The NBA’s showcase day - Christmas - has arrived

By Tim Reynolds, Associated Press The MVP is playing. So are the reigning champions, north of the border. And out in LA, the NBA’s newest dynamic duos will square off as well. On the 65th day of the season, with 454 games — more than one-third of the schedule — already in the books, the NBA’s unofficial start date has arrived. The annual Christmas Day quintupleheader of games is Wednesday (Thursday, PHL time), the day when the casual fan typically turns his or her attention toward the NBA. “It’s going to be cool, man,” said Toronto guard Kyle Lowry, who’ll be making his Christmas debut. “It’s going to be very cool. I’ve always watched it on TV ever since I was a young child. And it’s going to be awesome to step foot on that floor on Christmas Day, have my family and friends around and have the whole world watching.” The good news from a ratings perspective: Four of the Eastern Conference’s five best teams so far are on the schedule, all playing each other. The bad news: The two worst teams in the Western Conference so far also are on the schedule. But LeBron James and Anthony Davis’ first Christmas as Los Angeles Lakers teammates — facing off against the crosstown rival Clippers — should certainly draw plenty of eyeballs. “I hope everybody has a great holiday and spends some time with their families, but it’s about the next opponent in front of us,” Lakers coach Frank Vogel said. “We have to get a win.” The other matchups: Boston goes to Toronto in the NBA’s first Christmas game in Canada, followed by Milwaukee visiting Philadelphia, Houston going to Golden State, the Lakers-Clippers contest and then a nightcap between New Orleans and a Denver team led by Nikola Jokic and off to the best start in franchise history at 20-8. “You’re always told that the best teams play on Christmas, the All-Star players play on Christmas and the whole world is watching this game,” said Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo, the league’s reigning MVP who has even better numbers this year than he did a year ago. The potential certainly exists for some playoff-preview matchups. It’s not a stretch to think that the Raptors and Celtics or 76ers and Bucks will wind up meeting in a best-of-seven come April or May. And the same holds true in Los Angeles, where the Clippers and Lakers might be the best of the West. The Lakers have Davis and James. The Clippers now have Paul George and two-time NBA Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard. Those two pairings shook up the league’s landscape considerably when they came together this past summer, and so far with the Lakers at 24-6 and the Clippers at 22-10, neither side has much to complain about. “I think we’re good,” George said. “I think we’re good.” The Clippers are 10-3 in games where both Leonard and George start. Davis and James are one of two duos where both are averaging more than 25 points per game; Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins in Minnesota are the other. The pairing of James and Davis has looked spectacular at times already. If there was any confusion about whether those two superstar talents could work together, those questions have been answered. “We know what the end goal is,” Davis said. “And when you have guys like that, with veteran leadership, when everyone is locked in to our goal, it’s easy for us to jell together.” James puts it even more simply. “It’s about getting better, each and every day,” James said. Christmas is where last year’s Lakers season went wrong — they were fourth in the West, then James got hurt on Dec. 25 and LA went on a free fall out of the playoff picture. And injuries will affect some of what the league gets to display on Christmas this year as well. Golden State has been doomed by injuries all season, with no Klay Thompson and no Stephen Curry for much of this season. New Orleans was picked to be part of the showcase day because of No. 1 overall pick Zion Williamson, who has yet to appear in a regular-season game — his summer league was cut short by injury, and a stellar preseason ended the same way. And Toronto is missing several top players right now, including Pascal Siakam and Marc Gasol. But make no mistake: The Raptors have been waiting a long time to be part of NBA Christmas. Wednesday is their first time on the holiday schedule since 2001. “It’ll be interesting,” Toronto coach Nick Nurse said. “I wish we had more of our regular guys playing in it, but we’ve got to go play the game nevertheless. So we’ll see. I think it’ll be fun. I’m getting a lot of messages from back home. Everybody’s going to be watching.”.....»»

