PSG sign South Korea’s Lee from Mallorca
Paris Saint-Germain has signed South Korean international Lee Kang-in from Real Mallorca, the Ligue 1 champions announced on Saturday. The 22-year-old becomes PSG's fourth signing of the close season. "It's incredible to be able to join Paris Saint-Germain, it's one of the biggest clubs in the world, with some of the greatest players in the world," said Lee in a statement. "I can't wait to start this new adventure." Lee made his first-team breakthrough at Valencia as a winger after coming through the club's academy, but can also play more centrally. He scored six goals in 39 matches for Mallorca last season and has made 14 international appearances, including featuring in all four of South Korea's matches at last year's World Cup. Lee follows Marco Asensio, Milan Skriniar, and Manuel Ugarte in joining PSG this summer. The capital club has also replaced Christophe Galtier as coach with former Barcelona and Spain boss Luis Enrique. Business group calls for extension of Covid tax relief
The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, one of the country’s largest business organizations, has appealed to the government to extend the tax perks for enterprises affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. In a statement, PCCI president George Barcelon explained that many businesses that could not fully enjoy the tax cut still struggle to recover and that the tax perks would help them recover. “I know there’s a deadline set, but when you think about it, companies have been unable to take advantage of it during the last two years of the pandemic. I hope the government will consider extending it, hopefully within the end of the year so that we can start for the new year,” Barcelona said. The tax relief the government implemented to help businesses during the pandemic through the Corporate Recovery and Tax Incentives for Enterprises Act will expire on 30 June 2023. As a result, the percentage tax and minimum income tax will revert to their original rates on 1 July 2023. With that, the percentage tax, which is currently 1 percent, will increase to 3 percent. The minimum corporate income, which is also currently 1 percent, will increase to 2 percent on the same date. Additionally, non-profit educational institutions and hospitals will return to a 10-percent income tax rate on the said date. The CREATE Act also reduced the corporate income tax rate from 30 percent to 25 percent for large corporations, effective 1 July 2021. The CIT rate will be further reduced by 1 percent annually until it reaches 20 percent in 2027. The CIT rate was reduced to 20 percent for local small companies. The PCCI chief said that most businesses have seen their sales decline in the past two years. He added that some businesses had to close while others have had to incur additional expenses, such as providing transportation for their employees to get to work. “The feedback I had been getting was that in the one and a half years when the law became effective, it was not taken advantage of, and those deductions have not been maximized,” Barcelon said. Madonna hospitalized for several days, tour postponed
Madonna is recovering after falling ill with a "serious bacterial infection" that landed her in an intensive care unit for several days, her manager Guy Oseary said in a statement Wednesday. "Her health is improving, however she is still under medical care," he said. "A full recovery is expected." Oseary said the 64-year-old pop icon's "Celebrations" tour, due to start July 15 in Vancouver, Canada, was postponed until further notice. The New York Post's Page Six website said the pop star was taken to a hospital in the city after becoming unwell. Her global, nearly sold-out tour was billed as paying homage to Madonna's more than four-decade long career, and according to her website boasted 84 concert dates. Stops in the United States were to include Detroit, Chicago, Miami and New York, the city where her storied rise to superstardom began. She was then slated to continue in Europe, with dates in London, Barcelona and Paris, as well as four dates in Mexico City. The Grammy-winning megastar behind classics including "Like a Virgin" has asserted incalculable influence over her stellar career as one of music's top stars. In his statement on social media, her manager vowed to provide more information when available, including a new start date for the tour and for rescheduled shows. In 2020 Madonna underwent hip replacement surgery following an injury sustained on her "Madame X" tour. 'Material Girl' Born in 1958, the Catholic-educated artist headed to New York in the late 1970s with just 35 dollars in her pocket. She scraped a living through everything from nude modeling to selling donuts. Her first big single was "Everybody" in 1982, followed by a string of hits including "Lucky Star," "Borderline," and "Holiday." The 1984 release of "Like A Virgin" propelled Madonna onto the international stage. She followed up in 1985 with another disco anthem, "Material Girl." The early 1990s saw her don infamous pointy cone-shaped bras on her "Blond Ambition" Tour in 1990. She also released a racy book called "Sex," filled with photographs of sexual acts that was released to accompany her 1992 album "Erotica." In the late 1990s her music took off in a new direction, thumping to a new dance-flavored beat on her multi award-winning 1998 album "Ray of Light." In 2003 she grabbed the showbiz world's attention by clinching pop princess Britney Spears in a lingering kiss on stage at that year's MTV Music Video Awards. And she still displays the provocative streak for which she is both beloved and notorious. In January, news dropped of her forthcoming tour in a video nodding to her 1991 documentary "Truth or Dare." In the clip, the Queen of Pop plays the