MPBL: Binan cruises to sixth straight win, Bulacan triumphs

BIÑAN, LAGUNA -- Biñan City-Luxxe White cruised to its sixth-straight victory after handing Sarangani Province an 18-point beating, 92-74, in the 2019-20 Chooks-to-Go/MPBL Lakan Cup at the Alonte Sports Arena here, Friday. Biñan, who took control of the match right from the get-go, took its biggest lead of the game with 20 points off a layup from James Mangahas, 58-38, in the third quarter. However, the home team saw their lead dwindle as Sarangani's Jun Dimapiles, Jay Cabanog, Hamsar Macantal, and Miko Estrellante took turns in hitting buckets to slice Biñan's lead to just 10 points with almost seven minutes remaining in the game. It was the closest Sarangani Proving could reach, as Macky Acosta weathered the surge before Jed Mendoza stamped the exclamation point with a three-pointer in the 1:55 mark, 85-68, completely taking the fight out of Sarangani. "Consistency lang. Yun lang naman ang hinahanap ko sa mga players, so nagtatrabaho kami sa practice, in-execute namin yung game plan, and blessed kami ngayon," said Biñan head coach Denok Miranda. James Mangahas, who was held scoreless in the first half, finished the game with 18 points and 10 rebounds for Biñan. Acosta put up 14 points, four boards, and three dimes while Mendoza had 13 markers and seven rebounds for the Luxxe White-backed squad, who now stands at 12-14 -- a game behind eight seed Bicol in the Southern Division. Meanwhile, Dimapiles fired 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting for Sarangani, who is still at the bottom of the Southern Division with a 1-25 record. Sarangani Province dropped their fourth consecutive game in the tournament. In the earlier contest, Bulacan solidified their hold of the fourth spot with a 76-69 triumph over the also-ran Parañaque-Yabo Sports. With the victory, the Kuyas upgraded their standing to 18-8, solidifying the fourth place in the Northern Division. "Mas maganda yung game namin ngayon compared sa previous game namin. I applaud my players, especially yung first group namin with [how] they handled the press," said Bulacan head coach Kerwin McCoy. Bulacan came out strong in the second half, leading by as big as 18 points capped off by a step-back jumper from Rev Diputado, 60-42. With the game looking out of Parañaque's reach, the Patriots rallied behind Keith Pido and Jemal Vizcarra in the final frame. Pido drained timely buckets while Vizcarra nailed a three-pointer which sliced the Kuyas' lead to just three points, 63-66, with 5:05 left in the clock. JR Alabanza, Stephen Siruma, and Jay-R Taganas, though had other things in mind. The troika joined hands in a 7-2 spurt before Lester Alvarez stepped on the Patriot's comeback hopes by connecting a three to put Bulacan up by nine points with 1:47 left. Taganas spearheaded Bulacan -- who won its fifth consecutive outing -- with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Bulacan's homegrown star Stephen Siruma and Rev Diputado added 12 points each for the Kuyas. On the other hand, Pido led Parañaque with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field. The Yabo Sports-backed team fell to 8-17 to remain at the twelfth spot also in the Northern Division. In the first game, also-ran Navotas-Unipak Sardines ended Valenzuela-Carga Backload Solutions' playoffs hopes with an 88-83 upset. Down by 11 points in the final frame, ex-pros Val Acuña and Paolo Hubalde did not allow Valenzuela to go down without a fight. The duo led a 14-4 surge to trim Navotas' lead to two points, 74-76, with 3:28 remaining left in the game. Navotas led by as much as six points behind Renz Gonzales and Algin Andaya. But with 59 ticks remaining, Acuña was able to pull Valenzuela to within three with a three-point bomb, 83-86. However, a costly inbound violation from Paul Varilla followed by a technical foul from Valenzuela head coach Ronjay Enrile spelled doom for the Classic. Gonzales, Andaya, and Kojack Melegrito combined for four points from the charity stripe to completely seal the deal. "We want to compete because that's the nature of the sport. Kahit na wala na, sabi ko sa kanila, 'We still have to play the right way," said Navotas head coach Gabby Severino. Jhong Bondoc paced the also-ran Navotas with 19 points and seven rebounds while Melegrito and Gonzales followed with 10 points apiece. The Unipak Sardines-owned squad upped their card to 7-19 in the Northern Division -- good for the fourteenth spot -- while also ending their three-game losing streak in the process. Acuña finished with 24 points built on 16 three-pointers for the Classic, who dropped their slate to 10-16. MPBL: Cunanan scores 20 to lead Imus to impressive home win

