Vlad the Impaler steps out of Dracula’s shadow
Cloaked in a black cape like the infamous count himself, 10-year-old Niklas Schuetz runs through the dark corridors of a hilltop castle in search of the truth about Dracula. "He was a Romanian prince, not a vampire," said the schoolboy, as he tripped by torchlight through the nocturnal gloom of Forchtenstein Castle. The group is guided through the Austrian fortress and is eager to sink their teeth into the gripping life of Vlad Tepes, the notorious "Vlad the Impaler", whose descendants once held the Schloss. The castle is home to one of the few paintings of the cruel 15th-century prince, and this Halloween its curators are trying to bring the real historical figure out from the chilling shadow of the monster invented by the Irish writer Bram Stoker. Rather than being a ghoulish fiend, the real Vlad Tepes had for a "long time gone down in history as a positive figure" who courageously fought the Ottoman Turks, said the director of its collections, Florian Bayer. "More and more people are able to distinguish between the bloodsucking vampire and the historical figure," he said. Voivode Vlad III -- also known by his patronymic name Dracula derived from the Slavonic word for dragon -- once ruled over Wallachia, a Romanian-speaking vassal state of the Kingdom of Hungary. 'Forest' of the impaled Held as a child hostage of the sultan at the Ottoman court, he later turned against his former captors. In several hard-fought campaigns against the Turks, he struck fear into his enemies by impaling thousands of Turkish prisoners. This gruesomely slow death was also used against his internal rivals, like "the German merchants from neighbouring Transylvanian towns," historian Dan Ioan Muresan told AFP. Tepes was often depicted amidst a "forest" of impaled bodies. Yet despite his gory reputation, Vlad was a handsome devil and something of a ladykiller, according to Muresan. He was a "very handsome man with an imposing build", with long hair flowing over his Turkish-style kaftans adorned with diamonds. By marrying a cousin of the Hungarian king, he "gave rise to a branch from which the British royal family descends," the historian added. Indeed Britain's King Charles III has repeatedly boasted of their shared blood ties, saying that Transylvania runs through his veins. Communist marketing The gothic novel by Stoker published in 1897 helped kickstart the modern vampire genre. Dozens of films later, the fictional Dracula had transformed into a pop culture icon. "Until the 1960s, Romanians didn't associate the character imagined by Stoker with Vlad Tepes," said Bogdan Popovici, head of the national archives in the Transylvanian city of Brasov, home to some of the prince's manuscripts. "It was the Communists who started to commercialize it for the Western market to attract tourists," he said. While cashing in on selling the vampire myth to visitors, the regime of Romanian Communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu sought to resurrect Vlad as a national hero. Paradoxically, the Communist regime was careful in differentiating the real Dracula from its fictitious counterpart as it pursued its mission to wipe out pagan traditions. Tears of blood "Romanians have never recognized themselves in the character, which was born out of a foreign imagination and planted into an exotic reality," said Muresan. "It is being exploited as a kind of tourist trap," he said. The real Vlad never set foot in Romania's Bran Castle -- widely taken as the inspiration for the lair of Dracula -- but it hasn't stopped it from drawing visitors in their droves. Murdered by his own people in 1476 in the wake of a conspiracy, experts dispute the whereabouts of his remains to this day, with some claiming that his head was sent to the sultan in Constantinople to confirm his death. A recent Italian scientific study based on the analysis of the prince's handwritten letters found that Vlad probably suffered from haemolacria, indicating that he could shed tears of blood. The creepy detail is undoubtedly enough to keep the Dracula myth alive for some time yet. The post Vlad the Impaler steps out of Dracula’s shadow appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Session Road transforms to ‘Little Chinatown’
BAGUIO CITY — The Association of Baguio Chinese-Filipino Youth Inc. and the local government here is set to treat the residents and the visitors of the Summer Capital of the Philippines with a Chinese touch at the famous Session Road on 7 to 8 October 2023. This is part of the celebration of the Chinese 2023 Mid-Autumn Festival and the public will witness the “Little Chinatown Crawl” and mini Dice Game at Session Road. Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong in his Executive Order 138, series of 2023 allowed the closure of Session Road for two days to vehicular traffic for the staging of the Little Chinatown. Also known as the Mooncake Festival or Lantern Festival, the Mid-Autumn Festival is a traditional East Asian festival held on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, which usually falls in September or early October. “The Festival is a traditional and culturally significant celebration observed by Chinese communities around the world, including a sizable population of Filipino-Chinese in the City of Baguio,” said the mayor’s EO. The Baguio City Police Office is directed then to come up and implement a security and traffic management plan to reduce the road closure impact to the public as Session Road is a major route in the city. Meantime, the Baguio City Engineering Office is also asked to provide the manpower, equipment and devices for the closure of roads and rerouting of traffic. Second round of Fukushima wastewater release to start next week
