ONE Championship: Eduard Folayang eager to test himself against Eddie Alvarez

When American mixed martial arts legend Eddie “The Underground King” Alvarez signed with ONE Championship back in late-2018, one of the athletes most excited about the news was Filipino MMA icon Eduard “Landslide” Folayang.    Alvarez was one of the Singapore-based martial arts promotion’s biggest signings to date and was an exciting addition to the already-deep ONE lightweight roster.    Folayang, being a perennial contender in the division, knew that one way or another, he would share the cage with the former UFC and Bellator titleholder.    Fast-forward to mid-2019, and true enough, Folayang and Alvarez are set to compete in a highly-anticipated feature bout at ONE: Dawn of Heroes on Friday, August 2nd at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.    Already a main event-caliber matchup, the Folayang versus Alvarez bout will have even more at stake, as it was elevated to a ONE Lightweight World Grand Prix semi-finals matchup following an injury that forced Russian Timofey Nastyukhin to withdraw from the card.    Now, aside from bragging rights, Folayang and Alvarez will fight for a spot in the lightweight tournament final opposite Turkish knockout artist Saygid “Dagi” Guseyn Arslanaliev at ONE: Century in Tokyo this coming October.    For Folayang however, this test against Alvarez - probably the toughest of his career - is more than just moving a step closer to a third run at the ONE Lightweight World Championship, but it’s also a chance to test himself against a man who has won two world titles in two major organizations.    “Siyempre, si Eddie Alvarez, nakita din naman natin na legit na champion si Eddie sa dalawang malalaking MMA organization, so hindi ko tine-take for granted itong laban na ito,” Folayang told ABS-CBN Sports.    Making the matchup even more potentially explosive is that both fighters are coming off devastating losses at ONE: A New Era back in March, and both of them are hungry to get back on track.    “We are both coming from losses so talagang yun pa yung nagpapa-init ng desire naming dalawa na bumawi for this important fight. Kailangan talaga mag-handa ng maayos kasi ayun nga, yung desire, yung willingness mo talaga makabalik dun sa title picture, yun talaga yung mga factors na tinitignan naming dalawa,” Folayang said.    “Sa akin, siguro more na excited ako kasi nakita mo yung resume niya, coming from that kind of backround, alam mo na mate-test ko yung sarili ko, kung paano ako mag-aadapt or mag-aadjust sa ganung taas ng level. I am grateful na dumating yung opportunity for me to test him and to test myself,” he continued.    It’s also a chance for Folayang to solidify his place even more as a world-class mixed martial arts talent.   “People will be convinced kapag nakikita nila yung mga resulta, na talagang nakikita nila yung mga pinag-daanan mo. It’s one of those ways na ma-solidify ko pa yung naging, at pagiging world champion ko.”   A win for Folayang on Friday night sets him up for possibly another run at the lightweight title.    To get there, however, he will first have to take out “The Underground King”.      Catch ONE: DAWN OF HEROES on Friday, August 2 LIVE on ABS-CBN S+A channel 23 starting at 8:30 PM. Livestream will be available on the ABS-CBN Facebook Page and on iWant  .....»»

Manny Pacquiao says Floyd Mayweather Jr. rematch is for the benefit of the fans

After his WBA (Super) Welterweight World Championship-clinching win over Keith Thurman in Las Vegas last July 20th, it didn't take long for Manny Pacquiao to start getting into it with rival Floyd Mayweather Jr. on social media.  The two welterweight stars crossed paths back in 2015 with Mayweather getting the unanimous decision win, but it left a lot of people with a sour taste in their mouth, believing that the undefeated star played a little too safe.  Since then, a rematch has been teased over and over again, and it looks like it has gotten to the now-retired Mayweather JR.  It was 'Money' who fired the first jab with a post that essentially said that Pacquiao was living off his legacy.  The Filipino boxing icon, while not one for too much trash talk, responded by calling Mayweather out for being at the Thurman bout.  Of course, Mayweather Jr. wasn't going to let Pacquiao have the last word and responded by claiming that he was a bigger draw and higher up on the PBC totem pole.  Pacquiao responded again, with another invitation for a rematch.  The social media back-and-forth, while has slowed down in the recent days, could go on for a bit, as fans continue to clamor for a rematch between the two boxing greats.  Whether or not it comes to fruition remains to be seen, but for Pacquiao, the ball is in Mayweather's court.  In an interview with Migs Bustos of ANC Gametime, the eight-division world champion explains why he believes people continue to call for a sequel to Pacquiao vs. Mayweather. Pacquiao believes that fans continue to ask for a rematch because they don't believe that Mayweather Jr. won the first match. For example, do you think the fans will ask the questions kung alam nila na talo ako sa fight? Hindi naman siguro ganun." "The fans are asking over and over [for a rematch] because they don’t believe na natalo ako during the last fight," he continued.  Of course, the fact still remains that Mayweather Jr. maintains that he is retired and has no desire to come back to the ring.  "On my part, I have no problem with that because I’m still active in the sport. That question is for him because he’s retired, so he needs to come back and announce that he will be fighting again with me." Check out the whole interview below: .....»»

