Spurs missing Parker, Gasol for matchup against Cavaliers

CLEVELAND (AP) — The San Antonio Spurs will be without starters Tony Parker and Pau Gasol when they face the Cavaliers on Saturday night (Sunday, PHL time). Parker was expected to play after being scratched Thursday (Friday, PHL time) with a sore left foot. However, the team said Saturday (Sunday, PHL time) he is still experiencing pain and won't play. The 34-year-old is averaging 11.5 points per game, his lowest since his rookie season in 2001. Gasol is out indefinitely after breaking his left hand during warmups Thursday night. He underwent surgery Friday (Saturday, PHL time). While the team hasn't put a timetable on his return, Gasol is likely to miss at least one month. He's averaging 11.7 points and 7.9 rebounds. David Lee is expected to start in Gasol's spot. The Cavs are hoping to have Kevin Love in the lineup after he missed Thursday's (Friday, PHL time) game with back spasms. He took part in the team's shootaround Saturday (Sunday, PHL time) but is listed as questionable. .....»»

Gobert's 27-25 lifts Jazz over Mavs in OT

DALLAS (AP) Rudy Gobert had career highs with 27 points and 25 rebounds, including one on his missed free throw in overtime that led to the tying 3-pointer by Joe Johnson, and the Utah Jazz beat the Dallas Mavericks 112-107 on Friday night. Gobert had just missed both of his free throw attempts with 1:50 left, but the second one ricocheted right back to him. Johnson then hit a 3 to make it 107-all. After a Dallas miss by Deron Williams and a foul in the aftermath, Joe Ingles put the Jazz ahead to stay with two free throws with 1:35 remaining. Gobert finished with his 29th consecutive 10-rebound game. Gordon Hayward had 26 points, including a big 3-pointer late in regulation. Johnson finished with 15 points. Harrison Barnes had 19 points for Dallas, which had seven players score in double figures. Williams had 16 points and Seth Curry 15. Williams had consecutive layups high off the glass in overtime, the last with 1:36 putting the Mavericks up 107-104. Hayward's 3-pointer with 1:06 left in regulation had put the Jazz up 96-95, then Gobert had a rebound that led to his layup at the other end for a 98-95 lead with 36 seconds left. That rebound by Gobert came after a missed 3-pointer by J.J. Barea, who aggravated a calf issue on the shot. Curry, who had been on the bench for a long stretch, re-entered the game for Barea and made a wide-open tying 3-pointer from the left corner with 25 seconds left that tied it. Dirk Nowitzki had a season-high 10 rebounds for Dallas, but was just 1-of-13 shooting for three points. A minute into the fourth quarter, the 13-time All-Star and MVP from 10 years ago twice grabbed his own misses before being blocked on a third try. .....»»