The visitors were without forward Jhong Bondoc, who watched the game in street clothes from the bench. Imus exploited his absence brilliantly, out-assisting their foes 31-13 and never really looking like they would lose. "Sabi ni coach dumepensa lang kami ng maayos at yung opensa, darating," said Jojo Cunanan, who copped best player of the game honors with a 20-point night highlighted by six triples from nine attempts. Led by Jeric Nacpil's 12 points, Luxxe Slim carved out a 50-33 lead at the half. A variety of Navoteños got on the scoresheet in the third and fourth quarters but Cunanan dropped three triples, two in the fourth, as Imus skated to an easy win in front of their fans to go to 6-19. The Bandera played their second game in three days, losing to Biñan on Saturday. Navotas falls to 5-20 despite 11 points from Osama Abdurasad and 10 from Kojak Melegrito. Imus were also without their talisman, Gerald Anderson, who had prior commitments and missed a rare Imus home game in their newly-renovated arena. In the second game, Bacolod Master Sardines took down the Bicol Volcanoes LCC Stores, 76-72, in overtime. Bacolod homegrown star Pao Javelona sent the game into the extension with a daring driving lay-up down the throat of the Bicolano defense with ninr ticks left for 70-70. There was exactly one field goal in overtime, a driving lay-up off the glass from Edgar Charcos that gave Master Sardines a 74-72 lead with 40 seconds remaining. After Volcano Alwyn Alday muffed a fast break lay-up, Javelona iced the game with two free throws. Ramil Tansingco led Bacolod with 15 points as the Sardine men go to 8-15. Alday had a game-high 23 points for Bicol but LCC Stores shoots just 31% from the field and do themselves no favors in the playoff race, stumbling to 13-12. The day began with the Iloilo United Royals shrugging off a gritty Rizal Xentro Malls Golden Coolers team, 71-65. The Royals led by as much as 16 in the third but the Golden Coolers hacked their way back into the game with the steady play of Rommel Saliente. A three-pointer from Kelvin Gregorio pulled them to within six, 56-50, going into the final segment of the game. A Jordan Rios layup with just under four minutes meant Rizal had their nose in front, 63-62. But Jerson Prado scored four straight points and Al Tamsi converted a big triple for a 69-65 lead with a little over a minute to go. United ran out winners to improve to 15-8 despite the absence of center Jay Javelosa, who is out for four weeks with a broken hand. Tamsi led Iloilo with 16 points while Gregorio's 15 markers paced Xentro Malls, who drop to 6-17......»»