PBA: Phoenix feeling the absence of Calvin Abueva

Safe to say, Phoenix has felt the absence of Calvin Abueva. The Beast has been tamed by an indefinite suspension by the PBA following a weekend of controversies to start the team’s campaign in the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup. So far, that suspension has covered eight games in the mid-season joust. The Fuel Masters are 3-5 in those eight games for a record of 4-6 overall. As such, Phoenix is in danger of missing the playoffs after bing a top-2 seed in each of the last two conferences. Medyo high risk pero high reward din naman,” head coach Louie Alas said of his enigmatic forward. “Yun nga yung ina-ano namin sa kanya ngayon. Ire-rehab yung anger management. Mabait ka namang tao eh,” he added. Alas said that Calvin has taken some measures to get him reinstated. He’s been in communication with the PBA and the Games and Amusements Board. However, the nature of his suspension remains confusing. He’s indefinitely suspended which could mean he could be back tomorrow or next year. There’s no set time really and all Calvin does is wait for the moment. Hopefully. Sana kung 'di man ngayon, makalaro next conference,” he added. Calvin has not been practicing with Phoenix, out of respect to the PBA’s suspension. However, Abueva is doing his individual workouts at Phoenix’s facility to stay in shape and be ready for when he’s allowed to come back. — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

Chiara Permentilla admitted the she struggled in her second season after a promising debut last year. So heading into Adamson University’s last game in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament on Saturday, the second year open spiker made sure that she’ll redeem herself. And she did. The Filipino-Italian played her best game of the tournament, scoring 16 points in the Lady Falcons’ 25-20, 25-23, 25-19, drubbing of University of the Philippines that ended their nine-game losing skid for a positive season-ender.      Permentilla had 12 kills, three aces a kill block for Adamson. A performance that she dedicated to her graduating seniors Eli Soyud and Joy Dacoron. The Lipa, Batangas pride thanked head coach Onyok Getigan for his trust. Magtiwala ka sa akin kasi kapag nilagay kita dyan may reason,’” she said. Permentilla averaged a paltry 7.5 points per game in the Lady Falcons’ first 13 outings.   It was a dip in her performance that she said rooted from a so-so performance in the offseason. “Siguro naka-affect din yung sa offseason namin. Kasi yung PVL (Premier Volleyball League) namin I was seldom used in eliminations and come yung semis namin dun na lang ako nagamit and then yun nga when coach Air (Padda) was with us sobrang taas ng expectations niya sa akin and I wasn’t delivering,” she explained. Permentilla was also aware that she drew a lot of criticisms for her lackluster game. “It’s not frustrating. Wala people will always say kung ano ang gusto nila. Permentilla learned a lot this season and breakout game – albeit a bit late – could be a start of something big next year in her third and last playing eligibility. Kasi whatever happens toward the end of the season is how people are gonna remember me.” --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

