CIT-U snaps three-game losing skid with a win over Verallo
CEBU CITY, Philippines— After three disappointing defeats, the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildcats finally earned their first sweet victory in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (Cesafi) men’s basketball during their game against neophytes, the Felipe Verallo Foundation College (FVFC) Blue Dragons, 83-71, on Sunday, October 15, 2023, at the Cebu Coliseum. The Wildcats, who became viral for their 74-point loss,75-109, against the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters earlier this month, found their winning ways on Sunday with rookie John Rey Guinita leading them with 26 points. Guinita perfectly balanced his scoring after he tallied 13 points in each halves of the game. Edwin Charles Jao contributed 14 points, while Jim Brent Taala added 12 markers, nine of which came from beyond the arc. The victory improved the Wildcats’ record to one win and three losses, while the Blue Dragons of head coach Titing Manalili fell to a 0-4 (win-loss) record putting them at the bottom of the team standings. Francis Earl Solis scored 14 points for Verallo, while John Gellego added nine points in their losing efforts. CIT-U has a chance to grab a back-to-back win as they take on another newcomer, the Benedicto College Cheetahs, on October 21, while Verallo returns into action on the same date against the formidable USJ-R Jaguars. CEC 65, CIT-U WILDKITTENS 44 Contrastingly, CIT-U’s high school squad bowed down to the Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons, 65-44, also on Sunday. Caelan Mack once again topscored the Dragons. Ezekiel Zamora scored 12 points for CIT-U, while teammate Sam Kyle Aballe had eight points in their defeat. CEC improved to a 4-1 card to stay at the No. 3 spot in the high school team standings, while the Wildkittens dropped to the sixth spot with a 1-2 slate. USC 64, DBTC 57 On the other hand, the University of San Carlos (USC) Baby Warriors ended their four-game losing skid by beating the Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) Greywolves, 64-57, in the other high school game on Sunday. The win improved USC’s record to 1-4 slate, while DBTC’s losing woes continued as they dropped to a 0-5 card. Kent Dave Chavez unloaded 18 points, while Bhenz Daug contributed 10 points for USC. Jefferson Villareal spoiled his 17-point outing.....»»

‘GOLDEN BELLS’ Kurt Soberano’s Golden Bells is the only entry with superior technical craft. However, it severely alienates the audience by picking a subject matter that not everyone can relate to. Sure, it carries universal themes of familial relationships, hopes, desires and sacrifice, but Golden Bells fails to connect emotionally. It’s a monotonous story about a Filipino-Chinese family running a garments business, with one of the sons as its central character. It is through the son’s lens that we learn his perspective of the family patriarch. Too bottled up in its own world on a very surface level, it is largely unrelatable and feels more like a commercial ad for a business rather than a piece of cinema. (1 out of 5 stars). ‘TONG ADLAW NGA NAG-SNOW SA PINAS’ Joshua Caesar Medroso’s monochromatic Tong Adlaw nga Nag-snow sa Pinas starts off quite well. Set in a remote and impoverished coastal town, two young boys, Makong and Renren, are playing, pretending that it’s snowing by making fake snowflakes out of styrofoam boxes. The styro-snow looks great in black-and -white and Medroso manages to evoke nostalgic imagery of a pre-Internet childhood. But underneath the innocent play lies a violent subtext: child abuse cushioned by a melodramatic portrait of compassion and friendship. The short abruptly ends, and it feels as if Medroso’s other video clips got mistakenly deleted and he has no choice but to finally put the end credits and submit his film. (1 out of 5 stars) [caption id="attachment_170059" align="aligncenter" width="656"] Ang Kining Binalaybay Kag Ambahanon ko para sa Imo[/caption] ‘ANG KINING BINALAYBAY KAG AMBAHANON KO PARA SA IMO’ Kent John Desamparado’s family drama is heartbreaking and appeals to the special bond between a grandfather and a granddaughter. It follows a poor, ailing fisherman, who, no longer able to take care of his young granddaughter, painfully decides to give her away to other relatives. The filmmaker takes the viewer along on their journey to inevitable doom. Desamparado manages to capture the nuances of a very loving relationship between the grandpa and