classic sleepover game with fellow celebrities, all with risque undertones. "I am excited to explore as many songs as possible in hopes to give my fans the show they have been waiting for," she said when announcing the tour. Go’s team distributed snacks, masks, shirts and balls for basketball to a total of 167 beneficiaries composed of dialysis patients, persons with disabilities, and solo parents, at the Central Gymnasium in Barangay Poblacion Central. They also gave away watches and shoes to select recipients. A team from the Department of Social Welfare and Development also extended financial assistance. As chair of the Senate Committee on Health, Go also offered additional aid to any resident seeking medical services or treatments. He encouraged them to avail of the services of the Malasakit Center located at Dr. Fernando B. Duran Sr. Memorial Hospital in Sorsogon City. The Malasakit Centers Act was principally authored and sponsored by Go in 2019. To date, 158 such centers have been established and have benefited over seven million particularly poor and indigent Filipinos nationwide, according to DoH. To boost the development of the province, Go, as vice chair of the Senate Committee on Finance, has likewise supported several projects in the province. These include a province-wide water system project. Other projects include the rehabilitation of river revetments along the Managa-Naga River in Bulan; construction of flood control structures in Castilla and Gubat. He also supported the construction of gymnasiums in Barcelona and Gubat; and several road construction and concreting projects in Barcelona, Gubat, Irosin, and Donsol. Go likewise acknowledged local officials headed by Barcelona Mayor Cynthia Fortes and Sorsogon 2nd District Representative Atty. Messi confirms triumphant 2022 World Cup was probably his last
Lionel Messi on Tuesday confirmed he "doesn't think" he will play at another World Cup in an interview with Chinese media after the 35-year-old led Argentina to victory at last year's tournament in Qatar. "I have said several times before that I don't think so, that that (2022) was my last World Cup," he said when asked by China's Titan Sports in a video interview if he might feature at the 2026 tournament in North America. "I will see how things go but in theory, I don't think I will be around for the next World Cup," he added in Spanish in the video published on the app Kuaishou. The seven-time Ballon d'Or winner is currently in Beijing where Argentina will play a friendly against Australia on Thursday. His comments come after he said earlier this year to the Argentinian newspaper Ole that it would be "very difficult" to play at another World Cup. He will turn 39 during the next tournament. Messi last week announced he would join MLS side Inter Miami after his two-year deal with Paris Saint-Germain came to an end. Argentina will play Thursday's friendly against Australia at the 68,000-capacity Workers' Stadium in Beijing. The match is a repeat of the last-16 tie between the teams at the World Cup in Doha, which Argentina won 2-1. With Chinese fans desperate to see the former Barcelona star in action, tickets have been rapidly snapped up despite being sold at prices rising to 4,800 Yuan ($671). WhatsApp debuts one-to-many broadcasting ‘Channels’
WhatsApp on Thursday began letting select organizations try a new feature called "Channels" that lets them broadcast to followers on the popular, Meta-owned messaging service. The debut comes as an array of agencies and organizations grow disenchanted with Elon Musk-owned Twitter in the face of fees, performance problems, and dramatically scaled-back content moderation. Meta described Channels as "a simple, reliable, and private way to receive important updates from people and organizations, right within WhatsApp." A video shared by Meta showed the potential for Channels to keep people up to date on race results, soccer match outcomes, weather, and traffic, and even share cooking or home repair tips. "We think the time is finally right to introduce a simple, reliable, and private broadcast tool," Meta said in a post. Meta said WhatsApp's priority will continue to be private messaging, but that users have been asking for a feature like Channels for years. WhatsApp is known for encryption that protects against snooping. More than two billion people around the world use WhatsApp, according to the platform. Meta said it is exploring the option of making encrypted channels available for groups such as nonprofits or health organizations where that level of security might be needed. Channels was described as a one-way broadcast tool that lets account administrators sent text, photos, videos, stickers, and polls. Global launch partners include the International Rescue Committee and the World Health Organization, as well as the FC Barcelona and Manchester City football clubs, according to Meta. The Silicon Valley tech titan said it planned to gradually expand availability of Channels in the months ahead. Messi future decision drawing near with Barca return hopes fading
