a Rocket for Paul, who had season bests in points and assists in the final game before his workload should ease Saturday with the expected return of James Harden. The league MVP missed his third straight game with a strained left hamstring and coach Mike D'Antoni said he would probably return for the second half of a back-to-back in Chicago. Anthony bounced back from a 2-for-12, eight-point performance against Portland by coming off the bench to hit six 3-pointers. Caris LeVert scored 29 points for the Nets, who got off to a sizzling start before the Rockets turned around the game. One of the NBA's most potent offenses had been held below 90 points in two of the previous three games after doing so only three times all last season. The offense was back Friday, but the defense took a while to get going. Brooklyn made 14 of its first 18 shots, including 13 of 14 inside the 3-point arc while simply driving by defenders. The Nets finished 15 of 21 in the opening quarter, taking a 32-25 lead. Paul kept the Rockets close with 13 points in the second, including a deep 3-pointer that cut it to 61-56 at halftime The Rockets then surged ahead with an 11-0 run in the third, with Anthony making two 3-pointers, a jumper and blocking a shot as Houston went ahead 76-69. Anthony hit two more 3s in the fourth. TIP-INS Rockets: Houston avoided matching its longest skid of last season. The Rockets dropped five in a row from Dec. 20-29. ... Paul's highest-scoring game with the Rockets is 37 points last Jan. 10 against Portland. Nets: Coach Kenny Atkinson said there was no decision yet if rookies Rodions Kurucs and Dzanan Musa would play for Long Island on Saturday in its season opener. Both players worked out with the G League affiliate this week. ... The Nets scored 26 of their 32 first-quarter points in the paint, marking their most points in the paint in a quarter since having 26 in the first on Dec. 7, 2016, against Denver. HARDEN'S HOPES Harden has worked out without discomfort and D'Antoni said he likely would have returned Friday if the Rockets had been off following the game. But because they were playing on two straight nights and he wouldn't use Harden on both of them after returning from injury, D'Antoni is opting to wait the extra day and bring Harden back Saturday at Chicago. The league MVP was hurt near the end of a loss to Utah on Oct. 24 and Houston had been routed in both games since. ALL FOULED UP D'Antoni said before the game there was no explanation for Houston's offensive troubles, saying the Rockets were getting the same shots as last season, just shooting them 20 percent worse. "Foul shots not going in. You don't change up a foul shot. We're not even making those," D'Antoni said. "So we've obviously got some kind of malaise over us that we've got to shrug off and get going." The Rockets entered shooting 70.2 percent at the line, 27th in the NBA, after finishing ninth last season at 78.1 percent. UP NEXT Rockets: Visit Chicago on Saturday. Nets: Host Philadelphia on Sunday......»»

Leicester to return to action this weekend after death of owner

By Steve Douglas, Associated Press Leicester's grieving players will take to the field for the first time since the death of the club's owner in a helicopter crash when they visit Cardiff for a Premier League game on Saturday. The two teams said Tuesday the match will go ahead as planned in the Welsh capital, with a minute's silence before kickoff and players wearing black armbands as a mark of respect for Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha and four other people who were killed in the tragedy. Leicester's players have been visibly affected by the incident and have spent Monday and Tuesday attending commemorative events to pay tribute to Vichai, the club's popular Thai owner whose helicopter spiraled out of control as it left the King Power Stadium following a Premier League game against West Ham on Saturday. "We will be offering our support to Leicester City in any way necessary in respect of this weekend's fixture," Cardiff chief executive Ken Choo said. Leicester's English League Cup match against Southampton, scheduled for Tuesday, had been canceled, while games involving the club's women's team were also called off in wake of the crash. Leicester opened a book of condolence inside a specially erected marquee in memory of Vichai on Tuesday, as more supporters and people from the wider community arrived at the stadium to pay their respects.
