BFAR extends aid to bereaved families, survivors of Bajao de Masinloc incident
The Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has extended its condolences and immediate assistance to the families of three fishermen who died in a maritime incident off the waters of Bajo de Masinloc in the West Philippine Sea. DA-BFAR National Director Atty. Demosthenes R. Escoto handed the Bureau’s P20,000 cash assistance and food packages to each bereaved family during his visit to the wake of the three fishermen on Thursday night in Calapandayan, Subic in Zambales. “Buong-pusong nakikiramay po ang BFAR sa inyo,” Director Escoto told them during his visit. “Alam po naming walang kahit anong tulong ang makakatumbas sa buhay ng inyong mga mahal sa buhay, pero nandito po ang aming ahensya para mag-abot ng paunang tulong at makagaan kahit kaunti sa inyong nararamdaman.” Escoto said the Bureau will also provide a scholarship for their children’s college education in Fisheries at any state college or university where they are qualified for admission. This covers tuition, monthly stipend, and thesis allowance until they finish the program. Scholars will also be prioritized by the DA-BFAR for employment. The 11 other survivors of the maritime incident each received P2,000 cash aid and food packs from the Bureau. In addition, the DA-BFAR has committed to assist in repairing the vessel that was damaged during the October 2 incident to help the affected fisherfolk resume their livelihood activities. The Bureau will also provide a brand-new 62-footer fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) fishing boat to the Subic Commercial Operators Fishing Association Inc. to further equip them in fishing. Delma Morados, the association's vice president, received the award on behalf of the group Thursday night. Escoto told the families that additional livelihood packages such as post-harvest training and equipment would be given to them to help them through the Bureau’s regional office in Central Luzon, headed by Region 3 Regional Director Wilfredo M. Cruz. He also honored the sacrifices of the fishermen who perished in the incident — Benidecto V. Olandria, Dexter G. Laudencia, and Romeo L. Mejico Jr. “Malalim po ang respeto namin sa mga mangingisda ng Pilipinas, na itinuturing naming mga bayani at kasangga ng pamahalaan para masigurong may sapat na pagkain sa bansa,” Director Escoto said. “Ayaw po naming makakita ng mga mangingisda na namamatay habang nagsasakripisyo para sa kanilang pamilya at sa bayan kaya ikinalulungkot po namin ang nangyari at kaisa po ninyo kami sa paghahangad ng katotohanan at hustisya,” he added, citing President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s assurance that the government will hold accountable those behind the tragic incident. Bong Go honored with Gawad Pagkilala Award at San Mateo’s 451st Founding Anniversary
On the 451st Founding Anniversary of San Mateo, Rizal, Senator Christopher "Bong" Go was honored with the Gawad Pagkilala Award at the Municipal Stadium on September 21, in recognition of his significant contributions to the community. Go then emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation in the progress of the community. "Ang bayanihan ay hindi lamang simpleng kataga, ito ay isinasabuhay natin at ito ang nagpapalakas sa ating komunidad, at nagbibigay inspirasyon sa ating lahat upang magkasama tayo sa pagharap ng mga pagsubok at hamon," he stated. Go also lauded the local government led by Mayor Bartolome Rivera for their service to the community, saying, "Nais kong bigyan ng papuri ang aking mga kapwa lingkod-bayan, sa inyong walang sawang serbisyong ibinibigay sa inyong bayan.” Go extended further support to residents who may need medical assistance from the government. Go mentioned that there are Malasakit Centers in the province that they can reach out to if they need support with their medical-related expenses. “Sa mga pasyente, lapitan niyo lang ang Malasakit Center dahil para ‘to sa inyo. Kung may hospital bill kayo, nandiyan ang mga ahensya ng gobyerno na tutulong para mabayaran ito,” said Go. A brainchild of Go, the Malasakit Centers program is designed to help ensure that indigent patients have convenient access to the medical assistance programs offered by partner agencies. Go is the principal author and sponsor of Republic Act No. 11463 or the Malasakit Centers Act of 2019, which institutionalized the Malasakit Centers program. Currently, there are 159 operational centers that have assisted more than seven million Filipinos nationwide, according to the Department of Health. In Rizal, the Malasakit