MPBL: Mag-isa s superb all-around night lifts Muntinlupa

The Muntinlupa Cagers - Angelis Resort may have found a spark to turn around their subpar season by beating the Biñan City Laguna Krah Heroes 102-90 on Tuesday night's main game of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Lakan Season. Playing at home in the Muntinlupa Sports Complex, the Muntinlupenos gave their home fans plenty to cheer about thanks to 21 points from Ryusei Koga and 20 apiece from Jamil Ortuoste and Edzel Mag-isa. "Hindi niyo kami sinukuan kaya hindi rin namin kayo sinukuan. Inaalay namin ang panalong ito sa inyo," said best player of the game Mag-isa after the game, speaking to the Cagers fans. Muntinlupa gets a badly-needed win that brings them to 4-13 for the season while Laguna skids to 6-10. Leading 48-42 at the half, the Cagers opened up the floodgates in the third with a 36-point barrage that featured five triples from Ortuoste, Koga, and Biboy Enguio. Muntinlupa was brilliant from three-point range, hitting 12 of 20 for a world-class 60-percent clip. Munti led by 16 at one point but at the start of the fourth were up 74-61. In the fourth, a lay-up by erstwhile playing-coach Dave Moralde lifted the Cagers to an 18-point advantage, 93-75 with six minutes left. Binan cut the lead down in the end with triples from Allan Mangahas, Macky Acosta, and Paolo Pontejos, but there would be no denying the Cagers, who get a first win for new coach Bonnie Garcia. Mangahas, a former Cager, led all scorers with 25 points. In the early evening joust the Parañaque Patriots - Yabo Sports leaned on a big third quarter to down Bacolod Master Sardines 82-78. Jemal Vizcarra produced 19 points to lead Yabo Sports, who defibrillate their campaign and jump back into the playoff hunt at 6-10. Bacolod, despite new signings, drop to 6-9. Bacolod had a slim 36-35 lead at the half but the Parañaqueños erupted in the third to take command of the contest. A Vizcarra triple with 2 minutes left in the period keyed an 11-0 run that spilled over into the fourth quarter and gave Paranaque a 67-54 advantage. Paolo Javelona and Jerick Cañada found some shooting rhythm in the fourth quarter to keep Bacolod in the game, but when James Abugan hit a driving layup with 42 seconds left for an 81-73 lead, the Patriots were assured of the victory. Javelona led Bacolod with 20 points while new signing Jessie Saitanan chipped in 12 points for Master Sardines. In the first game of the day San Juan Knights - Go For Gold outclassed Bicol Volcanoes LCC Stores 98-69. John Wilson was his usual imperious self with 23 points as the defending champs go to 15-1. The Knights were hot from the opening whistle, striding ahead 20-7 in the first quarter with Michael Ayonayon and Andoy Estrella providing much of the offense. There was little let up in the second quarter as San Juan took a 41-21 lead into the dressing room. In the third a 7-0 Bicol run drew the Volcanoes within 16, 46-30, but a 13-2 burst by the Knights, featuring a pair of Wilson treys, restored order. Bicol never seriously threatened after that as the benches got plenty of burn in the final segment. LCC Stores dives to below .500 again with an 8-9 slate. Leading the way in scoring for them was Alwyn Alday with 14 points. San Juan were lethal from outside, hitting 14 of 32 three-pointers, or 43 percent......»»

MPBL: Parañaque rebounds with gutsy road win at Batangas

The Parañaque Patriots - Yabo Sports picked up a morale-boosting win on Tuesday, edging past Batangas City Athletics - Tanduay, 61-57, in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Lakan Season. Despite enjoying the support of a partisan hometown crowd at the Batangas City Sports Center, Rum City lost at home for the first time in four games and drop to 6-4. Their three-game win streak is also now history. Amazingly the loss was against Yabo Sports, who were embarrassed by Bacoor by 53 points last week. Jemal Vizcarra's 15 points was tops for Mike Saguiguit's team, who move up to 4-9 and see a four-game skid come to an end. Batangas' punchless offense amassed just 21 points in the first half, including just six in the second quarter, against 28 from Parañaque. In the third, the visitors continued to impress with treys from Josh Almajeda and Vizcarra to lead 47-37 heading into the final segment of play. Parañaque was hot early on in the fourth and a James Patrick Abugan jumper with six minutes left gave them what looked like a solid 58-43 advantage. But an Arvin Tolentino triple keyed a furious 12-0 run that pulled the Athletics to within three, 58-55, and ignited their home crowd. Vizcarra played the role of fireman with a lovely step-back jumper to restore a five-point cushion, but that bucket was negated by a jumper from Jhaymo Eguilos with half a minute left. However, in a turnover-riddled contest it was only fitting that giveaways settled it. Batangas forward Jason Melano relieved Vizcarra of the ball and handed off to Jeff Viernes, but in an instant Viernes himself had the leather pilfered by Almajeda. A free throw from Vizcarra closed out the scoring. Neither club took care of the ball. Parañaque commited 16 turnovers while Batangas City coughed up possession 21 times. "Sabi ni coach, walang bibitaw. It was time to bounce back para ipakita na kahit papaano Kaya namin," said Vizcarra after. In the second game the Pasay Voyagers kept minnows Nueva Ecija ForestLake at bay with a 75-69 triumph. The game was a milestone for Voyager Dhon Reverente, who joined the MPBL's 500-point club with a 10-point, 11-rebound, and 4-assist gem of a performance. Jan Jamon's 13 points was the best for Pasay while Levi de la Cruz and Andrey Armenion led Nueva Ecija with 13 apiece. Pasay had a commanding 54-42 lead after three quarters but the Ecijanos made a game of it with 4 triples in the final quarter, including two by De La Cruz. The second drew ForestLake to within four, 73-69 with still 36 seconds left to play. Axel Iñigo settled it for the Voyagers with two free throws. Pasay is now at 7-5 while Nueva Ecija continues to struggle at 2-9. In the afternoon matchup Rizal Golden Coolers - Xentro Mall delivered in the endgame to beat Bacolod Master Sardines, 89-84. Golden Cooler Joemari Lacastesantos provided five of his 9 points in the final few possessions to help secure the win. He was responsible for the last two baskets of the game. Bacolod squandered a 30-point effort from Jopher Custodio and a 20-point game from Paolo Javelona. Custodio was superb, but only accounted for one field goal and four points in the last quarter. Rizal on the other hand was a model of balanced scoring, with JV Vidal leading the way with 15 points, and three other starters also reached double figures. Xentro Malls trumped Master Sardines 32-17 in bench scoring. JV Gayoso's Rizal picks up it's 3rd win in 11 outings while Bacolod slides to 4-8......»»

