Luzon nails first win at Del Monte
MANOLO FORTICH, Bukidnon — Xhyla Luzon captured his first-ever title, Lois Laine Go pulled off a come-from-behind win and Nicole Gan continued to stamp her class at the close of the JGFP Del Monte Junior Open at the Del Monte Golf Club on Sunday. Brittany Tamayo posted a tournament-best 36-hole total of four-under-par while Ethan Lago was the only other player who finished under par. Luzon, the 17-year-old son of a Del Monte caddie, made two birdies against five bogeys to close with a 75 and complete a three-shot victory over Cliff Nuneza and Simon Wahing in the boys’ 15-18 division. “Putting,” was Luzon’s curt reply, adding he saved a lot of pars. Luzon, who picked up the game at the age of six, stopped playing for two years due to Covid-19 restrictions. He started playing again only last year. Go, the only entry from Cebu City, shot a 79 to edge overnight leader Zero Plete by one shot in the girls’ 13-14 bracket. She made two birdies against five bogeys and a pair of double bogeys to finish on 162 and capture only her second crown. Plete, the winner in the Davao and Pueblo de Oro legs, had a chance to win with a birdie putt from eight feet but three-putted for an 85 and second place. Gan completed a sweep of the Visayas and Mindanao legs after a pair of 79s in the girls’ 11-12 division. Counting her win in the IMG Junior World Qualifiers at Eagle Ridge, Gan has now won the last five events she took part. Tamayo, playing her last tournament in the 9-10 class, followed a 68 with a 72 for the runaway victory while Ethan Lago wound up on 143 after a 72. Lago was cruising on 6-under going into the last three holes but stumbled with a pair of triple bogeys. Velinda Castil edged Kiara Montebon by one shot in the girls’ 15-18 after matching par.
