PBA: Phoenix still hoping to rise again come quarterfinals

Phoenix may very well be on the outside looking in when the next round of the 2019 PBA Commissioner's Cup rolls along. Dealt a lopsided loss by San Miguel on Wednesday, the Fuel Masters dropped to 4-6 in the standings - hanging on for dear life as the elimination round comes to a close. "Wala naman tayong magagawa. Talagang talo kami kanina," head coach Louie Alas told reporters following their 20-point defeat. "These negativities, we'll just have to turn them into positives by Friday kasi pwede pa rin naman kaming mag-number eight and pwedeng ma-upset namin yung number one. Yun ang importante - pumasok muna kami sa quarterfinals." Two days from now, coach Louie and his wards take the floor once more opposite NLEX. That is a must-win game if they are to have a shot at the next round. Unfortunately for Phoenix, reinforcement Richard Howell incurred an injury in the second quarter and still needs to undergo tests. "Medyo nag-shake daw yung knee niya, pero kanina naman, binigyan ng test ng (physical therapist) namin and positive namin. Kailangan lang ng peace of mind ba so x-ray mamaya then basa tomorrow," their mentor shared. He then continued, "We have to take care of business sa NLEX so hopefully, makalaro siya." This, while they are already dealing with the absence of mercurial, but impactful Calvin Abueva. Whatever happens, coach Louie said the Fuel Masters remain upbeat. "With or without (Howell), pwede pa naman. Ang hinahabol na lang naman namin is makapasok talaga," he said......»»

Cayetano clears issue on SEA Games uniforms

Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (PHISGOC) Foundation, Inc. chairman Alan Peter Cayetano cleared the issue thrown at them regarding the alleged overpriced quotations of Team Philippines’ uniforms. Talking to the media on Thursday, Cayetano explained their side on the issue, denying the allegations made by the majority of the Philippine Olympic Committee Board that Team PHI's uniforms are “unreasonably” higher than the suggested retail prices in the company’s flagship store. PHISGOC Foundation tapped Asics as the official outfitter of Team PHI.        This and the legitimacy of PHISGOC Foundation as organizer of the biennial meet are some of the issues that the committee is facing just months before the scheduled staging of the Games in November. “Noong nakipag-usap sila sa ASICS they are willing to sponsor all the uniforms for 400, wala tayong ilalabas na pera dun, lahat yun. And ang uniform Olympic quality,” Cayetano cleared. Cayetano said that Asics, in their initial talks, agreed to sponsor all the uniforms in 400 events but a bargaining with the SEA Games Federation in the number of sports and events increased the number of sports to 56 and the events at 529 events.    “So paano yung 129 events, yung uniform nun? So unfair naman sa ASICS na ‘Oh sandali lang baguhin natin ang deal. Pumayag na kayo sa 400, pumayag naman kayo sa 529 kundi no deal,’” said Cayetano. “Kung nag-no deal then we have to pay for the uniforms for the 400 events.” As a compromise, Cayetano added that Asics asked them if they want they can pay for the uniforms of the remaining 129 events.   “Napasa ‘yan sa PSC (Philippine Sports Commission) because hindi pa napasa ang budget ng PHISGOC and PSC said dadaan sa procurement nila. So lahat ito ay proposals, pero ang procurement body ang magsasabi kung pwede o hindi,” he said. Cayetano denied the allegations that the uniforms are ‘overpriced’. The POC Board alleged that the PHISGOC Foundation request to PSC shows that a set of competition uniforms costs P51,5111 while the company’s quotation for the same item during the 18th Asian Games last year was only P25,000. “Ang problema instead of bringing it up with the board and mag-usap, naghanap ng outlet, kinompare yung presyo. Eh iba naman siguro po ang nasa outlet, sa retail and yung sa Olympic number,” said Cayetano. “But as I said we can discuss it.” “Imagine yung 129 is 1/5, yung 400 libre so para wala na lang issue, sabihin na lang natin sa Asics iba na lang, we’ll pay for all 529? Yung mga nagko-comment ng ayaw nun, saan kukunin ang pera? They’re not willing to sponsor it. They want us to use government money for it,” added Cayetano. The PHISGOC Foundation head said that they can raise these issues at a proper venue or through an audience with them, not through press releases and separate interviews. “They should also understand that they can criticize but we also have to deliver,” he said. “If they’re criticisms are valid then we have to reform.”   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

PBA FINALS: Will Terrence actually call it quits if Beermen win title?

