WATCH: Ilocos Norte fresh grad’s amazing room renovation

Sonder Evennys Agustin talks about his room’s Japanese-inspired extreme makeover and the importance of bringing art into our lives Spending his days and nights indoors due to the health crisis is not the experience 22-year-old Sonder Evennys Agustin thought he was going to have after graduating from civil engineering. As the days went on and he tried to find things to fill up his days, he realized he had been staring at a blank canvas this whole time. Over a month, within the four walls that had become his world, Sonder transformed his room into a tranquil Japanese-inspired space. “The main reason [I transformed my room] is gusto kong maging productive ngayong lockdown (The main reason I transformed my room is that I wanted to be productive during the lockdown),” says the Ilocos Norte native in an interview with Manila Bulletin Lifestyle. “Kaya po naisipan ko pong gumawa nga mga furniture and then naisipan ko na din pong irenovate ang room ko (I thought of making furniture and renovating my room).” A WAVE OF INSPIRATION Sonder imitates The Great Wave off Kanagawa in the face of his walls Big in Japan On YouTube, Sonder shares the process in creating his Japanese style furniture, including a chic kohiteburu, or coffee table, as well as a floating table. The eye-catching masterpiece of the room, however, is his mural recreating The Great Wave off Kanagawa created by Katsushika Hokusai in the late Edo period of Japan. It truly ties the whole room together and elevates it to a whole other level. Hokusai’s woodblock print, created almost two centuries ago, is one of the most recognizable and influential art pieces in the world. Original prints are on display top museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the British Museum in London. Artist in residence Of course, any plans to travel to those museum-filled cities to see the original are grounded as of the moment. But Sonder’s beautiful recreation shows that we don’t need to travel to experience and appreciate art in our daily lives. “As a local artist, important po para sa aking na to bring art into a room,” Sonder adds. “Kasi, isa ito sa mga nagbibigay buhay sa isang lugar. Kumbaga po is sila nagbibigay lasa sa isang pagkain (Because it is a live-giving space. It is like giving flavor to food).” “And dahil love ko po ang art, dapat lang na ilagay ko po sa kwarto ko po para ipaalala sa akin na ang Diyos ay may binigay sa akin na talent na dapat ko lang pong ipagmalaki (And because I love art, I just have to put it in my room to remind me that God has given me a talent that I should be proud of).” THE GREAT ROOM Sonder’s renovated bedroom Sonder says that his artistic talents and sensibilities come from both sides of the family. As a child, he competed in various drawing and painting competitions. He even placed first in the Department of Education’s (DepEd) National Festival of Talents (NFOT) in 2014 when it was hosted in Olongapo City. While his extreme makeover room edition took 30 days to put together, Sonder wants to make it clear that it took a while to save up for the big renovation. Even while studying, he accepted commissions for paintings, drawings, and murals. But it was all worth it. “Kung gusto mo talagang maka-achieve ng kahit ano, huwag kang mawalan ng determinasyon na matapos ang goal mo (If there is something you want to achieve, do not lose your determination to finish your goals),” Sonder adds. “Wala pong mahirap sa taong may determinasyon sa buhay. Maging positibo lang sa buhay. Yung mga negatibo dapat naiwaksi (There is nothing difficult for a person with determination in their life. Just stay positive in life and disregard the negatives).” .....»»

