Tolentino: Our athletes are prepared
Team Philippines will be prepared and ready to win when it marches to the 19th Asian Games that will open on Saturday at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center Stadium in Hangzhou, China. No less than Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino declared their readiness, saying that they will deploy the best and most prepared athletes in the prestigious quadrennial meet that got delayed by a year due to Covid pandemic. Weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, the first Filipino to win an Olympic gold medal, will be at the helm together with other standouts like pole vaulter EJ Obiena, swimmer Kayla Sanchez, and boxers Eumir Marcial, Nesthy Petecio and Carlo Paalam. Although expectations will be tempered on the chances of Diaz as she will compete in the heavier 59-kilogram category, she is still expected to make her presence felt as she had already warmed up in the World Weightlifting Championships in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia after finishing seventh. Even the boxers will be ready as they are coming off an intensive training in India and Australia in a bid to dominate the Asian Games that will also serve as a qualifying tourney for the Paris Olympics. Tolentino said he has high hopes for the 396-man national delegation. “We are very much prepared. Some of our athletes are coming off from their training abroad,” said Tolentino, who will join Philippine Sports Commission chairman Richard “Dickie” Bachmann in leading the send-off ceremony for Team Philippines on Monday at the Philippine International Convention Center. In the previous edition of the Asian Games in Jakarta in 2018, the Filipinos finished 19th after pocketing four gold, two silver and 15 bronze medals. It was the country’s best finish since grabbing five gold medals in 1951 in New Delhi, seven gold medals in 1962 in Jakarta, eight gold medals in 1958 in Tokyo and 14 gold medals in 1954 in Manila. The first batch of Filipino athletes had already left for Hangzhou. First to leave were Olympian Cris Nievarez and the national rowing team composed of Joanie Delgaco, Tammy Sha, Feiza Lenton, Edgar Ilas, and Zuriel Sumintac with coaches Shukhrat Ganiev, Ed Maerina, Nic Jasmin and Con Fornea. The rowers will kick off their campaign in the men’s single sculls, lightweight men’s double sculls, women’s single sculls, and lightweight women’s double sculls on Wednesday at the Olympic Sports Expo Center. Also first to arrive in the bustling city in Hangzhou, the capital and most populous city in Zhejiang Province, are the staff of the national women’s football team, windsurfers and indoor and beach volleyball players. The national booters, popularly known as the Filipinas, are expected to arrive in the coming days in batches as they kick off their campaign on Tuesday. Tolentino said exceeding their performance in the previous Asian Games will already be considered as a success. “This will be the best of the team. We hope to exceed our performance for the last four years,” said Tolentino, who is pinning his hopes on Diaz as well as Asia’s best vaulter Obiena, Olympic medalists Marcial, Petecio and Paalam, and two-time Olympic medalist Sanchez. “We have high hopes for medals in weightlifting, boxing, swimming, and e-sports, with potential surprises in martial arts as well.” The post Tolentino: Our athletes are prepared appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Wes Anderson says lockdown helped inspire ‘Asteroid City’
Wes Anderson's new film puts Westerns, theatre, 1950s Americana, and an alien into a blender for another of his atypical -- and star-packed -- concoctions that he says is about "reckoning with forces beyond your control". As always, "Asteroid City", which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday, features a roster of actors that reads like a Hollywood phonebook. Tom Hanks, Steve Carell, and Margot Robbie -- newcomers to the Anderson family -- join past collaborators Scarlett Johansson and Edward Norton and regulars like Adrien Brody, Jason Schwartzman, and Tilda Swinton in the film. The one-of-a-kind director never seems too influenced by events in the real world, but he told AFP the Covid-19 pandemic did have an impact. "This movie is certainly informed by the most bizarre viral moment in recent history," he said. "Writing it during this pandemic, in the middle of the most locked-down lockdown, we were not sure we would ever go out again -- so I think that's sorta in it. Hanks is intimidating "Asteroid City" is a bizarre and knotty tale set in a remote desert town where a group of child geniuses is gathered for a science competition that is interrupted by an alien visitor, leaving them locked up in quarantine. But in typically convoluted Anderson form, the desert story is presented as a play being performed in New York. Anderson says he wanted to pay homage to actors, who remain something of a mystery to him, even after working with the biggest names in the business. "Many of the actors are my friends now, but nevertheless they are different on set," Anderson said. "Actors recognize something in each other that normal people don't go through -- this thing of being the one who everyone is going to watch. It has this interesting strange effect. It became part of what the movie is about." Working with Hanks was a joy, he told AFP, though he was initially nervous. "He's a wonderful actor but also a huge movie star... it's intimidating. "But his manner on set is: you suggest something and he says 'Sorry, I should have thought of that.' That encourages you to be better because you're empowered by this person