MPBL: Cabahug thrills home fans in Cebu win, Pasig set three-point record

Cebuano hoops fans had a night to remember on Saturday when their Cebu Sharks Casino Ethyl Alcohol turned on the afterburners in the second half to corral the Muntinlupa Cagers Angelis Resort, 79-62, in the Hoops Dome in Lapu-Lapu City. The Sharks gave the visitors to Lapu-Lapu City a welcome similar to the one shown by Lapu-Lapu himself on Magellan centuries ago as a massive third quarter outburst put the game out of reach. Down 41-34 at the half, Cebu found another gear on both sides of the ball to outscore Muntinlupa, 28-9 in the third on the back of nine points from Patrick Cabahug and eight from Harold Cortes. In those 10 minutes the Cagers scored exactly one field goal, a triple from Ryusei Koga. It was also in that period where Shark Rhaffy Octubre and Cager Mark Guillen were ejected after scuffling. Muntinlupa continued their desultory shooting into the final quarter as Cebu ran out big winners in front of a large Cebuano crowd. "Must-win ito kase home game, (ang panalong ito) para sa lahat ng taga-Cebu," said Cabahug, who topscored with 26 points in front of his father, Boy. Cebu advances to 4-5 while Munti drops to 3-7. In the day's opener, the Pasig Sta. Lucia Realtors carpet-bombed the Parañaque Patriots Yabo Sports from beyond the arc enroute to a 100-87 win. Twenty-one Pasig triples from 41 attempts is a new league record, as is the combined 27 treys from both clubs. Realtor Jeric Teng was the most prolific of the long-range snipers, going 9 of 13 from three-point land and finishing with 30 points. Argel Mendoza was another Pasig gunner in lethal mode, hitting 6 from 14 as he piled on 28 points. But the Patriots kept pace until the fourth quarter when down just 82-76, Pasig went for the jugular with Teng nailing a trey, Robbie Manalang hitting a long two, Mendoza knocking down a three-bomb, and Nic Belasco joining in the fun from three point land with a fourth triple. That put Sta. Lucia up 94-82 with under two minutes left, effectively settling the contest. Jayboy Solis and Jemal Vizcarra topscored for the Patriots with 15 apiece. Pasig goes to 6-2 while Parañaque slides to 3-6......»»