Brown scores 30, Celtics beat Raptors 118-102

By Ian Harrison, Associated Press TORONTO (AP) — Boston’s Jaylen Brown celebrated Christmas with something he had never enjoyed before: a road win at Toronto. Brown scored 30 points, Kemba Walker had 22 and the Celtics beat the Raptors 118-102 Wednesday (Thursday, PHL time) in the first Christmas Day NBA game played in Canada. “It was good to get a win here on Christmas,” said Brown, who made five 3-pointers and shot 10 for 13 from the field. “I’ve never won here period, so it was great to just get one.” Enes Kanter had 12 points and 11 rebounds as the Celtics snapped an eight-game losing streak north of the border and became the first Atlantic Division opponent to win in Toronto in more than four years. The Celtics have won four straight to improve to 8-2 in December. Boston’s Gordon Hayward returned to the starting lineup after missing the past three games because of a sore left foot. He scored 14 points in 26 minutes. “It’s still a little sore but it’s playable,” Hayward said. “It’s good, it’s good.” Fred VanVleet scored 27 points in the Raptors' second straight loss, and Chris Boucher had a career-high 24. “We weren’t quite physical enough, I thought, for most stretches of the game,” Toronto coach Nick Nurse said. The Raptors are 2-2 since losing center Marc Gasol (left hamstring), guard Norman Powell (left shoulder) and forward Pascal Siakam (groin) to injuries. Nurse had no update on the status of the trio, but acknowledged their absence is making life difficult. “Scoring is not very easy for us right now,” Nurse said. “It’s tough.” Toronto had gone an NBA-record 34 games between home losses to division foes. The Raptors’ last home loss to an Atlantic team was a 111-109 defeat to the New York Knicks on Nov. 10, 2015. Kyle Lowry scored 14 points and Serge Ibaka had 12 for Toronto. The Raptors shot 8 for 23 from 3-point range. Kanter arrived dressed in a black t-shirt that read ‘Freedom for ALL’ in white letters. He played outside the United States for the first time since visiting Toronto with the Knicks on Nov. 10, 2018. “Definitely amazing,” a smiling Kanter said. “I just can’t describe it with words. Just going out there was more than just a basketball game. For me, it was just going out there and living this freedom.” Kanter’s outspoken criticism of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an's government led to his passport being revoked in 2017. Turkish prosecutors have accused Kanter of membership in a terror organization and issued an international warrant for his arrest. Kanter did not travel with the Knicks to London last January because he feared he could be killed over his opposition to Erdo?an. After being traded to Portland in February, he did not join the Trail Blazers for their March 1 game at Toronto. The Raptors jumped out to a 10-0 lead as the Celtics missed their first five shots of the game, leading to a Boston timeout with 10:03 left in the opening quarter. After the stoppage, the Celtics outscored Toronto 28-9 to lead 28-19 after one. “They hit us early but I thought we recovered well,” Celtics coach Brad Stevens said. Brown made all five of his field goal attempts in the third, including three from long range, and scored 16 points. Boston led 88-69 through three quarters. TIP-INS Celtics: G Marcus Smart (eye infection) traveled to Toronto but was not active. Smart has missed the past seven games. … F Grant Williams dislocated his right index finger in the second quarter but returned before halftime. … F Jayson Tatum shot 1 for 10 in the first half. He finished 5 for 18 and scored 11 points. … Boston scored 11 points off seven Toronto turnovers in the first. Raptors: Toronto made a season-worst seven 3-pointers in a Dec. 9 (Dec. 10, PHL time) win at Chicago. … Toronto’s only previous Christmas Day game was a 102-94 loss at New York in 2001. HOME SWEET HOME The road team won a Boston-Toronto game for the first time in 13 meetings. TAKE A CHANCE Boston outscored Toronto 24-4 in second-chance points. HOT SHOTS The Celtics shot 46 for 92 (50%). Boston is 8-0 this season when shooting 50% or better. UP NEXT Celtics: Host Cleveland on Friday (Saturday, PHL time). Raptors: Visit Boston on Saturday (Sunday, PHL time)......»»

Embiid stars as 76ers beat Bucks 121-109

By Dan Gelston, Associated Press PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Joel Embiid outplayed Giannis Antetokounmpo in Philadelphia's first home Christmas game in 31 years, collecting 31 points and 11 rebounds to help the 3-point happy 76ers beat the Milwaukee Bucks 121-109 on Wednesday (Thursday, PHL time). Tobias Harris sank five 3s, Josh Richardson and Furkan Korkmaz each had four and even Embiid hit three as part of Philly's season-high 21 3s (on 44 attempts) against a Bucks team that had the best record in the NBA. Harris and Al Horford hit 3s over the final 90 seconds to push back a late Bucks run, and the Sixers improved to 16-2 at home. There was a charged atmosphere for the anticipated matchup featuring Embiid and Ben Simmons taking on Khris Middleton and Antetokounmpo. Fans dressed as elves, wore ugly sweaters and held signs that said all they wanted for Christmas was a Sixers win. They got it, with Embiid using the national showcase to play like an MVP in a dominant first half that helped the Sixers take the biggest halftime lead (21 points) against the Bucks under coach Mike Budenholzer. Embiid scored 23 points and was disruptive defensively, holding Antetokounmpo to 4-for-14 shooting in the half. The Sixers hit 11 3s in the half and made the NBA-best Bucks (27-5) look like anything but Eastern Conference contenders. Embiid stood firm under the basket, arms extended sky high on one Antetokounmpo drive in transition. Embiid absorbed the contact and the "Greek Freak" lost control of the ball, one of six Milwaukee turnovers at the break. 76ers coach Brett Brown said before the game the Bucks were "NBA royalty." They have a ways to go before they're crowned tops in the East. With fans chanting "Trust the Process!" on Embiid free throws, the All-Star center was worthy of the holiday highlight video. "I reminded our team, people in America have more appreciation for this day in the NBA," Brown said. "We're grateful for the opportunity." The Sixers aced their test against the NBA's best. "I'm not going to overvalue one game," 76ers general manager Elton Brand said, "but it's a good barometer." It wasn't just Embiid that flustered the Bucks. Korkmaz was knocked on his rear and buried Philly's 16th 3 of the game late in the third for a 93-67 lead that had the crowd going wild. Korkmaz's shot capped a string of 3s on five straight Sixers baskets. Mike Scott, the reserve better known for his man-of-the-people popup appearances, became the seventh Sixer to hit a 3 for a 98-70 lead. The 76ers led 100-73 through three. Middleton scored 31 points and Antetokounmpo had 18 points and 14 rebounds. Antetokounmpo got flustered over a perceived missed call and was whistled for a technical in the fourth. Brand held a state-of-the-franchise press conference before the game and preached chemistry and continuity would eventually get the Sixers among the best in the East, a conference many pundits picked them to win. "We are going to get there," Brand said. "Home-court advantage is important but having Joel healthy in the playoff in May, June, that is important to us. We could still grow into a team that could be a No. 1 seed." For a game, the 76ers sure played like one. TIP-INS Bucks: The Bucks trailed by 29 and held only an early three-point lead. 76ers: Embiid had his seventh game this season with 30 points and 10 rebounds. He scored 20 points before halftime for the second time this season. ... Simmons had 15 points and 14 assists. BANNER TIME Bucks guard Donte DiVincenzo admired the 2016 and 2018 Villanova national championship banners that hang in the rafters. The former Wildcats star was named Final Four Most Outstanding Player in the '18 title run. "There's two of them things. That's tough," he said. TRADE MARKET "I always look at opportunities to improve the team. That is my job to make sure Brett and the group have the pieces to compete for a championship. Right now, I am definitely encouraged," Brand said. UP NEXT Bucks: Play Friday (Saturday, PHL time) at Atlanta. 76ers: Open a four-game trip Friday (Saturday, PHL time) at Orlando......»»

