PSC personnel, national athletes test negative for COVID-19

All 200 Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) personnel including some national athletes and coaches tested negative for coronavirus (COVID-19). The PSC announced the good news following the release of the swab-test results on Wednesday. “We are thankful to the Lord that the PSC community is free from COVID-19. We hope and pray it stays that way,” said PSC Overall-in-Charge Ramon Fernandez who also underwent Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) test or swab testing. The PSC conducted RT-PCR tests for PSC staff, along with some members of the national team numbering 112 persons at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex (RMSC) in Manila and 88 at the PhilSports Complex in Pasig City.  The test was conducted in three batches. “We are proud to say that both PSC complexes, which is under a high-risk area since we have venues housing COVID-19 patients, can be declared COVID-19 free. We conducted the test to give the confidence back to the regular workforce, occupants, athletes, and coaches who frequently go to PhilSports and RMSC.” said Dr. Randolph Molo, Head of PSC Medical Scientific Athletes Services (PSC-MSAS) Unit. “We opted for the RT-PCR/swab test over any form of rapid testing since this test is more reliable and reflective on one's COVID-19 status. As of Wednesday, July 8, we can declare that all of the 200 persons who underwent testing are all clear/negative from the Coronavirus. This should help restore the confidence and ease the fears of our staff as we continue to keep PSC COVID-19 free.” added Dr. Molo. After RT-PCR testing, the PSC has also put in place additional security measures by requiring all staff working on-site to submit a Health Declaration Form which was made accessible by QR code or the PSC website. This is screened by the MSAS unit which will grant them a gate pass via SMS once they get cleared. The sports agency hopes this practice will help them keep PSC premises COVID-19 free. The PSC is also strictly implementing health security protocols advised by the Department of Health and the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) in all of its facilities......»»

ONE Championship: Kevin Belingon open to facing Martin Nguyen in a rematch

So far, only three people have been able to defeat reigning ONE Featherweight World Champion Martin Ngyuen throughout his impressive career.  Two of those fighters - Marat Gafurov and Bibiano Fernandes - were reigning and defending champions when they beat Nguyen.  The other one beat Nguyen for the vacant interim ONE Bantamweight World Championship when Nguyen was arguably at the peak of his powers as the reigning ONE Featherweight and Lightweight World Champion back in 2018. That man is none other than Kevin Belingon, who went on to become the bantamweight division’s king later that year.  Belingon has since lost the championship and is coming off back-to-back defeats at the hands of bantamweight rival Fernandes.  Because of that, the Team Lakay star’s main focus now is to regain the bantamweight crown.  But if ONE Championship comes calling with an opportunity at Nguyen and the featherweight title however, Belingon says he isn’t one to turn down another chance at a world championship.  “For me, the priority is still getting the ONE Bantamweight World Title back, but of course I am willing to challenge Martin for the belt if given the opportunity by ONE,” Belingon told ONE Championship. “Still, regaining my belt remains my top priority.”  The Belingon-Nguyen matchup was undoubtedly one of 2018’s best matches, with the two stars going the full five rounds. Belingon cemented his status as the bantamweight division’s top contender with a unanimous decision win over Nguyen, who himself was hunting for an unprecedented third world championship in as many weight divisions.  Since then, Nguyen has been unstoppable at featherweight, taking out former titleholder Narantungalag Jadambaa and Koyomi Matsushima to retain the featherweight championship.  With Belingon already owning a victory over Nguyen, it wouldn’t be surprising for ONE to give him a shot at the featherweight throne.  Belingon believes however that the sequel just be as hard, if not harder than the first meeting.  “If we face each other again, I expect the same tough Martin Nguyen who I faced before, someone who hits very hard and has very good timing,” he said.  If Belingon were to choose however, he says he’d prefer to face Fernandes again.  “If it comes to that? I think I’d prefer facing Bibiano again," Belingon admitted. .....»»

PBA: Japeth, Wong fined P20,000 for viral basketball game under quarantine

The PBA has fined Ginebra star Japeth Aguilar and Rain or Shine rookie Adrian Wong P20,000 each for playing basketball while the National Capital Region was under quarantine due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In a video shared on social media that went viral last week, Aguilar and Wong, together with Gilas top pick Isaac Go and the Japan-bound Thirdy Ravena, were seen playing basketball at a gym in San Juan recently. However, even as the Metro Manila is already under a general community quarantine and the PBA receiving a go-signal to have its teams practice, scrimmages and games are not allowed yet under the latest IATF mandate. On top of the monetary fine, Aguilar and Wong are ordered to under swab testing for COVID-19. A 14-day quarantine will soon follow before taking another swab test to confirm their status. As a third strike, the two will likewise serve 30 hours of community service. PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial, Deputy Commissioner Eric Castro, and PBA legal consultant Atty. Melvin Mendoza were present in the Monday meeting with Aguilar and Wong.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

Centennial team bronze remains as coach Tim s 'lowest point'

Very few will question Tim Cone's status as the greatest coach in PBA history. With 22 championships and two Grand Slam wins, coach Tim has nothing left to prove in the PBA. Cone's place in the history of Philippine basketball is sealed, but did coach Tim ever consider venturing out and winning outside the country as well? "No. Actually never. I never really thought about it, I never applied anywhere else. I never looked to coach anywhere else. I love the PBA," Cone said. Coach Tim made the revelation on the fourth episode of Coaches Unfiltered. "If Phil Jackon would call me and say, 'come coach the Knicks. Come be an assistant to the Knicks.' It's something that from a personal stand or personal growth stand for I'd have to think about," he added. Cone is pretty fine with his PBA career, and no international teams have come calling anyway, so there was no reason for him to try and go anywhere else. Coach Tim's international experience includes him handling the national team twice in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games and in the 1998 Asian Games. Cone says coaching the Centennial Team, which finished with a bronze medal over two decades ago, gave him his "lowest point." "No one's ever called me so there's no reason for me to go anywhere. I enjoyed coaching the national teams. The Asian Games were really hard on me and that's the lowest point of my career in terms of emotion," coach Tim said. "It was losing in the Asian Games, I thook that harder that any championship in the PBA, losing to Korea and China. But no, I haven't really thought of coaching internationally. Never really had the opportunity to coach international. So either way, no," Cone added.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

PBA: Nambatac recalls first practice with Yap: 'Nabulol ako'

From what it looks like, the keys to the Rain or Shine franchise have been handed to Rey Nambatac. The former Letran star truly blossomed in the last PBA season, giving the Elasto Painters some great playoff wins by way of his clutch performances. [Related: PBA: Nambatac continues to prove status as ROS’ top gun] The former first-round pick is getting all the opportunities to accelerate his development, getting the much-needed playing time all while playing with championship-winning veterans. Championship-winning veterans like James Yap. "Nabulol ako, hindi ako nakapag-salita ng maayos," Nambatac said on the PBA's Kamustahan as he recalled the moment he practiced with Yap for the first time. "Si Manong [James] kasi idol ko talaga since elementary pa ko. First day of practice ko, kinausap niya agad ako. Sa isip ko, 'panaginip lang yata to,'" he added. In his rookie season, Nambatac didn't see much playing time behind Rain or Shine's crew of veteran guards. But as he made his transition from college to pros, Yap's early piece of advice to Nambatac sure came in handy as Rey finally got his chance in his sophomore year. "Sinabi niya sakin na pagbutihin ko raw at hindi naman daw ganoon kahirap practice namin kasi professional na nga raw kami," Nambatac said. "At huli niyang sinabi sakin, i-guide niya raw ako para madali akong makapag-adjust," he added.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»