UAAP Season 82: Rondina’s influence visible in current crop of Tigresses

Sisi Rondina’s dedication to step up and be a leader obviously rubbed off on her former University of Sto. Tomas teammates. The holdovers from last year’s runner-up squad especially sophomore Eya Laure are emulating the same passion and heart that the reigning Most Valuable Player displayed throughout her career and in the Tigresses’ campaign in the UAAP Season 82 women’s volleyball tournament.       UST plunged into an early test of character after losing its opening game via upset at the hands of National University. But the Tigresses were quick to lick their wounds as they bounced back mightily with a straight sets demolition of Far Eastern University on Sunday.   Laure, the Season 81 Rookie of the Year, stepped up for the Espana-based squad and played the leader’s role in rallying UST to a rousing victory.  “Siguro, tanggap ko naman siya [na pagiging leader] kasi si Ate Sisi pa lang, kung paano ako minold last year na di pwede na siya lang,” said Laure, who backed Rondina last season in carrying UST back to the Finals after eight years.  “Kailangan mahatak niya kami - at nahatak niya nga kami - at nadamay niya kami sa pagiging leader niya,” added the national team member. “Parang lahat gusto na maging leader na isang malaking bagay sa isang team.” Eya Laure also credited UST seniors like returning players Tin Francisco and EJ Laure, setter Alina Bicar and Caitlyn Viray for doing their part for the team.  “Ngayon, makikita mo eh, yung mga seniors ko pa rin eh.  Kumbaga ‘sige ate, tutulungan ko rin kayo hangga’t kayo kong i-lead to. Nandito lang ako,’” said Laure. Rondina, who is currently on an indoor volleyball hiatus to concentrate on beach volleyball, is proud of the current Tigresses performance so far. “Para sa mga babies ko na naglalaro sa UAAP ngayon, I’m pretty sure naman na lalaban at lalaban sila,” said Rondina, who was feted as Miss Volleyball during the Philippine Sportswriters Association Annual Awards recently. “Kahit wala na ‘yung mga seniors nila alam ko na pare-pareho lang kami ng nilalaruan and alam ko na mas aktibo sila ngayon and mas palaban sila. Kasi mas madami silang nakuhang experience eh.” Rondina knows that UST’s journey, just like last year, won’t be an easy one, but the former Queen Tigress has strong faith that the squad can hurdle any obstacle if they put their hearts into one common goal.      “Siyempre yung sabi ko sa kanila na mahalin nila ang UST the way I love UST and syempre yung pagiging palaban,” she said. “Sabi nga ni Eya, kapag nasusugatan ang tigre lalaban at lalaban sa huli. So sana madala hanggang matapos yung season.”     Show your school spirit. "Preparado kaming lahat."  Libranza, a native of Agusan del Sur, is on an impressive seven-fight winning streak, with his last loss coming back in 2017, a KO loss to South African Moruti Mthalane for the IBO Flyweight World Championship.  He's coming off a unanimous decision win in Carson back in February.  Also on the card will be Davaeño welterweight Jayar "Hitman" Inson (18-2, 12 KO), who meets veteran Mahonri Montes (35-9-1, 24 KO).  Inson, a former WBO Asia Pacific Welterweight Champion, is coming off a split decision loss to Jonathan Steele in the undercard of the Pacquiao-Adrien Broner bout in Las Vegas back in January.  "Masaya kasi kahit na talo ako [last time], binigyan naman ako ng pagkakataon na lumaban ulit," said Inson.  Undefeated Filipino-American John Leo "The Lion" Dato (11-0-1, 7 KO) is also expected to be on the card.  Apart from the Pinoys joining Pacquiao in Vegas on July 20th, a couple of Pinoy former champs are also in camp as they get ready for their own upcoming contests.  Former three-divison world champion Johnriel "Quadro Alas" Casimero is back on track and is preparing for a bout in Manila this August, while former WBA Interim Featherweight World Champion Jhack "El Kapitan" Tepora, who is coming off a win back in June, is also keeping busy with Team Pacquiao.  "Masaya kami dito na nag-tetraining, kasi maraming Pilipino and isang team kami," said Casimero. "Hindi boring yung pagsisikap namin kasi andiyan kaming lahat. Masaya kami sa training kahit mahirap, kaya sinisikap natin."  Casimero has won his last three bouts, and will be challenging for the WBO Interim Bantamweight World Championship against Cesar Ramirez.  H/T: Steve Angeles, ABS-CBN    Don't miss the action!

Alyssa Valdez drew nothing but praise and admiration from director Pertee Brinas and accomplished actors TJ Trinidad and Glaiza De Castro in her film debut as an actress in the movie My Letters to Happy.   Stepping out of her comfort zone, Valdez gave justice to the character she played according to Brinas. Valdez plays the role of Cindy, a trusted assistant and trainee of Trinidad’s character Albert, an all work and no play businessman, who will meet the character of De Castro’s Happy in a story of finding happiness and battling mental illness.  “Well, ‘yung character kasi niya hindi siya ni-require mag-ala TJ or ala-Glaiza. Kasi this film really required a lot from these two, kahit sina TJ at Glaiza na sila, maraming demands sa kanila ‘yung film na ito,” said Brinas, who wrote the character of Cindy with Valdez in mind to play the role. “‘Yung kay Alyssa naman it was just right so ang grade ko sa kanya, she did it perfectly kasi hindi ko [pwedeng sabihin] maso-spoil eh. ‘Yung hiningi ng character sa kanya kaya niyang ibigay,” he said. “Nakita niyo naman sa trailer, Alyssa pa ba ang nakita niyo doon? So on a scale of 1-10, it was a 10. Or 9.5 sige para may room for improvement.” De Castro, who plays a positive and exuberant person filled with boundless love for life but would eventually plunge to depression, said that she saw great potential in Valdez.  “Di kasi kami magka-eksena pero sa workshop nakitaan ko naman siya ng potensyal. Oh di ba pa-judge?” she said. "Hindi, pero kasi ang sarap din tingnan ng isang tao na raw. Na hindi pa siya filtered sa kahit na anong acting methods or techniques di ba? So natural talaga siyang lalabas.” De Castro was also generous in her admiration of the volleyball star's professionalism. Valdez juggled filming the movie and playing for the Cool Smashers in the ongoing Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Reinforced Conference. “Ang hirap mag-judge pero ‘yung fact lang na nagpunta siya from the very start at humabol sa kanyang training para um-attend ng workshop namin 10 na ‘yun eh, ‘di ba? Kasi kumbaga kung raket lang ‘to or parang gusto niya lang ma-experience ito, hindi na niya seseryosohin,” said De Castro. “But alam ko busy rin siya na tao and syempre priority niya ‘yung profession niya but still she took time to meet us and to work with the other actors.” For Trinidad, who was with Valdez in most of her scenes, the volleyball star was quick to adapt to a new environment and did her job well.   “I can’t judge or I can’t rate. On a scale of 1-10, ‘yung pag-rate ko is I guess the first thing I told her na parang ‘wag pairalin ang hiya kasi syempre first time niya eh, she had to come out of her shell pa. So after the first day, she’s getting comfortable na,” he said. “So at the end of the day hindi naman igu-go ni direk ‘yan kapag hindi siya satisfied sa scene.” My Letters to Happy opens in cinemas nationwide on July 17......»»

