Former gang leader charged with rapper Tupac Shakur’s 1996 murder
A quarter of a century after Tupac Shakur was gunned down in a gang feud in Las Vegas, a man was charged Friday with his murder, a killing that came to symbolize the violence of gangsta rap as it surged into the mainstream. Duane "Keffe D" Davis, 60, had long acknowledged his involvement in the slaying, boasting he was the "on-site commander" in the effort to kill Shakur and Death Row Records boss Marion "Suge" Knight in revenge for his nephew's assault. Davis' early morning arrest Friday followed 27 years of investigations by police, who had been frustrated by an apparent lack of useable evidence, and came two months after they raided his home in Henderson, just outside Las Vegas. "The presumption is great that he is responsible for the murder of Tupac Shakur, and he will be found guilty of murder with the use of a deadly weapon," prosecutor Marc DiGiacomo told a court in Nevada. Shakur, the best-selling hip-hop artist behind hits such as "California Love," "Changes," and "Dear Mama," was already a huge star in the world of rap when he was gunned down in Las Vegas on 7 September 1996. He was just 25. He was signed to Death Row Records, an outfit associated at the time with Los Angeles street gang Mob Piru, which had a long-standing beef with the Southside Compton Crips. DiGiacomo said on the day of the murder, Shakur and Death Row Records co-founder Knight were in Las Vegas to watch Mike Tyson fight. In a hotel elevator lobby, they set upon Crips member Orlando Anderson, the nephew of Davis. "(Davis) formulated a plan to exact revenge upon Mr Knight and Mr Shakur" for this beating, DiGiacomo said. "He acquired a 40-caliber Glock firearm from a drug associate. "He gets into (a light-colored) Cadillac and he provides the 40-caliber Glock firearm to one of the two individuals in the back seat," and the group set off to find their intended victims. The two rap moguls were spotted in a car on a Las Vegas street. "They pulled up next to the vehicle and the rear passenger fired a number of rounds out of that vehicle striking Mr Knight in the head and Mr Shakur several times," DiGiacomo said. Shakur died in a hospital several days later. Knight survived. The prosecutor said what happened that night had been largely understood by investigators for many years, but they had not had sufficient admissible evidence to advance the case. That began to change when Davis, reportedly the only person in the car that night still alive, published an autobiography and spoke about the crime for a TV show. "He admitted to being the front right passenger in the light Cadillac and that he was the on-ground, on-site commander of the effort to kill Tupac Shakur and Suge Knight." A court hearing in the case was scheduled for next week. Rivalry Shakur had a brief but stratospheric career, rapidly rising from backup dancer to self-styled gangsta rapper and one of the most influential figures in hip-hop, selling 75 million records. He became a key figure in a vaunted rivalry, egged on by promoters, between East Coast and West Coast hip-hop. Though born in New York, Shakur moved as a teenager with his family to California, becoming one of the most identifiable figures in the West Coast scene. Shakur's murder was followed six months later by the shooting death in Los Angeles of his rival, East Coast rapper Christopher "The Notorious BIG" Wallace. The investigation's slow progress led to accusations police were not trying hard enough to find the killers of young Black men. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Sheriff Kevin McMahill on Friday said that was not true. "I know there have been many people who did not believe that the murder of Tupac Shakur was important to this police department," he told reporters. "I'm here to tell you, that was simply not the case. It was not the case back then. And it is not the case today. "Our goal... has always been to hold those accountable and responsible for Tupac's violent murder accountable." Netflix sends out last DVD
Streaming powerhouse Netflix mailed out its last DVD on Friday, ending service after 25 years that helped the company grow into an entertainment behemoth. Founder Reed Hastings has often said that he started the company in a pique of frustration with the Blockbuster rental store that charged him $40 for returning the movie Apollo 13 six weeks late. Out of that eventually came the idea for a subscription-based DVD-by-mail service that let the customer hold onto the title as long as they wanted. Once viewed, the DVD was slipped into a prepaid envelope and sent back to the company, with the subscriber's next choice sent on its way in exchange. "In 1998, we delivered our first DVD. This morning, we shipped our last," the company said on its website on Friday. "For 25 years, we redefined how people watched films and series at home and shared the excitement as they opened their mailboxes to our iconic red envelopes," the statement added. In April, when the decision to stop DVD rentals was announced, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said those "iconic" mailings "changed the way people watched shows and movies at home -- and they paved the way for the shift to streaming." On its site, the company said the mail service accumulated 40 million unique subscribers throughout its run, mainly in the United States. The streaming platform currently has 238 million subscribers worldwide. Netflix said that the first movie mailed out was the comedy Beetlejuice and that more than 5.2 billion DVDs have been sent out since then. The most-rented DVD was the US sports drama "The Blind Side" starring Sandra Bullock. That feel-good movie, about a white family that takes in a Black homeless child, was released in 2009 when the DVD service was at the height of its popularity. That movie has since proved controversial after the former NFL star and subject of the film Michael Oher said the portrayal was exaggerated and filled with inaccuracies. Monumental mistake
