MMFF 2018: Hits, misses and missteps

We spent Christmas Day watching six films that we knew would be shamelessly formulaic, knowing how the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) had unapologetically eased out the "underperforming" indies after the annual fiesta's 2016 edition. What we didn't expect was to sit through viewer-pandering commercial flicks that seemed like they were made in the '80s or '90s, just before local audiences got tired of patronizing those by-the-numbers actioners and silly comedies. If this year's entries really did go through a rigorous screening process, what does that say about the standards of the people behind the MMFF? We aren't just talking about Cannes-winning auteur Brillante Ma Mend...Keep on reading: MMFF 2018: Hits, misses and missteps.....»»

Floats of the "Magic 8" film entries were showcases of creativity that flaunted what they had to offer when the festival premieres on Christmas Day. The "Fantastica" float kicked off the parade without any of its cast on board. Celebrities in the film only rode atop the float about an hour after it started moving. The Unkaboggable Vice Ganda with Dingdong Dantes and Richard Gutierrez led the cast of "Fantastica." Kapamilya love teams Maymay Entrata...Keep on reading: 2018 MMFF Parade of Stars pushes through despite heavy rain.....»»

The MMFF 2018 in a nutshell

Out of the eight entries in this year's Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), I was able to watch five of them at our Cinema Evaluation Board (CEB) screenings. We gave an A grade to "Rainbow's Sunset" and "Jack Em Popoy: The Puliscredibles," while "One Great Love," "Fantastica," "The Girl in the Orange Dress," "Mary, Marry Me" and "Aurora" were graded B. Even if you are not exactly a fan of local movies, why not check out any of the MMFF entries in the spirit of Christmas? The annual film festival is already part of Pinoys' Yuletide tradition. So, join in the MMFF frenzy and show that love is "homegrown," indeed. Here are my musings about the entries: Gloria Romero ought to win...Keep on reading: The MMFF 2018 in a nutshell.....»»
