Abueva takes on former team as Fuel Masters gun for third straight win vs Aces
All eyes will be on Calvin Abueva as he faces his former team. (PBA Images) Phoenix Super LPG hopes to build on the successful comeback of Calvin Abueva when it battles his former team Alaska on Thursday in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Angeles University Foundation Sports and Cultural Center. What Abueva has for an encore will be known in the 4 p.m. opener as the Fuel Masters (4-2) go for a third straight victory against the Aces (4-3), who are also riding on an impressive run of three wins in the last four outings. Unbeaten leader TNT looks to shrug off the rust factor as it aims for a sixth win opposite slumping NLEX (1-5) at 6:45 p.m. The Tropang Giga are slated to see action for the first time in eight days after Monday’s game against the NorthPort Batang Pier was postponed as a precautionary measure after facing the Blackwater Elite last week. One of Blackwater’s player is currently under quarantine after he had an initial positive result for COVID-19. He has since been declared negative in the succeeding antigen and RT-PCR tests. Abueva played as if he was not out of action for 16 months due to an indefinite suspension, posting 21 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists in Phoenix’s 114-110 triumph against NLEX. With Abueva back, many see Phoenix as a team with a legitimate chance of winning the crown, something Alaska coach Jeffrey Cariaso acknowledges. “We’re in a situation where Phoenix is already playing well, they added Calvin, who would give them an extra spark — extra All-Star. So we’re gonna have our hands full,” said Cariaso as he eyes to keep the same grit that enabled Alaska to buck a 0-2 start. Alaska is coming off a 99-96 victory over Terrafirma last Tuesday......»»
Belga stars in OT as Rain or Shine continues good run inside bubble
Beau Belga delivered when it mattered most in the overtime period. (PBA Images) Beau Belga had the last laugh with a stirring performance Tuesday night as Rain or Shine grinded out an 85-82 overtime win over Barangay Ginebra San Miguel in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Angeles University Foundation Sports and Cultural Center. Belga scored five of his 20 points in the five-minute extension, a follow-up after missing a layup and a three-pointer that gave the Elasto Painters an 83-78 lead, and added 10 rebounds and four assists as the Elasto Painters pulled out a win while handing the Kings a second straight loss following a 4-0 start. But Rain or Shine needed one lucky break to secure its fourth win in five games inside the bubble known as Smart Clark Giga City after Ginebra cut the deficit to 83-80. Jewel Ponferada retrieved the ball after Rey Nambatac slipped before hitting a running one-hander for his only points with five seconds to go to make it an 85-80 lead for the Elasto Painters. Rain or Shine bounced back after falling short against Alaska, 89-88, last week while needing an extra day of rest when Sunday’s game with Blackwater was cancelled due after one of the Elite’s players initially tested positive for COVID-19. No one motivated coming into the game more than Belga, who was out to prove something after seeing a social media comment earlier in the day. “May isang hater na binatikos ako sa social media na puro pananakit lang daw ginagawa ko sa PBA and I just to prove him wrong,” Belga said during a postgame interview on One Sports. Coach Caloy Garcia was also glad that Belga was not the only player to step up for the Elasto Painters. Mark Borboran scored 16 points and grabbed five rebounds while James Yap earned a starting role and produced a season-high 13 points. Nambatac only had eight points, but produced one of the game’s biggest shot with a three-pointer that tied the knot at 76-all with 2.1 seconds to go in regulation. Kris Rosales also scored all of his eight points in the first quarter that saw Rain or Shine take a 24-15 lead and forced Ginebra to play catch up throughout. Ginebra had to slowly inch its way back from being down 39-24 in the second behind Stanley Pringle and Scottie Thompson. Pringle’s jumper put the Kings ahead, 74-73, with over two minutes remaining in the fourth before Borboran missed two free throws and Gabe Norwood muffing a medium-range jumper. LA Tenorio got fouled and made a pair of charities for a three-point Ginebra lead before Nambatac continued his knack to have the ball in the clutch with the game-tying triple on the next play. Thompson finished with 21 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, two steals and two blocks and Pringle had 20 points, seven rebounds and six assists but Ginebra couldn’t recover from Sunday’s loss to sibling rival Magnolia. The scores: RAIN OR SHINE 85 — Belga 20, Borboran 13, Yap 12, Nambatac 8, Rosales 8, Onwubere 3, Norwood 3, Ponferada 2, Wong 0, Torres 0. GINEBRA 82 — Thompson 21, Pringle 20, Aguilar J. 13, Tenorio 10, Devance 6, Caperal 5, Mariano 3, Chan 2, Dillinger 2, Tolentino 0. Quarters: 24-15, 45-36, 61-57, 76-76 (Reg), 85-82 (OT)......»»

