ONE Championship: Match with Eddie Alvarez a chance for Eduard Folayang to prove that he is World Class

Eduard "Landslide" Folayang, the face of Philippine martial arts, has a huge opportunity to prove something big in his next bout.   Set to face Eddie “The Underground King” Alvarez, this is the perfect opportunity for Folayang to prove that he is truly world class - according to his head coach Mark Sangiao.   The former ONE Lightweight World Champion is set to lock horns with one of the biggest names in the division at ONE: DAWN OF HEROES on 2 August at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines.   “This is another opportunity for us. We know what Alvarez did out West, he’s tested and he’s won multiple World Titles in two big promotions,” said Sangiao.   “This is where Eduard will prove that he’s truly world-class. In case he beats Alvarez, it’s a big fish for him,” he added. “It will also show how far we’ve come in mixed martial arts. This will only show that Filipinos can compete anywhere against anyone in the world.”   For Sangiao, this match is truly logical cause it pits the best of both worlds - with Alvarez ruling the west for the longest time while Folayang is making a name for himself in Asia.   Knowing the challenge that is in front of them, Sangiao is working double-time to make sure Folayang is in the best shape of his life the moment the Circle door closes on August.   “We’ve seen how Alvarez fights, and we know how Eduard fights. We’ll really prepare for this. This is going to be a great fight, it’s gonna be a war,” Sangiao shared.   “We’ll work on his striking more. I know they’ll go toe to toe. We’ll also work on Eduard’s conditioning.”   Refusing to make a prediction, Sangiao said that fans just better wait for the outcome on August - but he assures them that Folayang will come in prepared and that they’ll do everything to get the victory in Manila.   “It’s happened before and I don’t want to make a prediction now but the goal has always been to win,” said Sangiao. “All I can say is that we’ll be ready on August.”.....»»

UAAP Commissioner reduces Perasol s suspension

University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Basketball Commissioner Jensen Ilagan lifted the third and final game suspension imposed on University of the Philippines head coach Dolreich "Bo" Perasol. This comes after a meeting between Perasol and Ilagan last Saturday, October 12 in which the Fighting Maroons mentor expressed his sincerest apologies to the league, more importantly, to referee Jaime Rivano. "Last Saturday was the first time our office heard directly from Coach Bo and we appreciate his sincerity and evident humility in expressing his regret regarding the incident between him and referee Rivano which happened last September 29," said Ilagan. "Coach Bo emphasized how he deeply regretted his actions towards the official and extended his apology towards the UAAP Board, organization, and the entire community." With this, Perasol will make his return to the sidelines when UP takes on University of Santo Tomas on Wednesday, October 16 at 4:00 pm, SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City. The league, on the other hand, supports Ilagan's decision in lifting the ban on Perasol. "The UAAP, through the Board of Managing Directors and Board of Trustees, maintains that it will support and respect the Office of the Commissioner with regard to any technical concern," said Executive Director Rebo Saguisag. "It is also well within the Commissioner's power to reconsider on the ground of newly discovered evidence and/or developments such as availing in this case." During UP's game versus Ateneo back in September 29, Perasol was handed two technical fouls with 6:23 left in the third quarter of the contest. Perasol displayed "continuous flagrant acts of aggression" towards Rivano. This resulted in a three-game ban. Ilagan reminds all the members of the community to exert restraint and discipline, not just towards officials but to everyone on the court. "Mr. Perasol and every member of the UAAP are hereby reminded that any further unsportsmanlike acts on their part will be dealt with the full extent of the league," said Ilagan. The league is calling on the community to continuously strive for improvements moving forward. "Nevertheless, the parties recognize that there will always be room for improvement in the area of officiating which needs the full cooperation of everyone involved, particularly the coaches, players, and officials," shared Saguisag. "With the foregoing, let us all move on from the incident and focus on the game and the student-athletes.".....»»

Kevin Belingon gets submitted by Bibiano Fernandes at ONE:CENTURY

TOKYO, JAPAN - Team Lakay's Kevin "The Silencer" Belingon of the Philippines came up short in his attempt to reclaim the ONE Bantamweight World Championship after getting submitted by reigning titleholder Bibiano "Flash Fernandes in the second round of their co-main event bout at ONE: Century Part 2, Sunday evening at the Ryogoku Kokugikan here.  Belingon came out aggressive early, throwing hard kicks to the legs. Fernandes uncorked a few kicks of his own but ultimately decided to bring the fight down to the ground, where he is at his best.  On the mat, Fernandes remained in control as he slowly worked towards an arm-triangle choke, but Belingon was able to escape the submission attempt and survive into the next round.  Fernandes shot in early and scored the takedown once again in the second round, and was able to ultimately latch on to Belingon's back, which spelled the beginning of the end for the Pinoy challenger.  With one of the best grapplers in the world locking him up from behind, Belingon found himself in an undesireable position as Fernandes locked in a deep rear naked choke, forcing the Filipino to tap out within moments.  The stoppage time came in at 2:16 of the second round.  With the win, Fernandes likely closes the book on his storied rivalry with Belingon. .....»»