There has been a rash of vandalism of historical landmarks in Europe by unruly tourists. On 23 August, the 460-year-old Vasari Corridor, a beautiful riverside passageway connected to the famous Uffizi Galleries in Florence, Italy, was sprayed with soccer-related graffiti. Local police used video surveillance footage to identify the vandals, two German students aged 20 and 21, who were staying with other students at a nearby Airbnb. The video footage showed the two spraying black paint on the arches of the elevated passageway running along the Arno River at 5:20 a.m. Italy’s Culture Ministry said the vandalism would require 10,000 euros worth of repairs, CNN reported. Police tracked the location of the two vandals and a search of their room yielded the evidence: two cans of black spray paint and paint-stained clothing. Uffizi Director Eike Schmidt called for the jailing of vandals defacing cultural heritage sites to deter similar violations in the future. In Brussels, Belgium, an Irish tourist visiting the local stock exchange known as The Bourse fancied the statues at the entrance of the building a day after it reopened on 9 September following three years of renovations that cost 90 million euros. A police officer caught on his camera the drunk Irishman climbing on the statue of a naked torch bearer beside a statue of a lion to have his picture taken. When the tourist was dismounting, he held onto the hand with the torch, breaking it with his weight. Police later arrested the Irishman in a nearby fast food restaurant, according to reports. The tourist was charged the cost of repairing the statue, a staggering 17,600 euros. The post Monumental mistake appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
French rapper MHD faces verdict over youth’s murder
Acclaimed French rapper MHD was on Saturday awaiting with eight co-accused a verdict in the trial over the murder of a young man in Paris in 2018. MHD, whose real name is Mohamed Sylla, once again insisted on his innocence as he made his final statements before the court retired to render the verdict after three weeks of proceedings. "From the beginning, I have maintained my innocence in this case and I will continue to maintain my innocence," he told the packed court. The prosecutor has asked for an 18-year prison sentence for the rapper, acquittals for two of the accused, and jail sentences of 13-20 years for the others. The verdict is due to be delivered later in the day. His seven co-accused present in court -- an eighth is being tried in absentia -- have also insisted they were not involved in the violent attack on Loic K. in July 2018 that resulted in his death. The death of the 23-year-old man has been portrayed by investigators as a settling of scores between rival gangs. MHD, who rose to fame with a distinctive blend of West African sounds with US-style hip-hop, was charged with homicide in January 2019 and imprisoned. He has denied taking part in the assault, which saw the victim rammed by a black Mercedes and then beaten up and stabbed by around a dozen people in a gritty part of the capital's 10th arrondissement. But a local resident filmed the incident from his window, and the Mercedes was quickly identified as belonging to MHD. Other witnesses identified the rapper by his haircut or a Puma sweatshirt, for which he was a brand ambassador, according to investigative reports seen by AFP. The incident concerns the Cite des Chaufourniers, a low-income estate in the area that the former pizza delivery driver continued to frequent despite his fame. He was released in the summer of 2020 after a year and a half in custody as the investigations continued and released a new album. MHD is seen as a pioneer of afro-trap, which mixes hip-hop and African traditions. The football-mad performer, who was born in France to Guinean and Senegalese parents, is best known for "Afro Trap Part 3 (Champions League)", a song in praise of the Paris Saint-Germain football club. Federal charges for five police over beating death of African American
Five police officers already charged in the murder of Tyre Nichols, a young African American who died after being beaten, now face federal indictment, the Justice Department announced Tuesday. Videos showed the officers, who are all Black, repeatedly kicking and punching Nichols during a traffic stop close to his home in the US city of Memphis on January 7, three days before he died in hospital. "The country watched in horror as Tyre Nichols was kicked, punched, tased, and pepper sprayed," Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a brief video statement posted online. The department said the five officers, who have been fired, "willfully deprived Nichols of his constitutional rights," resulting in "bodily injury and the death of Nichols." A federal grand jury in Memphis, located in the US South, on Tuesday charged the five former officers with federal civil rights, conspiracy, and obstruction offenses, the Department of Justice said. The officers -- Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Justin Smith, Emmitt Martin III, and Desmond Mills Jr. -- have already been charged by state prosecutors in Tennessee with second-degree murder, aggravated assault, kidnapping, official misconduct, and "official oppression." They have pleaded not guilty. Nichols, 29, was stopped by the five, who were members of a special police anti-crime squad called the Scorpion Unit, for an alleged traffic violation, according to police. He was beaten viciously by the officers, in scenes recorded in body camera and security camera footage that triggered outrage when made public later that month. Vice President Kamala Harris attended Nichols' funeral in February and Nichols' family members were invited to President Joe Biden's State of the Union address in Washington several days later. New York teen arrested in hate crime death of Black gay dancer
