Georgia PM slams Russia on 2008 war anniv
Georgia on Tuesday marked the anniversary of a 2008 war with Russia that killed 400 citizens with its prime minister calling Moscow an “aggressor.” “We have known for a long time that Russia was an aggressor, we know that and the whole world knows that,” Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said at a wreath-laying ceremony to remember the dead at a cemetery in the capital Tbilisi. Russia sent thousands of troops into Georgia on 8 August 2008 after Tbilisi launched a large-scale military operation against South Ossetian separatists who had been shelling Georgian villages. Russia routed Georgia’s small army, occupying large swathes of territory for five days before a ceasefire was mediated by the then French president Nicolas Sarkozy. Former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev, who authorized the military action in 2008, defended Moscow’s actions in a statement marking the anniversary. “Our armed forces quickly and harshly punished the arrogant nationalists in five days,” he said on social media. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed solidarity with Tbilisi. “I thank all Georgian citizens who are defending freedom with us,” Zelensky said on Monday. Japan slams Russia threat on Hiroshima anniv
Japan’s leader took the occasion of the Hiroshima bombing commemoration on Sunday to hit out at Russia for threatening to nuke Ukraine. “Devastation brought to Hiroshima and Nagasaki by nuclear weapons can never be repeated,” Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, whose family comes from the city, said at a ceremony marking the world’s first nuclear bombing in Hiroshima 78 years ago. Around 140,000 people died in Hiroshima on 6 August 1945 and 74,000 in Nagasaki three days later, when the United States dropped atomic bombs on the two Japanese cities days before the end of World War II. Kishida warned that the path towards a nuclear free world “is becoming increasingly difficult because of deepening divisions in the international community over nuclear disarmament and Russia’s nuclear threat.” United Nations chief Antonio Guterres also issued a statement on the Hiroshima anniversary, saying that “some countries are recklessly rattling the nuclear saber once again, threatening to use these tools of annihilation.” “In the face of these threats, the global community must speak as one. Any use of nuclear weapons is unacceptable,” Guterres said. At the ceremony in Japan, thousands of people — survivors, relatives and foreign dignitaries from a record 111 countries — prayed for those killed or wounded in the Hiroshima bombing and called for world peace. Hiroshima officials, however, did not invite Russia or Belarus to the event for the second-straight year because of the Ukraine invasion. Russia’s leaders had repeatedly issued thinly veiled warnings that Moscow could use nuclear weapons against Ukraine while North Korea continues to test ballistic missiles in defiance of UN sanctions. NK marks armistice anniv with missile launches
North Koreans are celebrating the anniversary of the Korean War literally with a bang as its military test-fired two ballistic missiles late Monday. Its neighbors’ defense ministry detected the launches near Pyongyang and monitored the trajectories of the projectiles. The missile flew 400 kilometers into the East Sea at 11:55 p.m., Yonhap quoted South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff as saying. The launches were the latest in a series of weapons tests in recent weeks by Pyongyang, and come as Seoul and Washington ramp up defence cooperation in the face of soaring tensions with the North. Meanwhile, the planned “grand” Korean War armistice anniversary celebration on Thursday will be attended by Chinese diplomats, the first known foreign visitors since Pyongyang’s 2020 pandemic border closure. State media said that Pyongyang will mark 70 years since the signing of the armistice, known as Victory Day in the North, in a “grand manner that will go down in history.” The official Korean Central News Agency reported, and Beijing confirmed, that a Chinese delegation led by Politburo member Li Hongzhong would travel to the North for the event. “A military delegation of the Russian Federation led by Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu will pay a congratulatory visit to the DPRK,” the KCNA said Tuesday.