Cone rewards Japeth with more minutes ‘to get him in shape’
Japeth Aguilar topscored Barangay Ginebra with 20 points against Meralco. (PBA Images) Some were probably wondering why coach Tim Cone kept Japeth Aguilar on the floor even though Barangay Ginebra San Miguel already had the game won against Meralco Sunday night. “I left him out there the whole time, just so to get him in shape,” Cone said after Ginebra’s 105-91 victory at the Angeles University Foundation Sports and Cultural Center. Aguilar finished with a game-high 20 points, scoring nine during a nine-minute appearance in the fourth quarter, something Cone said is something he rarely does. But Cone explained that having such exposure even in a blowout contest could bode well for Aguilar in the long run since the Finals Most Valuable Player of last season’s Governors’ Cup entered the bubble only days before the restart. And it has resulted in averages of 9.0 points and 3.0 rebounds in wins over NLEX and Blackwater. “We really don’t have time to get him in shape by working out because the games come so fast,” said Cone. “Though we have a big margin, I wasn’t taking Japeth out. That’s unusual for me, but I saw it as a purpose and to stay on the floor and keep working. Hopefully that will make him better into our next game.” Ginebra is hoping that would be the case as it enters a stretch of difficult games against tough opponents. The Kings return to action on Wednesday against the Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters, who opened the conference with two straight wins. Next is Ginebra’s “Bubble Clasico” showdown with Magnolia on Sunday followed by a clash with another sister team in defending five-time champion San Miguel Beer on Oct. 30......»»

Rebirth of Nash Racela
Nash Racela has steered Blackwater to an early success inside the bubble. (PBA Images) ANGELES CITY–Blackwater’s new coach Nash Racela seemed like he hasn’t skipped a beat despite missing the PBA sidelines for a long time. Racela steered the Elite to a 2-1 record in the Philippine Cup at the expense of the winless NLEX, 98-88, on Saturday at the Smart 5G-powered Angeles University Foundation Sports and Cultural Center. But the 48-year-old mentor bared that it wasn’t easy for him to return to the league after losing his post in TNT KaTropa two years ago. “When I got kicked out of Talk N’ Text (TNT), in a way I lost interest in the PBA. I wasn’t watching the game for at least a year,” said Racela. The former Far Eastern University tactician led TNT to a finals and five playoffs appearances in two years. But the KaTropa’s underwhelming performance early in the 2018 Commissioner’s Cup prompted the management to put him on leave and eventually replace him with current head coach Bong Ravena. Racela found his way back to the PBA after he signed a two-year deal with Blackwater in November last year. He could only thank his current Elite squad for helping him readjust to the league. “What really helped me was number one, ‘yung coaches and players that we have. They’ve been helping me a lot by giving inputs,” said Racela, whose familiarity with PBA also encouraged him to take another shot at coaching in the pros. “Number two is really the familiarity. Most of the players I know, the team tendencies and the coaches are the same,” he said. “Those are the things that really helped me to slowly be comfortable with coaching again in the PBA.” .....»»

PBA: Blackwater making 'slow growth' before pandemic, news of sale
Blackwater is all over the news these days for all the wrong reasons. Aside from the fines and potential other penalties the team faces, the bigger issue is the sale of the franchise. Team owner Dioceldo Sy has put the Blackwater Elite for sale with an asking price of P150 million, that's out there already. [Related: PBA: Blackwater franchise for sale at P150 million] However, unless a buyer quickly picks the team up, the Elite will play in the PBA, perhaps as early as in a couple of months as the league attempts to finish the 2020 Philippine Cup amid the COVID-19 pandemic. So what's up with Blackwater's actual team? "We always believe in the saying na 'slow progress is still progress.' Okay lang samin as long as we improve, yun ang mindset before the pandemic," head coach Nash Racela said about the team on Coaches Unfiltered. "We were happy with how we were developing as a team. If you've watched us during our first tuneup game, tambak kami medyo nakakahiya. But towards the end of February mas gumaganda na takbo namin. As long as we focus on those things, on slow growth, okay kami," he added. Coach Nash is taking over the Elite this year, after coach Aris Dimaunahan handled to team for most of 2019 on an interim basis. Blackwater now features a core of former FEU players like Mac Belo, Mike Tolomia, and Carl Bryan Cruz. The transition should be easier for the team since all of them played for Racela in the UAAP. "In terms of system naman, I've been consistent ever since," coach Nash said. "I think with Blackwater, I'm fortunate to have a group of young players who could really run and put pressure on the defense. Yun yung gusto namin na maging consistent," he added. Aside from a number of former Tamaraws, the Elite also have the oldest rookie in the league in 6'9" Maurice Shaw, the no. 2 pick of the 2019 regular Draft. Blackwater has a role for its new big man, but all of the Elites hopes don't necessarily fall upon him. "With Maurice Shaw, initially nagse-set kami ng not-so-high goals for him, we want him to be the anchor of the defense," Racela said. "Based din sa games namin nagagawa naman niya. Slowly, he's been adjusting to the style of the PBA. In terms of scoring, as long as nandoon siya sa spot niya. We're very positive with Maurice Shaw," he added. — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