Centers are located at Antipolo City Hospital System Annex IV, Casimiro A. Ynares Sr. Memorial Hospital in Rodriguez, Bagong Cainta Municipal Hospital, and Margarito A. Duavit Memorial Hospital in Binangonan. On the same day, Go also personally attended the Super Health Center groundbreaking ceremony in the town. The event was also attended by local officials, including Governor Nina Ricci Ynares, Mayor Rivera, Vice Mayor Jaime Romel Roxas, and Municipal Health Officer Dr. Nyl Jarem Amorsolo, among others. Super Health Centers shall provide convenient access for basic healthcare delivery, offering a wide range of medical services to communities. These Super Health Centers provide services such as database management, outpatient care, birthing facilities, isolation units, diagnostic services (including laboratory, X-ray, and ultrasound), pharmacies, and ambulatory surgical units. Additional services include eye, ear, nose, and throat (EENT) care, oncology centers, physical therapy and rehabilitation centers, as well as telemedicine for remote diagnosis and treatment. Aside from San Mateo, more Super Health Centers are funded across Rizal, including two in Antipolo City and one of each in Binangonan, Jala-Jala, Rodriguez, San Mateo, Taytay, Tanay, Angono, Cainta, and Cardona. Moreover, the senator also shared that he is the principal sponsor and one of the authors of the recently passed Republic Act 11959 or the Regional Specialty Centers Act. The said law mandates the establishment of Regional Specialty Centers within existing DOH regional hospitals. Meanwhile, as an adopted son of CALABARZON, Go assured the residents of his continued support. "Ako naman po bilang inyong Senator Kuya Bong Go at bilang adopted son ng CALABARZON, asahan niyo patuloy akong tutulong sa inyong pag-asenso sa abot ng aking makakaya," he said. "Sa pagbibigay ng oportunidad sa ating mga mamamayan, patuloy nating pinatutunayan na ang pagtutulungan at pagkakaisa ay isang epektibong daan patungo sa ating pagbangon muli mula sa mga pagsubok na ating hinaharap,” he added. Go concluded his speech with a call for continued unity and compassion for others, saying "Nawa'y magtuloy-tuloy ang inyong pag-unlad. Nawa'y patuloy tayong magkaisa, magtulungan, at magbayanihan upang maging inspirasyon sa iba't ibang komunidad sa buong bansa.” The post Bong Go honored with Gawad Pagkilala Award at San Mateo’s 451st Founding Anniversary appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
SB19: ‘Yan ang Coach Stell namin!’
Following multiple awards, sold-out concerts and the recently concluded PAGTATAG world tour, Stell Ajero of SB19 continues to be “booked and busy.” Ajero, the main vocalist and lead dancer of the global P-pop group SB19, said his co-members are all-out in supporting his solo gig as The Voice Generations coach despite their group activities. In an interview with Boy Abunda during “Fast Talk with Boy Abunda” on 12 September, Abunda asked the singer-songwriter about SB19’s reaction when he was offered to be one of the coaches of The Voice Generations. “Sabi nila sa’kin, ‘Stell, kapag hindi mo pa tinanggap ang project na ‘yan, hindi namin alam kung anong gagawin sa’yo (They said, “Stell, if you won’t accept this project, we don’t know what to do with you),” Ajero said. Before the GMA offer, he explained, he had been very selective in accepting solo projects because he wanted to prioritize group projects with SB19. However, the 28-year-old vocalist told Abunda that all he needed was the push and encouragement from SB19 and his loved ones. “With the help of my group, my team, my family, sila ‘yung nagpakita at nagparamdam sa akin na [I] really deserved that spot. ‘Kunin mo na. Binigay nila ‘yan sa’yo kasi alam nilang kaya mo at dapat mong tanggapin nang buong puso (With the help of my group, my team, my family, they made me feel I really deserved that spot. The project was offered to me since they knew I could do it, so I should accept it wholeheartedly).” In a separate video, the four other members of SB19 — Justin, Pablo, Ken and Josh — were profuse in their praise for Ajero, attesting to his passion for excellence and fun but committed attitude toward work, which they said would be of immense benefit to the artists he’d be handling on The Voice Generations. “Yan ang Coach Stell namin! (That’s our Coach Stell!),” said SB19’s leader Pablo. Despite coaching for The Voice Generations and the possibility of being offered more solo activities, Ajero vowed that SB19 will always be his main priority. Asked about his mentorship style, Ajero said he wants to keep it simple and chill while also