Coach Tab expects Dwight Ramos to make his presence felt all over for Ateneo

Ateneo de Manila University will not have a big chunk of its championship core for UAAP 83. Gone are Isaac Go, Thirdy Ravena, Adrian Wong, and Nieto twins Mike and Matt and the Blue Eagles will head into battle spearheaded by the likes of SJ Belangel, Ange Kouame, and Gian Mamuyac. That doesn't mean, however, that the light on the blue and white will be dimming anytime soon as reinforcement has also come in the form of Filipino-American Dwight Ramos. And even now, head coach Tab Baldwin has no doubt about the splash the 6-foot-5 wing will make come Ateneo's title defense. "I think Dwight has a chance to make a significant impact," he said in  the inaugural episode of Coaches Unfiltered. According to the brilliant tactician, Ramos' impact will not necessarily seen by the naked eye as it will be spread out all over the floor. As he put it, "Dwight's the kind of player who has across-the-board impact in a game. He's a very intellectual player. He's not just a great athlete because he also has good skills." He then continued, "He impacts court spacing by how he plays offensively and defensively. He's very, very unselfish. He can play multiple positions." In the end, Coach Tab reiterated that there's a reason why the faithful over at Katipunan is looking forward to the debut of their brand new Blue Eagle. "His impact, I think, is going to be significant, but again, it's not going to be a huge statistical impact as some people might expect or want to see," he said. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

Beast and Baby Beast together in Coach Topex s NCAA First 5

Topex Robinson has been calling the shots for Lyceum of the Philippines University from 2015 to present. Before this, the always amiable mentor was at the helm for San Sebastian College-Recoletos from 2011 to 2014. Through all of that, he has had a hand in the discovery and the development of young talent for his teams as well as the game planning for the opposing rising stars. Among all of those, who are the best of the best for him? Here is Topex Robinson's NCAA First 5, as he told ABS-CBN Sports: CJ PEREZ One phone call - one phone call was all it took for the tides to turn in favor of LPU. When Perez was looking to leave the nest of Ateneo de Manila University, he called one person and one person only - Coach Topex, who discovered and then developed him back in San Sebastian. The rest, as they say, is history as in the first year of their reunion, the 6-foot-2 guard was hailed as MVP all while the Pirates sailed to a historic Finals. CALVIN ABUEVA "The Beast" continued to be unleashed under the watchful eye of coach Topex. Already a force under then-coaches Ato Agustin and Turo Valenzona, Abueva stayed Abueva even as he did not replicate his MVP win in Season 87. And up until now, there is still no end-to-end force quite like one-third of the "Pinatubo Trio." IAN SANGALANG Another third of the "Pinatubo Trio," Sangalang had polished post moves from the moment he stepped into the collegiate ranks. He became an all-around player in his later years in San Sebastian, however, and much of that was thanks to the guidance of Coach Topex. The 6-foot-7 big man's MVP came in the season that went unfinished by Robinson, but there remains no doubt that the latter had a huge hand in the rise of the latter. ROBERT BOLICK LPU was woken up from its dream season in Season 93 by San Beda University - who else but dynastic San Beda University. In particular, it was Bolick who dashed their dreams, dropping seven of his 24 points in the last two minutes of Game 1 and delivering seven of his 22 markers in the last five minutes of Game 2. The only thing unfortunate about the Pirates' transformation into a powerhouse was that it just so coincided with the self-proclaimed bench player in De La Salle University's transformation into "Big Shot Bolick." RAYMOND ALMAZAN (Photo courtesy of Mark Cristino, ABS-CBN News) In the early 2010s, San Beda's challenger in the Finals was either San Sebastian or Colegio de San Juan de Letran. In the same time that Baste was the stage for the "Pinatubo Trio," Letran was home to tantalizing talents such as Kevin Alas, Rey Guevarra, and RJ Jazul. Among them, though, it was only the 6-foot-8 Almazan who stood out enough to be recognized as MVP - and his two-way impact throughout his collegiate career has most definitely not gone unnoticed by opposing coaches. --- Coach Topex did not go into detail as to why he went with these five players. In general, though, he said that these five are "for a fact, the best that the NCAA has produced in the last 10 years." Even better, Robinson said that all of Perez, Abueva, Sangalang, Bolick, and Almazan are, at present, keeping at proving his point as stars in the PBA. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

IATF clears basketball, football to resume training

PBA teams can now return to practice after the government gave the green light for basketball and football training to resume after months of halt due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The two team sports were cleared to resume activities by the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) on Emerging Infectious Diseases according to Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque. “Pinayagan na po ang practice at yung conditioning ng basketball at football sang-ayon po sa request ng PBA at ng iba pang football associations,” said Roque in a press briefing on Friday. The clearance was given to the professional basketball and football leagues with the Philippine Sports Commisision, the Games and Amusement Board and Department of Health drafting the guidelines for training.    The PBA last month submitted a request to the IATF to allow teams to resume training under strict health and safety protocols during the general community quarantine in Metro Manila.     According to the protocol submitted by the PBA, practices will be strictly for conditioning purposes only. Coaches will be barred from attending while teams will be holding practices by batches of four players, with one trainer and one health officer. Tune-up games and scrimmages are not allowed. The training clearance could pave the way for the return of the PBA’s single-conference season late this year as well as for the Philippine Football League’s resumption. Earlier, national sports association leaders from athletics, basketball, volleyball, football, rugby, gymnastics and karate crafted a one-month trial program for athletes to resume training under a strict health and safety protocols. The IATF’s approval for the resumption of basketball and football training also raises hopes for other sports to return to training activities especially another popular team sport in volleyball......»»

La Salle adds another Pampanga s best in Arwind-like Policarpio

De La Salle University is loading up on local talent as its sets out in its quest to return to the Final Four. In particular, the Green Archers are continuing to harvest the fruits of Pampanga's fertile ground, clinching the commitment of 6-foot-4 forward Jonnel Policarpio. Policarpio is a two-way forward who had starred for Mapua High School in the last two years. In the most recent NCAA Jrs. tournament, he continued to show just why he's being compared to Arwind Santos, using his long limbs and quickness to put up per game counts of 19.7 points, 11.7 rebounds, and 3.2 assists. While the 18-year-old remains thankful for the Red Robins for taking a chance on him, he said he just could not pass up the golden opportunity to play with his fellow Kapampangans Justine Baltazar and Encho Serrano in Taft Avenue. "Pagdating ko ng Manila, dream ko na talagang makalaro sa UAAP tapos nandun pa mga kababayan ko kaya madali ko talagang napili ang La Salle," he said. Policarpio, alongside fellow new faces CJ Austria, Joshua David, Emman Galman, and Joshua Ramirez fortify a forward group that already includes Tyrus, Hill, Kurt Lojera, Joaqui Manuel, and Serrano. Unlike Austria and Galman, however, he is already eligible to play in Season 83. There, the proud product of Pampanga vows to go all-out in helping the Green Archers get back to the promised land. "Ibubuhos ko lahat para sa La Salle. Kung anong ipapagawa ni coach [Derrick] Pumaren, susundin ko hanggang sa makuha namin ang championship," he said. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»
