Top China beermaker opens probe after worker urination video
One of China's biggest beermakers said it had opened an investigation after a video appearing to show a factory employee urinating on raw ingredients went viral this week. The clip, published online on Thursday, purportedly shows a male worker at a Tsingtao Brewery Co. warehouse clambering into a high-walled container and relieving himself onto its contents. The footage circulated widely on Chinese social media, racking up tens of millions of views on the popular platform Weibo. Tsingtao said on Friday that it had contacted the police over the incident and an investigation was ongoing. "Our company attaches high importance to the relevant video that emerged from Tsingtao Brewery No. 3 on October 19," the beermaker said in a statement. "We reported the incident to the police at the earliest opportunity, and public security organs are involved in the investigation," it added. "At present, the batch of malt in question has been completely sealed. The company continues to strengthen its management procedures and ensure product quality." Many social media users reacted to the video with anger and voiced support for one of China's best-known beverage brands. "I suggest the company takes this man to court and gets him to pay compensation for the damages," read one popular Weibo response to the company's statement. "Investigate this thoroughly! Always stand up for our national champion brands!" wrote another user. Hong Kong-listed Tsingtao is China's second-largest brewer, and its tall bottles of crisp lager are perennial fridge-fillers in bars across East Asia. In recent years, the company has sought to capitalise on the changing tastes of younger Chinese drinkers by diversifying into craft ales and other products. Some web users were not about to pass up the chance to make a wry quip about the country's famously light and fizzy mass-market brews. "I've always said the beer here is like horse pee. Turns out I was wrong," one of them commented. "Thanks, I think I'll have wine instead," quipped another. Chot sees solid turnout
The buildup of the Gilas Pilipinas team tasked to regain supremacy of the Southeast Asian Games next month in Cambodia intensifies this Wednesday. Head coach Chot Reyes was thinking of holding a workout Monday but he opted to call it off and scheduled a scrimmage instead on Wednesday so all the invited players can attend. Key players from newly-crowned Philippine Basketball Association Governors’ Cup champion TNT and Barangay Ginebra are expected to show up as the preparations for the 5 to 17 May sportsfest enters the twilight zone. “We’re not yet complete (by Monday), so most likely we will hold it on Wednesday,” Reyes said. ‘Hopefully I’ll get selected.’ Whether this is going to be the start of the daily workout remains to be seen. “That’s the plan,” Jong Uichico, another Gilas assistant coach, said. Mikey Williams, who just won his second title and second Finals Most Valuable Player award in the process, will lead the Gilas pool players coming from TNT and he will be joined by Calvin Oftana and Poy Erram. For Oftana, getting selected and being able to play for Gilas in the SEA Games will be a dream come true. “Hopefully I’ll get selected,” said Oftana, who just won his first championship in the PBA right in his first finals appearance. Roger Pogoy, who was originally included in the expanded pool, will miss the action in the SEA Games as he suffered a fractured pinky which will sideline him for the next six weeks. Justin Brownlee, the beloved Barangay Ginebra import, and the Philippine team’s newest naturalized player, will once again backstop Gilas’ campaign along with fellow Gin Kings Scottie Thompson, Governors’ Cup Best Player of the Conference winner Christian Standhardinger, highly-athletic wingman Jamie Malonzo, Jeremiah Gray and returning 6-foot-9 center/forward Japeth Aguilar. Aguilar is coming off a knee injury which forced him to miss the sixth and final window of the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers held a few months ago at the Philippine Arena. “In the meantime, it’s going to be back to work for us, Justin, Scottie, Jamie, Christian and hopefully Japeth, he can continue to get better,” said Ginebra coach Tim Cone, who also serves as one of the assistant coaches of Reyes. “It’s back to work for us, so no rest for the weary.” But Gilas also have several other prospects outside of the two protagonists in the recent championship series. San Miguel Beer stars CJ Perez, Marcio Lassiter and Chris Ross are eager play as well as Arvin Tolentino of NorthPort, a long-time member of the pool. Meralco stars Chris Newsome and Aaron Black had also worked out in the previous training session, so as brothers Michael and Ben Philipps from La Salle and incoming Ateneo freshman Mason Amos. Last year, the Philippines was dethroned as king of the SEA Games after losing the gold medal match to Indonesia in Hanoi. The post Chot sees solid turnout appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Cone rewards Japeth with more minutes ‘to get him in shape’
Japeth Aguilar topscored Barangay Ginebra with 20 points against Meralco. (PBA Images) Some were probably wondering why coach Tim Cone kept Japeth Aguilar on the floor even though Barangay Ginebra San Miguel already had the game won against Meralco Sunday night. “I left him out there the whole time, just so to get him in shape,” Cone said after Ginebra’s 105-91 victory at the Angeles University Foundation Sports and Cultural Center. Aguilar finished with a game-high 20 points, scoring nine during a nine-minute appearance in the fourth quarter, something Cone said is something he rarely does. But Cone explained that having such exposure even in a blowout contest could bode well for Aguilar in the long run since the Finals Most Valuable Player of last season’s Governors’ Cup entered the bubble only days before the restart. And it has resulted in averages of 9.0 points and 3.0 rebounds in wins over NLEX and Blackwater. “We really don’t have time to get him in shape by working out because the games come so fast,” said Cone. “Though we have a big margin, I wasn’t taking Japeth out. That’s unusual for me, but I saw it as a purpose and to stay on the floor and keep working. Hopefully that will make him better into our next game.” Ginebra is hoping that would be the case as it enters a stretch of difficult games against tough opponents. The Kings return to action on Wednesday against the Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters, who opened the conference with two straight wins. Next is Ginebra’s “Bubble Clasico” showdown with Magnolia on Sunday followed by a clash with another sister team in defending five-time champion San Miguel Beer on Oct. 30......»»

