G77 summit seeks ‘new economic world order’
Leaders of 134 countries huddled in Havana, Cuba on Friday for their G77+China summit, looking to set up a new economic world order. The meeting should conclude Saturday with a statement underscoring “the right to development in an increasingly exclusive, unfair, unjust and plundering international order,” the foreign minister of the host country, Bruno Rodriguez, told reporters on Wednesday. United Nations chief Antonio Guterres, who is attending the summit that concludes Saturday, raised concern over the multiplicity of summits ahead of the Friday meeting. “Multipolarity could be a factor for escalating geostrategic tensions, with tragic consequences,” he warned. Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said on X, formerly Twitter, that the summit participants would “reaffirm our commitment to multilateralism, cooperation and development.” WITH AFP The post G77 summit seeks ‘new economic world order’ appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
APT cyber attacks rising
Global cybersecurity leader Fortinet has released its 2023 Global Threat Landscape Report, revealing that while ransomware attacks have declined, advanced persistent threat, or APT, groups have increased their activities. The report found that the number of ransomware attacks fell to 13 percent in the first half of 2023, from 22 percent in the same period five years ago. However, the report also found that the attacks that did occur were more sophisticated and targeted. “Ransomware attackers are becoming more selective about their targets,” said John Maddison, Fortinet’s chief security officer. “They are going after organizations that they believe are more likely to pay the ransom.” The report also found that APT groups were active in the first half of 2023. APT groups are often state-sponsored and are known for launching targeted attacks against government agencies, businesses and other organizations. “APT groups are constantly evolving their tactics, techniques, and procedures,” said Maddison. “This makes it difficult for organizations to defend themselves.” The report also found that botnets have become more persistent. Botnets are networks of infected computers that are controlled by a single attacker. They can be used to launch a variety of attacks, including distributed denial-of-service or DDoS attacks and spam campaigns. “Botnets are a major threat to organizations,” Maddison said. “They can be used to disrupt businesses and steal sensitive data.” The report also found that the number of unique exploits has increased. An exploit is a piece of code that takes advantage of a vulnerability in software. When an exploit is used, it can allow an attacker to gain control of a computer system. “The increase in the number of unique exploits is a worrying trend,” Maddison said. “It means that organizations need to be constantly vigilant about patching their software.” The report concludes by calling for a “whole-of-society” approach to combating cybercrime. This means that governments, businesses, and individuals all need to work together to protect themselves from attack. “Cybercrime is a global problem,” said Maddison. “It requires a global solution.” The report also recommended that organizations adopt a number of security measures, including: Patching software vulnerabilities promptly. Using strong passwords and multi-factor authentication. Educating employees about cyber threats. Implementing a layered security approach. The report also recommended that organizations use a security solution that can provide visibility into their entire attack surface and help them identify and respond to threats quickly. Dutch brewer Heineken announces complete withdrawal from Russia
Dutch brewer Heineken on Friday announced it was pulling out of Russia after selling its operations to the Arnest Group, the largest Russian manufacturer of cosmetics, household goods and metal packaging. Like other major Western companies, Heineken pledged last year to quit Russia, but drew criticism earlier this year after a Dutch investigative website reported that it was continuing its Russian sales. The company apologized in March for creating "ambiguity" on its vow to leave the country, saying it was hoping to secure jobs for its Russian employees but struggling to find a buyer for its Russian business. The brewer said in a statement Friday that the sale had received all the necessary approvals and "concludes the process Heineken initiated in March 2022 to exit Russia". The move will incur an expected total cumulative loss of 300 million euros ($320 million), it added. "We have now completed our exit from Russia," Heineken chief executive officer Dolf van den Brink said. "Recent developments demonstrate the significant challenges faced by large manufacturing companies in exiting Russia," he added. "While it took much longer than we had hoped, this transaction secures the livelihoods of our employees and allows us to exit the country in a responsible manner." UK court concludes teenager behind huge hacking campaign