remembering his roots when he was starting out. “I give them time to adjust at isapuso muna nila kung ano ‘yung sinabi ko… Ayoko po kasi nila maramdaman ‘yung pressure from me as their coach (I give my artists time to adjust and take what I said to heart. I don’t want them to feel pressured as their coach),” he said, explaining that he doesn’t want to stress his talents to be perfect from the get-go. Viewers may tune in every Sunday to watch Ajero’s entertaining and substantive coaching in The Voice Generations, along with award-winning singer and dancer Billy Crawford, Parokya ni Edgar frontman Chito Miranda and Asia’s Limitless Star Julie Anne San Jose as his fellow coaches. QC supports renaming two roads after late Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago
Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte on Sunday said they welcomed the Senate's approval of a measure renaming Agham and BIR Roads after the late Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago. "Buong puso po nating sinusuportahan ang hakbang na ito ng Senado na ipangalan kay dating Senador Miriam Defensor-Santiago ang dalawang kalsada ng ating lungsod," Belmonte said. "Napakalaki pong karangalan para sa ating siyudad na dalhin ang pangalan ng ating senadora na walang takot na lumaban kontra katiwalian at tumayo para sa kapakanan at karapatan ng taumbayan," she added. With 22 affirmative votes and zero negative votes or abstention, the Senate approved on third and final reading House Bill 7413 seeking to rename the roadways of Agham Road and BIR Road to “Senator Miriam P. Defensor-Santiago Avenue." Santiago, who passed away in September 2016 after a long battle with lung cancer, held various positions in three branches of government. She served as presiding judge of the Quezon City Regional Trial Court and worked as Commissioner of the Bureau of Immigration (BI) and Secretary of the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR). She also served as Senator for three terms. “Siya rin ang una nating Asian judge na nahalal sa International Criminal Court, unang Pilipino na napili bilang commissioner para sa International Development Organization at nagsilbi rin bilang Legal Officer ng UN High Commission for Refugees sa Geneva, Switzerland. Patunay ang lahat ng kanyang pwestong hinawakan kung gaano siya kagaling. Nararapat lamang na mabigyang-halaga ang kanyang pagiging mahusay na lingkod-bayan,”Belmonte said. For her “…bold and moral leadership in cleaning up a graft-ridden government agency”, Defensor-Santiago received the Magsaysay Award for Government Service, known as the Asian equivalent of the Nobel Prize, in 1988. Why haven’t we gotten our ‘pangarap na Oscar’?
In Jules Katanyag’s raunchy horror-comedy Ang Pangarap Kong Oskars, from Mavx productions (now showing in cinemas), the eccentric director DMZ (Joross Gamboa) screams, “I want actors, not celebrities!” He and producer friend Bobby B (Paolo Contis) are gunning for the elusive Oscar trophy, or “Oskar,” via their dream movie project. Unable to fund their film, they get someone to produce it — but they have to compromise. The daughter of the producer, who is terrible at acting, has to be in it. They also want a big-budget movie that involves aswangs (special effects would cost gazillions), but they get “lucky” because Bobby B manages to hire actual local aswangs — mananganggal et al. The advanced screening held last 23 June was followed by a mediacon where Contis was in a fight-or-flight mode all throughout, with some press members squeezing into the conversation the controversies surrounding the prolific actor. But it was boring the lights out of me. Not much discussion on the film itself: the creative process, the craft. It’s all personality-based. An ingrown nail is more fascinating to me than Contis’ love life and his Eat Bulaga stint. But this is showbiz, the Internet is a vulture preying on rumors and controversies and a celebrity’s life is converted into views, comments, likes and shares. [caption id="attachment_152144" align="aligncenter" width="1600"] PAOLO Contis’ ‘Eat Bulaga!’ co-hosts Kokoy De Santos, Buboy Villar, Cassy Legaspi, Alexa Miro, Kimpoy de Leon and Mavy Legaspi attended the movie’s premiere last week.