MPBL: Muntinlupa outguns Quezon City in high-scoring shootout

In yet another display of breathtaking offensive hoops, the Muntinlupa Cagers - Angelis Resort edged the Quezon City Capitals WEMSAP, 106-100, in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Lakan Season on Tuesday night. The gallery at the Muntinlupa Sports Center were treated to a brilliant performance by the home team, who featured a three-headed monster of attacking hoops in Edzel Mag-isa (24 points), Ryusei Koga, (22 points, 14 assists) and John Ortuoste (24 points). It's the second night in a row where the league's featured game has over 200 total points. On Monday night Navotas defeated Nueva Ecija,125-97. Koga and Mag-isa were judged as co-best players of the game, and the former, when asked where his confidence came from, had this to say: "Marami talagang sumusuporta sa akin at nagtitiwala sa kakayahan ko." The game was knotted at 47 at the half but the Cagers got into a groove in the third, erupting with 36 points to take a 10-point lead into the final period. The highlight of the quarter was Bobby Enguio's jaw-dropping alley-oop jam off an inch-perfect Koga pass to give them an 83-70 lead late in the quarter. But QC were determined to make a game of it, and in the fourth Aaron Black and Dahrrel Caranguian spearheaded a resurgence that pulled them to within one, 92 to 91, with four minutes to go. Then Muntinlupa went for the jugular. Koga buried a triple and Ivan Villanueva scored a three-point play and a layup for a 100-92 lead that held up in the end. The Cagers come closer to .500 with this win, as their slate now stands at 3-5. Meanwhile, the Capitals slide to 4-3. In the second game, the Parañaque Yabo Sports earned bragging rights along Daang Radyal with a fine 81-77 win against Imus Bandera Khaleb Shawarma - GLC Trucks and Equipment. Down 77-72 in the last two minutes, Jemal Vizcarra dropped a triple and then a mid-range jumper to draw the Patriots level. After a Keith Pido basket gave the Patriots the lead, Vizcarra capped a superb all-around evening with a block of James Martinez's pass, leading to a Parañaque steal, Imus foul, and two free throws from Jayboy Solis to seal the fate of the Bandera. The 9-0 run was one of many in a see-saw battle. Parañaque had a 16-0 stretch from the second to the third quarters that was answered by an 11-0 spurt by Imus that featured back-to-back triples from Mikee Reyes. Vizcarra's 23 points led all scorers as Parañaque picks up its third win in eight outings and snaps a two-game skid. Imus only got 9 points from Jayjay Helterbrand as they slip to 2-4. The Tuesay tripleheader began with Makati Super Crunch out-steadying Cebu Casino Ethyl Alcohol, 73-67. Jeckster Apinan was the big story in the first half, pouring in 13 points as Makati led 37-27 at the half. Makati kept Cebu at arm's length all through to the fourth. With four and a half minutes to go and up 63-51, Makati looked set to put away the game when Joshua Torralba faced an open lay-up on a fast break. But his attempted slam dunk clanged off the rim. That blooper ignited a 10-0 run from the Cebuanos, highlighted by a triple from Michael Cenita and capped by a short stab from Will McAloney to cut the lead to two, 63-61. To the relief of Torralba, Apinan completed a three-point play and Joseph Sedurifa knocked down a trey to restore Makati's cushion with a minute to go. Rhaffy Octubre provided two late triples for the Sharks but it was too little, too late. Apinan finished with 21 points and 7 rebounds as Cholo Villanueva's Super Crunch goes to 5-1. Cebu, now 3-5, were led by McAloney and Octubre, who each tallied 16 points. Cebu missed the offense of Patrick Cabahug, who did not play because of an open wound on his leg......»»