A UK court on Wednesday found a teenager responsible for a hacking campaign that included one of the biggest breaches in the history of the video game industry. Arion Kurtaj, 18, was described by the prosecution as one of the "key players" in the Lapsus$ group that hacked Rockstar Games in 2022 and published footage from its still unreleased "Grand Theft Auto 6". Following a two-month case at London's Southwark Crown Court, a jury unanimously concluded that Kurtaj, whom psychiatrists deemed unfit to stand trial, had carried out 12 offenses. They included carrying out an unauthorized act to impair the operation of a computer, blackmail, and fraud. Kurtaj also threatened Rockstar Games he would leak the hacked source code for its latest Grand Theft Auto releases onto internet forums. Grand Theft Auto 5, the last iteration of the game that revolves around heists and street violence, was released in 2013 and has since sold 170 million copies and generated some $7 billion in revenue. Kurtaj and a 17-year-old youth, whose name cannot be published because of his age, were also accused of hacking software company Nvidia in February 2022 and threatening to release its intellectual property. The 17-year-old was on Wednesday found guilty of fraud and blackmail. Prosecutors said the pair hacked the servers of broadband provider BT and mobile operator EE before demanding a $ 4 million (3.7-million-euro) ransom. Sentencing dates have yet to be fixed for either defendant. The post UK court concludes teenager behind huge hacking campaign appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

DBP unloads P1-B LGUs debt support
State-owned Development Bank of the Philippines or DBP has completed the disbursement of funds under the P1-billion interest rate subsidy program covering local government units or LGUs in the implementation of response and recovery interventions during the pandemic, a top official said. DBP president and chief executive officer Michael de Jesus said a total of 264 LGUs, of which, 69 percent belong to the 2nd to 6th income class, benefited from DBP ASENSO-Bayanihan Interest Subsidy Fund or ISF program, which was part of the menu of financial assistance of the national government under Republic Act 11494 or the “Bayanihan to Heal as One Act.” “DBP is honored to be a responsive partner of our LGUs as they continue to build back more from the ill effects of the pandemic,” De Jesus said. “The bank remains steadfast in our commitment to advance the programs of the national government that seeks to strengthen and fortify the resiliency of our LGUs against future challenges,” according to the official. Support to 4 sectors DBP is the eighth largest lender in the country in terms of assets and provides credit support to four strategic sectors which are infrastructure and logistics; micro, small and medium enterprises; environment; social services and community development. RA 11494 mandates government financial institutions to provide subsidies to LGUs for new and existing loans availed for the implementation of their respective Covid-19 response and recovery interventions such as permanent working capital and acquisition of agricultural equipment and construction. De Jesus said that through the DBP ASENSO-Bayanihan ISF program, LGUs were able to conserve financial resources for interest payments, which were channeled to other essential developmental projects that helped create opportunities amidst the slowdown in the national economy. He said most of the projects supported by the program covered infrastructure development such as the construction of roads and bridges, multipurpose buildings, acquisition of heavy equipment units, and Covid-related infrastructure. “As the disbursement phase of the ISF concludes, DBP remains determined to sustain its support for the nation’s economic recovery efforts and explore avenues that will contribute to our country’s overall progress,” De Jesus said. United States women’s star Rapinoe to retire at end of season
United States women's team star Megan Rapinoe announced on social media on Saturday that she would be retiring from football at the end of this season. "It is with a deep sense of peace & gratitude that I have decided this will be my final season playing this beautiful game," the 38-year-old posted. "I never could have imagined the ways in which soccer would shape and change my life forever," she added. The two-time World Cup winner, well known for her activism, is part of the USA squad for the upcoming women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Rapinoe plays in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) for Seattle based OL Reign -- their season concludes in November. The winger currently has 199 caps over a span of 17 years playing for her country and also won an Olympic gold medal in London in 2012. She was awarded the Best FIFA Women's Player in 2019 but her fame came as much for her espousal of causes and her campaigning as for her skills on the field. Rapinoe publicly came out as gay in July 2012 and has been a high-profile campaigner on social issues including LGBTQ+ rights, racial inequality and gender and pay equality. She was a leading voice in the US women's team's successful fight for equal pay and conditions which resulted in a law suit and eventual new collective agreement being struck in 2021. Rapinoe made headlines in 2016 when she took a knee during the national anthem in solidarity with NFL player Colin Kaepernick. "I've been able to have such an incredible career, and this game has brought me all over the world and allowed me to meet so many amazing people," said Rapinoe. "I feel incredibly grateful to have played as long as I have, to be as successful as we've