“There’s no room for growth anymore in the team.” This was how now ex-team captain Michele Gumabao summed up her decision to leave Pocari Sweat after two seasons. Gumabao, who led the Lady Warriors to back-to-back titles in the V-League last year, opened up Wednesday, just a few hours after she posted on her Instagram account that she’s officially parting ways with the club.     “It's final na talaga I will leave Pocari and join another team. Nagtapos ang contract ko January 7,” said the former De La Salle stalwart in an interview at the Adamson gym after the Lady Falcons' practice where she serves as an assistant coach. The two-time V-League Best Opposite Hitter and Reinforced Conference Finals Most Valuable Player also confirmed that she is now accepting offers from teams in the Philippine Superliga. “I'm looking for a new team, I'm entertaining new offers, I mean something that I denied myself for one year,” she added.   strong>Falling out /strong> Gumabao revealed that she and Pocari Sweat’s management are no longer seeing eye-to-eye, the main reason of her bolting out of the team she served for two years starting in 2015 when the team, then known as Philips Gold Lady Slammers, competed and won a couple of bronze medals in the PSL.         “I've been with Pocari and Philips Gold so ngayon lang talaga nagsi-sink in sa akin na aalis na ako and iba na ang magiging teammates ko sad talaga pero kailangan ko,' she said. The three-time UAAP champion continued that there are issues with her and team manager Eric Ty that they just couldn’t resolve, including compensation of players and expenses in running the team. She added that she even tried to call the attention of the management itself to air the grievances of the team being the skipper, but it all fell on deaf ears, according to Gumabao.    “Ako kasi as a player and as a person, kapag may mali lagi akong gumagawa ng solusyon. As a player ayaw kong mali ang ginagawa ko and as a coach ayaw kong mali ang ginagawa ng player ko and as a team captain ayaw kong mali ang sistema namin sa team,” Gumabao narrated. “So nagkaproblema ako with our team manager and we talked it out and hindi namin na solusyunan.' “Umakyat ako sa mga boss akala ko nasolusyunan and in the end their promises meant nothing for me so I had to leave,” she added. “Ayaw ko ng issue, ayaw ko na ako ang sinisiraan, ayaw kong ako ang masama. When I joined Philips Gold two years ago all I wanted was a happy team, you make the team happy, we make the team win and we did. We made back-to-back championships. Ang sabi ko naman, ang goal namin as a team since I entered, we achieved it together. Naging strong kami, naging maganda ang bond namin and there came to a point na lahat ng problema na minsan kahit gaano ka pa kalakas, kahit gaanon mo pa kagusto magpaka-martir hindi mo na talaga kakayanin and 'yun ang nangyari sa akin just recently.” “Hindi ko na kaya ang issues sa loob ng team with our manager hindi ko na talaga kaya intindihin paulit-ulit ang mali. I tried, I spoke up, I tried correcting, I tried working with them for one more year pero wala talaga eh and I just hope that change will come for the team ngayon na umalis ako,” she continued. “I took a stand for myself, ayaw ko na may naaaping player sa team ko by management because the management's only job is to give the team good conditions, to support the team financially and emotionally which is very important.” With unresolved issues, Gumabao felt that she can’t work with team anymore.  “'Yun lang, nawala na ang relationship ko with management so I cannot play for anybody that I'm not proud of or na hindi ko mahal na hindi ko nirerespeto or ganoon ang treatment sa akin,” she said. “So I voiced out every opinion that I could. Oo, gumawa ako ng gulo between management and me pero wala eh, they chose to keep him and they pushed me away. I'd be happy to leave, never ko namang pagsisiksikan ang sarili ko sa isang team na ayaw na sa akin.” Gumabao clarified that she holds no jealousy on teammate Myla Pablo’s multi-million 5-year contract including a brand new car as part of her signing bonus . “I’m happy for Myla I know she worked hard for whatever she signed on. I love her as a friend, as a teammate and as a sister. So hindi ako magseselos kung ibinigay sa kanya ‘yun,” explained Gumabao.          strong>Pocari Sweat to air its side /strong> With Gumabao making it public about the issues, ABS-CBN Sports tried to get the side of Pocari Sweat but the club declined to comment and will release an official statement. “We will release an official statement. Pinag-uusapan pa namin (ng management),” in a message sent by Ty.           --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles .....»»