Japan will begin releasing a second batch of wastewater from the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant from next week, its operator has said, an exercise that angered China and others when it began in August. On 24 August, Japan began discharging into the Pacific some of the 1.34 million tons of wastewater that has collected since a tsunami crippled the facility in 2011. "The inspections following the first release have been completed... The (second) discharge will start on 5 October," TEPCO said on Thursday. China banned all Japanese seafood imports after the first release, which ended on September 11, despite Tokyo's insistence that the operation poses no risk. Russia, whose relations with Japan are also frosty, is reportedly considering following suit on a seafood ban. In the first phase around 7,800 tons of water were released into the Pacific out of a planned total of 1.34 million tons, equivalent to more than 500 Olympic swimming pools. TEPCO says that the water has been filtered of all radioactive elements except tritium, which is within safe levels. That view is backed by the UN atomic agency. China has accused Japan of using the ocean like a "sewer", accusations echoed at the United Nations last week by Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare of the Solomon Islands, who has developed close relations with Beijing. The release, which is expected to take decades to complete, is aimed at making space to eventually begin removing the highly dangerous radioactive fuel and rubble from the wrecked reactors. "As was the case for the first discharge, we will continue to monitor the tritium levels. We will continue to inform the public in ways that are easy to understand based on scientific evidence," TEPCO official Akira Ono told reporters Thursday. Despite China's ban on Japanese seafood imports, Chinese boats are reportedly continuing to catch fish off Japan in the same areas that Japanese vessels operate. Rahm Emanuel, the US ambassador to Japan, last week posted photos of what he said were Chinese fishing boats off Japan on 15 September. "They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Chinese vessels fishing off Japan's coast on September 15th, post China's seafood embargo from the same waters," Emanuel said on social media platform X. Phl’s IT-BPM employee headcount surpasses global growth rate — IBPAP
With the continuous reputation being the world's second rank as IT-BPM hub next to India, the Philippine IT-BPM sector’s headcount continues to surge, now at 8.7 percent reaching a total of 1.70 million full-time employees and outperforming the global growth rate of 7.7 percent. This was revealed by IT and Business Process Association of the Philippines president and CEO Jack Madrid during the 15th International IT-BPM Summit at Okada Manila on Wednesday. Madrid said the Philippines also soared on the revenue front with a growth rate of 8.8 percent, which translates to an estimated $35.4 billion growth target for this year. Madrid said factors propelling the growth of the Philippine IT-BPM industry in 2023 include the country’s advantage, as US companies are increasingly redirecting work offshore, and they are showing a clear preference for the Philippines. “Our country has become a hub for high-quality IT and BPM services, attracting global giants and startups alike,” he said. Also, Madrid said the persistent talent gap in North America for IT-BPM services has driven companies to look beyond their borders for skilled professionals. “The Philippines has proven time and again that it can provide the talent pool that these companies need,” he added. Madrid also said the industry has strong government support, playing a crucial role in this growth story by instituting supportive remote and hybrid work policies. “These policies have not only helped companies adapt to the changing work landscape but have also attracted foreign investments. With the help of our allies and collaborators, we were able to put into motion programs that align with our acceleration levers and support our 2028 growth targets,” said Madrid. “Given this, our outlook for 2023 is bright—in fact, better than we initially projected—and we are committed to sustaining this trajectory of impactful and positive growth throughout the coming years,” he added. Madrid went on to report that from the start of 2022 until year-end of 2023, the IT-BPM sector expects to add 257,000 full-time employees to its headcount and $5.9 billion to its revenue, placing the Philippines firmly on track to meet its targets for 2028. He expounded by saying that these numbers indicate that the industry is set to achieve 23 percent of the 1.1 million jobs it needs to create and 20 percent of the $29.5 billion it needs to generate by 2028. “The growth of the IT-BPM sector in 2023 is not just a statistic; it is a testament to the industry’s resilience, the dedication of its ecosystem of partners, and the continuing competitiveness of Filipino talent,” Madrid shared. “The Philippines is not just keeping pace with global trends; we are setting the standard. As we move forward, let us continue to invest in talent, innovation, and inclusive growth, ensuring we remain a beacon of excellence in the global IT-BPM industry. Together, we will reach new heights, fulfill our 2028 targets, and secure a brighter future for our nation and our people,” he underlined. Five dead after freight train slams into SUV