been, and to have been a part of a generation of players who undoubtedly left the game better than they found it." "To be able to play one last World Cup and one last NWSL season and go out on my own terms is incredibly special," she added. Last July she received the highest civilian honour in the United States when President Joe Biden awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Rapinoe was the first footballer to receive the award and one of just six female athletes or coaches. "Beyond the World Cup title to Olympic medals, Megan is a champion for essential American truth that everyone is entitled to be treated with dignity and respect," Biden said at the award ceremony. "She helped lead the change for perhaps the most important victory for anyone on our soccer team or any soccer team: equal pay for women." US women's team coach Vlatko Andonovski said Rapinoe remained an important part of the team for the World Cup which starts on July 20. "Megan Rapinoe is one of the most important players in women's soccer history and a personality like no other," he said. "She has produced so many memorable moments for her team and the fans on the field that will be remembered for a very long time, but her impact on people as a human being may be even more important. "It's been a wonderful experience to coach her in the NWSL and for the national team and I'm looking forward to her being an important part of our team at the World Cup." The Californian has spent most of her career playing in domestic leagues but had a brief spell in Australia with W-League team Sydney FC in 2011 and two years later played for French club Lyon, reaching the final of the Champions League. At the 2019 World Cup in France, she scored in the 2-0 win over the Netherlands in the final and was named Player of the Match. She won the Golden Boot as top scorer and Golden Ball for best player in the tournament. sev/jc © Agence France-Presse The post United States women’s star Rapinoe to retire at end of season appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
PCCI envisions Manila a 1st world economy by 2050
The 49th edition of the Philippine Business Conference and Expo of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce on 25 to 26 October 2023 will dwell on the ambitious dream to make the Philippines a first-world economy, according to Feleno “Jun” Palafox Jr., chairperson for this year’s biggest convergence of business owners that will tackle issues hounding the country’s growth. Palafox said it may sound ambitious, but the Philippines becoming a first-world economy by 2050 is achievable if present challenges are addressed effectively. “We have to start now,” Palafox said. “Achieving this vision entails immediate, short-, medium-, long-term, and visionary goals, plans, and programs that address barriers to growth and sustain the development of the sectors where the country has a competitive edge,” he added. Initial step Palafox, who was involved in crafting the Philippine Development Plan (2023-2028) said that the initial step to take is to ensure the effective implementation of the five-year PDP plan. The PDP 2023-2028 is a plan for deep economic and social transformation to reinvigorate job creation and accelerate poverty reduction by steering the economy back on a high-growth path Further, Palafox said the Philippines’ strategic location, natural resources, and human capital resources (a demographic sweet spot), to name a few, are among the many advantages that will make the country a first-world economy by 2050. “Fundamental to maximizing benefits and returns from these resources is education or lifelong learning for the country’s human capital and demographic sweet spot, infrastructure to build on its strategic location and natural resources, and governance to fuel investments in key industries such as agriculture, mining and mineral resources, travel and tourism, manufacturing and information technology-business process management,” he said. Global excellence Palafox pointed out that leading the country to global excellence can be made possible through the effective implementation of plans and benchmarking on the best practices around the globe to improve the country’s plans and designs. Palafox also cited that with the strong collaboration between government, the private sector, and civil society and with four efficient, effective, visionary, and action-driven Presidents and administrations, the country could achieve its goals to join the list of first-world countries by 2040 and could rank as one of the top 20 economies in the by 2050. This year’s conference will gather thought leaders, policymakers, national and local government unit executives, top business leaders, and international leaders in what could be an interesting two-day discussion and sharing of insights geared toward achieving the 2050 vision. Traditionally, the PBC&E, the largest business conference in the country, opens with the Vice President of the Philippines and concludes with the Philippine President receiving a set of policy recommendations emanating from the various regional and industry consultations. Guitar smashed by Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain sells for nearly $600,000
