Sunsparks sweep BREN Esports to reach Mobile Legends Bang Bang Professional League-Philippines (MPL-PH) Grand Finals

With Jaypee leading the way, Sunsparks swept BREN Esports to march to their second straight  SMART Mobile Legends Bang Bang Professional League-Philippines (MPL-PH) Grand Finals, Saturday. After dominating BREN in the opening game of the series, the reigning kings of MPL-PH carried enough momentum in Game Two to hand the league-leaders a 2-0 sweep. The top two squads of the regular season figured in a clash at the top side of the river with Kielvj (Esmeralda) taking down Pheww (Popol and Kupa) to kick-start the blood bath. Though BREN was able to shut Jaypee (Karrie) down in the ensuing play, Greed_ (Selena), Killuash (Xborg), Rafflesia (Lolita), and Kielvj was able to stand their ground even without their hyper carry, killing Ribo (Valir), Lastii (Atlas), and KarlTzy (Wanwan), to completely tighten their grip on the match. BREN tried one last attempt to save the game, but Jaypee and the rest of the men in blue made sure to lock onto the victory en route to their second consecutive finals appearance. “Sobrang synced ng team namin, saka ang ganda ng galaw namin, lahat kami gumagalaw sa team namin na hindi lang sa isa umaasa,” said “Jaypee” Dela Cruz. Jaypee spearheaded Sunsparks’ rally with four kills, six assists, and two deaths while Kielvj displayed another consistent performance with norms of six kills, two assists, and two deaths to send BREN Esports to the lower bracket. KarlTzy, on the other hand, was the lone bright spot for BREN with four kills, two assists, and two deaths. Meanwhile, ONIC PH, who booted out SGD-Omega earlier in the day, ended Execration’s run via a 2-0 sweep to set up a lower bracket final match-up against BREN Esports. ONIC PH team captain OhMyV33NUS (Popol and Kupa) was hailed as the Most Valuable Player in Game Two after finishing with a stat line of two kills and eight assists. Dlar (Uranus) provided four kills and four assists while Wise (Hanzo) had two kills and four assists to deny local MLBB star Z4pnu a shot at the grand finals. Execration, who defeated Blacklist International before facing ONIC PH, tallied only three kills in the match – all coming from Bennyqt (Esmeralda). The lower bracket finale between ONIC PH and BREN Esports will happen Sunday at 6:30 p.m. The winner of the match will take the last seat in the finals and face defending champions Sunsparks at 8:00 p.m. in the grand finals. BREN Esports, Sunsparks advance in Mobile Legends Bang Bang Professional League-Philippines (MPL-PH) Season 5

BREN Esports survived a huge scare while Sunsparks took down its arch-rival to advance to the upper bracket finals of the SMART-Mobile Legends Bang Bang Professional League-Philippines (MPL-PH) Season 5, Friday. Entering the playoffs as the top-ranked team of the regular season, powerhouse BREN Esports found themselves in a tight tussle against fourth-seed Execration. Despite falling behind in the early part of Game One, BREN was able to put up a come-from-behind victory to take a 1-0 advantage which Execration eventually tied in Game Two at 1-all. Ch4knu (Grock) once again proved that he’s built for the big stage, invading BREN’s jungle continuously to give Execration the upper hand in the early minutes of the deciding Game Three. Execration managed to put up a commanding 28,482 gold lead compared to BREN’s 21,403 in the nine-minute mark of the game, while also taking the lead in the kill department with a 10-5 score. With the lord already on Execration’s side, the BREN side composed of KarlTzy (Ling), Ribo (Angela), Lastii (Atlas), Coco (Carmilla), and Pheww (Kaja) was able to put up a huge defensive stand in the middle lane, erasing E2MAX (Selena), Z4pnu (Uranus), Hate (Lancelot), Bennyqt (Helcurt), and Ch4knu through a five-man wipe to even the scales. After winning the clash, BREN slowly took control of the game with KarlTzy leading the way. But Execration did not give up just yet, with both Z4pnu and Ch4knu cutting the lanes to further extend the game. However, BREN got its much-needed separation after Lastii outplayed Execration’s initiation by performing a four-man fatal link, leaving Z4pnu the last man standing while also putting an end to Execration’s tough stand. KarlTzy finished with a monster stat line of 24 kills, 11 assists, and two deaths while Ribo led the supporting cast with three kills and a whopping 28 assists to tow BREN Esports to the upper bracket finals. “Siguro [lamang] lang kami sa disiplina, saka sa decision making at experience na lang din po kaya kami naka-lamang sa kanila,” said Karl “KarlTzy” Nepomuceno moments after their Game Three win. Hate ended up with nine kills, three assists, and eight deaths for the lower bracket-bound Execration. Meanwhile, Sunsparks continued its mastery of ONIC PH, 2-1, to take the second seat in the upper bracket finals. Despite dropping the series opener, the reigning kings of MPL-PH were able to bounce back strong, taking the next two games of the series to send ONIC PH to the lower bracket. Jaypee (Ling) once again led the way for Sunsparks, putting up five kills and four assists with no deaths while Killuash backstopped his hyper carry with two kills and two assists. Sunsparks and BREN Esports will go up against one another in the upper bracket finals tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. Execration will face the winner between BSB and Blacklist International while ONIC PH will wait for the result of the match-up between SGD-Omega and ULVL. Both games will also be played tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., respectively. Nike commemorates closure of Nike Hyper Court @ BGC with Community Basketball Event

