Mober unveils Pasay charging hub for EV fleet
Green logistics pioneer Mober unveiled its P2-million electric vehicle charging station in Pasay City on Wednesday. The 800-square-meter charging hub in Zamora Street has 30 charging units for Mober’s fleet of 60 electric delivery trucks. “This inauguration symbolizes not just a milestone but a beacon of our overarching blueprint for an environmentally conscious logistic framework. And, we’re just getting started,”€Dennis Ng, Mober’s chief executive officer, said. Ng said Mober will add more EV charging stations in Metro Manila and 60 in Laguna that will cater to its southern fleet in the first quarter of 2024. He also revealed plans to incorporate more potent 22-kilowatt chargers along with a selection of direct current chargers in Cavite and Bulacan, amplifying Mober’s commitment to versatility and adaptability in its green infrastructure. The charging stations will eventually be opened to the general public, he added. Fast charging Equipped with the latest open charge point protocol, 7 kilowatt chargers compatible with both type 2 and GB/T (gigabyte/terabyte) standards, each charging point guarantees brisk charging sessions, ensuring the efficiency of Mober’s EV fleet exclusively earmarked for one of its IKEA customers. “We strategically opted for this charging capacity as our EV fleet remains dormant during nighttime, allowing optimal charging without overwhelming the grid,” Ng said. Beyond infrastructure, Mober’s unique partnership model provides an unprecedented advantage to businesses by allowing them to transition to green delivery operations with zero upfront costs, effectively democratizing access to green logistics. This hassle-free collaboration is pivotal in encouraging more companies to embrace sustainable logistics, reinforcing Mober’s role as a game-changer in the sector. Aligning with the progressive mandates of the Electric Vehicles and Charging Systems Act, Mober’s initiatives underscore the Philippines’ assertive stance on eco-driven policies and endeavors. With Mober’s pioneering approach, businesses have a definitive roadmap to swiftly decarbonize their last and mid-mile delivery systems, heralding a new era in business sustainability. Mober started in 2015 and was initially designed to help small and medium-sized enterprises solve their on-demand logistical needs. Eight years later, it became a business-to-business platform, facilitating sustainable delivery for retail giants such as IKEA Philippines, SM Appliance Center, Nestle Philippines and Nespresso. The company aims to become the leading green logistics delivery provider in Southeast Asia by securing a mixed fleet of 100 electric vans and trucks by the end of 2023. Frasco sees 34 million tourism workers by 2028
The tourism industry is seen to become lucrative for Filipinos, with Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco projecting that workers in the industry would balloon to 34 million. This was aired by Frasco at the 10th edition of the Global Tourism Economy Forum or GETF in Macao Special Administrative Region on Friday. “The Philippines envisions itself becoming the tourism powerhouse in Asia. A few years down the road, by 2028, we foresee that tourism would have been able to employ a total of over 34 million Filipinos in the country,” said the DoT chief, pertaining to data on tourism employment from 2023 to 2028 from the Department of Labor and Employment-National Labor and Employment Plan of 2028. Whole-of-nation approach She also noted the importance of the Philippines’ whole-of-nation approach toward tourism development by also capitalizing on other aspects of tourism equally. “With our President’s whole-of-nation approach towards tourism development, with an eye for sustainability, we envision that this will allow the Philippines to occupy a primary position in Asia, especially considering that what we wish to do is not only to further develop our nature and beach destinations — we are, after all, currently the world’s leading beach and dive destination — but also to approach a multidimensional tourism component to our development,” she said. “That means capitalizing well on the story of the Philippines, our heritage, our culture, and the work of our indigenous peoples and, overall, it is this comprehensive approach towards tourism development that we foresee would allow our country to have a sustainable tourism development in time to come,” stressed Frasco. Sustainability efforts Also during the forum, Frasco shared the Philippine government’s sustainability efforts for tourism and, at the same time, her bold prospects for the industry. “The Philippines is home to one of the longest coastlines in the world, as well as 70 to 80 percent of the Earth’s biodiversity. We are one of the most mega-biodiverse countries in the world and home to 10 percent of the world’s marine protected area,” she said. “Sustainability and tourism have been an absolute necessity and the driving force of development for our country. As early as 2009 with the passage of the law that created the Tourism Act, sustainable tourism was identified by our government as being integral to our socio-economic development, and therefore, that has been the guiding force towards the programs and plans for the development of our tourism industry,” the tourism chief added. Sustainability standpoint With the approved National Tourism Development Plan 2023-2028, she said that the approach for the country’s tourism blueprint was crafted from a sustainability standpoint incorporated under a seven-point agenda by which the DOT is currently operating at present. Justice Singh leads judicial innovations strat plan dialogue
