Iraqi religious leader demands closure of American embassy
Influential religious leader Moqtada Sadr called on the Iraqi government Friday to close the United States embassy in Baghdad because of Washington’s “unconditional support” for Israel in its war with Palestinian terrorist group Hamas. “If the government and parliament do not respond, we will take a different position that we will announce later,” the Shiite cleric, who often criticizes the government, warned on X. On 22 October, Washington ordered all non-essential staff to leave its embassy in Baghdad’s high security Green Zone and its consulate in Arbil, capital of the autonomous Kurdistan region. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has criticized the “Zionist occupation” since Israel began its bombardment of Gaza, calling it a “genocide” of the Palestinian people. On 7 October, Hamas militants stormed into Israel from the Gaza Strip, killing at least 1,400 people, mostly civilians, who were shot, mutilated, or burned to death on the first day of the raid, according to Israeli officials. Israel says around 1,500 Hamas fighters were killed in clashes before its army regained control of the areas under attack. More than 7,300 Palestinians, mainly civilians, have been killed across Gaza in relentless Israeli bombardments in response to the attacks, according to the Hamas health ministry in the territory. Iraqis stage regular protests to condemn the Israeli bombing and in support of the Palestinians. Militia attacks All Iraqi political factions support the Palestinian cause, and like its neighbor Iran, Israel’s sworn enemy, Iraq does not recognize the Israeli state. US forces and their coalition allies in Iraq have been the target of attacks mostly claimed by the group “Islamic Resistance in Iraq” on Telegram channels tied to pro-Iran factions. On Thursday, the Pentagon said there had been 16 such attacks in Iraq and Syria this month, and blamed “Iranian-supported militias.” The Baghdad government is supported by parties that have close links with Tehran, but it is working to maintain relations with the US, which has 2,500 soldiers on Iraqi territory. On Monday, Baghdad called the attacks on American soldiers “unacceptable” and promised to investigate. AirAsia Phl all set for long Undas weekend
AirAsia Philippines on Friday, 27 October, assured all its guests flying to various provinces for the observance of All Souls' Day and All Saints' Day of a smooth and on-time customer journey at NAIA Terminal 2. AirAsia Philippines CEO Ricky Isla and Manila International Airport Authority OIC Bryan Co, along with other airport officials, conducted an inspection of AirAsia check-in counters, kiosks, and boarding gates at NAIA Terminal 2 to demonstrate the airline's readiness for Undas and the long weekend. The airline expects to operate more than 700 domestic flights and carry more than 90,000 guests from 27 October to 1 November. This is 8 percent higher than the figures for the same period in 2022, with all domestic destinations averaging 90 to 93 percent passenger load. In order to effectively handle the influx of guests, four customer happiness counters in addition to the 20 check-in stations were activated. In addition, four self-check-in kiosks are provided to make contactless check-in easier, particularly for passengers who aren't checking bags. "We would like to guarantee our guests a smooth journey this holiday as they travel to their provinces and fly back to Manila. We have activated all and even augmented our ground operations staff to man the check-in counters without breaks. This exercise will also support MIAA's positive on-time performance," Isla said. AirAsia Philippines is closing the month of October with a positive 90 percent on-time performance. "With the commitment of our airline and industry partners, we aim to maintain our strong OTP record from the long weekend rush this year. Our objective is to minimize crowding in passenger and aircraft movement areas through the timely dispatch of flights. We're striving to establish this as a norm at NAIA. Thanks to our partnerships with airlines and government agencies, passengers are starting to notice a positive shift in NAIA operations," shared Co. To avoid being stuck in the traffic rush, AirAsia Philippines is encouraging all its guests to allot extra travel time, at least three to four hours before their flight schedule. Guests are also advised to regularly check their mobile and email accounts or visit the AirAsia Superapp, the AirAsia website (www.airasia.com), and AirAsia social media channels for the latest travel advisories. 4 Pinoys killed in Israel getting aid — Fluss
The Israeli government, through its Ambassador to the Philippines, Ilan Fluss, assured the families of four Filipinos who died when Hamas terrorists attacked Israel that they would receive financial aid. “As long as they are documented and in Israel, then the Israeli government will recognize them as victims of terrorism. For that, they will be receiving financial assistance — their parents, spouses, their children, accordingly,” Fluss told members of the media. The talk with Fluss was organized by the Israel Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines. “We have clear legislation for helping Israelis in this case, as well as Filipinos and other foreign nationals. This will come in the form of financial assistance on a monthly basis, depending on whether they need assistance in education, health care, or even a grant for housing, as clearly stated in Israeli law,” Fluss said. “The aid will be coursed through either the Philippine government or to the families of the victims,” he added. Photos of four Filipino caregivers who perished during the war were displayed during the forum, namely Ilongga OFW Grace Prodigo Cabrera, who chose to be taken away by Hamas to save the 80-year-old Israeli woman under her care; Angelyn Peralta Aguirre, a 33-year-old who was killed along with her patient in Israel; Loreta Alacre, who was shot to death by Hamas while she was on her way back to her employer; and Paul Vincent Castelvi. Meanwhile, with the report that two missing Filipinos are now in the hands of Hamas as hostages, Ambassador Fluss said they are leaving the responsibility to the Philippine government to provide updates. “There are formal channels of communication between the two governments. Our Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquartered in Jerusalem is constantly coordinating with the Philippine Embassy in Tel Aviv, while we are coordinating here with the DFA,” he said. Philvolcs raises Mt. Bulusan alert status
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has raised the unrest status of Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon province from Alert Level 0 (normal) to Alert Level 1 (low-level unrest) following a series of volcanic earthquakes. In its volcanic bulletin, Phivolcs said the Bulusan Volcano Network has recorded 121 volcanic earthquakes since 14 October, 37 of which were volcano-tectonic tremors that are associated with rock fracturing processes at depths of 1-9 kilometers beneath the northwestern and southern slopes of the volcano edifice. Phivolcs has also observed ground deformation and inflation or swelling of the Bulusan’s southern flank since February, and the northeastern flank has been swelling since September. Bulusan also logged an increase in the volcanic carbon dioxide concentration from June to August, and the spring temperature also increased since February. Phivolcs said these volcanic activities indicate that hydrothermal activity driven by deep-seated magma degassing may be occurring beneath the volcano and may lead to steam-driven eruptions at any of its summit vents. It said that Mt. Bulusan is currently in a state of low-level unrest. Hence, Phivolcs warned the public that entering int 4-km radius permanent danger zone should be prohibited and vigilance in the 2-km extended danger zone in the southeast sector must be exercised due to the increased possibility of sudden and hazardous phreatic eruptions from the summit crater and/or lateral vents. Flying close to the volcano’s summit is not allowed as ash from sudden phreatic eruptions can be hazardous to aircraft. People living within valleys and along river or stream channels, especially on the southeast, southwest and northwest sectors of the volcano, should be vigilant against sediment-laden stream flows and lahar in the event of heavy and prolonged rainfall should a phreatic eruption occur.
