Inflation hits 5.2%, exceeds gov’t target

Inflation picked up faster than expected to 5.2 percent year-on-year in June, the highest in more than five years, due to costlier food and "sin" products, the government reported on Thursday.   The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) vowed to get the inflation rate back to its 2-4 percent target range amid increasing pressure for more interest rate hikes than the two made this year.   The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported that June's faster inflation was "primarily brought about by higher annual rate posted in the heavily weighted food and nonalcoholic beverages index at 6.1 percent."   June's consumer price index was above the 4...Keep on reading: Inflation hits 5.2%, exceeds gov’t target.....»»

FDA warns of toxic skin whiteners

How far would you go to achieve a fair and radiant skin? It appears thousands of Filipinos are willing to take potential health risks on banned beauty products simply because they offer celebrity-like glowing skin and are cheap at that. Take, for instance, skin-whitening and beauty product Goree, which remains popular among Filipino consumers despite findings that it contains high levels of mercury, thanks or no thanks to its affordable price of P150 and hyped efficacy on social media. Notwithstanding warnings from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) against the use of Goree, Ruvilma Entero, who is working overseas, and her friends continued to patronize the product. BSP: Cheaper fuel to temper June inflation

The inflation rate in June may have risen at a faster pace than the previous month's record high of at least five years due to continued increases in the prices of basic commodities, especially rice, central bank economists said.   In a statement, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas' department of economic research said it was expecting the country's inflation rate to rise to as high 5.1 percent this month, but may also come in as low as 4.3 percent, based on the 2012 price base.   The unit---whose output guides the BSP's Monetary Board in setting interest rate policy---said price hikes in basic goods were mitigated by reductions in prices in other sectors.   ...Keep on reading: BSP: Cheaper fuel to temper June inflation.....»»

Gov’t call for intensified price monitoring only an ’empty gimmickry’ — Gabriela

After the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and Department of Agriculture's (DA) announcement to intensify price monitoring among retailers, Gabriela Women's Party accused the government of attempting "to make an impression that it is doing something" amid price hikes. "The truth is, the Duterte regime only wants to make an impression that it is doing something on rising prices amid mounting complaints by mothers and consumers when what it is really doing is to just watch prices soar," Gabriela Representative Emmi de Jesus said on Wednesday in a statement.