PBA dreams within reach at Letran, says ex-UST Tiger Rhenz Abando
RHENZ ABANDO (UAAP image) Rhenz Abando says that his transfer to defending NCAA champion Letran from embattled University of Santo Tomas is more than just a school-to-school move, but one that would likely benefit his career in the long run because of the opportunities he thinks he would get with the Knights. Abando – one of three former UST players who changed address from España to Intramuros – met Tuesday with Knights mentor Bonnie Tan and Alfrancis Chua, sports director of San Miguel Miguel Corporation, which backs the school’s basketball program. “May mga opportunities kasi sa Letran, mga coaches nila nasa PBA na din,” says Abando, referring to Tan – team manager of GlobalPort – and Barangay Ginebra San Miguel guard LA Tenorio, who is part of Letran’s coaching staff, in an interview Wednesday with Manila Bulletin. “Magiging malaking tulong sa improvement ko as a player, siempre goal ko is makatuntong din sa PBA. Saka ang Letran Dominican school din naman kaya mas pinili ko na doon lumipat.” Aside from Tan and Tenorio, there’s also Chua, who coached PBL Grand Slam champion Stag in the mid-90s and the PBA teams of Tanduay, Sta. Lucia Realty and Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, also represents SMC, which owns Ginebra, Magnolia Hotshots and San Miguel Beer in the pros, and volleyball team Petron Blaze in the PSL. Chua, in an interview Tuesday, said that Letran players are well taken care of by SMC similar to what they do with professional athletes, exactly what was assured Abando, Brent Paraiso and Ira Bataller. “Siguro naniniwala sila sa system ng Letran at sa pag-aalaga ng San Miguel sa players. Alam nila kung paano kami magpatakbo ng team,” said Chua, also the governor of Ginebra in the PBA board. “Hindi sila nagkamali sa pagpili sa Letran, kasi kung paano kami mag-alaga ng players sa professional, ganun din sa collegiate level. Malaking karagdagan sila sa team, siguro mas sasaya ang mga ka-Arriba natin.” Abando begged off to comment when asked the other schools that sought his services, although sources said Letran’s arch nemesis San Beda University, as well as De La Salle University, tried to recruit the La Union native. He, however, may have indirectly answered questions of offers from a UAAP school when he said he doesn’t want to play in the same league where his former alma mater is a member. “Ayoko na din kasi maglaro sa UAAP dahil ayoko din makalaban ang UST,” said Abando. “Baka kasi kapag madinig ko yung “GO USTe” baka play ng UST gawin ko or depensahan ko mga kakampi ko. Kaya din mas pinili ko ang NCAA kesa sa UAAP ako maglaro,” Abando added in jest. The decision to leave UST was not an easy thing to do, according to Abando, but he thanked his mother Lorena for the guidance, saying: “Mother ko yung tumulong sa akin… hindi madali e.” Abando, Paraiso and Bataller need to serve one-year residency as per NCAA guidelines for transferees. After that, both Abando and Paraiso have two years to play while Bataller has three more. Although the addition of the 6-foot-5 Bataller and the 6-foot-2 Paraiso are considered important for the Knights, it was the recruitment of the 6-foot-4 Abando that really made the difference. After two seasons with the Philippine College Science and Technology in Calasiao, Pangasinan, Abando transferred to UST in 2019 and played one season – the 82nd UAAP where he helped the Tigers reach the final against eventual champion Ateneo Blue Eagles. i.....»»