DECEMBER 12, 2019 TAGUIG, PHILPPINES - To commemorate the closure of the Nike Hyper Court @ BGC (Bonifacio Global City) after two momentous years of serving the community, Nike will hold a community basketball event to be attended by ballers, coaches and local athletes on December 15.   Providing a special place for Filipino ballers to raise their game since its opening in early 2017, the court, which has been recently reclaimed for redevelopment by its landowners, has become the beating heart of BGC. The court has enabled consumers to put in an extensive, cumulative amount of training hours (approximately 377,000 hours) and catered to community building through pick-up basketball or open play, over its existence of two years. The community event will include a series of 3x3 games for local female and male ballers, as well as feature some of Philippines’ most renowned basketball stars in an exhibition shoot out, including Nike Athletes Thirdy Ravena, Trina Guytingco, and Ricci Rivero. Jino Ferrer, Country Marketing Manager of the Philippines said, “Since our Hyper Court launched two years ago at the BGC, it has cemented its position as a thriving hub for Filipino ballers. Our collaboration with Google has ensured players have access to digital coaching and skills training as they step onto the court. We’ve had other collaborations and initiatives that leveraged on the energy of the courts, for example, basketball clinics and grassroots tournaments run by one of our key authenticators and retail partner, Titan; product trials and launches, plus cultural celebratory moments of the sport involving dance and rap battles. Our vision with Hyper Court was to offer ballers of every level a place to feel inspired, hone their skills and realise their full potential. With the other Hyper Courts around, we invite ballers to continue to visit them to raise their game.  “Manila’s passion for basketball is unrivalled and it has been a privilege to see the courts provide a communal place for the surrounding BGC communities to raise their game. Nike will continue serving Filipino ballers with continuous innovation and inspiration, aptly as one of the greatest basketball nations globally” said Ferrer.   The Nike Hyper Court @ BGC will remain in operation till December 31, 2019.  The three remaining Hyper Courts - Ususan Court in Taguig, Scarlet Homes Covered Court in Paranaque and YCL Covered Court in Quezon City – remain in operation, per usual (*Comembo Covered Court in Makati is under renovation).  For more details on Nike Hyper Court, visit Hypercourt.ph. .....»»

