Workout buddies keep Valdez, Lazaro-Revilla motivated to stay in shape
Even athletes like Alyssa Valdez and Denden Lazaro-Revilla find it hard to work out at home and stay in shape with most of the country still under community quarantine. Three months – and still counting – of not being able to train, practice, do their usual routine and compete can take its toll. “For me it’s really hard because probably sabi mo nga this is the longest time (na di nakakalaro),” said Creamline star Alyssa Valdez in an interview on the Crossover podcast Tuesday night. “Usually, the whole year naglalaro [ako] with PVL, national team all throughout the year. Training twice a day sometimes.” All sporting events were halted last March as the government put Luzon under enhanced community quarantine in an effort to curb the contagion. “So, sobrang nu’ng start ng quarantine, medyo okay pa eh. May time tayo for rest. Minsan lang ito. You took it positively na, ‘Okay para ito sa katawan ko’,” added Valdez. “But after a while, nu’ng na-extend na siya nang na-extend, parang nade-demotivate ka na rin to workout kasi we don’t know, ‘yung uncertainty kung kailan babalik ‘yung team trainings and tournament.” The newest member of ChocoMucho Lazaro-Revilla shared that although she had experienced taking a year-long hiatus from volleyball before to attend med school, she couldn’t agree more with Valdez’s sentiments. “I have more time on my hands to stay physically fit but then like what Alyssa said, may times na mawawalan ka ng gana because of the situation,” Lazaro-Revilla said. “So much uncertainty and you don’t know when training’s gonna resume, when the tournament’s gonna resume? So there are times na you’ll feel down, parang may times ako na wala akong gana to do anything actually.” Luckily for these ladies, they have the best workout buddies at home. “I think I’m lucky lang din na I’m surrounded by people na sobrang competitive, athletic so napu-push din ako na to really workout every single day,” said Valdez, who during this lockdown is staying at her boyfriend Kiefer Ravena’s house. The former Queen Eagle also has Kiefer’s siblings Ateneo basketball star Thirdy and Lady Eagles libero Dani to workout with. Lazaro-Revilla, on the other hand, trains with husband NorthPort guard LA. “Luckily, I have LA na sinasabayan kong mag-workout,” she said. Lazaro-Revilla added that the Flying Titans check and encourage each other to stay in shape via online meetings. “Buti na lang I have good teammates, we encourage each other when we have team meetings and all that,” she said. Both players stressed that staying in shape and keeping themselves healthy physically and mentally is essential. Especially with the Premier Volleyball League looking at staging the fourth edition of the Open Conference late this year. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

Marco Gumabao confirms Nguya Squad ‘falling-out’ issue
Marco Gumabao opened up about the challenges and problems inside his circle of friends known as the Nguya Squad in a recent interview with Ogie Diaz. The candid conversation on Diaz’s vlog shed light on the actor’s reflections about his friends. Along with Gumabao, the Nguya Squad includes Kathryn Bernardo, Daniel Padilla, Ria Atayde, Khalil Ramos, Gabbi Garcia, Patrick Sugui, Aerielle Garcia, Dominic Roque, Joe Vargas and Bianca Yanga. Gumabao said that there had been problems inside the group, which resulted in some members going their separate ways. “Ako kasi hindi ako nakikisama sa mga problema-problema ng mga kaibigan. Of course, nagkaroon ng falling out sa kanila. I mean, normal naman ata sa magkakaibigan ‘yun,” Gumabao shared. Gumabao stressed that he doesn’t take sides and he doesn’t think it’s his place to publicly disclose the details, despite some miscommunications among