Defector’s plea: Don’t send me back
A Chinese activist who fled to Taiwan is holed up in a local airport, pleading authorities no to send him back to his country. “I hope to seek asylum in the United States or Canada. I request for friends to appeal to Taiwan’s government to please not send me back to China,” Chen Siming wrote on X from the transit area of Taoyuan International Airport. Chen said he fled China three months ago because the methods used by authorities “to maintain stability are becoming more brutal.” He also alleged that Chinese authorities had detained him in the past, confiscated his phone, and conducted a psychiatric evaluation on him. “I could no longer endure (it)... so I fled China on 22 July,” Chen wrote. “On September 22, I finally arrived in Taiwan, the island of freedom.” According to Radio Free Asia, Chen first traveled to Laos after leaving China in July, before crossing into Thailand. But due to worries about being sent to immigration prison in Thailand — a country with a track record of deporting dissidents — he bought a return ticket to China that transited via Taiwan, RFA said. Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council has not responded to requests for comment on Chen’s current status. In 2019 two Chinese dissidents spent more than four months trapped in limbo at Taiwan’s airport after fleeing China. France orders Apple iPhone 12 sales halted over radiation
French regulators on Tuesday ordered Apple to halt sales of the iPhone 12 for emitting too much electromagnetic radiation and to fix existing handsets. The French agency that regulates radio frequencies, the ANFR, said testing found that the model emits more electromagnetic waves susceptible to be absorbed by the body than permitted. The ANFR said it "ordered Apple to remove the iPhone 12 from the French market from September 12 due to the model exceeding the limit" for electromagnetic absorption by the body. It said accredited labs had found absorption of electromagnetic energy by the body at 5.74 watts per kilogram during tests simulating when the phone was being held in the hand or kept in a pocket. The European standard is a specific absorption rate of 4.0 watts per kilogram in such tests. "Concerning phones already sold, Apple must in the briefest of delays take corrective measures to bring the affected phones into compliance," said the ANFR in a statement on its website. "Otherwise, Apple will have to recall them." ANFR noted that tests that measure the electromagnetic radiation absorbed at a distance of five centimeters was in compliance with the limit of 2.0 watts per kilogram. ANFR said its agents would verify beginning Wednesday that iPhone 12 models were no longer being offered for sale in France. When contacted by AFP, Apple insisted in a statement that it is compliant with exposure limits and would continue to engage with the French regulator to demonstrate that. Regulators in a number of countries have limits on the amount of electromagnetic radiation mobile phones may emit to prevent adverse health effects. The World Health Organization states on its website that following a large number of studies "no adverse health effects have been established as being caused by mobile phone use". Marina Adams debuts in Asia
Longlati Foundation presents Marina Adams’ debut institutional solo exhibition in Asia, In the Garden of My Memory, featuring 11 large-scale acrylic and watercolor paintings and four scroll intaglio monoprints on paper inspired by Chinese folded books. Poetry is a crucial component of Adams’ artistic practice, intertwining language and painting, opening a pathway through its ineffable sensory experience. In the Garden of My Memory is derived from Ted Berrigan’s poem “Tambourine Life.” Perhaps this phrase struck Adams in her studio on a summer afternoon and leapt off the page. Here, it functions as a cryptic invitation, inviting viewers to journey through the artist’s vibrant realm of memories constructed through colors. Like poetry, Adams’ artworks don’t provide specific imagery or narratives, yet they vividly convey her perspectives and contemplation of the world. Impressions drawn from nature, music, fabrics, architecture and literature are transformed into dynamic colors, humming with the physical resonance of individual existence through the canvas as if its structure were a kind of grammar, and light and shadow serve as its tones. These pieces traverse the boundaries of diverse logical fields, directly reaching the channels of individual senses. [gallery columns="2" size="full" ids="180075,180073"] Adams’ creations should be understood as abstract expressionism within the realm of color field painting. On the one hand, she follows the tradition of color field painting, emphasizing the ontological superiority of overall form and color in the painting, thereby discarding the once-prominent symbols and rhetoric. On the other hand, distinct from the typical serenity and meticulousness of color field paintings, she consistently infuses her colors with spiritual energy, imbuing her paintings with vitality. They undoubtedly emanate from the artist’s bodily rhythm, interpreted into live abstractions through brushes and pigments. Adams earned degrees from Tyler School of Art, Temple University, Philadelphia, and Columbia University in New York. She is the recipient of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship (2016) and the Award of Merit Medal for Painting