NCAA 95: Mapua has full faith Pao Hernandez can be next king of the sky

Pao Hernandez took until just one month to go before the NCAA 95 Men's Basketball Tournament to completely commit to Mapua University. This, long after he wowed just about everybody in Mapua High School’s championship run last season. Once Hernandez completely committed to continue in Intramuros, though, he set all of his heart and mind into it. And this time around, it didn’t take too long for the prized rookie to make an immediate impact in the ongoing NCAA 95. Averaging 8.9 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.1 steals through eight games, he has wasted no time in turning himself into a key cog in the Cardinals’ quest to take flight once more. Hernandez has delivered the goods the most in the three-game winning streak they are currently in where he has norms of 15 points, 1.3 triples, 5.0 rebounds, 2.0 steals, and 1.6 assists. For the remarkable rookie season he has been turning in thus far, his mentor is nothing but proud. Matapang, Finals MVP, hindi biro yung nagawa niya nun," Mapua head coach Randy Alcantara said. And so, of course, the two-time NCAA Jrs. and one-time MBPL champion coach is only happy to have the 6-foot-3 sweet-shooting forward on his side. This, after more than a few teams also expressed interest in Hernandez. For the 20-year-old's part, though, there was one and only one way to go. He then continued, "Kaya yun ang pinili ko - familiarity." And now he has established, and is reinforcing, himself in Intramuros, his mentor has full faith he is there to stay - and is there to bring back Mapua to continued contention. "Nakikita ko na after (team captain) [Laurenz] Victoria, magiging mukha na ng Cardinals si Paolo Hernandez," coach Randy said. Without a doubt, that is high praise for a rookie, however prized as he may be, but without a doubt as well, Hernandez does have what it takes to be a future King Cardinal. For now, though, he wants nothing more than to help his alma mater get back on track. As he put it, "Masaya ako sa tiwala ni coach, pero 'di ko muna iniisip yun. This season muna, tiyaga-tiyaga lang, step-by-step lang." --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

PVL: Jewelle Bermillo set to do double-duty to end PVL season

Rookie libero Jewelle Bermillo had quite the eventful first conference in the Premier Volleyball League.  In her maiden run with the BaliPure Purest Water Defenders in the 2019 PVL Reinforced Conference, Bermillo was on the receiving end of a hard-hitting facial courtesy of PetroGazz import Wilma Salas, and then made the news again after an incident with teammate and import Danijela Dzakovic.  As eventful as the Reinforced Conference was for Bermillo, it was largely a forgettable one as they finished last in the standings, failing to get a win in ten matches played.  It was indeed tough, but it was also a huge learning lesson for the 19-year old as she gears up for her second PVL conference.  "Yung experience ko, andami kong na-gain, naging mature ako last conference and madadala ko yun sa Open Conference," Bermillo told ABS-CBN Sports. While being the youngest on the team, Bermillo is positioned as one of the Water Defenders' leaders and anchors, and the responsibility is something that she welcomes with open arms. An incoming sophomore for San Sebastian College-Recoletos in the NCAA, being able to compete in the PVL, alongside some of the best talents in the country is definitely a goldmine of experience for the young libero, and she is nothing short of eager to be able to bring that experience back to her collegiate team once the NCAA Women's Volleyball Tournament begins next year. Bermillo will get even more training in becoming a leader in the closing leg of the PVL season, as she shared that she will not be suiting up for the Lady Stags in the Collegiate Conference, but will instead serve as an assistant coach, alongside legendary San Sebastian mentor Roger Gorayeb.  The young libero could hardly keep her excitment as she spoke about the massive opportunity.  "Sobrang excited ko, sobrang unexpected, parang, yung dream ko agad na, eto, sa age kong ‘to na naging Assistant Coach na ako ni Coach Roger, si Coach Roger pa," Bermillo said, excitement.  Bermillo adds that rather than having her play in the Collegiate Conference as well, Gorayeb saw fit to let her focus on her experience with BaliPure as a way to grow and develop as a player. Bermillo sees the job offer, so to speak, as a sign of trust from Gorayeb's side, and it should prove to be an invaluable experience, especially for someone who still has years to go in the collegiate ranks. Bermillo admits that she did try to convince Coach Roger to let her suit up for San Sebastian as well, but with the Collegiate Conference and the Open Conference set to overlap, the schedule would be a problem and it would put too much on the young libero's shoulders. .....»»