PBA: Blackwater franchise for sale at P150 million
Blackwater's PBA franchise is up for sale. On Tuesday night, Philippine Star sports editor Nelson Beltran broke the story that the Elite are eyeing a PBA exit. In a report by Abac Cordero also for the Star, Blackwater team owner Dioceldo Sy bared that he's selling the Elite franchise for P150 million. "I’m open to entertain interested parties as it’s hard for me to continue supporting the PBA when my heart is no longer there,” Sy was quoted as saying. Blackwater entered the PBA during the 2014-2015 season as part of two expansion teams, the other being the Kia Sorento now known as the Terra Firma Dyip. In 15 conferences, the Elite only made the playoffs four times and never made it past the quarterfinals. The closest Blackwater got to the semis was last season in the Commissioner's Cup when the third-ranked Elite lost to Rain or Shine in Game 3 of their best-of-3 series. Recent team moves for Blackwater include drafting Maurice Shaw in the 2019 PBA Draft. The 35-year-old, 6'9" center was the second pick in the regular draft behind Roosevelt Adams for the Dyip. The Elite also tapped Nash Racela to take over as head coach after Aris Dimaunahan handled the team for most of 2019 under an interim basis. Blackwater was already in the news this week after Sy said on "Sports Page" by One Sports that the team has started to conduct workouts. However, this came before the PBA's official go-signal and in turn, the Elite were requested to provide explanation to the league and to the Games and Amusements Board. — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»
Tab s unfiltered comments shook up Philippine coaching fraternity
Reactions to Tab Baldwin's now-controversial unfiltered comments about the PBA come from all sorts of places, but it seems like the general consensus is that he disrupted the Philippine coaching fraternity that's supposedly built on brotherhood. Hoops Coaches International, established by Blackwater's Ariel Vanguardia for webinars featuring local and foreign coaches, issued a statement about Baldwin's comments about the PBA last week. The Ateneo coach called the PBA's one-import tournaments as a "big mistake" and said local coaches as having "tactical immaturity." [Related: Unfiltered Baldwin comments on the PBA's "big mistake"] Hoops Coaches International is focusing on the tactical immaturity part on condemning Baldwin's comments. The very existence of webinars by Hoops Coaches International is to help advance the level of coaches here. Current and former PBA coaches like Tim Cone, Norman Black, Yeng Guiao, Mark Dickel, Jeffrey Cariaso, and Bill Bayno have all appeared in the webinars. A number of foreign coaches have shared their expertise as well. "We have hosted a number of webinars because we are aware that we do not have all the answers. That in order to compete with the best, we have to expose our coaches to a plethora of ideas, theories, and practices from successful coaches that work with all age groups and levels, from all leagues," the statement read. "Only by raising the level of coaching at the grassroots and provincial level can we move the needle," the statement added. [Related: Northport owner on Tab's PBA comments: "Sounds like racism"] Hoops Coaches International acknowledged some of Coach Tab's points but his comments on local coaches seem to have done more harm than good especially with the reaction that followed. "We have long believed that a coaching fraternity is built on a foundation of camaraderie and a free exchange of ideas," Hoops Coaches International said in its statement directed to Baldwin. "So, it is disheartening to hear that instead of helping the Filipino coaching community grow towards a higher standard, you saw it fit to put us down," the statement added. — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»
Desiderio names 3 PBA players that gave him the 'wow factor'
For incoming second-year guard Paul Desiderio, there are three PBA players who truly gave him the wow factor in the PBA. Blackwater's former no. 4 pick named TNT's Jayson Castro, San Miguel Beer's Alex Cabagnot, and Magnolia's PJ Simon as the guys that stood out to him once he made it to the league following an inspiring UAAP stint with the UP Fighting Maroons. Desiderio made the reveal on Extra Rice with Rain or Shine's Beau Belga. "Unang-una, na-ano talaga ako sa basketball IQ ni coach Alex [Cabagnot]," Desiderio said. "Tapos, si Jayson Castro sobrang bilis. Then si Peter June Simon, yun talaga ginagaya-gaya ko. Talagang idol na idol ko yun, bawat galaw niya," he added. In an on-the-spot scenario, Mr. Atin 'To also named the player he'll start, bench, and cut. Desiderio got pretty logical with the player he was going to cut. "Ang hirap naman. Pero start ko si kuya Jayson, kasi nga best point guard in Asia. Then bench ko si coach Alex," he said. "Syempre pa-retire na rin si kuya PJ, siya na lang cut ko," Desiderio added. — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»