Willett struggling to rediscover game before Masters defense

STEVE DOUGLAS, AP Sports Writer ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Danny Willett has 2½ months to rediscover his game before making a pressure-filled return to Augusta National as the defending Masters champion. br /> Odds are that won't be long enough. Willett finished 2016 in a rut after dealing with fresh levels of attention for being a major winner as well as a mid-season swing change. Following a short off-season when he sacrificed practice to enjoy a break from golf and his first Christmas as a father, his start to 2017 is hardly encouraging. br /> Rounds of 74 and 76 saw Willett become the biggest name to miss the cut at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Friday. He was 121st in a 126-man field, with his second round marred by a quadruple bogey 9 at the 10th when everything that could go wrong did go wrong. br /> Next comes the defense of his Dubai Desert Classic title in two weeks. Then all roads lead to Augusta for the Masters starting April 6. br /> 'I think if I'm playing bad, the attention will die down quite nicely, to be honest,' Willett said, when asked if the build-up to the Masters will be a hindrance. br /> Initially, the green jacket weighed heavily on the shoulders of Willett. Everyone wanted a piece of him after he capitalized on Jordan Spieth's back-nine collapse to be a surprise winner of the Masters. He popped up inside Wimbledon's Royal Box, and was a guest at the World Snooker Championship in his home city of Sheffield. br /> The attention died down, allowing him to return his focus to golf. But he is without a win since Augusta and has only three top-10 finishes in that eight-month period. br /> 'At the end of last year, I was working hard and doing the right things, but it was like I was knocking my head against a brick wall,' Willett said. 'I wasn't analyzing it properly. It was all just bad. It wasn't, but that's how I analyzed it.' br /> Willett is trying not to get too down about his play in Abu Dhabi. Finishing with two birdies — and two more decent birdie chances — in his final four holes helped, but couldn't disguise his problems in the previous 32. br /> His main issue was pulling lots of shots as he tried to hit a cut. That led to a triple-bogey 7 on Thursday and a quadruple-bogey 9 at the 10th hole on Friday, when he drove left into the desert, went out of bounds with his third shot, found a bunker with his fifth, and then three-putted. br /> Willett said he was 'slightly shocked' at the contrast between his form on the range and his form on the course. br /> 'Christmas golf-course rust,' Willett said. 'All joking aside, I know there were a few horrendous scores in there, but there was some better stuff in there, too.' br /> ___ br /> Steve Douglas is at www.twitter.com/sdouglas80 br />   .....»»

John Wall posts 29 points, 13 assists as Wizards top Knicks

NEW YORK (AP) -- John Wall had 29 points and 13 assists, scoring Washington's final four points in the last 32 seconds as the surging Wizards beat the New York Knicks 113-110 on Thursday night (Friday, PHL time). Otto Porter Jr. made six three-pointers for the second straight night and added 23 points, but the Wizards needed big plays from Wall down the stretch to win their fourth in a row. He made two free throws to put Washington back on top after New York had rallied to take a 110-109 lead, then rebounded Carmelo Anthony's miss and left all the Knicks in his dust as he raced down the floor for a dunk with 13.7 seconds to play. Anthony finished with 34 points but Wall stole the ball from Brandon Jennings to prevent the Knicks from attempting a three-pointer that could have tied it. .....»»

Derrick Rose powers short-handed Knicks past Celtics

em>By Ken Powtak, Associated Press /em> BOSTON (AP) — Derrick Rose matched his season high with 30 points, and the slumping New York Knicks beat the Boston Celtics 117-106 on Wednesday night (Thursday, PHL time). New York played without injured starters Kristaps Porzingis and Joakim Noah, but Mindaugas Kuzminskas and Willy Hernangomez each scored 17 points to help make up for their absence. It was just the third win in 14 games for the Knicks. Isaiah Thomas led Boston with 39 points, his 13th time this season with 30 or more points. Jae Crowder added 21 for the Celtics, who lost for only the fourth time in 17 games. Al Horford, Boston's big free-agent acquisition during the summer, had five points on 2-of-14 shooting. He was 1-for-8 on three-point attempts. Boston closed to 97-96 on Jaylen Brown's two free throws with just under eight minutes to play, but Justin Holiday and Courtney Lee nailed three-pointers 29 seconds apart, pushing New York's lead back to seven. Rose then capped an 8-0 spree by putting in his own miss after Thomas missed a jumper -- his seventh straight shot that was off. strong>TIP-INS /strong> Knicks: Porzingis was out with a sore left Achilles and Noah was sidelined by a sore left ankle. Porzingis missed his fourth straight game, but did shoot before the game. Noah played in their last game. Both big men are expected to undergo MRIs on Thursday (Friday, PHL time). F Lance Thomas was also out (fractured left orbital bone). Celtics: G Avery Bradley was a late scratch with a sore right Achilles after warming up. He played in Monday's (Tuesday, PHL time) win, but had missed the previous four games after straining the same Achilles. strong>SPECIAL MOMENT /strong> The fans gave a loud ovation to 11-year-old Stephen Register of Needham, Massachusetts, late in the opening quarter when he was shown on the Jumbotron. The curious case of Willy Wilson's curly hair