Meet the BAE of Philippine volleyball

“May bago ng boyband.” Philippine men’s volleyball team star Marck Espejo drew good laugh from his buddies Ranran Abdilla and Bryan Bagunas when asked about their reactions when fans tagged the trio with a playful name. The Nationals made the headlines after their breakthrough podium finish in the 2019 Thailand Open Sealect Tuna Volleyball Championships in Sisaket a couple of weeks back. But it was the trio of Bagunas, Abdilla and Espejo who took the spotlight. The trio logged in incredible numbers in the tournament and capped it off with a grander performance in the PHI’s come-from-behind five-set win over Saraburi-Thai Denmark in the battle for third. Espejo had 35 points, Bagunas fired 24 while Abdilla, who was converted into a utility, got 19 markers. Some witty fans tagged them as #BAE on social media, taking the first letter of their surnames to create a trend-worthy name for the Nationals’ big three.    “’Yung una kong naisip dun parang nagagawan na kami ng kalokohan so yung men’s team pala nabibigyan na ng pansin ng mga tao,” said Espejo, who was named 2nd Best Wing spiker in the tournament in his return to the national squad since making his debut in 2015. “Hindi lang pala yung eyes ng mga tao sa women’s team yung suporta rin pala meron na sa men’s team,” added the five-time UAAP Most Valuable Player, who played in the Japanese club league last year. Bagunas recalled that it all started when the explosive trio took a picture after their game. “Nag-picture tayong tatlo nun eh na ako, ikaw [Abdilla] saka si Marck, siguro kaya lumabas yung BAE na yun,” said Bagunas, the reigning UAAP MVP who is in his second stint with the national team. Abdilla, who like Bagunas is on his second tour of duty for the Nationals after donning the tricolors in the 2017 Southeast Asian Games, at first didn’t get what the acronym meant. Though the tag may bring some sort of pressure on the trio to perform as the face of the team, they also treat it as a morale boost.   “Pampa-good vibes siya, sa amin naman lahat ng mga wingers namin pwede talaga eh,” said Abdilla. Bagunas thought of it as an indication that they are slowly gaining a fan base after being overshadowed by the more popular women’s division. Espejo saw their bronze medal finish as a stepping stone not only to earn the respect and support of the fans but to also give the nation something to believe in come the 2019 SEA Games that the country will host on November. As for BAE, they’ll try to live up to the hype. “Papanindigan na yan! Nandyan na yan eh!” said Bagunas.   ---     Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

Nakuha namin suporta ng tao -- Alinsurin

The Philippine men’s national team captured a much bigger prize than the breakthrough bronze medal in the 2019 Thailand Open Sealect Tuna Volleyball Championships. The squad earned the respect and support of the Filipino fans and a chance to gauge its level of play against the region’s powerhouse. Overshadowed by the more popular women’s volleyball team, the Nationals put themselves on the spotlight this time after their podium finish in the tough tournament that served as the team’s first international foray heading into the Southeast Asian Games in November. Yun naman ang gusto naming makuha,” said head coach Dante Alinsunurin on Wednesday during the team’s appreciation dinner set by its corporate sponsor Rebisco at Joy Nostalg Hotel in Pasig City. The men’s squad was joined by the members of the women’s U-23 team which also participated in the Thai tourney with Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas, Inc. board member and national volleyball team program head Peter Cayco and Rebisco top brass Jonathan Ng. The Nationals bannered by the tournament’s 2nd Best Wing Spiker Marck Espejo, Bryan Bagunas, Ranran Abdilla, skipper John Vic De Guzman, Kim Malabunga and veteran setter Jessie Lopez proved their doubters wrong by snatching a podium finish after a hard-fought 22-25, 27-29, 25-18, 25-18, 26-24, win over Saraburi-Thai Denmark in the battle for third in Sisaket, Thailand. The Filipinos suffered an early setback after bowing down to Thai Air Force in four sets. Bagunas paced the Nationals a four-set bounce back victory over Fine Chef Phitsanulok to advance in the semifinals. The Nationals came up short the Final Four at the hands of Thai Army but redeemed themselves for the consolation with Espejo dropping 35 and Bagunas posting 24 markers in the match that saw the Filipinos display their blocking prowess with 22 kill blocks. The four-time UAAP champion mentor also stressed the importance of seeing where the squad is right now as they prep up for the biennial meet that the country will host from Nov. 30 to December 10. “Siyempre sobrang importante ‘yung naging sitwasyon namin sa Thailand. Hindi tayo nanghuhula. Nakita namin ang kalaban namin and kung anong ginagawa nilang play or ginagawa pagdating sa laro,” he said. The Nationals will fly to Thailand for a training camp from July 28 to August 10. The Nationals will also fly to Japan to train from November 5 to 20.   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles  .....»»