MPBL: Terrific Tayongtong leads QC to home win over Makati

Joco Tayongtong scored 13 of his 20 points in the final quarter as the Quezon City Capitals - WEMSAP roared back in the endgame to stun Makati Super Crunch 91-85 in Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball Lakan Cup action on Tuesday at the Ateneo Blue Eagle Gym. "Ang nasa isip ko lang ay manalo sa home court namin," said the former JRU Heavy Bomber after the game. Makati looked in command from the second quarter up until midway through the fourth after three straight JJ Manlangit baskets put them up by a dozen, 82-70. And then Joco Tayongtong happened. Tayongtong went berserk, leading an 11-0 run bouyed by a noisy crowd at the Blue Eagle Gym. Juneric Baloria's two free throws stopped the rot briefly for Makati, but Tayongtong went back to work with a three ball that keyed a 10-1 run to finish the game. Makati failed to score a field goal in the last five minutes of the contest to lose for the first time in five outings as only defending champion San Juan remains unbeaten in the Lakan Cup while QC improves to 3-2. Jeckster Apinan top scored for Cholo Villanueva's team with 21 points in a losing effort. The game brought back memories of the two teams' playoff series earlier this year in the Datu Cup, when seventh-seeded QC upset second-seeded Makati, sweeping them in two games. In the second game, Davao Occidental Cocolife upped their standing to 4-1 with a comfortable 86-55 romp over Rizal Golden Coolers Xentro Mall. Leading 36-31 at the half, the Tigers exploded with 27 points in the third quarter against only eight from Rizal to put a once-competitive game out of reach. Billy Robles, James Forrester and Mark Yee led the way with a barrage of points against a hapless Rizal defense. Yee claimed his 14th player of the game award with 21 points and 12 boards for a league-record 23rd MPBL double-double. Robles chipped in 15 for Davao. Only one player from Xentro Mall, Achie Iñigo, got into double figures with ten points. The Golden Coolers drop to 1-3. In the first match the Muntinlupa Cagers Angelis Resort won the Battle of BF Homes, defeating neighbors the Parañaque Patriots Yabo Sports 85-78. GJ Ylagan had a mammoth game with 22 points, including 6 out of 10 from three- point range, none bigger than a trey with 70 seconds to go in the game that gave Angelis Resort a 78-72 cushion. Matching Ylagan in scoring 22 was point guard Ryusei Koga, who skillfully outfoxed the Patriot pressing defense all day long with his ball-handling and passing. Completing the Munti big three was John Kevin Ortuoste, who poured in 19 markers. Parañaque shot a paltry 30.4 percent from the field, led by Vinny Begaso's 18 markers. Muntinlupa won despite seeing head coach Richie Melencio get tossed with 1:26 left in the game for a second technical after complaining about the officiating all game long. The Cagers climb to 2-4 in the standings with a second straight win. The Patriots are also now at 2-4......»»

Valdez, a two-time UAAP champion who bannered the PHI team in the 2015 Singapore SEA Games, assured LVPI in a meeting with Cayco in the sports association’s office at Arellano-Taft before she flew to Thailand Sunday to join 3BB Nakornnont in the Thai League, that she will return home during the break to join any of the three tryouts. “Nakapag-usap kami noong Saturday ang sabi niya sa akin uuwi siya para sa tryouts,” Cayco said Tuesday during the Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum at the Rizal Memorial Complex Media Center. Valdez will debut in the Thai League on January 29 making her unavailable for the Manila leg. She is expected to show up either in the Cebu or Davao leg.       National team head coach Francis Vicente, who discovered and molded Valdez into a star during her high school days as a University of Sto. Tomas player, pointed out that though Valdez is a cut above the rest with her volleyball skills, leadership and fan base she will still go under the scrutiny of the selection committee. “Alam naman natin na Alyssa Valdez is angat, sikat and sa akin din galing yan pero ayaw ko na kukunin ko na siya na, ‘O halika na rito wag ka na mag-tryout.’ Unfair naman ‘yun sa iba,” said Vicente. “Unfair naman yun kina Myla Pablo kina Grethcel Soltones e magaling din naman sila. Ayokong mabansagan na may kinikilingan. If she really wants to play in the national team kailangan niyang pumunta sa tryouts, no special treatment.”                             LVPI president Joey Romasanta commended the gesture of Valdez, who served as the country’s flag-bearer during the last SEA Games, saying that her willingness to join the tryouts during her break in the Thai League.          “’Yung sinabi ni Alyssa na uuwi siya rito to join the tryout for the national team is very commendable and a manifestation of her being a true athlete and her sincerest desire to serve the country via the national team,” said Roamsanta. “Ako, we are very hopeful that during the breaks in her (Thai League) schedule she will be able to join any of those tryouts.”       --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles             .....»»