Air21 s first trophy is Coach Bo Perasol s favorite in the PBA
In his years in the PBA, Bo Perasol has coached some pretty memorable teams. Coach Bo was at the helm when Air21 made its PBA Finals appearance in 2008, taking Ginebra all the way to Game 7 before ultimately dropping the Fiesta Conference title. In 2012, Perasol and the Powerade put together a run for the ages as the no. 8 Tigers upset top-ranked B-Meg in the playoffs. Unfortunately, Powerade couldn't get past defending champion Talk 'N Text in the Philippine Cup Finals, losing the series in five. While both Finals series were certainly memorable despite unfavorable results, they're not Coach Bo's favorite PBA moment. "I think for me the most meaningful one was yung third place finish of Air21," Perasol said on Coaches Unfiltered, referring to the Express' perfomance in the 2006 Fiesta Conference. "That was our best finish since FedEx/Air21 joined the league. We beat Ginebra dati noon may battle for third pa eh," he added. The 2006 PBA season marked Perasol's first coaching stint in the PBA. In the Fiesta Conference, the Express were fifth entering the playoffs with a 9-7 record and took down San Miguel Beer and Talk 'N Text in the Wild Card and Quarterfinals respectively, both series going the distance. Air21 lost to Purefoods in the semifinals but edged Ginebra, 108-98, to claim their first trophy ever. "That established my position as a coach, you have to remember na syempre professional na yan eh. You have to establish yourself as a coach who can get wins for the franchise also," Coach Bo said. "Sa PBA wala naman pakiusapan pag matatalo ka eh, matatanggal ka talaga. So that was one of my favorite moments in that stint," Perasol added. — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»
The extreme former life of Ginebra star Scottie Thompson
(This story was originally published on February 23, 2017.) For a guard that stands barely above six feet, Scottie Thompson sure has a knack for gobbling up rebounds as if he's five to six inches taller. Through the elimination round of the 2017 PBA Philippine Cup, Scottie averaged 10.4 rebounds per game, good for fourth behind 6'11" June Mar Fajardo (16.0 rebounds), 6'9" Raymond Almazan (11.6 rebounds), and 6'5" Sean Anthony (10.7) rebounds. Again, Thompson stands barely above six feet, and he's a guard. With the sophomore star doing the dirty work down low, among other things, Brgy. Ginebra San Miguel is back in the PBA Finals. And before you accuse of Scottie having special powers or magnets or something because the ball almost always end up in his possession, Scottie does have a strange past that may explain his affinity for the extreme and hauling down rebounds and other stuff for the barangay. We're talking about volleyball, dance, drag racing with motorcycles, and BMX biking. Let Scottie explain for himself. "Varsity ako samin sa basketball pero ang dami kong sports. BMX. Di pa ako mahilig sa basketball nun," Thompson said, recalling his days growing up in Davao del Sur. "Kung ano sinasalihan ko nun—sayaw, volleyball. Kahit ano. Wow Scottie, BMX bicycles? Really? For those who may not be familiar with what those are, BMX bikes are those off-road sports bicycles that people mainly use to do crazy and fancy stunts. Turns out, the typically low-key Scottie was 'bout that life. And he has the scar to prove it. "Dito nga, natusok ako sa manibela," he said, pointing to a scar on his neck. "Wala eh, pinalipad ko. Tapos [inikot] ko yung manibela, pag land ko di na bumalik." "Tapos pag-uwi ko naka [takip damit sa leeg] ako kasi papagalitan ako," he added. After turning his back on the extreme, Scottie has had quite a basketball career, which is good news for Ginebra fans. So far in his young PBA stint, Thompson has been to the Finals in two out of four conferences, hoping to give the barangay back-to-back titles. "Unang-una nagpapa-salamat ako kasi youngest ako dito uli," Scottie said. Panagalawa ko na to, sobrang blessed and sobrang thankful kay God." In the Philippine Cup, the Gin Kings now face two-time defending champion San Miguel Beer, a matchup that hasn't been seen in 10 years or since Mark Caguioa and Jay-jay Helterbrand led Ginebra in a six-game conquest of Danny Seigle and the Beermen. While he was already a basketball fan then, Scottie couldn't even remember if he even watched that series. He was still probably busy with his bike. "Malamang nasa Digos pa ako nun. High School, mga first year pa ako, magse-second year," he said. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»
WHAT IF... Perez wasn t suspended for NCAA 94 Finals Game 1