Five people were killed Saturday night after a freight train crashed into an SUV at a rail crossing in Florida, United States, police said. The SUV driver approached the Plant City crossing, which is controlled only by signage, and drove on without looking both ways, Sheriff Chad Chronister told a news conference, citing video footage and witness testimony. “The conductor of the train did everything he could to try to slow this train down,” and used horns and lights to warn the driver, he said. The car catapulted and flipped several times before landing a distance from the crossing, Chronister said. Five of the seven passengers, some of whom were children, were ejected from the car and died. Rescuers used the jaws of life to extract the driver and front passenger, who are in critical condition in hospital, Chronister said. The train was traveling at about 88 kilometers per hour upon impact, Chronister wrote earlier on social media. The sheriff said police were still working to identify the victims but that he believed they were a family on their way to a nearby quinceanera party — a Latin American celebration of a girl’s 15th birthday. NAIA rises in rankings of world’s most internationally connected airports
The Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) has established itself as one of the most internationally connected airports in the world. Known by its International Air Transport Association (IATA) code, MNL, it ranked 15th in the top 50 global airport mega hubs and secured the third spot in the top 25 low-cost carrier airport mega hubs. According to the 2023 Megahubs Index by OAG, a leading provider of digital flight information, intelligence, and analytics for airports, MNL has climbed from 29th place in 2019 to 15th place this year in terms of international connectivity. The flag carrier, Philippine Airlines, emerged as the dominant air carrier with a 32% share of flights. In this list, led by the United Kingdom's London Heathrow Airport, MNL also ranks 6th among the top international mega hubs in the Asia Pacific region, following KUL (Malaysia), HND (Japan), ICN (Republic of Korea), BKK (Thailand), and SIN (Singapore). OAG noted, “The presence of seven Asian airport hubs in the Global Top 20 is significant considering the region is still on the path towards a full recovery.” Currently, MNL hosts 40 international carriers serving 58 international destinations. The latest addition to NAIA’s roster in 2023 is ZIPAIR, which launched its first flight between Manila and Narita last July. Additionally, Philippine Airlines has introduced nonstop flights to Perth, and Air China now directly connects Tianfu Chengdu to NAIA. Among the top 25 mega hubs for low-cost international connections this year, MNL stands out in third place, trailing only KUL (Malaysia) and ICN (Republic of Korea). MNL is the home of Cebu Pacific Air, the Philippines’ leading low-cost carrier (LCC), which will be launching flights to Da Nang, a new destination from Manila, beginning December 7th. Thirteen Asia Pacific airports, including MNL, dominate the rankings, reflecting the high level of LCC penetration in South Asia and Southeast Asia. “We are pleased that MNL is able to ride the momentum brought about by the strong and consistent travel rebound from the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the LCC penetration in our region. We are likewise grateful for the confidence the international carriers have extended to us. Testament to this is the growing number of applications from various international carriers who wish to operate flights in NAIA,” Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) Officer-in-Charge Bryan Co said. “NAIA being the country’s main gateway makes it incumbent upon us, as the airport authority, to expand the destinations Filipinos, as well as our guests, can fly to and from MNL,” added Co. HK Express is set to launch its inaugural flight between Manila and Hong Kong on 13 October, while United Airlines is scheduled to launch nonstop flights connecting Manila with San Francisco starting 30 October. Debunking Misconceptions: Sustainable living doesn’t have to be expensive
A sustainable lifestyle is often associated with exclusivity, as many say it comes with great expense. Yet Pacita “Chit” Juan, founder of the Echostore, a social enterprise and retail store carrying green, fair trade products, begs to differ. The Echostore was first conceptualized back in 2008, a time when sustainable living was not as widely known and given great importance as much as it is now, making Chit Juan, along with two other women who also founded the enterprise, pioneers to the green living trending the country — a fact she claims to be her biggest achievement in all 15 years of the Echostore. “Kailangan may mag-umpisa eh (There has to be someone who starts),” Chit says. Adopting a sustainable lifestyle requires choice and dedication as it does not happen overnight, much as Chit and her co-founders’ decision to launch their business at a time when consumers were still somewhat unfamiliar with the idea of sustainable living. It took them many years before the Echostore really took off, according to Chit. She even recalls how many detractors they had during the first few years of the enterprise, saying the Echostore would shut down immediately. Yet, she proudly declares that she is pleased that they were still successful in launching the business despite negativity. In fact, this month of September marks its 15th year. [caption id="attachment_186641" align="aligncenter" width="458"] Photograph courtesy of ECHOSTORE CULINARY Virgin Coconut Oil.[/caption] She really believed that when something is dedicated to a purpose, it will succeed. “‘Pag mission-driven kasi, it will always succeed (When something is mission driven, it will always succeed),” she says. Even the pandemic did not put the store into a halt. Chit in fact says that it paved a way to further boost their online sales. “Priorities lang talaga (It’s all a matter of priorities),” Chits ays. She argues that the notion of sustainable living being expensive is merely relative and a matter of whether the person is fully ready to shift and commit to that lifestyle.