Against backdrop of controversy, Red Sox honored by Trump

By Jonathan Lemire, Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump honored the World Series champion Boston Red Sox — well, some of them — at the White House on Thursday, but made no mention of the controversy that shadowed the visit. The team's manager, Alex Cora, did not attend the ceremony after citing his frustration with the administration's efforts to help his native Puerto Rico recover from a devastating hurricane. And nearly a dozen members of the team, all players of color, skipped the opportunity to shake Trump's hand. Meanwhile, every white player on the team — as well as outfielder J.D. Martinez, who is of Cuban descent — attended. The Red Sox repeatedly denied that there was any sort of racial divide caused by the White House visit, which has been transformed from moment of celebratory ritual to hyper-politicized event under Trump. And there was no sign of discord during the rained-upon ceremony on the White House South Lawn. The U.S. Marine Corps band played versions of "Dirty Water" and "Sweet Caroline," two unofficial Red Sox anthems. A derogatory shout about the Red Sox rival, the New Yankees, was heard. Trump was presented with a Red Sox jersey with No. 18 on the back. The day was not without mishaps: The White House first incorrectly labeled the team as the "Red Socks" on its website and then later, in an email, dubbed them the champions of something called the "World Cup Series." But Trump himself stuck to the correct script, honoring the team's dominant run to the title. "Frankly, they were unstoppable. I watched," said Trump, who noted that the squad had now won more World Series titles than any other franchise this century. He laughed when Martinez teased him for being a Yankees fan. The president was accompanied by two of the team's stars, Martinez and pitcher Chris Sale, from the Oval Office and joined the rest of the team assembled under the South Portico. The team's third base coach, Carlos Febles, who is from the Dominican Republic, stood two rows behind the president. And dozens of administration officials and members of government, many of whom hail from the six New England states, stood on the lawn to cheer. Tom Werner, the team's chairman, downplayed the no-shows, saying that it was each player's personal decision whether to attend. "We don't see it as a racial divide," he said after the team received a post-ceremony tour of the Lincoln Bedroom. "I think, to the extent that we can, baseball is apolitical." A championship team's coach rarely, if ever, misses the White House visit, a tradition that began in earnest in 1924 when then-President Calvin Coolidge invited the Washington Senators. Cora had considered attending Thursday's White House event to call attention to the plight of those in Puerto Rico, where Hurricane Maria is estimated to have caused nearly 3,000 deaths. But in the end, he opted not to go. "Unfortunately, we are still struggling, still fighting," Cora said in a statement. "Some people still lack basic necessities, others remain without electricity and many homes and schools are in pretty bad shape almost a year and a half after Hurricane Maria struck. I've used my voice on many occasions so that Puerto Ricans are not forgotten, and my absence is no different. As such, at this moment, I don't feel comfortable celebrating in the White House." Before the visit, Trump defended his stance on Puerto Rico, falsely asserting once again that the territory received $91 billion in hurricane relief money, which he claimed was "the largest amount of money ever given to any state." In fact, Congress has allocated Puerto Rico just a fraction of that figure. The White House has said Trump's $91 billion estimate includes about $50 billion in speculated future disaster disbursements that could span decades, along with $41 billion already approved. Actual aid to Puerto Rico has flowed more slowly from federal coffers, with about $11 billion given so far. Hurricane Katrina in 2005 cost the U.S government more than $120 billion — the bulk of it going to Louisiana. Trump nonetheless told reporters, "the people of Puerto Rico should really like President Trump." Those around the Red Sox locker room stressed that a player's decision to attend was a personal choice and not, in many cases, political. "Politically, it didn't matter who was in the White House. If I have an opportunity to go to the White House and meet the president, I'm going to go," relief pitcher Heath Hembree said Wednesday. "Nobody tried to persuade me. They have their reasons why not to go." For some players, it may be their only chance for a White House invite. It also reflects a larger trend across baseball: A number of players hail from Trump-friendly states like Texas and Florida, while the sport has also seen a surge in Latino players and a decline in African Americans. Having also won World Series titles in 2004, 2007 and 2013, the Red Sox — who also visited wounded veterans at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Thursday — have been honored at the White House under both Republican and Democratic presidents. But the events have taken on sharp political overtones since Trump took office. When the New England Patriots visited in 2017, Trump's first year in office, far fewer players attended than when the franchise won a title under President Barack Obama. After several players on the Philadelphia Eagles and Golden State Warriors publicly declared that they would skip White House ceremonies, Trump disinvited the teams. Trump has also instituted a new tradition for the ceremonies, scrapping gourmet meals in favor of offering plates of fast food to the athletes. The Red Sox were not at the White House for a meal, Werner said. Moreover, the optics of the Red Sox visit are certain to receive additional scrutiny due to the history of racially charged moments for both the team and the city it calls home. The Red Sox, infamously, held a failed tryout for Jackie Robinson before he broke the sport's color barrier. They were the last team in the major leagues to integrate. And an Elks Club in the team's former spring training home of Winter Haven, Florida, invited only white players to events, a practice that stopped only in the 1980s, when black players complained ___ Associated Press writers Kevin Freking in Washington, Jimmy Golen in Boston and David Ginsburg in Baltimore contributed to this report......»»