A guitar smashed on stage by Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain sold for nearly $600,000, several times its original estimate, an auction house said Saturday. The busted black Fender Stratocaster has been put back together, but is no longer playable, Kody Frederick of Julien's Auctions told AFP earlier this month. It was signed by all three members of the Seattle grunge outfit as they rocketed to global fame. The auction house said it had expected the instrument to sell for $60,000 at the event in front of a live audience at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York City. Instead, it went for $595,000, Julien's said in a statement, calling the total "astounding." "You can see here the break that took place as he slammed down the guitar, where the neck here kind of connects, as well as down here on the bottom where he slammed the guitar down," Frederick told AFP earlier in May. "Kurt Cobain, when he was on stage when he played, he was a machine. The man was angry, and you could feel that on stage. And you would feel that by the way he would treat his instruments. "This broken element, in a strange way, from this broken musician, that really defined this rough and tumble era of music." Nirvana's hits, many of which were penned by Cobain, included "Come As You Are," "Lithium" and the 1991 breakout "Smells Like Teen Spirit" -- a track that became anthemic for a generation of alienated teenagers. Cobain struggled with substance addiction and depression and had a tumultuous relationship with his wife, Courtney Love. He took his own life in April 1994. The three-day auction, which concludes Sunday, also includes memorabilia from the careers of Eddie Van Halen, Elvis Presley, Freddie Mercury, Bill Wyman, and Janet Jackson. Excitement mounts for DiCaprio-Scorsese epic at Cannes
The Cannes Film Festival is set for another major Hollywood premiere on Saturday, as Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese bring their Native American crime epic, "Killers of the Flower Moon", to the French Riviera. The three-and-a-half-hour movie, which includes Scorsese's other long-time muse Robert De Niro, charts a wave of murders among the wealthy Osage Indians in the 1920s and the birth of the FBI. It will be followed by more Hollywood royalty when Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore premiere "May December" about an actress meeting the couple at the heart of a tabloid scandal. The competition for the festival's top prize Palme d'Or is heating up. An early front-runner is British director Jonathan Glazer's "The Zone of Interest", a unique and horrifying look at the private life of a Nazi officer working at the Auschwitz concentration camp. "The things that drive these people are familiar. Nice house, nice garden, healthy kids," Glazer told AFP. "How like them are we? How terrifying it would be to acknowledge. What is it that we're so frightened of understanding?" Critics were near-unanimous in their praise, with Variety calling it "chilling and profound, meditative and immersive, a movie that holds human darkness up to the light and examines it as if under a microscope". But there was also huge warmth for "Four Daughters", a heartbreaking documentary about radicalization within a Tunisian family that is both inventive and engaging. That may go down well with jury president Ruben Ostlund, last year's winner for "Triangle of Sadness", who likes his arthouse films with some lighter touches. A total of 21 films are in the main competition, which concludes on May 27, including previous winners such as Japan's Hirokazu Kore-eda, Germany's Wim Wenders, and Britain's Ken Loach. Ageing icons The weather has been untypically wet this year, but Cannes has had no shortage of splashy moments since kicking off on Tuesday with the controversial appearance of Johnny Depp. In his first movie since a bitter trial with ex-wife Amber Heard, Depp played French king Louis XV in "Jeanne du Barry", which received middling reviews, and festival director Thierry Fremaux irked online critics by saying "I don't care" about Depp's legal woes. The festival also saw an emotional appearance from Harrison Ford, receiving an honorary Palme d'Or at the world premiere of "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny". At the risk of turning this year's Cannes into a festival of aging Hollywood males, there was also an honorary Palme for Michael Douglas and an appearance from Sean Penn as a grizzled New York paramedic in "Black Flies". Italian-American icons But all eyes will be on the red carpet this Saturday as three icons of Italian-American cinema make their way to the Palais des Festivals. DiCaprio and De Niro are both long-time Scorsese collaborators. But the director has never before cast them in the same film, apart from a funny short in 2015, "The Audition", in which they competed for a part in his next movie. The film world is also painfully aware that it may be one of the last movies from the master behind "Goodfellas", "Raging Bull" and "Taxi Driver". In a poignant interview earlier this week, the 80-year-old Scorsese told Deadline, "I'm old... I want to tell stories, and there's no more time." "Taxi Driver" won the Palme d'Or in 1976, but he has not been back in the Cannes competition since 1985's lesser-known "After Hours", though he did serve as jury president in 1998. "Killers of the Flower Moon", which was funded by Apple, is showing out of competition. The post Excitement mounts for DiCaprio-Scorsese epic at Cannes appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