After a bout with amoebiasis and other sickness, Willy Wilson successfully returned to the Phoenix lineup Wednesday, providing the energy the Fuel Masters sorely missed in the middle of their Philippine Cup campaign. One thing the team surely didn't miss and would love to have gone immediately is Wilson's hair which went from a nice clean look to a curly. 'Willy Wilson gives us a lot of energy, it's his first game back. I just hope he cuts his hair because I don't like his hair,' head coach Ariel Vanguardia said of his veteran forward who put up a cool 12 points, nine rebounds. two assists, and two steals in 30 minutes against NLEX. 'We've been teasing him about his hair but at least Willy Wilson is back,' Vanguardia added. The Fuel Masters hate Wilson's hair so much that they were willing to pay for his haircut. The 13-year-veteran insisted that he's keeping his hairstyle for now. 'Actually he [coach Ariel] had the team chip in 10 pesos each for a haircut. I kindly declined, I'm trying to see  what's going on with the hair, it's different. I'm turning 37 in a few days so I just wanted to do  a little something different,' Wilson said. Going away from the topic of his hair for a little bit, Wilson is elated to be back for Phoenix in time for the Fuel Masters' playoff push. Although still not 100 percent, the former De La Salle Green Archer insists that he's in a better shape now compared to a couple of weeks ago when he tried to push things that obviously backfired on him and his team. 'I just started hurting myself and I took some time off and now I'm just starting to feel a little bit better. Still not 100 percent but everyday that goes by I'm trying to get more and more back to being myself,' Wilson said. Now back to his hair, Willie says he'll cut it when the time is right. And the right time is when summer rolls around. ' I like it but you know, when summer time comes around, it's going to be too hot so I'm gonna have to cut it. I'm not used to having long hair for too long but I used to do this back in college, I go the whole UAAP season without getting a haircut and come PBL time I have long hair. Definitely before summer I'll be cutting it,' he said. br /> --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8 .....»»

Bottas replaces Rosberg at Mercedes, Massa back at Williams

LONDON (AP) — Finnish driver Valtteri Bottas will race alongside three-time champion Lewis Hamilton at Formula One team Mercedes this season. The 27-year-old Bottas will fill the seat left by world champion Nico Rosberg's retirement. With Bottas moving on, F1 team Williams said Monday that Felipe Massa will come out of retirement to race with them for a fourth consecutive season. Rosberg retired only five days after beating Hamilton to his first world title in November. Mercedes also won its third straight constructors' championship. 'Sometimes in life, unexpected circumstances provide interesting opportunities,' Mercedes head of motorsport Toto Wolff said in a statement. 'Nico's decision in December was a big surprise - certainly a challenging situation for the team to handle. But weathering the storm makes you more resilient and we see this as another opportunity for the team to grow.' Bottas finished eighth in the drivers' standings with 85 points last season. In four seasons with Williams, he started 77 races and achieved nine podium finishes. Wolff said it was time for him to step up to the next level and 'how he can challenge for race wins and championships.' 'Valtteri is a no-nonsense guy: down to earth, straightforward and very focused,' Wolff said. 'Pretty Finnish, to be honest, and a great fit for us.' Massa will head back to Williams only a few months after retiring from Formula One. The Brazilian has agreed to a one-year deal and will race alongside F1 debutant Lance Stroll. 'I am very happy to have an opportunity to return to Williams. I always intended to race somewhere in 2017, but Williams is a team close to my heart and I have respect for everything it is trying to achieve,' Massa said. 'Valtteri has a great opportunity, given the turn of events over the winter, and I wish him all the best at Mercedes.' Earlier, Mercedes' young driver Pascal Wehrlein, who had been linked with replacing Rosberg, joined Swiss team Sauber. .....»»