his peers. “Pero ako sa totoo lang, hindi ako nakikialam sa kanila.” He added: “It’s not also my position to talk about it. Pero hindi naman siya big deal na sobra pero nagka-falling out. For me, wala ako sa gulo na ’yun.” He knew that his friends have their own feelings and emotions, so it’s hard for him to suggest how his buddies should react or respond to situations. “May kanya-kanyang feelings ’yan. May kanya-kanyang feelings na may mga mahu-hurt, may masasaktan and you can’t tell people ‘huwag mong maramdaman ’yung feeling na ’yan kasi sila ’yun e,” Marco explained. Gumabao is hoping to mend their relationships and find peace in the future despite the challenges. “Sana magkaayos kasi hindi naman siya sikreto, ’di ba? Kumbaga, it’s an open secret na ganun. But yeah, for me, sana magkaayos lahat,” he concluded. The post Marco Gumabao confirms Nguya Squad ‘falling-out’ issue appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Forbes Asia fetes start-up enabler
Packworks, a local startup that provides a business-to-business open platform to sari-sari stores was included in Forbes Asia’s 100 to Watch List 2023. The list recognizes companies and startups that are “targeting underserved markets or applying new technologies.” Packworks is one of only nine companies from the Philippines that have made it to the list and one of the nine listed companies from the e-commerce and retail industry. According to Forbes Asia, the final 100 were selected from over 550 submissions and nominations from accelerators, incubators, SME advocacy organizations, universities, and venture capitalists across the region. “We are honored to be recognized by Forbes Asia and included in their ‘100 to Watch List’ for 2023. At Packworks, our mission has always been to empower sari-sari stores through our open platform, and this recognition underscores our commitment to driving innovation in the e-commerce and retail industry,” Packworks co-founder and CEO Bing Tan said. “To every sari-sari store owner, partner, and dedicated team member who has believed in and journeyed with us — this recognition is as much yours as it is ours,” he added. To qualify for the list, companies must have an annual revenue not exceeding $50 million, and have received no more than $100 million in total funding as of 7 August 2023. Tough criteria Metrics such as a positive impact on the region or industry, a track record of strong revenue growth or ability to attract funding, promising business models or markets, and a persuasive story were among the considerations. Packworks will represent the Philippines at the Startup World Cup 2023 in Silicon Valley, USA, in December. It won Ignite 2022’s Startup World Cup x Wildfire Pitch competition in October last year. Packworks was established in 2018 out of a passion project by Tan alongside co-founders Ibba Bernardo and Hubert Yap. The trio started as motorbike buddies before forming a company delivering solar panels to provinces and far-flung places across the country. During their excursions, they saw firsthand the challenges brought by limited access for sari-sari store owners and embarked on developing an application for small store businesses to have a one-app stop for all their needs. Launched as a solution for multinational companies with only a handful of sari-sari store partners, Packworks has rapidly expanded as a platform to ease the supply chain ecosystem, from small sari-sari store owners to wholesalers, distributors, and renowned companies and brands. With about 75 percent of sari-sari stores owned by women, Packworks also works to empower female entrepreneurs. The company raised $2 million in seed funds in August last year and is backed by ADB Ventures, Arise, CVC Capital Partners — Fast Group, IdeaSpace Foundation and Techstars. Bottoms up!