A 17-year-old high school student in New York has been charged with murder as a hate crime in the stabbing death of a Black gay dancer, authorities said Saturday, in a case that has attracted attention from stars like Beyonce and Spike Lee. O'Shae Sibley, 28, a professional dancer and choreographer, was killed on July 29 by a single stab wound to the chest during an altercation at a Brooklyn gas station. "He could be my son," New York Mayor Eric Adams, who is Black, said at a news conference at the gas station where the suspect's arrest was announced. The teen, who was not named, surrendered on Friday evening, said Joseph Kenny, an assistant chief at the New York Police Department's detective bureau. He was charged with second-degree murder as a hate crime, and with criminal possession of a weapon. The deadly confrontation late last Saturday night was captured on camera, showing Sibley and several other men shirtless and wearing shorts at the gas station. "As they waited to refuel their vehicle, Mr. Sibley and his group began dancing to music that was being played in their car," Kenny said. The suspect and others in his group "began to yell at Mr. Sibley and his friends, they began to call him derogatory names and use homophobic slurs against him," Kenny said. "They also made anti-Black statements, all while demanding that they simply stop dancing." The confrontation lasted four minutes, ending when Sibley was stabbed once in the chest, hitting his heart. He was pronounced dead at a hospital. Tributes have poured in for Sibley, including from superstar singer Beyonce whose website opened with the message: "Rest in Power O'Shae Sibley." Filmmaker Lee posted a photo on Instagram of Sibley dancing joyfully against a rainbow background. "Always loved," the caption said, adding the hashtag #saytheirnames, a phrase calling attention to victims of systemic racism and racial injustice. nr/acb/tjj The post New York teen arrested in hate crime death of Black gay dancer appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
3 alleged QC thieves captured
Three alleged thieves were nabbed over the weekend by operatives of the Quezon City Police District. In the first incident, Erwin Albaniel Dizon, 30, was arrested by QCPD Masambong Police Station after his boss and accounting staff complained that he gambled the P45,000 he withdrew from a bank. Dizon was the liaison officer of the company and was tasked to withdraw the company money at the BDO West Avenue Branch. However, instead of depositing the money, Dizon purportedly used it for online gambling. The victim and the accounting staff filed a complaint with the police, which led to Dizon’s arrest. He was found in possession of five bet list receipts from a 7-11 convenience store, with a total amount of P45,000. In the second incident, the QCPD Kamuning Police Station arrested Rommel dela Peña, 23, and Casper Reyeg, 26, for alleged cable theft and resisting arrest. The suspects were reportedly caught cutting cable wires from an iron pole in Barangay Pinyahan. When the police approached them, the suspects fled. The police gave chase and eventually arrested them. Reyeg tried to resist arrest, but the police were able to subdue him. The suspects were found in possession of a metal steel hacksaw, a 7-inch knife, a black backpack, and five meters of cable wire. They will all be charged in court. The post 3 alleged QC thieves captured appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

"Plaintiffs Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams and Noelle Rodriguez allege sexual, religious and racial harassment, disability discrimination, assault and false imprisonment, among other things," the law firm representing them said in a statement. "Davis and Williams were eventually fired while Rodriguez resigned over the appalling behavior," it added. One of the allegations centers around an Amsterdam red-light district sex show which the dancers say they felt pressured to attend. At the show Lizzo pressured her dancers to interact with the nude performers, the suit alleges. It also alleges that Lizzo's dance leader, Shirlene Quigley, frequently made sexual comments and proselytized her Christian beliefs, especially against pre-marital sex, "regardless of protestations." The dancers also say that there was an extended dispute over compensation between legs of Lizzo's global tour. The lawsuit alleges that white managers from Lizzo's production company, Big Grrrl Big Touring, Inc., which was also named in the complaint, "often accused the Black members of the dance team of being lazy, unprofessional, and having bad attitudes." "Not only do these words ring familiar as tropes used to disparage and discourage Black women from advocating for themselves, but the same accusations were not levied against dancers who are not Black," according to the complaint cited in the statement. "Only the dance cast -- comprised of full-figured women of color -- were ever spoken to in this manner, giving Plaintiffs the impression that these comments were charged with racial and fat-phobic animus," it added. Representatives for Lizzo did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The post Popstar Lizzo named in employee harassment suit appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Student arrested over blasphemous exam paper