with such an aura." Scarlett's smokey voice One person who is glaringly absent is Bill Murray, who has appeared in all of Anderson's films since "Rushmore" in 1998. "Bill was cast in a part but then he got Covid three days before we were supposed to shoot," said Anderson. "We replaced him very quickly with the wonderful Steve Carell who was great." Luckily, Murray's health improved to come to hang out on set for the last of the shoot, he added, and Carell turns in a hilarious cameo as a hotel owner. What Anderson often loves most about his actors is their voice, something he discovered when he cast George Clooney as the lead in the animated film "Fantastic Mr. Fox". "Only when I recorded George did I realize how much it's about his voice? And that kinda applies to the majority of actors -- so much depends on the voice." Johansson, who did the voiceover for Anderson's "Isle of Dogs" (2018) "has this wonderful, slightly smokey voice," he said. Arguably, no director has ever had a style that is so immediately recognizable as Anderson's: the symmetrical playhouse-like sets, bright colors, and deadpan irony. He can't help it. "There's a way I do scenes that is just me," he said. "It's more like a condition than a choice." Matteo Guidicelli livens up GMA-7’s morning show ‘Unang Hirit’
"May karibal na si Atom Araullo sa GMA Public Affairs programs sa kaguwapuhan!" That's the talk in some circles since Thursday, 11 May, when it was announced that showbiz idol Matteo Guidecelli has officially joined GMA Public Affairs, the division where Araullo, Jessica Soho, Mel Tiangco, Mike Enriquez, Cara David and Ivan Mayrina belong. [caption id="attachment_133078" align="aligncenter" width="1734"] PHOTOGRAPHS COURTESY OF GMA-7 Matteo Guidicelli is now a Kapuso.[/caption] It's a division totally different from the network's entertainment TV, which puts up shows like the new Voltes V: The Legacy and Maria Clara at Ibarra. Guidecelli received a grand welcome during the contract-signing and media conference at Vertis Seda Hotel attended by top network executives. GMA Network Chairman and CEO Felipe Gozon welcomed Guidicelli through a video message. The network's Public Affairs produces the newsy morning show Unang Hirit which immediately absorbed Guidicelli as one of its hosts beginning last Monday, 15 May. The same division also produces the well-followed drama anthology Magpakailanman, hosted by Tiango. The division is all set to produce an action-drama primetime series dubbed Black Rider with Guidicelli, a champion car racer for some years before he entered showbiz, joining GMA 7-managed star Ruru Madrid as lead actor. Will the husband of superstar Sarah Geronimo have a chance to do documentaries like the ones Araullo has become famous and highly-esteemed for? Declared GMA Public Affairs' recent statement about their new asset (shared with Viva Artist Agency which still manages Guidicelli): "... And with GMA Public Affairs being the home of world-class and award-winning Filipino documentaries, Matteo will be part of a documentary special about nature." Added the GMA statement: "Viewers should also watch out for Matteo’s upcoming shows in GMA, including exciting projects with GMA Regional TV and Synergy." First day Guidicelli is also slated to play with a team in Family Feud, the quiz show vibrantly hosted by Dingdong Dantes. It's not known yet who Guidicelli will recruit to his team. Would Viva Artists Agency allow Geronimo to join him in Family Feud? Geronimo is still a top Kapamilya star. On his first day in Unang Hirit, Guidicelli turned up in a casual get-up of light blue long-sleeves, white pants and white rubber shoes. His co-hosts welcomed him with what they called "start-up gift packs" ranging from an alarm clock and coffee flask to a motorcycle from Arnold Clavio (the brand must be one of the show's sponsors). The actor greeted the show's viewers in Filipino and in Cebuano, since he grew up in Cebu. He also greeted the love of his life who he said was watching the show even as they stayed up late Sunday night watching Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho. The new man on the house is also a well-known chef, and cooking breakfast for his co-hosts became his first task on the show. He jauntily revealed that at home he really does a lot of cooking "para lang sa asawa," whom he unfailingly greeted with “Hello, Love”. It's great and refreshing to watch a married, handsome and youthful man greeting his wife in the morning five days a week. Guidicelli is now 33, and Geronimo will be 35 in July this year. Let's wait and see how Guidicelli would turn up in the realm of documentaries. Will he just be a glamorous narrator-host or will he go out and get the stories himself? Would he be as daring and fearless as Araullo in his documentaries? Guidicelli has had military training with the Philippine Army. And he was a daring car racer, remember? New public-service program Meanwhile, GMA Public Affairs now has a multi-platform public service program on Sundays, its first to be aired both on TV and on radio, plus other Kapuso platforms. Resibo: Walang Lusot Ang May Atraso is hosted by journo Emil Sumangi, who is a co-host of Kim Atienza and Patricia Tumulak on the daily news magazine show at 5:30 pm. Resibo is Sumangil's first solo TV program after several years of being a field reporter on GMA 7. It was launched on 7 May. The public is invited to reach out to Resibo for complaints and grievances via the hotline number 0917-7RESIBO, e-mail resibo@gmanetwork.com and its Facebook page. They can also visit GMA Action Center, Kapuso Center Building, GMA Network Drive, Diliman in Quezon City. Resibo: Walang Lusot ang May Atraso airs 5 p.m. on GMA, GTV, DZBB Super Radyo and GMA Public Affairs’ Facebook, YouTube and Tiktok livestream. Sinigang slips to No. 42 in world’s best soup list