Could Terrence Romeo really end up with just one PBA title and then call it quits? You never know. Terrence Romeo is just preparing for his very first PBA Finals as San Miguel Beer takes on Magnolia for the 2019 Philipine Cup title. However, if and when the Beermen complete a 5-peat in the All-Filipino, Romeo could end up retiring from basketball for good. “Excited. Pero syempre hindi ko naman pwedeng isipin lang yun palagi eh. Syempre kailangan pa rin namin maglaro ng yun nga, game, kumbaga best-of-7. So hindi pupwedeng champion na kaagad,” Romeo said on his first-ever PBA Finals. “Kumbaga, one game at a time tapos kung makukuha namin yun, kahit papano nakuha ko na yung pinakakulang para sakin. I mean, kulang na award para sa sarili ko. Tapos yun, baka magretire na ko after,” he added. Talks of a possible retirement for Romeo are coming out of the blue just now. But if Terrence ends up fulfilling his ultimate dream, he might just actually call it quits. Romeo has exactly zero championships in his basketball career dating back to high school. He’s been in the PBA since 2013 and this upcoming Finals is his first true shot at a championship. “Pag-iisipan ko pa, pag-iisipan ko pa [retirement]. Kasi yun lang talaga yung pinaka-dream ko eh, mag-champion sa PBA kasi wala nga akong championship simula college days ko, high school days. Tapos nagcha-champion ako kumbaga sa barangay lang. So ayun, yun lang,” Romeo said. “Hindi kasi madalas ko binibiro yung family ko na pag nag-champion ako sa PBA, gusto ko na mag-retire, sabi ko. Eh yun, baka gusto yata maaga ako mag-retire eh para ano.. ay, maaga ako mag-champion para maaga ako mag-retire,” he added. All this talk of retirement comes with San Miguel actually winning the All-Filipino title this year. If the Beermen complete history with a fifth straight championship, then maybe Terrence can talk think about retirement again. Or maybe not. “Hindi pa. Pag-iisipan pa lang, pag-iisipan pa lang. Pag-iisipan ko pa lang,” Romeo said. “Pag nag-retire naman pwede naman bumalik ulit eh, diba? Or hindi na?” he added.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

Valdez still recovering from foot injury ahead of Japan training camp

Creamline star Alyssa Valdez will join the national team in its Japan training starting Sunday but will be limited to light workout sessions pending her full recovery from a right foot injury. Valdez was finally allowed to remove her walking boot that she wore for almost a week.    “Fortunately and luckily, pinayagan na ako ni doc na walang boot, so I think all I have to do is to do therapy before really going to the game,” said Valdez on Wednesday. “Kasi siyempre, na-isolate talaga 'yung paa ko, wala talaga siyang, na-shut down siya kumbaga para ready lang din talaga ako.” Valdez missed the Cool Smashers second straight match. She was in uniform but sat out Creamline’s 25-15, 25-18, 25-22, drubbing of PacificTown Army in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Open Conference. “But okay naman siya at therapy lang advice ni doc for the next five days tapos after nun, I'm ready to join the drills and the trainings naman of the teams,” cleared Valdez, who was given the greenlight to remove the boot Wednesday morning. The multiple-time Philippine team member, however, assured that she will be with the squad when the Nationals fly to Tokyo for a 12-day training camp as part of their preparation for the 30th Southeast Asian Games which the country will host next month. But her workout will still depend on her condition and recovery. “I think makakasabay naman na ako pero hindi ko lang alam kung 'yung intensity ba, kasi out talaga for halos more than a month,” she said. “So, hindi ko pa alam kung nasaang percentage na 'yung recovery ko by that time.” The three-time PVL Most Valuable Player actually hurt her foot during practice a month ago that prevented her from joining the national squad in its Thailand training camp and the first leg of the ASEAN Grand Prix in Nakhon Ratchasima. Valdez was able to play in the second leg two weeks ago in Sta. Rosa, Laguna but her injury recurred and needed further evaluation and therapy. She was advised to wear a walking boot for precautionary measure. Valdez is just hoping for fast recovery to be able to train fully with the Nationals. “Hopefully lang, maka-recover and makasabay din talaga ako sa training, 'yun talaga wini-wish ko, makasabay din ako sa training nila,” she said.     --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles  .....»»

PBA: Northport hits two birds with one stone vs. Phoenix

Northport hit two birds with one stone Saturday in the 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup. Phoenix is the only team the Batang Pier have not beaten since last season, being 0-5 against the Fuel Masters. But with an 80-70 win at the Big Dome, Northport finally snapped that losing skid. It’s even better because the Batang Pier likewise ended a four-game slide in the Governors’ Cup, improving to 2-4 in the team standings. “Seriously speaking, law of averages lang. 0-5 kami dyan sa Phoenix, di pa kami nanalo since last season,” head coach Pido Jarencio said. “It’s about time na manalo naman tayo,” he added. With another long losing skid this conference, the Phoenix game was practically a must-win for Northport. They got the job done and now the Batang Pier have life again. “This win is for the management and the players. They deserve this. Medyo bugbog na. Kapag sunod-sunod na talo, minsan kapag practice wala nang pumapasok sa mga utak nila eh,” Jarencio said. “At least nagkaroon ng konting blessing satin. Blessing naman yan lahat. Maganda yung galawan, maganda yung laro, maganda yung depensa. Sana magtuloy-tuloy na lang,” he added.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

