National, Adamson gun for Final Four slots
Defending champion National University and Adamson University look to book their tickets into the Final Four when they face separate cellar-dwellers in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena. The Lady Bulldogs, beaming with confidence after winning three straight games, face winless University of the East at 2 p.m. following the 12 p.m. encounter between the Lady Falcons and skidding University of the Philippines. With league-leading De La Salle University securing the first semifinals berth and a twice-to-beat advantage, only three Final Four seats remain up for grabs for four teams still in contention to advance to the next round. Both the Lady Bulldogs and the Lady Falcons only need to win one more game to join the Lady Spikers. NU, holding an 8-3 win-loss record tied with idle University of Santo Tomas at the second spot, is tipped to get what it wants against a team that has dropped all of its previous 11 matches. The Lady Bulldogs cruised past another semis contender Far Eastern University, 25-21, 25-14, 25-23, last Sunday. NU defeated UE in an emphatic straight sets fashion in their first meeting. Still, there’s no letting up for the Lady Bulldogs, who are not only looking to return to the Final Four but also snatching the last semis incentive. “We know we have a big chance of getting into the Final Four but what we’re focusing on now is improving how we play,” NU skipper Ces Robles said. Just like Robles, opposite spiker Alyssa Solomon, who had 18 points in the last match, knows that the Lady Bulldogs need to get past the Lady Warriors first to secure a semis spot before shifting their focus on the twice-to-beat. “We’re taking it one game at a time because all games are important now,” she said. “We have to apply what we trained and as our coaches always tell us, we have to be consistent starting training.” Denied in its first two attempts to get into the Final Four, Adamson tries for a third time against a relatively lighter opponent hobbled by an eight-game losing slump. The Lady Falcons are at solo fourth spot sporting an 8-4 slate. The Jerry Yee-mentored squad will be coming down on the Fighting Maroons hot as they seek to regain lost confidence and winning ways after a heartbreaking, 17-25, 27-25, 25-23, 23-25, 9-15, defeat at the hands of the Lady Spikers last Wednesday. Kate Santiago, who dropped 21 points in a lost cause last game, rookie Trisha Tubu and Lucille Almonte together with top setter Louie Romero are aching to get back on court to redeem themselves after back-to-back losses. But Adamson is wary of how dangerous UP is despite its series of misfortunes. Playing with nothing to lose, the Fighting Maroons could play the spoilers’ role to improve their disappointing 1-10 record and keep the Lady Falcons from entering the second round. In men’s play, reigning champion Bulldogs go for their 12th straight win in as many games at 4 p.m. against the Red Warriors (4-7) while the Falcons (1-11) and the Fighting Maroons (1-10). Jaime Gubaton diverts from usual style to relay urgent message
In this era of constant waste and ruin, “Foiled” serves as a reminder of the dangers of mindless consumerism and its deadly consequences on the environment. Presented by Arte Bettina, the solo exhibition of Filipino visual artist Jaime Gubaton is on view from 30 August to 12 September at the ArtistSpace, located at the ground level of Ayala Museum Annex, Makati Avenue corner Dela Rosa Street, Greenbelt Park, Makati City. Gubaton, a veteran artist with the burning enthusiasm of a student, considers artmaking a continuous process — a cycle of retaining, changing and revisiting. Born in 1981, he is an artist who mainly works with oil painting and contemporary figures and portraits juxtaposed with various elements, some linear and graphic representations, with the use of appropriated materials that are borrowed from a day-to-day context. Gubaton considers making art a craft that is executed using clear formal rules and that always refers to social reality. His works are notable for their perfect finish and tactile nature. This is of great importance and bears witness to great craftsmanship. The style and the corresponding vision of the artist naturally evolve and mature, but there is something in the initial creative impulse that continues to be sustained through their works, whether it is a preferential treatment of color, a recurring image or a conspicuously revisited subject matter. In the case of Gubaton, now considered one of the most sought-after artists working today, an emphasis on certain qualities of the Filipino identity can be discerned, even if he has fully ventured into photorealistic depictions of portraits. His formal arts education began at the University of the East in Caloocan, where he majored in advertising. He was already winning major art competitions while still in college. In 2002, he won the grand prize for both the PLDT-DPC Directory Cover National Competition and Art Petron, which influenced him to pursue a career as a painter. Art competitions served as his early training ground for painting until he was invited to participate in several art exhibits by various galleries both locally and internationally. [gallery columns="2" size="full" ids="179672,179671"] [gallery size="full" columns="2" ids="179670,179669"] “My artistic journey is a learning process that enables me to improve my skills and techniques. It opens opportunities for me to better appreciate the history and culture of the world. Allow yourself to grow at your own pace. Don’t rush the process,” Gubaton said. Despite being a firm believer in the foundational skills of art, he centers his practice on experimentation and polishes his skills by regularly stepping away from routine — a feat many shy away from due to human nature’s fear of the uncertain. “Foiled” showcases this as he deviates from human portraiture and instead breathes nature and its pollutants onto a dark canvas. As much as “Foiled” has prevention at its core, Gubaton weaves the multiplicity of his concept into the composition of his works. His paintings take inspiration from a foiling technique seen in jewelry making and mimics its principle of using foil to further emphasize its symbolism, spotlighting his subjects onto an almost black base. There is no mistaking the message of his show, and that is intentional. He is blunt in his execution and his intentions could easily be received at a glance. Nature is in danger, and its stewards have become its executioners. Gubaton takes this opportunity to champion what he has always implemented in his act of creation, a willingness to change. ArtistSpace, an art gallery established in 2004, is dedicated to the promotion of contemporary visual arts featuring a wide range of styles and media from local and foreign artists in two-week exhibitions. The gallery is open daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Admission is free. For queries on the exhibition, contact Arte Bettina at 905-2696095, 27004-3209 or artebettinagallery@gmail.com. Fans in frenzy as Beyoncé kicks off concert tour