the little girl. It breaks the heart, and also becomes a light commentary on the realities of poverty. However, it’s still rough around the edges and the finale is too weak. (2.5 out of 5 stars). ‘MAKOKO SA BAYBAY’ This is so forgettable I honestly could not recall the details of the short. I could vaguely recall a very strong sunset color palette, sea monsters and mothers and little kids longing for their mothers. If something like this vanishes from your mind soon after you’ve left the cinema, then you get my point. (0 out of 5 stars). [caption id="attachment_170060" align="aligncenter" width="600"] ‘Maudi Nga Arapaap’[/caption] ‘MAUDI NGA ARAPAAP’ Daniel Magayon’s psychological horror short is funnier than scary, amusing rather than disturbing. It follows a graveyard-shift female nurse with experiences of traumatic child abuse by her mother, who has recently died. The scenes of a child being abused by the very person that should nurture her is heartbreaking. But the occasional appearance of a demon-like creature related to a plant is funny and fails to evoke sinister vibes. Magayon, however, still manages to send a clear message about the fragile relationship between a mother and daughter, as well as the long-term effects of child abuse. The literal monster element is wholly unessential, offering nothing sinister or metaphorical, ultimately causing the short’s downfall. Wildfire destroys Hawaii town, kills 36
A wildfire fanned by strong winds from a typhoon off the coast of Hawaii’s Maui island destroyed a tourist town, killed at least 36 people and cut power affecting 13,000 people, officials said on Wednesday. “As the firefighting efforts continue, 36 total fatalities have been discovered today amid the active Lahaina fire,” the Maui county government said in a statement. Residents of Lahaina trapped by the fast-moving fire were forced to jump into the ocean to escape death. “People are jumping into the water to avoid the fire,” United States Army Major General Kenneth Hara, the state adjutant general, told Hawaii News Now. The Coast Guard said it had “successfully rescued 12 individuals from the waters off Lahaina” and it was sending other vessels to Maui. Hara said strong winds had prevented helicopters from being used to carry out rescues or fight the fires. Lahaina resident Claire Kent said that homeless people and people without access to vehicles seemed to have been trapped in the town. Kent also said power and cell phone coverage had been knocked out Tuesday. Emergency services were overwhelmed by the blaze that appeared to have erupted almost without warning. “911 is down. Cell service is down. Phone service is down,” Lieutenant Governor Sylvia Luke told CNN. “Much of Lahaina on Maui has been destroyed and hundreds of local families have been displaced,” Governor Josh Green said. Chrissy Lovitt told the outlet every boat in Lahaina Harbor had burned. Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen told a press conference that Maui’s hospital “was overburdened with burn patients, people suffering from inhalation.” A video posted on social media showed blazes tearing through the heart of the beachfront town and sending up huge plumes of black smoke. 3 acquitted seafarers return from Nigeria
Three Filipino seafarers acquitted of drug charges in Nigeria arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport on Monday night, while the remaining eight are set to be repatriated Tuesday night. According to Captain Edgardo Flores, consultant and former owner’s representative of the Greek-owned Eastern Mediterranean Manning Agency, seafarers Romnick Albarracin, Kent Ryan Oblenda, and Judezar Quetua arrived on 7 August at the NAIA Terminal on a Qatar Airways flight QR-1432 from Doha, Qatar. Arriving on Tuesday in the same gateway are Reynante Antolin, Edgar Bechayda, Fidel Gerapusco, Dennis Maningo, Ervin Pabuaya, Bryan Ramos, Ralph Sumangil and Voltaire Tejero. Flores said the first three seafarers were welcomed by Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega, Department of Migrant Workers Assistant Secretaries Fely Bay and Venecio Legaspi, representatives from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration. He said the DMW provided P30,000 cash assistance for each seafarer, which according to Flores will help a lot to restart their lives and seafaring journeys again. Meanwhile, Flores questioned operatives of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency who also attended the arrival of the three seafarers. He said the PDEA personnel wanted to seal the papers of the three seafarers as “DEPORTED” instead of “REPATRIATED.” “These seafarers were all freed by a Nigerian court, why will they tag them as deported? If you tag them deported, the Bureau of Immigration will put DEPORTED on their passports, which can compromise their future jobs,” he said. Canada opens investigation of Titanic sub implosion