With Lionel Messi's time at Paris Saint-Germain drawing to a close, the Argentine forward will soon reveal his future -- but hopes of a romantic return to Barcelona are fading. Messi, who turns 36 in June, is Barcelona's all-time record goalscorer and biggest icon and was forced to wave a tearful goodbye in 2021 at the end of his contract, with the club unable to afford to keep him. Coach Xavi Hernandez has been pushing hard for the World Cup winner to come back, but Messi's camp has told Spanish media no offer from Barcelona has arrived yet. "For me, there is no doubt that if Messi comes back he will help us on a footballing level, that's what I've let the president know," Xavi told Spanish daily Diario Sport. Barcelona is waiting for La Liga to approve a financial viability plan ahead of spending in the summer transfer window. "At the moment it seems difficult for Messi to return to Barca," said La Liga president Javier Tebas in April. "Barca are not like PSG, who have a fuel tap and money for a big salary." La Liga's financial fair play rules currently limit Barcelona to spending 40 percent of any savings made through salary cuts or player sales, because of the club's losses. Even if they bring in enough new income to break free of the league's financial handcuffs, what they can offer Messi would be modest. By contrast, elsewhere Messi will be paid a king's ransom, into the hundreds of millions. A source close to the deal told AFP in May the forward has an agreement to move to the Saudi Arabian league, joining his former Real Madrid sparring partner Cristiano Ronaldo in the Gulf state. [caption id="attachment_139853" align="aligncenter" width="525"] Graphic showing the main statistics of Argentine footballer Lionel Messi[/caption] Risks Many Barcelona fans and coach Xavi would like Messi to add a much-needed coda to a story left incomplete by his shock departure. The forward arrived at Barcelona at 13 years old and departed without a proper goodbye to supporters, who at that point were still shut out of stadiums because of the pandemic. Messi showed by leading Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar that he can still deliver at the elite level when motivated. The forward is the favorite to win the Ballon d'Or and remains sublime at breaking down stubborn defenses, something Barca has struggled with even on their way to winning La Liga this season. His return would be costly in terms of wages but, without a transfer fee, could still represent good value for a club hungry for short-term success. "Reclaiming" Messi's legacy is positive in its own right, ensuring he finishes his career at the club where he spent two decades. The romance of a fairytale return and a chance to seal his glorious chapter in the club's history are tempting, but with Barcelona moving forward and transforming, it could be a mistake for both club and player to turn back to the past. Some believe Barca should not direct a significant chunk of their limited financial resources towards an aging great when there are clear areas where the squad needs improvement. Xavi has said replacing veteran holding midfielder Sergio Busquets, who is departing, is the key to any success next season. Barcelona also needs a first-choice right-back, a backup for striker Robert Lewandowski and a left-winger. Some fans are worried a return for Messi may tarnish his brilliant legacy at Barcelona and hamper the team's progress at the same time. Messi may consider that in terms of his legacy, there is more to lose than gain by returning to Barcelona. French champions PSG host Clermont in their final Ligue 1 match of the season on Saturday, with Messi's future set to take center-stage after that. If you can’t stand the heat…
Our former weather bureau, now with the unwieldy name of Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Administration (really, they should revert to the old, shorter name), or Pagasa, has predicted hot weather in the days ahead. It’s not just your ordinary, run-of-the-mill summer, mind you, but a true blue heat wave. Temperatures are expected to rise to 50 degrees Celsius come May. Now that is hot. When my first-born and I were in Barcelona in July 2019, the temperature was only 47 degrees, but we actually saw a cyclist collapse from heat stroke practically right before our very eyes. I hope he survived the cycle of life. With the weather getting weirder globally, we humans must cope, consistent with the first law of evolution: Adapt or die. Fortunately, since we are supposed to be smarter than other species who have died out (some of us, sadly, only marginally so), experts amongst us have given tips on how to survive the scorching weather. From the web and social media — and as a public service — I have compiled a list of the best suggestions: Keep hydrated. Adults must drink eight to ten 300 milliliter glasses of water or other hydrating products a day. But do not drink like you’ve just walked across the Sahara desert; drink slowly, at the rate of around one drop every two minutes. And when coming from the ambient heat of more than 36 degrees, do not drink very cold water; if the water you are drinking has ice, heat the ice to room temperature. This is because rapid ingestion of very cold water when the body is overheated may cause small veins — called capillaries — to explode. Men, please note that our penises are crisscrossed with capillaries. Those veins you DO NOT want to explode. When all else fails, drink ice cold beer. I know some doctors do not recommend it, but these are doctors who do not drink beer. Between those teetotalers and an expert beer drinker like me, who will you believe? Do not shower, or splash cold water on any part of your body, straight from a strenuous activity just so you will cool down. Let your body cool down naturally first by resting for two or three days before taking a shower. A doctor friend of mine treated a person who shoved ice into his rectum because he was feeling hot; he farted a lot and became very dizzy. An ambulance had to be called since his family got poisoned by his toxic fumes. It is important not to heat up or cool down suddenly. Thus, when coming from the heat outside, do not enter an air-conditioned room or car right away. Wait for your body temperature to gradually adjust for a while. To be on the safe side, do not use your air-conditioned car: just walk to the office or ride the jeepney. At least your body will remain constantly warm for the entire trip. I read that someone disregarded this advice by going inside the walk-in freezer because he was feeling so warm; he was accidentally locked in and almost froze to death. Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing to allow air to circulate within. Dark-colored clothes absorb more ultraviolet rays and make you feel warmer. For both genders — but especially for females, whose concentration of body fat in certain areas traps heat, less is better, including underwear. Thinner clothes are also cooler. Transparency is a very good policy to adopt, more so when it comes to women’s wear. If we follow these recommendations, we should all be able to weather (pun intended) the heat wave with nary an adverse effect. The best proposition, however, is that age-old adage (dating back to 15th century Europe) that if you can’t stand the heat, turn the air-conditioner on. Alcaraz claims back-to-back Barcelona titles