Ecstatic Beyoncé fans sang and danced in feverish excitement in Stockholm Wednesday as the superstar kicked off her first solo tour in seven years with a futuristic spectacle featuring a lunar rover, an airborne horse, and wall-to-wall rhinestones. Hours before the doors opened hundreds of people were thronging outside the stadium, including some who had traveled halfway around the world to catch the show, anxious to see the global music icon -- one of the world's best-selling artists. Once the concert was about to begin, the tens of thousands of fans in the 60,000-capacity Friends Arena -- filled to the brim -- erupted in cheers as their "queen" emerged on stage. "Just want to say: Y'all make me so happy," Beyoncé said as the concert began. "I see familiar faces, people that flew from very, very far to come see the first show tonight," she told the audience at the outset of the three-hour space and science fiction-themed show. The show features Beyoncé performing atop a lunar vehicle, playing the role of a news anchor while dressed as a queen bee, and suspended above the crowd as she sits on a model horse completely covered in sparkling rhinestones. "This was another level. Amazing, I can't wait for the rest of the tour," Abdul Ibraimoh, a 33-year-old artist manager from London, told AFP after the show. "There was a lot of anticipation for what she was going to do, and yes I'm speechless, it was just incredible," Shane Barkey, a 31-year-old radio host from Ireland, said. Beyoncé, who has a record 32 Grammy awards; is in the top 10 biggest-grossing female artists. She is also a fashion icon, with designers queueing up for her attention. Many of the fans in Stockholm sported cowboy hats and rhinestones, mimicking the look of the performer's outfit in the ads announcing the 57-stop European and North American tour. Julie Vargas, who flew in from Houston, Texas -- Beyoncé's hometown -- confessed to having a "shrine" dedicated to the star at home. "I don't want any spoilers, I wanted to be the first to see it and take the news back to H-town baby!" the 38-year-old surgical technologist told AFP as she waited in line in the early afternoon. The "Renaissance World Tour", announced in February after being teased last autumn, is the star's first solo tour since 2016. Tickets sold out so quickly for the opening show that tour organizers added a second concert at the same venue for Thursday. From there, she goes to Brussels this weekend. The tour, which continues until September, is expected to earn the international artist nearly $2.1 billion, according to business magazine Forbes. She is already a multi-millionaire. "We love Beyoncé, she's the queen, that's why we are here of course," 36-year-old artist Kasher Bloom from Riga told AFP. "Beyoncé is the queen! Our mother, everything! I would do anything for her," Jarra Jatta, a 21-year-old fan from Helsingborg in southern Sweden. In February, Beyoncé made history by becoming the most successful artist in the history of the Grammys, surpassing the late classical conductor Georg Solti's long-standing record of 31 lifetime trophies. But despite winning another four Grammys, fans were disappointed that she missed out on the award for album of the year for her seventh studio album, the house-tinged "Renaissance". The 16-song 2022 album was an instant hit and earned wide praise for its deep ambition. Born Beyoncé Giselle Knowles, the now-41-year-old has been in the upper echelons of pop music since her teenage years. She initially rose to fame as part of Destiny's Child -- whose smash hits included "Survivor" and "Say My Name" -- before embarking on a wildly successful solo career. From setting the standard for the overnight album drop to delivering her earth-shattering "Homecoming" show at Coachella in 2018, Beyoncé has long bucked the industry's conventional wisdom. She is simultaneously one of music's most private and most watched stars. Her paradigm-shifting 2016 album "Lemonade," which emphasized Black womanhood against the backdrop of America's heritage of slavery and culture of oppression, remains one of the most venerated musical projects in recent memory. Then she dropped the critically acclaimed song "Black Parade" in June 2020, amid nationwide protests ignited by the murder of an unarmed Black man, George Floyd, at the hands of a white police officer. Adamson nets promising big man Tumaneng
Adamson University beefed up its frontline after Filipino-Kiwi big man Jireh Tumaneng commits to join the school’s basketball program. The 6-foot-8 banger joined the team on Monday and was warmly welcomed by the squad led by men’s team head coach Nash Racela. “Adamson is blessed to get the commitment of Jireh. We know how capable he is and we're excited to develop him to become a more well-rounded big man here in Adamson," Racela said. Tumaneng, 16, led Pinoy Mavs NZ to the Division 1 of the Smart-NBTC National Finals after averaging 13.7 points, 12.0 rebounds, and 1.3 assists in 33 minutes of play. He studied at Westlake Boys High School in Auckland and can still play two more years with the Baby Falcons in the juniors division before progressing to the seniors division. Also present for Tumaneng's first practice were Adamson athletic director Fr. Aldrin Suan, CM and Pinoy Mavs NZ coach Manu Hoque. Tumaneng's ceiling will be a big plus for Adamson which currently has seniors Lenda Douanga and Vince Magbuhos, together with AP Manlapaz and the returning Aaron Fermin as part of its frontcourt for the upcoming University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 86 men's basketball tournament.