“Bakit ‘pag bumili ka ng large drink sa Starbucks, hindi mahal? (How come a large Starbucks drink doesn’t seem so expensive to you?)” she quips. However, Chit does not deny the fact that sustainable products are indeed significantly more expensive than ordinary ones, as she says that a big contributing element to this is the fact that sustainable products have not yet achieved a significant market scale. Yet, she contends that sustainable living does not necessarily have to be absolute. “You don’t have to be vegetarian all the way. Gusto mo Monday ka lang meatless, o kaya Friday (You don’t have to be vegetarian all the way. If you want, you can just skip meat on Mondays and Fridays).”Those two days spent not eating meat is already a big step in integrating a sustainable lifestyle. So is using a water bottle or a metal straw, adds Chit. “Baby steps,” she says. “Baby steps, and before you know it, it becomes part of your lifestyle.” It is all about knowing your options in the things you do every day, according to Chit. Whether it is what you eat for breakfast or how you get to work every day. Being a responsible consumer is, after all, what sustainable living is truly about, adds Chit. This is why she expresses her joy that the Echostore was able to be exposed to the Gen Z‘s, as she says they are the ones especially mindful of the environment and the importance of sustainable living. “I have great faith in Gen Z, kasi pinanganak sila sa challenges ng climatechange. It’s your generation now who will bring this to the mainstream (I have great faith in Gen Z because they were born into the challenges of climate change. It’s your generation now who will bring this to mainstream),” Chit says. Solicitation scam for beauty pageant bared
Muntinlupa Rep. Jaime Fresnedi and Mayor Ruffy Biazon have warned of a solicitation scam using a fake endorsement letter for a beauty pageant. Fresnedi, in a Facebook post, said a fake endorsement letter indicating that it came from his office was being used to solicit from business establishments for the “Miss Amazing Philippines” beauty pageant in exchange for a five percent discount when they renew their business permits. The fake endorsement letter certified that a certain Rovic Macariola from Barangay Putatan appeared on 15 September in Fresnedi’s office “with the purpose of seeking permission for the introduction and fulfillment of the candidate requirements for the competition of ‘Miss Amazing Philippines 2023’ pageant.” In a statement, Fresnedi said “The public is hereby warned that Rovic P. Macariola did not appear on the 15th day of September 2023 and sought permission from this Office relative to the requirements for the competition of ‘Miss Amazing Philippines’ 2023 pageant.” The solon added, “Further, Atty. Miguelito Rueda-Gozos who allegedly approved the Certificate of Appearance as a lawyer holding position as a mere Administrative Aide II is not connected with the Office of the House of Representatives of the Lone District of Muntinlupa.” The letterhead used in the fake endorsement letter “pertains to the City Government of Muntinlupa and not to the Lone District and the signature of the undersigned in the Certificate of Appearance was forged.” Fresnedi said, “the public is hereby advised that the Office of Representative Jaime R. Fresnedi did not issue the Certificate of Appearance and that they should not transact with Rovic P. Macariola who made the foregoing false representations in order to solicit donations for the alleged beauty pageant.” Mayor Biazon said the matter is a scam and the city government does not ask money or donation in exchange for a discount. The people of Muntinlupa were strongly urged by Fresnedi to send information and reports of Macariola’s activities to the police for the filing of a complaint against him. Held at the Quezon Hall 1 of Seda Vertis in Diliman, Quezon City, the event encouraged students of Interior Design and Architecture to use their talents in transforming future environments and creating a significant impact in the succeeding generations through practical design solutions that help address pressing issues of our time. Now on its 15th year, this year’s AYDA Awards carries the theme “Converge: Championing Purposeful Design,” which is a fitting reflection of Nippon Paint’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of creative excellence. This year’s theme is about finding your core and what you truly believe in before manifesting it into your design. It focuses on a designer’s journey in searching for a cause worth fighting for. What we believe, and invest in, may change over a period of time. The use of the word “converge,” on the other hand, refers to that situation when a point or a line meets — leading to a common result. “The AYDA Awards would like to help shape a future where designers from different backgrounds, cultures and regions can learn from each other and deliver the best possible solution to common and underlying social challenges,” explained Giselle Campos, sales and marketing manager of Nippon Paint (Coatings) Philippines Inc. “Today, as designers face the challenge of providing a balance between sustainability and urbanization, and at a time when digitalization has already taken over interpersonal bonding, we believe that going local should also be considered fit for global appreciation,” she added. Aside from formally jumpstarting this year’s awards program, and explaining the contest mechanics, the launch was also used to introduce some of the biggest names in the industry who have agreed to serve as judges for the awards program. Leading the panel of adjudicators this year are Ar. Eduardo Casares (architecture category head judge), the brains behind the structure of the Tutuban Center in Divisoria, and IDr. Wilmer Lopez (interior design category head judge), president and creative director of Space Encounters, an interior design firm that specializes in interior branding and mid-century modern furniture.
