MPBL: Binan cruises to sixth straight win, Bulacan triumphs

BIÑAN, LAGUNA -- Biñan City-Luxxe White cruised to its sixth-straight victory after handing Sarangani Province an 18-point beating, 92-74, in the 2019-20 Chooks-to-Go/MPBL Lakan Cup at the Alonte Sports Arena here, Friday. Biñan, who took control of the match right from the get-go, took its biggest lead of the game with 20 points off a layup from James Mangahas, 58-38, in the third quarter. However, the home team saw their lead dwindle as Sarangani's Jun Dimapiles, Jay Cabanog, Hamsar Macantal, and Miko Estrellante took turns in hitting buckets to slice Biñan's lead to just 10 points with almost seven minutes remaining in the game. It was the closest Sarangani Proving could reach, as Macky Acosta weathered the surge before Jed Mendoza stamped the exclamation point with a three-pointer in the 1:55 mark, 85-68, completely taking the fight out of Sarangani. "Consistency lang. Yun lang naman ang hinahanap ko sa mga players, so nagtatrabaho kami sa practice, in-execute namin yung game plan, and blessed kami ngayon," said Biñan head coach Denok Miranda. James Mangahas, who was held scoreless in the first half, finished the game with 18 points and 10 rebounds for Biñan. Acosta put up 14 points, four boards, and three dimes while Mendoza had 13 markers and seven rebounds for the Luxxe White-backed squad, who now stands at 12-14 -- a game behind eight seed Bicol in the Southern Division. Meanwhile, Dimapiles fired 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting for Sarangani, who is still at the bottom of the Southern Division with a 1-25 record. Sarangani Province dropped their fourth consecutive game in the tournament. In the earlier contest, Bulacan solidified their hold of the fourth spot with a 76-69 triumph over the also-ran Parañaque-Yabo Sports. With the victory, the Kuyas upgraded their standing to 18-8, solidifying the fourth place in the Northern Division. "Mas maganda yung game namin ngayon compared sa previous game namin. I applaud my players, especially yung first group namin with [how] they handled the press," said Bulacan head coach Kerwin McCoy. Bulacan came out strong in the second half, leading by as big as 18 points capped off by a step-back jumper from Rev Diputado, 60-42. With the game looking out of Parañaque's reach, the Patriots rallied behind Keith Pido and Jemal Vizcarra in the final frame. Pido drained timely buckets while Vizcarra nailed a three-pointer which sliced the Kuyas' lead to just three points, 63-66, with 5:05 left in the clock. JR Alabanza, Stephen Siruma, and Jay-R Taganas, though had other things in mind. The troika joined hands in a 7-2 spurt before Lester Alvarez stepped on the Patriot's comeback hopes by connecting a three to put Bulacan up by nine points with 1:47 left. Taganas spearheaded Bulacan -- who won its fifth consecutive outing -- with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Bulacan's homegrown star Stephen Siruma and Rev Diputado added 12 points each for the Kuyas. On the other hand, Pido led Parañaque with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field. The Yabo Sports-backed team fell to 8-17 to remain at the twelfth spot also in the Northern Division. In the first game, also-ran Navotas-Unipak Sardines ended Valenzuela-Carga Backload Solutions' playoffs hopes with an 88-83 upset. Down by 11 points in the final frame, ex-pros Val Acuña and Paolo Hubalde did not allow Valenzuela to go down without a fight. The duo led a 14-4 surge to trim Navotas' lead to two points, 74-76, with 3:28 remaining left in the game. Navotas led by as much as six points behind Renz Gonzales and Algin Andaya. But with 59 ticks remaining, Acuña was able to pull Valenzuela to within three with a three-point bomb, 83-86. However, a costly inbound violation from Paul Varilla followed by a technical foul from Valenzuela head coach Ronjay Enrile spelled doom for the Classic. Gonzales, Andaya, and Kojack Melegrito combined for four points from the charity stripe to completely seal the deal. "We want to compete because that's the nature of the sport. Kahit na wala na, sabi ko sa kanila, 'We still have to play the right way," said Navotas head coach Gabby Severino. Jhong Bondoc paced the also-ran Navotas with 19 points and seven rebounds while Melegrito and Gonzales followed with 10 points apiece. The Unipak Sardines-owned squad upped their card to 7-19 in the Northern Division -- good for the fourteenth spot -- while also ending their three-game losing streak in the process. Acuña finished with 24 points built on 16 three-pointers for the Classic, who dropped their slate to 10-16. Former Astro Will Harris joins Nats after losing Game 7