Meaning: An encouragement to drink or to finish one’s drink. Did you know that the term “Bottoms up” originated in an era when English sailors were encouraged to drink? There is a popular story behind its history where English sailors used to be bribed with coins to join the navy and many times, they would be tricked into joining by being given a beer with a coin at the bottom of the glass. Sounds fun, right? There is a reward after drinking a reward. I can drink to that! According to the legend, men began to say “Bottoms up” to their drinking buddies so they could see if there were coins in the glasses before the drinks were finished. Now, in modern times, most people say, “Bottoms up!” to cheer their buddies when drinking alcohol, having fun, and celebrating an event. It used to be a happy term, but did you know that it could also be a negative phrase? In some situations, people say “Bottoms up!” to encourage drinking something unpleasant. For example, you need to drink your medicine despite its bitter so someone will say to you “Bottoms Up!” until you finish it. Yes, my dear readers, how are you after the long weekend? Have you recharged and had fun together with friends and families? Nothing wrong with having fun, of course, as long as it does not hurt anyone or as long as it is after working hours. Speaking of “Bottoms up!,” it has been all over the news recently, have you seen it? In case you haven’t, then let me fill you in on some spicy information. Last week, on 16 August, acting port managers and seven other officials of the Philippine Ports Authority assigned to the Port Management Office of Bohol were caught on CCTV drinking inside the PPA office multipurpose hall to celebrate the acting port manager’s birthday. That’s not the worst of it. Aside from drinking on the premises of a government facility, they used the office chairs and tables (supposedly for meetings and official functions) for their drinking session with lots of bottles of alcohol, an invited band, and the attorneys and port police dancing as shown on the CCTV footage. Like I said, having fun is not bad at all, celebrating birthdays is okay, and being together with friends or co-workers on a special day is totally fine.... but not to the extent of using government facilities and resources to fuel that fun. These eight officials of PPA Bohol, including the acting port manager/birthday celebrator, two legal attorneys, four port police officials, and the Port Services Department Bohol head, were removed from their posts pending an investigation. Recently, PPA General Manager Jay Santiago issued a memorandum reiterating Memo Circular No. 013-2023, otherwise known as the “Strict prohibition on the consumption of alcoholic beverages in the workplace.” The memorandum was first issued in 2018 under the same management after the former DoTr officials issued a directive prohibiting alcoholic beverages in the workplace — all in accordance with Civil Service Commission Memorandum No. 4, series of 2011, stating the policy guidelines on the prohibition of alcoholic beverages among government officials and employees. See? No government official or employee is excused for drinking inside a government office. An official is expected to serve the public, to give assistance, to make their lives easier, to be of great service to the community, and not to be another source of conflicts and problems within their areas of responsibility. Ports operate 24/7, thus there is no need to be complacent at any moment. Thank goodness for the high-tech surveillance system of the PPA, serious negligence and deliberate negative acts like these can be monitored from the head office. To be fair, drinking has long been the center of workplace culture, whether for socialization or to gain each other’s trust. In fact, in China, drinking with business partners serves as a moral contract in which the potential work partners get drunk together until they become friends and gain each other’s trust and professional interests. But we are not in China, we are here in our beloved country striving to always change to rise from the difficulties of being in a third-world country. A lot of people, or even more deserving people, need jobs, hence, any job, especially a government position, should not be taken for granted and abused. Now this brings us to a question: Does alcohol have a place at work and should it? Your guess is as good as mine. Let us not normalize alcohol drinking at work or the pressure to participate. It may seem like a nice gesture to subsidize alcohol at events to build camaraderie, but it is not necessary in carrying out government functions, especially inside office areas. There you go, fellow boat riders, yes, we either sink or swim all together because we are in the same boat, but this time we’re not in the same boat because no one wants to be bonding with booze and boss in an office setup on a weekday. Smells like a “Bottoms up!” disaster. Yikes! The post Bottoms up! appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Talon’ Trafficking Victims Rescued in Cebu