Volleyball community unites for Jovelyn Gonzaga’s nephew

National team hitter Jovelyn Gonzaga was thankful for the overwhelming support from fellow volleyball players and volleyball fans for her nephew who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. The local volleyball community united to extend financial help for Gonzaga’s three-year old nephew Calix Vander or CV.      “Sobrang overwhelming ng volleyball community,” said the opposite hitter on Thursday during the welcome dinner for the ASEAN Grand Prix second leg in Crimson Hotel in Alabang. “Ang dami nga nagme-message na ganito lang ang maitutulong ko. Walang konting tulong, pag pinagsama-sama ‘yun napakalaking bagay. And prayers, sabi ko prayers niyo napakalaking bagay na ‘yun para sa pamangkin ko.” Hi VB Community! We are organizing another jersey auction for ate @JOVZKIE08 and her nephew, Calix Vander, who's been recently diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. This auction will be participated in by both PSL and PVL players. Hope we can all support this cause. ????????? pic.twitter.com/eE8eyOAeKW — Carmela Tunay (@carmelaloo08) October 3, 2019 Gonzaga said that CV had undergone numerous check-ups the past month and was hospitalized for two weeks before the doctors found out that it was leukemia. “Almost more than a month na ‘yung check-ups niya tapos na-hospital na rin siya for more than two weeks, muntik na nga akong hindi sumama ng Thailand (ASEAN Grand Prix first leg) kasi gusto ko siyang tutukan pero hindi pwede kasi may commitment ako kata tuluy-tuloy ang monitor ko sa kanya,” said Gonzaga. “At that time ang dami niyang test eh,” continued the enlisted Army personnel. “Kasi unang finding sa kanya, may namuong bukol sa heart niya pero doon na na-find out na may problema siya sa dugo. So ang daming test, bone marrow test, biopsy and all. Hanggang sa nalaman na may leukemia.” It was her friends Carmela Tunay of Petron and Cignal teammate Rachel Anne Daquis who started a fund-raising campaign for CV.    “Thankful ako kasi that time mga two weeks pa lang na-admit si CV, nag-message na si Mela sa akin,” said Gonzaga. “Sobrang blessing ni Mela at ni ate Rachel Daquis.” “Actually sila talaga ‘yung nagri-reach out sa akin na, ‘ate, if ever gusto mong magpa-auction’ kasi dati nagpa-acution na rin siya para kay Ian Larriba,” Gonzaga added. “So sabi ko sa kanya, ‘sige beh lapitan kita’ kasi that time wala pang final confirmation sa sakit ng pamangkin ko eh.’” Daquis, according to Gonzaga, has been helping her since CV got sick. Gonzaga said that her brother, CV’s father, will open a bank account on Friday where people can deposit their donations and will post the details on her social media account......»»

Nationals brace for tough rematch against Vietnam

The Philippine national women’s volleyball team hopes to capitalize on its home court advantage and with Vietnam missing the services of its main scorer as the second leg of the ASEAN Grand Prix kicks off Friday at the Sta. Rosa Multi-purpose Sports Complex in Laguna. Carrying the momentum of its bronze medal finish in the first leg of the four-nation tournament in Nakhon Ratchasima in Thailand, the Filipinas will try to duplicate its conquest of the Vietnamese in their scheduled 3:00 p.m. showdown. The match will be available via iWant and livestream (Philippines only). Livestream abroad is available via TFC.tv. Team captain Aby Marano sees the support of the home crowd as a big morale boost for the squad seeking to surpass its finish in the opening leg.  “Oo, kasi ang sarap maglaro na may sumisigaw sa’yo eh. Iba kasi dun sa Thailand kaunti lang ang Pilipino. Iba kasi yung may sumisigaw, tinatawag ang pangalan mo kasi nakaka-add ng confidence and morale yun,” said Marano. The Nationals are also looking to exploit the absence Vietnamese top hitter Thi Thanh Thuy Tran, who is currently training with her club in the Japan V. Premier League, though the Filipinas themselves lost two key players.      “Sa tingin ko malaking bagay din yun pero kasi nawalan din kami ng players like Alohi (Robins-Hardy) and Kalei (Mau). For sure another challenging match for us,” Marano said. “We’re not taking it as wala si T4 magiging complacent kami, we’re gonna take it na mas ma-inspire kami to play our A-game.” Vietnam coach Tuan Kiet Nguyen knows that their rematch against the Philippines will be tougher.     “The Philippine team now improved a lot. We lost the match in Thailand two weeks ago, but in this tournament, we're still not confident because one of our players cannot play here,” he said. Replacing Mau, who suffered an Achilles injury, and Robins-Hardy, who had trouble securing a Philippine passport, are Grethcel Soltones and Jasmine Nabor.     Alyssa Valdez, who skipped the Thailand edition because of an ankle injury, will make her debut for the Nationals in the tournament that serves as test event for the country’s hosting of the 30th Southeast Asian Games. First leg Best Middle Blocker award winner Majoy Baron, skipper Aby Marano, Ces Molina, Mylene Paat, Roselyn Doria, Aiza Maizo-Pontillas, Kath Arado and Dawn Macandili are back for another tour of duty.