History lesson: After missing out on the Final Four for its first six seasons in the NCAA, Lyceum of the Philippines University made back-to-back trips to the Finals in Seasons 93 and 94. The Season 93 Finals, the school's first-ever, wound up as a heartbreaking loss to eventual champion San Beda University. Memorably, the Pirates won each and every one of their 18 games in the elimination round - the first-ever team to do so in the Grand Old League - before going winless in their last two games. Of course, playoff experience and championship heart proved to be the difference for the Red Lions. In that light, Season 94 should have been a different story for LPU. Only, it wasn't. San Beda yet again swept the upstarts via convincing victories. And from Game 1, the Red Lions already knew it was all over. "Oo naman. Siyempre, mag-iiba laban kung nandun siya," then-King Lion Robert Bolick in last week's The Prospects Pod. "Sa part din namin, wala siya so tapos na. Tapos na yung laban." The "siya" he was referring to? CJ Perez, Season 93 MVP and Season 94 Mythical selection, who was not in action and not even at the venue for the series-opener. Apparently, Perez failed to notify the NCAA about his application for the 2018 PBA Draft and was therefore sanctioned with a suspension for Game 1 of the Finals. But what if he were there - there, ready and raring to play in the opener of the series where he and all of LPU were seeking redemption? The now-26-year-old had no doubt that if that were the case, the Pirates would have put up a much fiercer fight. As he put it, "Siguro, mas ginanahan pa yung mga kasama ko. Nung natambakan na kasi nung Game 1, parang nanginig na yung mga tuhod ng Game 2 eh." Sans Perez, the maroon and grey fell victim to a 19-9 start by their opponents and never recovered. Final score read 73-60 in favor of San Beda. If the 6-foot-2 playmaker were there, Cameroonian powerhouse Mike Nzeusseu would not be their top-scorer as the former had averaged 18.7 points in the prior 18 games. Of course, defensive-minded coach Boyet Fernandez would have also adjusted accordingly and the Red Lions, just like they did in last year's championship round, would have put their full focus on Perez. Still, a full-force LPU side would, for sure, have posed more problems for San Beda. In the end, Mendiola's dynasty would have still have all the answers - what with Bolick and Javee Mocon just playing their best basketball that season. That momentum would then carry over to Game 2 where the Red Lions still sweep the Pirates for their fourth championship in a row. In terms of result, Perez's presence would not have changed a thing. Nonetheless, his being there would have made for much more must-see TV. Also, his being there would not have forced him to just drown his sorrows all by his lonesome. "Ang mindset ko pa rin bago nun, tulog pa rin nang maaga para handa, pero nung sinabi na ngang 'di ako pwede maglaro, sabi ko na lang, 'Hala, ready na ako eh,'" he recalled. He then continued, through chuckles, "Nung araw na yun, nasa dorm ako, nakaupo sa couch, nanood ng laro. Nakailang beer nga ako nun." --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»
Ross hoping for another Gilas tour of duty
San Miguel Beer guard Chris Ross is more than willing to lend his services one more time for Gilas Pilipinas if given the chance. Speaking on the Athletes’ Tribune podcast, Ross said that he’s ready for another tour of duty in the Southeast Asian Games next year in Vietnam. “I’m only eligible for SEA Games and Asian Games those are the two (tournaments) they told me I’m eligible for. I’m 35 now but if they do pick me I’ll be ready,” said the Fil-American. The eight-time PBA champion realized his dream of donning the national colors last year when he helped Gilas Pilipinas cop the gold medal last year in the Manila edition of the biennial meet. It was an opportunity of a lifetime for Ross, who had difficulty landing a spot in team before mostly due to him not having PHI passport by the age of 16, when Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas decided to field an all-pro team. Although things are still uncertain if SBP will again send an all-pro team, an amateur squad or a selection of both to the SEA Games, which will be held November next year, Ross is confident that if chosen he can still bring the same energy and passion he gave in his first national team stint. “I mean, I take care of my body. I can go out there and run around with whoever you put in front of me or whoever I need to compete with. I’m confident in myself in that way,” he said. “But whoever they choose… I think Tab (Baldwin) is the head of Gilas right now. He’s a really smart basketball mind too. I’m sure he’ll pick the guys that will work in the slot,” Ross added. “If they end up do picking me or if they do pick me, if they want me to be around the team, I’ll be more than happy to lend my services and try to compete.” In his SEA Games stint, Ross didn’t need to score much in a stacked Gilas lineup but still contributed with 7.6 assists, 5.2 rebounds and 1.4 steals. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»
