CEB makes headway in its EV program
Cebu Pacific announced on Friday afternoon that the airline will start a demonstration run for an electric baggage tractor and charging station this quarter as part of its ongoing electric vehicle transition program. According to CEB, baggage tractors are essential equipment used by airlines to haul carts and dollies during ramp operations. One of the largest fleets of ground support equipment (GSE) in the airline industry, CEB operates more than 100 luggage tractors. The Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila will serve as the operating and testing location for the all-electric, zero-emission tractor used for CEB's ground operations. This year, it is intended to import numerous electric baggage tractors for use at NAIA. CEB Chief Operations Officer Javier Massot said that their objectives for this demo run are multi-pronged. Since electric vehicles are a relatively new area for CEB, they want to test the technology and its operational viability and safety. They also intend to test the demo unit for various scenarios in their ground operations, so they are deploying it for both airport operations and cargo operations over the demo period. Massot added that the electric baggage tractor and charging station demo units are provided by TLD Asia Limited (TLD) — a subsidiary of Alvest, a group that designs, manufactures, and distributes technical products for the aviation industry. It uses lithium-ion batteries which have a significantly longer life compared to previous-generation lead-acid batteries. The charging station unit is a fast charger that is also provided by TLD. CEB is expecting one more electric baggage tractor demo unit to arrive from another GSE original equipment manufacturer (OEM), which is also targeted for deployment in the last week of August this year. The learning and experience from the demo runs will be essential components of CEB's long-term plan to replace its ground transport network with electric, zero-emission alternatives. The airline is dedicated to managing and minimizing the environmental effect of its activities, and the EV project is an important component of that commitment. CEB Chief Strategy Officer Alex Reyes said that CEB’s Scope 1 emissions come from their flights and ground operations. Although emissions from their GSEs, as part of their ground operations, are only a small portion of their total Scope 1, their decarbonization strategy addresses the entire emissions from their value chain. This is necessary as they align with net-zero emission reduction goals by 2050. Reyes said that earlier this year, CEB rolled out its EV service for employees with the deployment of 100 percent electric COMET vehicles from GET Philippines Inc. For its flying operations, CEB continues to receive new Airbus deliveries of fuel-efficient aircraft, with 10 brand-new aircraft expected for 2023 and five additional aircraft via long-term leasing. Blockchain focuses on creative sector
South Korea’s Comet Global and Japan’s Junca Holdings will be collaborating with the Philippine government and private businesses to help draft regulations on blockchain and breed more Filipino startups in a range of industries, from finance to the arts. These initiatives will be part of the memorandum of understanding among the two foreign firms and the multisectoral Blockchain Council of the Philippines. The agreement will be signed during the Philippine Blockchain Week or PBW 2023 to be held from 18 to 21 September at the Marriott Hotel Manila. Emmy Lou Delfin, director at the Department of Information and Communications Technology said blockchain, an online database or records system, can make government and business transactions transparent and inclusive. The reason is that the blockchain can be viewed by all its users and once a piece of information has been entered into the blockchain, it can no longer be modified. “With its inherent qualities of decentralization and transparency, blockchain has the potential to enhance trust, promote accountability and transform traditional systems. But let me emphasize that with great potential comes great responsibility, so must make sure that blockchain technology remains ethical and inclusive,” Delfin said Tuesday at the press conference on PBW 2023, the second of its kind organized by the blockchain council. Blockchain risks, benefits Donald Lim, lead convenor of PBW, said the foreign firms will help Filipinos see both the benefits and dangers of using blockchain in certain ways. “Blockchain is already in the mature stages in South Korea and Japan. The Philippines is a greenfield for them, that’s why they’ll be bringing in a lot of their expertise and technologies. They’ll help us understand what has been tried and tested.” Blockchain has been mostly used in finance and cryptocurrencies or digital money, but can be adopted by other sectors to also record transactions in health, agriculture, energy and creative activities. For entrepreneurial individuals, Lim said the PBW 2023 will also feature hackathons where they can pitch blockchain-based solutions for various social issues to the foreign guests and businesspeople who will attend the event. Lim said he expects at least 10,000 participants in the PBW this year “South Korea and Japan governments are even stricter about blockchain, but their economies are big. They have more money and suppliers to scale up the use of blockchain faster. In the Philippines, we have less money and banks invest only small portions of their funds in blockchain technologies.” Lim said investors would likely be flocking to Bataan as the Authority of the Freeport Area of Bataan announced plans to open certain areas in the province for firms using blockchain and other emerging technologies. “If there’s a Silicon Valley in the US, Bataan might become a blockchain valley.” Jo-Dann Darong, director at Department of Trade and Industry or DTI, said the PBW this year will also allow the government to explore uses of blockchain for the creative industry, consisting of audio-visual arts, performing arts, poetry and painting, among others. “Gone are the days when DTI was known for sari-sari stores and price monitoring. We have recognized the convergence of technology and creativity in the national development agenda of the country, making it competitive.” Darong shared that there are over 6 million Filipinos working in nine major sectors and 73 subsectors in the creative industry, which now represents over 7 percent share of the country’s gross domestic product. World-renowned fashion designer Michael Cinco will also conduct a fashion show through metaverse which uses digital art and virtual-reality technology. Other activities lined up for PBW this year include a discussion on artificial intelligence, NFTY Awards for digital artworks, gaming exposition by Tier 1, and Blockchain 101 for students to learn the basics of this technology. June Bootid meteor shower to brighten Phl skies
The Philippines will witness another astronomical wonder, the June Bootid meteor shower, over the country’s skies this month. In its astronomical diary, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said the June Bootids will be active beginning 22 June until 2 July, with its peak activity taking place around 7 p.m. on 27 June. PAGASA said the parent body responsible for this meteor shower is the comet 7P/Pons-Winnecke. The June Bootids will be at their best displays around 9 p.m. — when the radiant point is highest in the sky. The first quarter Moon in Virgo presents significant interference with the meteor shower observation. PAGASA said that meteor showers can be observable through naked eye hence, no special equipment such as telescopes or binoculars will be needed for this phenomenon. It also advised observers to choose a dark observation site — preferably away from city lights and under clear and moonless sky conditions “to maximize the viewing experience” of the astronomical wonder. Meanwhile, the Moon and Venus will be in conjunction, with the Moon passing 3°41’ to the north of Venus around 8:48 p.m. on 22 June. At the same time, they will make a close approach, passing within 3°31’ of each other. The post June Bootid meteor shower to brighten Phl skies appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Perseids meteor shower dazzles PH sky this month
Filipinos will once again be awed by one of the year’s most dazzling meteor showers this month. If weather permits, the Perseids meteor shower will be visible throughout most of the month and becomes extra visible during its peak from Aug. 12 to Aug. 13, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA). It said at least 50 meteors per hour will be observed during its peak time. Unfortunately, the waxing gibbous moon may interfere the observations of fainter meteors, PAGASA said. Perseids meteor shower radiate out from the constellation Perseus, which is located in the eastern horizon. The meteor shower arises out of the debris of comet Swift-Tuttle, which last made a pass by Earth in 1992. PAGASA said meteors are easiest to observe if there is no moonlight and light pollution and clear sky condition exists. August remains as one of the most popular time of the year to observe meteor showers due to high hourly rate and bright meteors, PAGASA added......»»
