Teachers’ group lauds DepEd move
The Teachers’ Dignity Coalition on Friday acknowledged the action taken by the Department of Education in response to the constant cries of teachers and children to consider the extreme heat and suspend face-to-face classes. This as the Education department released a memorandum signed by Assistant Secretary Francis Bringas which reiterated the agency’s policy “to suspend in-person classes and implement modular distance learning in cases of unfavorable weather and environment such as, but not limited to, extremely high temperatures which may considerably affect the conduct of classroom learning and put the learners’ health and wellbeing at risk.” The DepEd issued the memorandum after some school children fainted in Laguna and Mindoro recently due to the extreme heat. Groups of teachers and even parents call for DepEd to return to the old school calendar. “It will take at least 4 years to gradually return to the old school calendar where the months of April and May are designated as school breaks, for now the alternative methods that can be used are shortened teaching time and modular and online learning,” said TDC national chairperson Benjo Basas. He also acknowledged the issuance of such a memorandum but stressed that returning to the old academic calendar would require adjustments which could take years to implement, while the suffering of teachers and students is felt in real-time. “A more strategic approach is needed, for example, a lower-class size of no more than 25 students, more stable classrooms designed for student comfort and provision of electric fans or even air -conditioning system. Certainly, we will need funds and policies to implement such,” Basas said. The group reiterated that public school teachers have the right to a two-month school break that could be compromised if DepEd immediately reverts to the old system. It cited DepEd Order 34, s. 2022, which sets the August opening of the school calendar for the 2022-2023, 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 school years. Azurin: Next PNP chief must be tougher, principled
Seven days before his retirement, Philippine National Police chief, Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr., on Monday said he will request President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to choose and name a tougher and level-headed successor. “I will recommend one who is stricter than me because we are leveling up. We don’t need someone who has no principle and no commitment to the President,” Azurin said in Filipino. Though admitting that he finds himself less strict, he said President Marcos Jr. should be compromised. “He is the only person we’ve got to uplift the country’s economy. Let us not shame our President,” Azurin told reporters in Camp Crame. He said he will hang his police uniform a week from now with his head up high because he has served the country and the 228,000-strong PNP well with my integrity and credibility intact. “I will conclude my tour of duty, knowing fully well that I have done my job to my people, my country, and our Almighty,” said Azurin, who is a member of the Philippine Military Academy “Makatao” Class of 1989. Appointed by Marcos as the country’s 28th top cop in August last year, Azurin is set to retire on 24 April upon reaching the mandatory age of 56 after 38 years in service. Among the possible contenders for PNP chief are the three top officers of the command group — deputy chief for administration, Lt. Gen. Rhodel Sermonia; deputy chief for operations, Maj. Gen. Jonnel Estomo; and Lt. Gen. Michael John Dubria, chief of the directorial staff. Other contenders are Directorate for Intelligence chief, Maj. Gen. Benjamin Acorda; Directorate for Investigation and Detective Management chief, Maj. Gen. Eliseo Cruz; Criminal Investigation and Detection Group chief, Brig. Gen. Romeo Caramat Jr.; and National Capital Region Police Office head, Maj. Gen. Edgar Alan Okubo. Azurin admitted the PNP is suffering from demoralization over the recent issue of the involvement of police officers in the alleged cover-up of the P6.7 billion shabu haul last year. He urged the hardworking and dedicated men and women of the PNP to remain steadfast and committed to serving the organization and the Filipino people. “Do not be bothered by the sweeping, false accusations hurled against some of the PNP officials. Let us be content with the fact that we are serving the Filipino the best way we can, until the last drop of our blood — to serve and protect, with all our hearts, and with all our might,” he said. He added: “Continue to believe in the organization, have faith in the leadership. For in the end, the truth shall prevail, and we shall come out triumphant.” Azurin said he still dreams of a transformed PNP organization where no PNP officer is involved in the use, possession, manufacture, trade, or selling of illegal drugs. Lawmakers relieved over decision to postpone classes; chides DepEd on unpreparedness
Lawmakers heaved a sigh of relief over the decision of government to postpone the resumption of classes from August 24 to October 5, saying that this exposed the Department of Education’s unpreparedness in pushing for the original schedule for opening schools. House of Representatives (ALVIN KASIBAN / MANILA BULLETIN / FILE PHOTO) This developed as Quezon City Rep. Precious Hipolito Castelo called on government to remove taxes imposed on computers, mobile phones and other gadgets that would be used by students and teachers in virtual and blended learning. “Removing taxes will considerably reduce the cost of these devices and gadgets, and make them affordable to poor learners and teachers,” she said. ACT Teachers Partylist Rep. France Castro said as a result of the postponement, the DepEd must now take advantage of the additional time to implement health and safety guidelines for teachers, non-teaching personnel, students and their families. On the other hand, Kabataan Partylist Rep. Sarah Jane Elago chided DepEd for refusing to accept suggestions about its original plan for class resumption, saying that the decision to move it to October 5 indicated an admission on the part of the department that it was not prepared to open on August 24. “Maaga pa lang dapat ay naging bukas na ang DepEd sa rekomendasyon nito keysa itinanggi pa ang mga hinaharap na suliranin ng mga guro at kawani sa paghahanda para sa blended distance learning (DepEd should have been open to suggestions early instead of refusing to admit the problems facing teachers and staff in preparing for blended distance learning),” said Elago. Castro urged DepEd to provide adequate funds for the procurement of personal protective equipment and finance the transportation expenses of teachers and non-teaching personnel as part of the preparations for the October 5 opening. “The Department of Education must use this time to comprehensively study and implement concrete plans for the safe and quality reopening of schools that will be accessible to every child,” said the teachers representative. Meanwhile, Castelo said the problem in virtual learning that is facing teachers and students may be addressed if government steps in to reduce the cost of much-needed computer and communications gadget. Earlier, Cavite Rep. Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino urged the Department of Trade and Industry and the Department of Information and Communications Technology to take action against the overpricing of gadgets. Tolentino, chairman of the House Committee on Accounts, noted that as a result of the high demand for computers and communications gadgets, unscrupulous traders have made the prices of units for sale very restrictive to ordinary students and parents......»»