An in-depth discussion of the Strategic Plan for Judicial Innovations 2022-2027 (SPJI) was conducted and led by Supreme Court Associate Justice Maria Filomena D. Singh to hasten its full implementation. The SPJI, a five-year program for the judiciary, is the SC’s blueprint for judicial reform. The workshop was held at the Interim Planning and Development Office (PDO) Strategic Planning Workshop in Tagaytay City on 10 August 2023, and was organized in cooperation with the Governance in Justice (GOJUST). “You have to be fearless as you will be indispensable in the realization, not just of the SPJI, but of all the reform projects and initiatives of the Court,” Justice Singh reminded the workshop participants as she stressed the importance of the PDO in the realization of the objectives of the SPJI. The PDO was established to monitor and evaluate the projects under the SPJI, ensuring their success. Speaking as workshop resource persons were Atty. Carolyn Mercado, senior adviser, Justice Policy and Engagement of GOJUST II Programme; Dr. Ramon Segismundo, chief executive officer of One HRX which provides strategic consulting and advisory services; Mr. Roland Ruiz, partner consultant, One HRX; Mr. Jaime Faustino, program director, Economic Reform and Development Entrepreneurship, The Asia Foundation; Ms. Maricel Aguilar, gender equality and social inclusion expert, GOJUST II Programme; and Mr. Ian Niccolo Tobia, monitoring, evaluation and learning officer, GOJUST II Programme. AI will not render lawyers obsolete — Justice Mario Lopez
“It is our humanity that renders us indispensable in the practice of law. We are humans guided by conscience and societal responsibility in the dispensation of ultimate justice.” This was according to Supreme Court Associate Justice Mario V. Lopez during the Commencement Exercises of the Arellano University School of Law on 20 July 2023 at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City. In addressing law graduates, Lopez emphasized that artificial intelligence (AI) is a mere tool for human utilization and not intended to replace humans, especially in the legal profession. “AI has no deep understanding of abstract concepts like justice, equity, compassion, and good conscience. Unlike judges, a robot cannot decide cases through the lens of judicial temperament, open-mindedness, integrity, and independence. Unlike lawyers, AI cannot think outside the box or be creative in its approach or cry out for fairness or detest injustice with courage and perseverance,” said Justice Lopez. Though Lopez acknowledged that AI can process information with accuracy and speed which humans cannot keep up with, he, however, stressed that it will not render lawyers obsolete. “The legal profession is more than simply applying the law to the facts, but rather, it is about filling these crevices of the law with our human reasoning,” he said, adding that “AI can never replace the human heart, moral values, critical thinking skills, and respect for the rule of law.” Calling them “digital natives,” Justice Lopez reminded future lawyers to use social media responsibly and to be guided by the new Code of Professional Responsibility and Accountability, one of the key initiatives under the Court’s blueprint of action for reforms—the Strategic Plan for Judicial Innovations 2022-2027. Lopez in closing, expressed optimism that as future lawyers, they will become proactive partners of the Court in reforming the Judiciary with the use of technology. SoNA 2023
Sophomore year is when familiarity has seeped in, and we get to know the people and terrain better. We gain momentum and confidence in the things we must do. On another note, we also learn about people’s strengths and previously hidden weaknesses. Personalities become more colored, and metrics will show actual performance when compared against campaign promises. The administration of President Bongbong R. Marcos Jr. will be of a different tune this time around. In 2022, the State of the Nation Address was filled with campaign promises and action plans that lay down the blueprint for the next six years. Just like any first SoNA of a new president, the atmosphere was jovial and enthusing. Second SoNAs are made right after the appointment of certain Cabinet members who lost in the previous election, and when presidential priorities are more evident. What makes sophomore SoNAs unique is that it is when the Administration is still new and with less political intentions in mind, if that is possible. Remember, the next elections are scheduled in 2025, thus, making next year’s 2024 SoNA the last one before the Administration’s senatorial bets are officially announced. Mid-year elections are crucial to sustaining the momentum of President Marcos Jr., and we can think of several of his loyal political soldiers who will be running for the Senate in 2025. The period from 2023 to 2024 is when the real work of government officials is felt, as they say — pure governmental service. Thereafter, 2024 to 2025 should be for election mode or the campaign season for the senatorial bets and all locally elected officials. All but the two highest positions and twelve senatorial seats will be up for grabs in 2025. The mood in the second half of the Administration will depend on the outcome of 2025. Surely, the banner announcement in Monday’s SoNA will be the newly signed Maharlika Investment Fund, which is the first sovereign wealth fund of the Philippines. This is a sophisticated financial instrument that should be a challenge for the Administration to explain to the common folk. Further, it can be explained, but would it be comprehended given that Filipinos tend to give their attention to short-term benefits, such as 4Ps and ayuda or aid? The Maharlika Investment Corporation or