The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines has approved the elevation of the Archdiocesan Shrine of the Black Nazarene, or Quiapo Church, to national shrine status. The CBCP made the announcement on Sunday during their 126th plenary assembly in Kalibo town, Aklan province. The approval of the petition to declare Quiapo Church as a national shrine was granted by Cardinal Jose Advincula of Manila as the CBCP bestowed upon Quiapo Church the title of “National Shrine of the Black Nazarene.” The CBCP made the announcement on Sunday during their 126th plenary assembly in Kalibo town, Aklan province. Quiapo Church is a prominent landmark in the heart of Manila and has been a center of devotion for Filipinos for many years and is home to the centuries-old and revered image of the Black Nazarene, which is a popular pilgrimage destination for devotees from all over the country. The CBCP said that the elevation of Quiapo Church to national shrine status was recognition of its “significant role in fostering a profound popular devotion to Jesus Christ and its cultural impact on the religious practices of Filipinos.” The Quiapo Church is the 29th national shrine in the Philippines.