The Bureau of Immigration (BI) at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) intercepted five suspected victims of human trafficking on 8 July. According to the BI-CIA, the said victims, who were attempting to board their flight via Philippine Airlines bound for Thailand under the pretense of being tourists, were later revealed to be bound for the United Arab Emirates. Because of the contradictions in their claims, the immigration officer began to wonder about the travelers' motivations. They stated they were going on vacation, and one of the travelers' buddies and a sibling were supposedly paying for it. The victims, however, acknowledged their true location after further inquiry during a subsequent examination. Bureau of Immigration (BI) Commissioner Norman Tansingco said that this is a common scheme of human trafficking, wherein victims are made to go to a third country before flying out to the final port of destination. Tansingco stressed the significance of immigration officials' diligence and awareness in spotting potential instances of human trafficking and stopping such unlawful actions. The victims were immediately turned over to the MCIA Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT) for assistance in filing charges against their recruiter. The Bureau of Immigration urges the public to report any suspicious activities or individuals related to human trafficking to the authorities. The BI chief also said that this is a recurring scheme that uses visa-free countries as a jump-off point to other destinations, and they urge all aspiring overseas workers not to accept such offers and report attempts at illegal recruitment to local authorities. 5 iconic songs on mind game
These classic tunes use poker metaphors to explore the ups and downs of life and love The game of poker has long been a source of inspiration for musicians, with its high-stakes drama and thrilling unpredictability lending itself perfectly to the storytelling power of song. From classic country tunes to hard-hitting hip-hop and modern pop hits, there are many examples of songs that reference poker or use the game as a metaphor for life’s ups and downs. Let’s take a look at five of them. “Poker Face” by Lady Gaga “Poker Face” is a synth-pop and dance-pop song by American singer Lady Gaga, released in 2008 as the second single from her first studio album, “The Fame.” Co-written by Lady Gaga and RedOne, its lyrics are about Lady Gaga’s bisexuality and her ability to maintain a “poker face” in relationships. The term “poker face” is often used in card games to describe a player’s ability to keep a straight face during games to avoid revealing anything about all the cards they hold. In the song, Lady Gaga compares her romantic relationships to a poker game, suggesting she can keep a calm and collected exterior while holding all the cards. The song has since become one of Lady Gaga’s biggest hits and is considered a pop classic. “Queen of Hearts” by Juice Newton “Queen of Hearts” is a classic song originally written by Hank DeVito and first recorded by Dave Edmunds in 1979. However, Juice Newton’s 1981 rendition eclipsed the original in popularity, making it her signature song. The song’s lyrics are cleverly crafted to incorporate poker metaphors and terminology. The “Queen of Hearts” in the song refers to the Queen playing card in a deck, which is a very important card in poker. Meanwhile, the lyrics paint a picture of a woman who is unpredictable and unreliable, just like the game of poker, and hard to resist, just like the temptation to play another hand. “Queen of Hearts” has been covered by several other artists. It remains a popular song and a staple of classic rock and country radio stations, its lyrics and catchy tune ensuring that it continues to be enjoyed by many. “Luck Be A Lady” by Frank Sinatra “Luck Be a Lady” is from the 1950 musical Guys and Dolls. The musical’s protagonist, Sky Masterson, is a gambler hoping for a lucky hand to win a bet. His impassioned plea to Lady Luck approximates a poker player’s reliance on chance. Sky references cards, dealers and the hand he’s dealt — essential components of any poker game — throughout the song. Frank Sinatra’s brilliant performance of “Luck Be a Lady” perfectly captures the spirit of the song and highlights the similarities between love and the game of poker. Smooth and soulful, his version remains the standard against which all others are measured. “The Gambler” by Kenny Rogers Released in 1978, this song tells the story of an encounter between the narrator and a gambler that takes place on a train. The Gambler offers the narrator some life advice, using the game of poker as a metaphor. The lyrics offer advice on how to make good choices and take calculated risks, and they have resonated with audiences for decades. “You’ve got to know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em” are arguably the most famous lines from the song, and they refer to the two basic strategies in poker. Another line goes, “Know when to walk away, know when to run.” This line refers to the importance of knowing when to quit a game. Sometimes, it’s better to cut your losses and leave the table. If you continue to play, you risk losing more. Finally, the song says, “Every gambler knows that the secret to surviving is knowing what to throw away and knowing what to keep.” This line emphasizes the importance of strategy in poker. It’s not all about luck — you need to know which cards to keep and which to discard to increase your chances of winning. “Pokerface” by Ghostface Killah feat. Shawn Wigs This song is about the World Series of Poker and the skills required to succeed in that tournament. Its first verse describes how even professional poker players can struggle with pressure during an important game — a sentiment echoed in the chorus, where the importance of folding and not pushing too many chips into the pot is stressed. In the second verse, featured artist Shawn Wigs raps about playing a cash game, where he uses his ability to bluff and superior knowledge of poker to win a huge pot. The song ends with the lines, “He beat me…straight up, pay him, pay Shawn Wigs his money,” emphasizing the high stakes of poker and the importance of paying out winnings to the victor. Whether you’re a seasoned card player or a casual listener, these poker-themed hits will surely get your heart racing and your toes tapping. They’re available for streaming on most services, so you can put them on next time you and your buddies get together for a hand or two!