UST’s Nonoy attends graduation then plays in All-Star Game

Mark Nonoy is University of Sto. Tomas' lone representative in the 2019 Filoil Flying V Preseason All-Star Game. When the showcase tipped off inside the Filoil Flying V Centre on Friday, however, the prized prospect was nowhere to be found. As it turns out, Nonoy was attending his high school graduation inside the UST campus in Espana. Once the program wrapped up at around 4:00 p.m., though, the 19-year-old made his way to the Filoil All-Star Game. "Gusto ko po talaga kasing ma-experience na makasama ko yung mga idol ko sa college at gusto ko rin po talagang makakuha ng experience sa kanila," he shared. And to do so, he booked an Angkas and rode on a motorcycle all the way to San Juan. Moments before the final frame of the game, Nonoy finally arrived at the venue. Not long after, he was sent in by head coach Franz Pumaren to help holding off the NCAA All-Stars. The 5-foot-8 playmaker did that and more, scoring eight points on top of three assists and three rebounds in 10 minutes of action as the UAAP All-Stars got the better of the NCAA All-Stars, 86-83. Of course, he was going to do what he has long been doing - go to work with or without warmups. "Iniisip ko lang na parehas kami pag nasa court ako. Kung anong matutulong ko sa teammates ko, yun ang gagawin ko," he said. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

In game and in career, Paniamogan just kept shooting

A high-scoring guard reared in the Jose Rizal University tradition of high-scoring guards, Philip Paniamogan already had the most notable strength to make it into the PBA. Picked up in 2014 by a Globalport team that itself had a glut of high-scoring guards, however, Paniamogan had no space to showcase that most notable strength. And so, the Cagayan de Oro native found himself sailing away from the Batang Pier after only a couple of conferences. Fast forward one year and Paniamogan is back with a vengeance in Asia’s first pay-for-play league. Erupting for a career-best 25 points by making good on all but two of his field goals on Wednesday, he shot Mahindra to only its second win in the season. As it turns out, the now 25-year-old had the green light from coach Chris Gavina. “Sabi kasi ni coach sa amin, kung sino yung mainit, suportahan namin. E nung naka-shoot ako ng three points, sinunod-sunod ko na,” he shared. He then continued, “Sabi nila tumira e so may lisensya na ako. Kaya ayun, tinira ko and sumu-shoot naman.” Gavina was nothing but glad to have given the green light to his surprising star for the game. “He came up big today, but honestly, I really saw it coming from Christmas day. Even during the break, he was one of the guys who was keeping on working,” he said. For Paniamogan, of course, the breakout was made all the more special after all he had gone through. “Siyempre, ang hirap lalo kapag pabalik-balik sa PBA, pero ‘di naman ako nawalan ng pag-asa. Dasal lang talaga panlaban ko,” he expressed. After his time with Globalport, the former Heavy Bomber went back to the PBA D-League with Racal. He then played there for majority of last year before a rebuilding Floodbuster squad came calling in the offseason. Still, nothing was assured to him then. As he put it, “Sabi ko nun, wala namang mawawala pag nagsikap e. Kaya nung tinawagan ako, binigay ko lahat ng best ko, lahat ng maitutulong ko.” He then continued, “Buti naman nagkaroon sila ng tiwala sa akin dahan-dahan. Kaya sobra-sobrang pasasalamat ko sa kanila.” Now he has busted out, Paniamogan still isn’t looking that too far ahead. “Tignan natin kasi ‘di ko naman madikta na sakin na lahat next game. As of now, ako yung nag-init so thankful lang ako dun na nagtiwala sila sa akin,” he expressed. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo. .....»»