MIC, which will manage the sovereign fund, should make monthly reports that would be informative and easy to comprehend by Filipinos. The “Bagong Pilipinas” campaign of the Administration will be launched during the SoNA, hopefully eclipsing the “Love the Philippines” fiasco of Secretary Cristina Frasco of the DoT. Bagong Pilipinas comes with its own logo and probably a jingle, the same one used in the campaign of President Marcos Jr. The infrastructure slogan of the Administration, “Build, Better, More” or BBM, will have accomplishments to boast of. NEDA, the other day, approved three projects, the largest of which is the P170 billion NAIA Rehabilitation, thereby shunning the proposal of the private consortium, the Manila International Airport Consortium, consisting of several of the country’s billionaires, that was valued at P267 billion. The decision of the President to side with the proposal of the government, instead of the businessmen who were seemingly close to him having been part of the delegations in his earlier state visits and trips abroad, should be respected and applauded. Geopolitics will play a role in the recent ICC decision to continue its probe into the alleged drug killings and the surprise visit of former President Rodrigo Duterte to Xi Jinping in China. We will eagerly anticipate what President Marcos Jr. will have to say about them. The SoNA always elicits curiosity and excitement, and the 2023 SONA should be no different. ASEAN network hails Go Negosyo gains
Members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Mentorship for Entrepreneurs network or AMEN gave Go Negosyo founder and chairperson Joey Concepcion a pat on the back for the efficient delivery of the movement’s targeted outputs focused on mentoring micro, small and medium enterprises or MSMEs. AMEN is the legacy project during the term of the Philippines as chair of the ASEAN-Business Advisory Council in 2017 under Concepcion. He expressed his delight that other nations are now benefiting from mentorship adding that “access to mentorship is critical to an entrepreneur’s success and with AMEN, we are able to share this with the rest of ASEAN.” “MSMEs comprise the majority of the businesses in the Philippines, and this is almost the same for our neighboring countries. Nano, micro, and small entrepreneurs are the most in need and we will continue to make sure that this legacy project will continue,” he added. Human capital dev’t promoted Legacy projects incorporate private-public partnerships to promote human capital development and entrepreneurship in the region, with each country initiating its own legacy project during its chairmanship of the private sector advisory body of the ASEAN. The feedback from the region on the AMEN report comes as its Joint Coordinating Committee convened its second meeting during the 15th ASEAN Coordinating Committee on Micro Small and Medium Enterprise Meeting last 22 to 26 May in Bangkok, Thailand. MSMEs comprise the majority of the businesses in the Philippines, and this is almost the same for our neighboring countries. Nano, micro and small entrepreneurs are the most in need and we will continue to make sure that this legacy project will continue. Last 23 May, the Project Management Office led by Project executive director, Engr. Merly Cruz, presented the achievements and milestones of the AMEN Project Phase 2 thus far together with the challenges encountered, lessons learned, and recommendations put forward by the project stakeholders. AMEN’s Phase 2 is near completion after having been rolled out in February 2023, which involves the regional rollout of the project after having been successfully piloted in Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. The AMEN Project Phase 2 is implemented by the ASEAN-BAC Business Advisory Council, together with the ASEAN Secretariat and the Government of Japan through the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund. AMEN is a modules-based training program facilitated by accredited mentors. Go Negosyo originated the blueprint for AMEN, and patterned it after its Kapatid Mentor Micro-Enterprises Program, which runs in partnership with the country’s Department of Trade and Industry. The KMME program has been implemented in the Philippines since 2016 and has since produced more than 13,000 graduates. Ishawna, Ed Sheeran team up for dancehall track
Ishawna, one of the leading voices of a new generation of female dancehall artists, has teamed up with Ed Sheeran for the “Brace It” music video, Ed’s first official dancehall collaboration. Written by Cordel “Skatta” Burrell, Ed Sheeran and Ishawna with top Jamaican producers behind the production, the modern dancehall hit “Brace It” sees Ishawna officially induct Ed Sheeran into the dancehall fraternity. The track has topped the iTunes Reggae Chart and racked up over 6 million streams. Directed by Filmheads Cuban director Jose-Emilio Sagaro (Bad Bunny, J Balvin, Anuel AA), the official music video was filmed between London and Miami, mirroring the stars’ long-distance friendship. Their collaboration came together after Sheeran fell in love with Ishawna’s “Equal Rights” cover of his single “Shape of You” while he was in the Caribbean in 2017. The two began interacting over social media, leading to Ishawna sharing another track she was working on. Ed loved it and immediately sent an instrumental and blueprint idea which Ishawna blended into an eclectic mix of strumming guitar and old school dancehall rhythms, thus giving birth to “Brace It.” Representing a turning point in Ishawna’s career, the “Brace It” music video is her first official release on Payday Records and marks the beginning of a series of new music releases for the artist set for 2023.