It’s fair to say that the world’s palate has turned considerably sour against the Philippines’ beloved sinigang, But the country’s all-time favorite comfort food managed to stay among the best soups, at least according to the 2023 Taste Atlas’ Top 50 Best Soups. From the top of the list in 2021, the savory and sour soup – often with pork and vegetables like kangkong, sitaw, labanos and siling haba – slipped to 42nd place in the ranking with 4.4 out of 5 stars. Oh and the other favorite Pinoy soup, bulalo, was close behind at 43rd with the same 4.4 star rating. This year’s champion: Japan’s tonkotsu ramen, a rich, bone broth that packs roasted umami flavor. Like the sinigang and bulalo, tonkotsu ramen can both be a soup and a meal. Taste Atlas also cited the sinigang sa miso variety which is often cooked with fish as its main ingredient with mustasa leaves going with the usual onion, tomatoes all into sour broth. “Nowadays, sinigang mix is available in supermarkets, but enjoying the dish from scratch represents the full experience,” said the database. Of course, cooking sinigang with unripe tamarind fruit makes for an authentic taste but getting the right amount of sourness could get a bit tricky. Bulalo, on the other hand, is measured by the quality of bone marrow and the tenderness of the meat clinging to it after an extended period of time boiling. It usually goes with veggies like repolyo, pechay and potatoes. Nevertheless, it has never reached the prominence achieved by sinigang which last year was 7th best soup, according to the online gastronomic data base, while bulalo was 19th. Floyd Mayweather Jr. says Manny Pacquiao continues to fight because he has to
A little over five years after the Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather Jr. bout, people still wonder if there's ever going to be a sequel. Since that highly-anticipated 2015 bout between arguably two of boxing's biggest stars, Pacquiao and Mayweather's careers have gone in vastly different directions. Following his 12-round loss to Mayweather Jr., Pacquiao beat Timothy Bradley in a trilogy bout, retired for half a year, and then came back to beat Jessie Vargas and capture the WBO Welterweight World Championship. Pacquiao would lose that title to Jeff Horn in a controversial decision in Australia, before bouncing back by beating Lucas Matthysse to become a world champion once again. Just last year, Pacquiao put on two impressive performances in his title defense over Adrien Broner and his WBO (Super) Welterweight World Championship-clinching win over Keith Thurman. Now, at 41 years old, Pacquiao is still in the conversation of top opponents for welterweight stars like Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr. After beating Pacquiao, Mayweather Jr. wrapped his career up with a win over Andre Berto to retire undefeated in 2015. Two years later however, Mayweather Jr. came back and claimed his 50th professional boxing win after defeating UFC star Conor McGregor by tenth-round TKO in a big-money superfight. Save for a three-round exhibition bout against Japanese kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa in Japan on New Year's Eve of 2018, Mayweather has remained retired. So whenever Pacquiao earns a big win or whenever Mayweather does anything remotely related to a boxing ring, rumbles of a rematch always begin to appear. Asked if he was interested in a rematch however, Mayweather sort of shot the idea down. Asked if a rematch against McGregor was on his radar, Mayweather told rapper Fat Joe that he was more interested in fighting guys who has whole countries behind him. "I’m a businessman now. I already proved, years and years ago, that I was the best, period. I’m talking pound-for-pound, I already proved all of that," Mayweather Jr. said. "At my age now, I’m a businessman, so I’m not gonna be out there competing and fighting guys that only got a small city behind them. You got a lot of American fighters that are good, but they got little cities behind them. I’mma fight guys that got a whole country behind them. So, I know I can demand and get what I want to get." "So that's Pacquiao?" Fat Joe responded, looking for clarification. Mayweather Jr. responded by saying that he made more in the McGregor fight. (READ: Pac-Mac at super middleweight? Conor McGregor has interesting response to Manny Pacquiao's birthday greeting) "Listen, I made more with McGregor," Mayweather Jr. said. "My faculties and everything that I got comes first. We just talked about “Your health is your wealth”, and that’s why I got this towel on, I was working out today." "Money" followed up by saying that the difference between himself and Pacquiao is that Pacquiao needs to keep fighting. "Pacquiao fight because he have to. Once again, I fight if I want to, so there’s a difference." Was that a no? Was it a maybe? What did Mayweather Jr.'s statements mean? Mayweather Jr. also hit back at those saying that Pacquiao wasn't in his prime when they met back in 2015. "We keep on saying ‘at our prime’, I’m older than Pacquiao by two years. We keep on saying ‘in your prime’. When I beat Pacquiao, they say he wasn’t in his prime. I’m older than [him]. When I fought Oscar de la Hoya, me and Oscar, we both was in our thirties. They keep on…no matter what happens, it’s never good enough for anyone." Right now, it appears that the 50-0 fighter is happy staying retired, but he did share that he has something cooking alongside Japanese promotion Rizin for this year. .....»»