Montreal, Canada —Canadian authorities on Saturday began a probe into the implosion of the Titan submersible, whose disappearance near the wreckage of the Titanic with five men aboard had set off a multinational search-and-rescue operation. "Our mandate is to find out what happened and why and to find out what needs to change to reduce the chance or the risk of such occurrences in the future," said Transportation Safety Board (TSB) chair Kathy Fox. "We know everybody wants answers, particularly the families and the public," she told reporters in St. John's, Newfoundland. The full probe could take between 18 months to two years. TSB investigators on Saturday boarded the Canadian-flagged Polar Price cargo ship, which had set sail from St. John's last weekend to bring the ill-fated Titan to its launch point in the North Atlantic. The Transportation Safety Board routinely probes air, rail, marine, and pipeline accidents with the aim of improving transportation safety. It does not assign fault or determine civil or criminal liability. The US Coast Guard said Thursday that all five people aboard the submersible had died after the vessel suffered a "catastrophic implosion." A debris field was found on the seafloor, 1,600 feet (500 meters) from the bow of the Titanic. Meanwhile, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) was looking into whether any criminal laws had been broken in the chain of events that led to the deaths of the Titan adventurers. The investigators' job is to determine "whether or not a full investigation by the RCMP is warranted," said Newfoundland and Labrador Superintendent Kent Osmond. "Such an investigation will proceed only if our examination of circumstances indicates criminal federal or provincial laws may possibly have been broken." jle/acb/tjj © Agence France-Presse The post Canada opens investigation of Titanic sub implosion appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
King Charles, Queen Camilla celebrate first Royal Ascot winner
King Charles III, along with his wife Queen Camilla, recorded his first win at Royal Ascot since he succeeded his late mother Queen Elizabeth II as Desert Hero won the King George V Stakes on Thursday. Both Charles and Camilla wiped tears away in the Royal Box as Tom Marquand got their horse past Valiant King to take the honors. They descended from the box to the winner's enclosure, the king with a broad smile on his face as he shook hands with Marquand and trainer William Haggas. The royal couple then accepted the trophy from the Duke of Kent with Princess Anne and her daughter Zara Tindall looking on. "I am thinking of how proud the Queen would have been for Charles and Camilla to have a winner and keep the dream alive," said Zara. "It is a new excitement for them. Like all those owners who have a horse here, they are living that dream and hope and fulfilling it is incredible." For Haggas -- who had lunch at Windsor Castle with Charles and Camilla on Wednesday -- it was a wonderful experience. "Absolutely fantastic, it is a great honor and I am thrilled they were here to see it," said Haggas. Due to protocol those conversing with the monarch are forbidden from relaying what is said but 62-year-old Haggas said the importance of the victory was immense. "They have been looking forward to Ascot for a long time and wanted to have as many runners as possible and they will be absolutely delighted," he said. "It is very important for them to have a winner and that they enjoy it." Marquand is normally pretty restrained in celebrating but he let himself go after this landmark victory, punching the air and grinning and chatting to spectators as he came back to the enclosure. "This is one of proudest moments of being in the saddle," he said. "I grew up watching horses like this win for Her Majesty the Queen. "I am in a dream world... Royal Ascot is the pinnacle and riding a royal winner is so special. It is an emotional day." Charles and Camilla still have some way to go to overhaul Queen Elizabeth II, who had 24 Royal Ascot winners, including Estimate in the week's most historic race, the Ascot Gold Cup, in 2013.
