Towering middles Coleen Bravo and Lourdes Clemente combined for 33 of the Lady Altas’ 58 kills. Bravo registered her career-high 21 points coming off 18 attacks, two kill blocks and an ace for Perpetual while Clemente had 20 markers. Jamela Suyat added 15 points for the Lady Altas, who survived the upset-conscious Lady Bombers despite committing 40 errors.      But it was Perpetual Help playmaker Necelle Mae Gual that hogged the spotlight in the victory with her eye-popping 73 excellent sets.     The Lady Altas improved their record to 5-3 at fifth to sixth spot tied with idle Lyceum of the Philippines Lady Pirates behind no. 4 San Beda College (6-3), which secured at least a playoff for a semifinals spot. With their backs against the wall, the Las Pinas-based squad survived another win or go home match to remain in contention for the last two semifinals berths. Perpetual will close its elimination round campaign on Wednesday in a do-or-die match with the streaking Arellano University Lady Chiefs (7-1). The unbeaten San Sebastian College (7-0) and Lady Chiefs (7-1) secured the first two Final Four spots while defending champion College of St. Benilde (6-2) and San Beda College are both assured of at least a playoff for a semis seat.   The Lady Bombers closed their season with a 3-6 slate. Lionesses eye Final Four spot playoff

strong>Games Friday: /strong> (The Arena, San Juan) 9:00 a.m. --- San Beda vs. Mapua (m) 10:30 a.m. --- San Beda vs. Mapua(w) 12:00 noon --- Perpetual vs JRU (w) 1:30 p.m. --- Perpetual vs JRU (m)   San Beda College hunts to secure a playoff for a semifinals berth Friday when the Lionesses take on the listless Mapua Lady Cardinals to close their elimination round campaign in the 92nd NCAA women’s volleyball competition at The Arena in San Juan. Totting a 5-3 win-loss record at fourth to fifth spot tied with idle Lyceum of the Philippines University, San Beda puts its season on the line at the 10:30 a.m. clash with the Cardinals, who remain winless in eight games. A win by the Lionesses will not only give the Mendiola-based squad a playoff for a semifinals slot in case of a tie at 6-3 card but will also put San Beda in a good position to advance in the next round with Perpetual Help and LPU facing tough opponents in their remaining assignments. If San Beda hurdles Mapua and the Lady Altas and Lady Pirates absorbing their fourth loss, the Lionesses will get the last semis spot.   In case the Lionesses lose, SBC will have to wish that LPU drops its last game against San Sebastian College and for Perpetual to at least lose one of its last two remaining games for tie at 5-4 that will also force sa playoff for the last semis seat. Unbeaten SSC-R  (7-1) and Season 90 champion Arellano University secured the first two Final Four berths while defending champion College of St. Benilde (6-2) is assured of at least a semis seat playoff. San Beda is coming off a painful straight sets loss at the hands of the Lady Blazers, 25-12, 17-25, 23-25, 19-25, last week and is looking for a bounce back against the Lady Cardinals, who were swept by Emilio Aguinaldo College 18-25, 13-25, 24-26, last Friday. Meanwhile, the Lady Altas fight for survival when they face upset-conscious Jose Rizal University at 12:00 noon. With a 4-3 card, Perpetual can still make it to the Final Four if the Las Pinas-based squad completes a sweep of its last two games starting with the Lady Bombers. The Lady Altas will end the elims on January 25 against Arellano University. Perpetual survived its first test last week with a sweep of LPU, 25-21, 29-27, 25-23. JRU is out of contention with a 3-5 slate but is looking to play the spoiler’s role. In men’s play, San Beda (6-2) attempts to formally advance in the semis to join CSB (7-1) in a clash against Mapua (5-3) at 9:00 a.m. while defending champion Perpetual (6-1) also seeks a Final Four berth in a faceoff with JRU (1-7) at 1:30 p.m.       --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles    .....»»

