G League prospects like Kai Sotto can earn degrees at Arizona State
Just because Kai Sotto chose the G League route doesn't mean he won't get the chance to get college education. As revealed by Select Team coach Brian Shaw in an interview set up by NBA Philippines, players in the G League program will have the chance to pursue their respective degrees once they choose to do so, even if they're already in the NBA. The G League will have ties with the Arizona State where players can get their education. "When they come through our program and they do make it to the NBA, we still pay for them for four years of college through a program in Arizona State if they ever wanna finish their education," Shaw said. If Arizon State rings a bell, it's the school of Fil-Am guard Remy Martin, who recently withdrew his NBA Draft application to come back for a senior season with the Sun Devils. ASU is also the alma mater of Houston Rockets star James Harden. "So that’s what a lot of people don’t know," Shaw added of the partnership with Arizona State. Top prospects opting out of college to play in the G League could be a trend moving forward. Jalen Green, the no. 1 recruit for 2020, was the first to make the jump. Other five-stars like Isaiah Todd and Daishen Nix soon followed, as did Kai Sotto. Some of the top prospects, like Green, likely won't play more than two years of Division 1 basketball anyway, so playing in the G League and being closer to the actual NBA seems like the better decision. "I'm not taking anything away from college. I played college ball, but you have a lot of kids, especially of the elite-level talent, that know exactly what their end goal is and they don't particularly want to go to school or go to class," Shaw said. "This [G League program] offers them an opportunity, if they're on this level, that they still get to train every single day. If they to college and maybe played one or two years anyway, here they don't have to go to class," he added. Making the NBA is the priority for players like Green and Sotto. Getting top-notch basketball all while enjoying the pro benefits sure made the G League a very attractive option. "The big advantage is that they'll be able to spend a good majority of time working on their game," Shaw said. "On top of that, they're able to be paid significant amounts of money for this year to play, which they wouldn't have been able to get in college," he added. — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»
Kobe Bryant s Basketball Hall of Fame induction moved to 2021
By The Associated Press Kobe Bryant and the rest of this year’s Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame class won’t be inducted in 2020 — or at the birthplace of basketball. The Hall announced Friday that the enshrinement ceremony will be held May 13-15, 2021, and the entire festivities will be moved to Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut. This year was to be a highlight for the Hall of Fame, located in Springfield, Massachusetts. Bryant, killed in January in a helicopter crash, headlined a decorated class featuring Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett that would have been enshrined in the recently renovated museum. But the coronavirus pandemic scuttled those plans and hit the Hall so hard that it eliminated several full-time positions and cut senior management pay in the 25-40% range. Hall of Fame President and CEO John Doleva says the rescheduled enshrinement festivities, the diminished museum visitation and the uncertainty regarding the Hall’s college and high school basketball events this fall “has forced us to make these very difficult decisions.” Mohegan Sun is a long-time partner of the Hall. Doleva says it can a operate a “near-bubble” to provide a secure environment for guests......»»
Jalen Green to Gilas Pilipinas? 'It could be a possibility,' says Fil-Am star
Jalen Green to Gilas Pilipinas is a tantalizing thought, that's for sure. It's not entirely impossible, after all, the no. 1 recruit of the 2020 class and a projected top NBA Draft pick has Filipino blood through his mother side. There's only one major hurdle in the Green to Gilas dream: young Jalen has already played, and won FIBA gold medals, for Team USA. FIBA rules state that a player who has played in official competition "after having reached his seventeenth (17) birthday may not play for a national team of another country." It would take "exceptional circumstances" to have Green leave Team USA and instead play for Gilas Pilipinas. Nevertheless, the 17-year-old Jalen remains open to play for the Philippines, if there's even a slight chance it could be a reality. "I could be a possibility," Green said in an interview set up by NBA Philippines. "I've been to the Philippines twice in the last four years and I've been asked that question over how many times. It could be a possibility, I don't really know at this time. I have played for USA, so I'm not sure. It could happen, only time will tell at this point," he added. Not exactly busy with national team duties nowadays, Green says his focus is on the G League. The goal is to make the NBA of course. "Obviously, my end goal is to make it to the NBA," Green said. "I thought what better way than go to the G League and be around pros, get pro training, pro nutrition, all that. It's just another level of training and getting better and learning the game," Jalen added. — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

Getting to 'right place' key in US journeys of Kai, Kobe says Pinoy D1 coach
Kai Sotto is the latest, but he's definitely not the first Filipino player to try to make it in the NBA. The more recent players to try and make the jump were Japeth Aguilar, Kiefer Ravena, Ray Parks Jr., and Kobe Paras. Kiefer and Parks Jr. tried to go the NBA D-League route, while Japeth and Kobe played for NCAA Division 1 schools in Western Kentucky and Creighton University respectively. As for Kai, he's skipping college to play in the NBA G League. Sotto's select team will have a number of five-star recruits, including Fil-Am Jalen Green. Kai is seen as the Filipino prospect that has the best chance to make it to the NBA, but what's going right for Kai that went wrong for Kobe, Japeth, and the others? It's all about opportunity says Mike Magpayo, the head coach for University of California Riverside and the first D1 school coach to be of Filipino descent. [Related: UC Riverside installs first-ever Filipino head coach in US NCAA Div. 1] "You have to pick the right place," Magpayo said on Coaches Unfiltered. "Kobe had the athleticism and he had talent. Obviously UCLA would have been great but maybe it wasn't the right level so he goes to Creighton, and that's even a higher level right now. You just have to pick the right place, you gotta play, that's how you get better," Magpayo added. As a true freshman, Paras barely played for the Bluejays and appeared in only 15 games. The same goes for Japeth at Western Kentucky and for Kiefer and Parks Jr. in the NBA D-League. They just didn't play enough. Getting to play might as well be the driving force behind Kai's move to skip college, and the new G League program certainly offer a big opportunity for prospects seeking to make the NBA jump. Four out of the five players confirmed for the G League Select team, including Kai Sotto, were players in the Class of 2020. [Related: Meet Kai Sotto's G League teammates] "Kai, I think this is good because at least he'll be [playing]," Magpayo said. "I mean, I would love for Kai to be in the NCAA, I think Kai would do really well. This is new, they've never done this G League thing. We'll see how it turns out but I think there are definitely gonna be more opportunities," he added. — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

Kai Sotto's select team in the NBA G League finally has a coach. Shaw was part of the first 3-peat in Los Angeles led by Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal during the early 2000s.