By Jake Seiner, Associated Press Relief pitcher Will Harris is joining the Washington Nationals after they beat him and the Houston Astros in Game 7 of the World Series. Harris and the Nationals have agreed to a $24 million, three-year contract, the team announced Friday. The 35-year-old right-hander dominated with Houston for much of the postseason, starting October with nine consecutive scoreless innings. The Nationals finally got to him late in the World Series, and Harris allowed Howie Kendrick's go-ahead home run in Game 7. Washington went on to win its first World Series. Harris was stuck with the loss. “There’s no bitterness or anything like that from my end other than: Would I have liked it to go a different way? I mean, of course,” Harris said. “But there’s a lot of moments in my career I wish had gone a different way.” Harris acknowledged feeling uneasy when the Nationals first approached him. “That’s the first Game 7 World Series homer I’ve ever given up and I plan on it being the last,” he said. “So didn’t really know how to feel about it and how I felt about the Nationals. “It didn’t take me very long,” he added. “It took me a little while, thinking about it. I was like, ‘Look, man, there’s a lot of baseball left to play.’ And I’m looking forward to doing it in an organization that I feel really comfortable being a part of.” The right-handed Harris had a 1.50 ERA in 68 games for the Astros last season. He had been with Houston since 2015 and was an All-Star in 2016. Harris will try to bolster a bullpen that was among the worst in baseball last season. Nationals relievers blew 29 saves and had a 5.68 ERA, both worst in the NL. Harris is likely to slot behind closer Sean Doolittle as the team's top setup man. Harris filled a number of roles during his time in Houston, including as a specialist against left-handed hitters — unusual for a right-handed pitcher, but a crucial strength as Major League Baseball adopts a three-batter minimum for pitchers heading into the 2020 season. He has no preference regarding his place in the pecking order. He was more concerned with joining another title contender. “A team that’s coming off a World Series championship is definitely going to check all those boxes," he said......»»

Manila shows its class with a 19-point beatdown of Muntinlupa

The Manila Stars - Frontrow outclassed the Muntinlupa Cagers - Angelis Resort, 76-57, in the main game on Friday night as the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Lakan Season returned to action after the SEA Games break. Outgoing stars Chris Bitoon and Aris Dionisio, both drafted in the PBA, topped the scoring charts with 14 points apiece. Although the Caloocan Supremos - Victory Liner did not play, all three games were held in the Caloocan Sports Complex. Dionisio poured in seven second-quarter points as the Stars took a 40-27 lead heading into halftime. In the third quarter a pair of triples from Bitoon plus contributions from Gabby Espinas and Mark Dyke put the game out of reach, bloating Manila's lead to 60-38 at the start of the fourth. Angelis Resort were led by John Ylagan's 14 points but as a team shot a paltry 30 percent from the field. The Manilenos see their slate inch up to 19-4, a half-game shy of Makati. Meanwhile the Cagers remain at 5-19. In the second game of the day Makati Super Crunch turned away a stubborn Navotas Uni-Pak side with a solid fourth quarter to win 67-62 and advance to 20-4. Cedric Ablaza pumped in a game-high 15 points for the Makatizens while Jeckster Apinan was good for 13. Makati were in front for most of the game but when Navoteno Marvin Taywan knocked in a pair of free throws with 7 minutes to go, Gabby Severino's team was within two, 50-48. Ablaza, Apinan, and Rudy Lingganay contributed to a 7-0 run that renewed Makati's cushion. But Navotas hung around with a Mykee Cabahug triple and some big defensive stops. Navotas' will was finally broken when Lingganay drained a triple with two minutes to go for a 64-54 lead that Uni-pak could not overcome. Navotas slides to 6-17 despite 14 points from Cabahug. The day began with Bacolod Master Sardines dismissing the Quezon City Capitals - WEMSAP, 68-63. Homegrown Bacolodnon gunner Pao Javelona led the way for Master Sardines, piling on 18 points to lead his team. New pickup Yankee Haruna helped Bacolod's cause with 14 points. Bacolod led 36-30 at the half and stretched that to 54-46 at the end of the third thanks in part to seven points from Haruna, who wowed the crowd with an alley-oop conversion. A Clark Derige three-pointer pulled QC to within 6, 65-59 with 1:40 to go and a Kim Medina layup cut the lead further. But Haruna and Javelona supplied the endgame points to confirm their 7th win in 22 games. Derige was tops for QC with 20 points as the Caps skid to 9-16 and damage their fading playoff hopes......»»

Yankees to meet with Gerrit Cole, Stephen Strasburg next

By Ronald Blum, Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — Gerrit Cole, the top pitcher on the free-agent market, was set to meet with New York Yankees officials in California on Tuesday. General manager Brian Cashman, manager Aaron Boone and new Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake made the trip to speak with the 29-year-old right-hander, a person familiar with the planning said. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the meeting was not announced. New York is expected to meet Wednesday with free-agent right-hander Stephen Strasburg, the person said. Strasburg and Cole both are represented by Scott Boras. New York selected Cole with the 28th overall pick of the 2008 amateur draft, but he decided not to sign and attended UCLA instead. Pittsburgh took him with the first overall pick in 2011 and agreed to an $8 million signing bonus. Cole was 20-5 with an AL-best 2.50 ERA and a big league-high 326 strikeouts this year for the AL champion Houston Astros, who acquired him from the Pirates before the 2018 season. He is 94-52 with a 3.22 ERA in seven big league seasons. He lives in Santa Ana. New York is seeking to boost a rotation that includes Luis Severino, Masahiro Tanaka, James Paxton and J.A. Happ. Domingo Germán, who went 18-4 this year, ended the season on administrative leave under Major League Baseball's domestic violence policy and could be suspended for the start of next season.