Warriors break ground on San Francisco arena with fanfare

em>By Janie McCauley, Associated Press /em> SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Hard hats on, Steve Kerr and Kevin Durant lifted their golden shovels filled with dirt in a ceremonial moment for the Warriors franchise as it broke ground on snazzy new San Francisco digs at long last. And keeping KD in a Golden State uniform to see it through is a key part of the grand plan. This project has already been 4.5 years in the making. 'Honestly, a relief to some extent,' owner and CEO Joe Lacob said. Kerr is campaigning for the Golden State name to stay put along with his superstar players. 'We are the Golden State Warriors and it's not up to me, but I don't want it to change,' Kerr said. 'It's a unique name. It's the only one like it in the league. I would like to see that remain. I fully believe we are still the Bay Area's team, no matter whether we're playing in Oakland or San Jose or San Francisco. The name Golden State Warriors, there's too much history, there's too much tradition to change.' Even if in a success-oriented business like the NBA, nobody knows who will still be around when 18,000-seat Chase Center is complete. Kerr has no idea if he will even still be on the sidelines then. 'If you're lucky enough in life, like I've been, you reach a point where you get to choose who you work with, you get to choose where you live and you get to choose where you work,' Kerr said. 'By those metrics, I want to stay here forever. I'm also an NBA coach and I'm well aware that this building is going to take about three years to build, so the chances of me standing on the sidelines for the Warriors are slim to hopeful. Maybe as, like, the coach of another team. 'So far, so good, so hopefully I'll still be here.' Next, Golden State will likely work to keep both two-time reigning MVP Stephen Curry and Durant for the long haul by negotiating new deals this year. Kerr speaks to Durant daily and knows he is happy with his new Bay Area surroundings. 'We're going to win for a long time. ... We'll do whatever it takes to be champions again,' Lacob said of spending on players. He even publicly put KD on the spot: 'Kevin Durant came here without a new arena. Thank you, Kevin ... and also for agreeing to re-sign this summer. I have no idea how he's going to respond to that.' The Warriors did a little bit of everything to showcase how this will be far more than just a sports venue: The over-the-top groundbreaking featured a trio of songs by a gospel choir to kick off festivities, included a performance by the San Francisco Symphony and even acrobatic dancers dressed as construction workers for a grand finale of sorts that included beach balls dropping from an excavator before the equipment rigs moved in synchronization to the music in an extravagant routine featuring trampolines. Only boosting the mood was the California Supreme Court's decision earlier in the day to deny a petition by arena opponents seeking to overturn the Warriors' entitlements, further clearing the way for the project to move ahead — 'so we're totally good to go here,' Lacob noted. 'Wow, what a day!' said Warriors COO Rick Welts, noting the team will boast one of the world's premier 'gathering places' — for concerts and conventions, political events and more. 'Every city needs it. We need it. It will be great for San Francisco,' co-owner Peter Guber said. 'We now have proof, not just promises.' Curry got a break from public duties this time, a day after the Warriors pulled off a stunning 126-91 rout of LeBron James and the defending champion Cavaliers. Golden State hosts Oklahoma City on Wednesday night (Thursday, PHL time). San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee — among dozens of dignitaries in attendance — hollered, 'finally welcoming the Golden State Warriors home to San Francisco!' He rattled off the Warriors' star-studded roster and the energy around the franchise and its long-term mission. 'What's not to love?' he said. Lacob can't wait — and realizes how many people will miss the great vibe at the team's current home of Oracle Arena, an atmosphere the Warriors hope to replicate in many ways. Not only will the 11 acres include restaurants, cafes, businesses and other new additions to add vitality to the neighborhood, there will be a 51.5-acre bay-front park across from the arena. 'It is going to sing,' he said. 'It takes my breath away when we look at the renderings.' .....»»

Lady Chiefs clinch second Final Four seat

strong>Games Friday: /strong> (The Arena, San Juan) 9:00 a.m. --- San Beda vs. Mapua (m) 10:30 a.m. --- San Beda vs. Mapua(w) 12:00 p.m. --- Perpetual vs JRU (w) 2:30 p.m. --- Perpetual vs JRU (m)   Waxing-hot Arellano University occupied the second Final Four seat with its seventh straight win at the expense of the sputtering Lyceum of the Philippines University, 25-23, 25-23, 25-20, Wednesday in the 92nd NCAA women’s volleyball competition. The Lady Chiefs took advantage of the Lady Pirates’ 26 errors to exit The Arena in San Juan totting a 7-1 win-loss record behind the unbeaten San Sebastian College (7-0). Jovielyn Prado led Season 90 champion Arellano’s balanced scoring with 12 points anchored on 11 kills while adding 11 digs and nine excellent receptions on the defensive end. Team captain Rialen Sante chipped in nine markers while Andrea Marzan got eight points for the Lady Chiefs, who are in their fifth straight semis stint. Erica Calixto and Mary Anne Esguerra combined for 14 points for Arellano U, which also drew closer to a Final Four twice-to-beat advantage. In case SSC-R sweeps its last two games against LPU and defending champion College of St. Benilde, the Lady Chiefs’ next target is the no. 2 spot with its twice-to-beat advantage in a stepladder format. “Papalapit na kami ng papalapit. Basta lagi ko lang sinasabi sa team ko na hayaan n’yo na ang Baste na mag-no. 1 na sila ang importante ay makuha natin ang advantage ng top two,” said Arellano coach Obet Javier, whose squad will close the elims against Perpetual Help on January 25. “Lagi kong sinasabi na kahit nananalo tayo yung pursige natin dapat nandoon pa rin. Di tayo pwedeng mag-relax.” The Lady Pirates dropped their second game in a row as LPU dipped to 5-3 record tied with San Beda College.  Skipper Cherilyn Sindayen and Czarina Orros scored 11 points each while Christine Miralles and Monica Sevilla had 10 markers apiece for the Intramuros-based squad, which is now hanging for dear life for the last two semis seats. In men’s play, the Chiefs secured at least a playoff for a semifinals spot with a 25-22, 25-16, 25-27, 25-19, win over the Pirates. Arellano improved to 6-2 tied with San Beda while booting LPU (3-5) out of the semifinals race. In the junior’s division, the Junior Pirates moved a win closer to sweeping the elimination round and jumping straight to the Finals with a thrice-to-beat advantage after outlasting the Braves, 22-25, 25-22, 18-25, 25-19, 15-13. LPU is undefeated in six games while Arellano slid to 4-2 slate.       ---      Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles   .....»»