[/caption] Big event But at least the Oscars was discussed a bit. Since we started submitting to the Oscars in 1953, why haven’t we even been shortlisted? Katanyag’s directorial debut triggered thoughts in me about the Oscar dream. Sure, a subset of Filipino film professionals and critics spit at the Oscars as if it is the worst thing in the world. Still, no one can deny it’s a big event and it has some pretty great movies on its nominations list. The Oscars is an international media magnet. Imagine a Pinoy filmmaker going up the stage — for the first time in history — to take home the Best International Film award (or Best Director award), catapulting them to global fame and putting our country on the map of quality cinema. At the mediacon, someone asked the two actors about the possibility of an Oscar for the country. “Yes, possible… Naniniwala ako na kailangan ng buong suporta ng buong bansa. Una sa lahat, funding para sa mismong pelikula, magandang-magandang proyekto, at, again, kailangan ng campaign. So kailangan ng budget,” Contis said. “Actually, maganda maisabatas ‘yung support sa industry… Parang katulad sa ibang bansa, suportado talaga ng government. Kaya talaga napo-promote eh. Kasama napo-promote ang country,” said Gamboa. [caption id="attachment_152145" align="aligncenter" width="590"] PHOTOGRAPHS COURTESY OF mavx productions(FROM left) Joross Gamboa, Paolo Contis and Kate Alejandrino in a scene from ‘Ang Pangarap Kong Oskars.’[/caption] Dark side Personally, I believe it is the dark side of the Filipino mentality that hinders us from getting the elusive Oscar. Great stories need no huge budget. Asghar Farhadi’s A Separation cost roughly $800,000. Nomadland, Moonlight and Call Me By Your Name are also some of the small-budget films that took home the Oscars. The “palakasan” system, the politics, corruption and chika play a major contribution. The Filipino crab mentality, deeply embedded in our culture, is also to blame. If it happens in your office or organization, of course it also happens in the film industry. There are plenty of untapped talents — promising filmmakers and creatives who never get an iota of a chance in a dog-eat-dog industry. The big people would rather pick their “tropa” or “bata” even if said people are untalented. Then, there are award-giving bodies driven by political agenda, granting awards to butt-ugly films to fight for their personal cause. Plus, Pinoys are celebrity-obsessed. Filipino moviegoers will watch Pinoy movies only if their idols are in them. Movies with unknown actors? These are snubbed. Most resort to Koreanovelas because they love the content and the storytelling — bonus is the fact that most Pinoys find Koreans attractive. We also lack originality and a real cinematic identity. Mainstream fare is heavily influenced by Hollywood, or we adapt Korean plots. Others even downright copy plots and dialogue from American films. Where are the unique stories? They are mostly found in indie fests, in Cinemalaya, where the best of the best can be found. Politics has also split the Filipino film industry. A movie will be bashed even before its release because it features actors or directors who campaigned for a politician the critics oppose. Then there are budget constraints, forcing productions to shoot in a matter of days, so everything is rushed. The result? Crude high school projects. What also irks me is how the industry almost demands or begs “support” (i.e. buy tickets to local movies). A ticket price, which is P500 average, is equivalent to a minimum-wage earner’s daily salary. We do not part with our money just because you said so. Show me an impressive trailer first. Jaded audience The Filipino audience is now jaded given the same old crappy local content — especially after being exposed to content worldwide through affordable streaming subscriptions. Where do you think Pinoys would spend their hard-earned cash if they desperately need entertainment? On a locally produced theatrical release that has a plot that they have seen a thousand times? Or a subscription to a streamer with more content to choose from? They can also get the cheapest: internet data for unlimited short-form entertainment in TikTok and social media. Also, this industry hates honest criticism. They feel that negative reviews are personal attacks on filmmakers. This mindset is not progressive at all. I believe in the talent of the Filipino creative. It’s just that if this toxic culture continues and the obsession with personalities versus the art of cinema continues, we will be left behind in the film arena. This is no longer just about winning the Oscars, or at least getting nominated. This is about acknowledging our dirt and learning to triumph over self-interest, politics and envy for the sake of Philippine cinema. But I guess, that’s a dream that is never going to happen soon. It’s already in our DNA. The post Why haven’t we gotten our ‘pangarap na Oscar’? appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