Carlos Alcaraz brushed aside Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets on Sunday to claim a second successive Barcelona title and hammer home his status as likely successor to Rafael Nadal as French Open champion. The 19-year-old world number two won 6-3, 6-4 to bag his third trophy of 2023, after winning in Buenos Aires and Indian Wells, and the ninth of his career. With 14-time French Open champion Nadal sidelined since January with a hip injury and world number one and two-time Roland Garros winner Novak Djokovic struggling with an elbow problem, Alcaraz reinforced his credentials as a major contender to add the clay-court Grand Slam title to the US Open he captured last year. On Sunday, his only blip was dropping serve in the third game of the match. From that point on, Alcaraz powered to a 79-minute triumph against the world number five, his fourth win in four meetings with the Greek. Tsitsipas has now lost three finals in Barcelona after losing to Nadal in 2018 and 2021. "It is incredible," Alcaraz said. "To feel this energy and lift the trophy in Barcelona in front of my family and friends, and most members of my team are here as well. "Playing this level and to lift the trophy in front of them is a good feeling for me." After Tsitsipas broke for a 2-1 lead, Alcaraz won five of the next six games to take charge. His flamboyant shotmaking delighted his home crowd before a solitary break in the fifth game of the second set proved decisive. "Me and my team were talking before the match about staying relaxed," said Alcaraz who raced to the title without dropping a set. "To want to play the tough moments, staying relaxed is the most important part for me. To forget the mistakes, everything and be myself on court. Not to think about all the people watching, but just me, the court, the racquet, and the final." Alcaraz now heads to the Madrid Masters where he is also defending champion. Read: Read!
In anticipation for World Book Day, Instituto Cervantes de Manila, the Embassy of Spain and Intramuros Administration invite visitors on 22 April (from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.) to Instituto Cervantes de Manila in Intramuros to enjoy a bevy of activities promoting the joy of reading. From fiction to non-fiction, poetry to prose, thousands of books will be gathered around Instituto Cervantes’ premises in Intramuros. Día del Libro will feature Manila’s top bookstores and publishing houses that will be selling a wide array of books with 20-percent discount. Following the tradition in Spain, every book purchase comes with a free rose. Apart from the book market, visitors to Día del Libro will be treated to poetry recitals, free Spanish classes, book presentations, street art, games, exhibits, storytelling sessions, and Spanish food. First introduced in Manila by Instituto Cervantes in 2006, the tradition of Día del Libro began in Barcelona, Spain. The tradition is celebrated on St. George’s Day (23 April), during which Spanish people exchange roses and books. This date also honors two of history’s greatest writers—Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare—who coincidentally died on the same day, 23 April 1616. These significant incidents prompted Unesco to declare 23 April as “World Book and Copyright Day” to instill the love of reading among the youth and promote respect for the rights of authors over their works. April is also the birth month of the classic Filipino poet Francisco Balagtas. To honor him, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts declared April as National Literature Month. In the spirit of this year’s celebration, Unesco has chosen the theme “Read for the Future” to emphasize the role of books in shaping our collective future. In a world that is constantly changing, books provide us with the knowledge and imagination to navigate the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow. In this edition, to commemorate the Day of Miguel de Cervantes, Instituto Cervantes is challenging visitors to join a Quixotic attempt: to handwrite Don Quixote de La Mancha. The final hand-written book will be deposited in the Library of Instituto Cervantes. People interested in taking part in the writing of Don Quijote can join on the same day with no prior registration. Participants in the handwriting chain will receive a rose. Through the 2nd Recital of Filhispanic Poetry, Instituto Cervantes is inviting poetry lovers to recite verses written in Spanish by Filipino poets. Visitors will also have the opportunity to meet authors who will be signing their works. Among the writers who will be signing copies are Jessica Zafra, Charlson Ong, Wilfredo Liangco, Katrina Martin, Kannika Claudine D. Peña, or Vince Groyon. Día del Libro is organized by Instituto Cervantes de Manila, in collaboration with the Embassy of Spain in the Philippines and Intramuros Administration. Admission to all Día del libro activities is free. The post Read: Read! appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