Bottas replaces Rosberg at Mercedes, Massa back at Williams

LONDON (AP) — Finnish driver Valtteri Bottas will race alongside three-time champion Lewis Hamilton at Formula One team Mercedes this season. The 27-year-old Bottas will fill the seat left by world champion Nico Rosberg's retirement. With Bottas moving on, F1 team Williams said Monday that Felipe Massa will come out of retirement to race with them for a fourth consecutive season. Rosberg retired only five days after beating Hamilton to his first world title in November. Mercedes also won its third straight constructors' championship. 'Sometimes in life, unexpected circumstances provide interesting opportunities,' Mercedes head of motorsport Toto Wolff said in a statement. 'Nico's decision in December was a big surprise - certainly a challenging situation for the team to handle. But weathering the storm makes you more resilient and we see this as another opportunity for the team to grow.' Bottas finished eighth in the drivers' standings with 85 points last season. In four seasons with Williams, he started 77 races and achieved nine podium finishes. Wolff said it was time for him to step up to the next level and 'how he can challenge for race wins and championships.' 'Valtteri is a no-nonsense guy: down to earth, straightforward and very focused,' Wolff said. 'Pretty Finnish, to be honest, and a great fit for us.' Massa will head back to Williams only a few months after retiring from Formula One. The Brazilian has agreed to a one-year deal and will race alongside F1 debutant Lance Stroll. 'I am very happy to have an opportunity to return to Williams. I always intended to race somewhere in 2017, but Williams is a team close to my heart and I have respect for everything it is trying to achieve,' Massa said. 'Valtteri has a great opportunity, given the turn of events over the winter, and I wish him all the best at Mercedes.' Earlier, Mercedes' young driver Pascal Wehrlein, who had been linked with replacing Rosberg, joined Swiss team Sauber. .....»»

New NFL stadium would play key role in 2024 LA Olympics

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Organizers trying to land the 2024 Summer Olympics for Los Angeles would include a new football stadium in the games' ceremonies. The NFL stadium being built in Inglewood near Los Angeles International Airport would be used for ceremonies along with Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum as part of the committee's concept to create a 'new games for a new era,' LA2024 announced Monday. The opening ceremony would be held July 20, 2024, and begin with a torch relay down the row of columns of the Coliseum, which hosted the 1932 and 1984 Olympics. The stadium is expected to seat 70,000 spectators for a Hollywood-produced spectacle of musical performances and a live viewing and virtual reality experience of all ceremonies at the NFL stadium. The torch relay would pass landmarks on the streets of Los Angeles until it reaches the NFL stadium, which would hold 100,000 spectators. The Inglewood stadium would host the opening ceremony, including the parade of nations, the Olympic oaths, the official opening of the games and the lighting of the flame. On Aug. 4, 2024, the Coliseum would host the closing ceremony, including the parade of athletes, the Olympic flag handover and the extinguishing of the flame. At the same time, the Inglewood stadium would host spectators for live viewing and high-tech entertainment. 'Hosting Olympic ceremonies across two iconic stadiums has never been done,' LA204 CEO Gene Sykes said. 'But LA's wealth of stadiums and technology mean we can think about 'What's next?' instead of just asking what has been done before.' The new NFL stadium is expected to open in 2019, when it will be the home of the NFL's Rams and Chargers. It already has been named as host of the 2021 Super Bowl. The Los Angeles bid committee said the Coliseum would host the track and field competition in 2024 using a temporary track deck. Starting next year, the Coliseum is set to undergo a $270 million renovation funded by the University of Southern California, whose football team plays there. .....»»