Authorities in Mauritania have arrested and charged a high school student for allegedly disrespecting and mocking the Prophet Mohammed, Islam’s holiest figure. The 19-year-old allegedly wrote blasphemous words in her Arabic-language religious education test, the public prosecutor’s office in the capital Nouakchott, said without specifying what he wrote. A baccalaureate exam grader denounced the Atar school student’s paper on Facebook earlier this month, posting it on his page, but deliberately made it illegible, an Agence France-Presse journalist reported. As the story spread on social media, the government faced criticism for not bringing the case to court sooner. Blasphemy against the Prophet is punishable by death with no possibility of appeal in Mauritania, although there have been no executions since 1987. A Mauritanian blogger, Cheikh Ould Mohamed Ould Mkheitir, was in 2019 sentenced to death for blasphemy over an article he wrote criticizing the use of religion to justify discrimination, including against black Mauritanians. He was released after five years in prison and subsequently left the country. The post Student arrested over blasphemous exam paper appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Thai court jails teen over ‘crop top’ royal insult
A Thai court sentenced a teenager to 12 months in prison for royal defamation Thursday over a "crop top" outfit he wore to a protest three years ago, a rights group said. Thailand's lese-majeste law is one of the strictest in the world, and those convicted of criticizing King Maha Vajiralongkorn or his close family can be jailed for up to 15 years. Napasit joined a pro-democracy protest in 2020 wearing a black crop top, a seeming reference to pictures that appeared in some European media several years earlier apparently showing the king wearing a similar article of clothing. The 19-year-old, whose name was withheld by the court, also had a message painted on his body deemed a "mockery to the king", a statement from Thai Lawyers for Human Rights said. "The king is of a sacred status that should not be violated," the court said in its judgment, according to the legal group. Napasit was initially sentenced to three years in jail, "but as the defendant committed the crime when he was a minor aged 16, it was reduced by half to one year and six months... And due to useful testimony the defendant gave, the sentence was reduced to 12 months," TLHR said. At least 246 people have been accused of or charged with breaking the royal defamation law since mid-2020, including 20 minors, according to a TLHR tally. Domestic and international media must exercise strict caution in their reporting of lese-majeste cases and the monarchy in general, or risk prosecution. The Move Forward Party (MFP), which won the most seats in May elections, campaigned on a pledge to soften the law. But on Wednesday, the party's leader Pita Limjaroenrat was suspended as a lawmaker, pending investigation in a share ownership case by the Constitutional Court, and his two attempts to become prime minister have been blocked by parliament. MeTC employee discharged for theft
The Supreme Court has dismissed a court employee for theft of court collections amounting to P277,000. In a decision dated 27 June 2023, the Supreme Court found Charlibeth P. Sicad, Clerk III of the Cashier Unit of Office of the Clerk of Court, Metropolitan Trial Court in Makati City guilty of gross misconduct constituting violation of the Code of Conduct for Court Personnel, Serious Dishonesty and Commission of a Crime involving moral turpitude. The SC found that Sicad’s actions were a serious violation of the trust placed in her by the Judiciary. Sicad was charged for qualified theft, which is now pending before the trial court. The SC found that Sicad stole the money from the OCC-MeTC’s cashier drawer while her colleague was away. Sicad was seen going to the storage room at the back of the OCC-MeTC, even though everyone was ordered to stay in their work areas. The police officers saw Sicad coming prompting them to search the area where she had come out. There, the police officers discovered the stolen money inside a black pouch. The SC found that Sicad’s actions were a serious violation of the trust placed in her by the Judiciary. The Court also noted that Sicad’s actions had the potential to undermine the public’s faith in the justice system. The post MeTC employee discharged for theft appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Weed ‘trader’ collared along NLEX
The police seized about 30 kilograms of marijuana in an operation along the North Luzon Expressway last Tuesday. Due to the operation, heavy vehicular traffic built up in the southbound lane of the NLEX and continued to the Marilao Exit area for at least three hours, resulting to motorists and commuters getting irate. The driver of a black Toyota Fortuner was arrested after the weed, said to have been sourced from Benguet and valued at P3.6 million, was confirmed to be in his possession. In his haste to evade the police, the suspect backed off his sports utility vehicle into two other vehicles. He sustained injuries from the incident, while the conditions of the people in the other two vehicles were unknown as of press time. Authorities were tipped off about the regular purchase by the suspect of the contraband, prompting them to tail his vehicle, leading to his arrest. The Southern Police District said its personnel had been planning the operation for the past two weeks. The suspect, who will be charged with violating the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, was detained at the SPD pending a commitment order from a court.