from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (2018). She has participated in various solo and group exhibitions, including the Parrish Art Museum, Water Mill, New York (2021), Modern Art Museum, Fort Worth (2020), Camden Arts Centre, London (2016) and CUE Art Foundation, New York (2008). Marina Adams’ work is in the collections of the MoMA, New York, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Texas, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Longlati Foundation, Shanghai. She lives and works in New York, Bridgehampton, Long Island and Parma in Italy. Co-founded by David Su and Zihao Chen in 2017, Longlati Foundation is a non-profit organization registered in Hong Kong. It aims to contribute to the development of contemporary art in its diversity. Curated by Jenny Chen Jiaying, In the Garden of My Memory runs from 14 September to 25 October on the third floor of Longlati Foundation, 117 Hong Kong Road, Huangpu District, Shanghai, China. Possible oil spill looms in Batangas
Another oil spill is being monitored in the province of Batangas following the sinking of a fishing vessel Sunday morning which was carrying thousands of liters of diesel, according to Protect Verde Island Passage on Monday. The group disclosed that the fishing vessel, which was carrying 70,000 liters of diesel when it sank off the coast of Calatagan sparked fears of another oil spill as the area — part of the internationally acclaimed biodiversity hotspot Verde Island Passage — still struggles to recover from the MT Princess Empress tragedy that spilled 900,000 liters of industrial oil exactly six months prior. Also on Monday, the Philippine Coast Guard confirmed the report, saying that a total of 13 crew members were successfully rescued when fishing vessel Anita DJ II submerged around seven nautical miles from the shoreline of Cape Santiago, Barangay Bagong Silang, Calatagan. “At 6:45 a.m., Coast Guard Station Batangas received a phone contact from Agutaya police stating authorities of an alleged submerged vessel within Batangas’ jurisdiction. The Coast Guard received information from the mother of one of the crew that the distressed boat was submerged in the waters off the coast of Batangas,” the PCG report said. The PCG added that the distressed boat with a gross tonnage of 448.83 tons and net tonnage of 273.59 tons is owned by IRMA Fishing, departed Navotas Port Sunday dawn bound for Palawan fishing grounds. “Coast Guard Station Batangas coordinated with IRMA Fishing Company and directed them to provide a tugboat for the towing operation of the subject vessel. Likewise, they also coordinated with Harbor Star Towage Company and requested assistance in which the company’s Motor Tug Great Lark proceeded to the said location to carry out possible towing operations,” according to the PCG. The search and rescue team of Coast Guard Sub Station Calatagan sighted the distressed vessel and immediately approached the Fishing Banca Rainbow Warrior to rescue the 13 crew aboard and bring them to the nearest shoreline. The search and rescue team along with 13 rescued crew members of the vessel safely arrived at CGSS Calatagan. The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office also provided medical assistance to the rescued crew. “BRP Bagacay (MRRV-4410), a 44-meter multi-role response vessel operated by PCG, was dispatched to respond to the distressed vessel. MRRV 4410 reported the stricken boat to be half-submerged about 1:35 p.m. and confirmed its sinking at 3:17 p.m. on Sunday in waters 2.16 nautical miles South-southwest of Cape Santiago in Calatagan Island. The reason behind the mishap is currently being investigated,” the PCG said. Meantime, the PCG said it also coordinated with the MDRRMO to prepare available oil spill response and local tourism officials to inform resort owners and local barangays to be vigilant for possible oil spills. A Zoom shift
Voice over Internet Protocol technology is becoming the norm for businesses following the move of tech giants such as Zoom Video Communications, Inc. to modernize communication. The real estate Industry in the Philippines, being one of the key drivers of the economy, is now taking advantage of these technologies, moving forward in their digital transformation journey to better serve the country. Property giant Megaworld, which introduced live-work-play townships in the Philippines in the late 90s by launching Eastwood City, is strengthening its foothold at the forefront of innovation in real estate by embracing technology to elevate the customer experience. Sharing a common goal to utilize digital innovation as a business enabler, Megaworld joins hands with Globe Business and Zoom to transform communication. “Communication holds a paramount significance for Globe, having our roots as a telco. But now that we’ve become a TechCo, or tech company, we understand the need for digital tools that work together in an ecosystem, which is what Zoom provides,” said KD Dizon, Head of Globe Business. By enabling industries, such as real estate through this partnership with Megaworld, we can help shape the future and achieve more things in service of the Filipino people.” Megaworld has redefined the business of real estate in the Philippines by creating vibrant and dynamic townships that integrate residential condominiums, offices, hotels, and lifestyle malls for their communities. As the real estate development arm of the Andrew Tan-led Alliance Global Group Inc., Megaworld has consistently shaped the nation’s urban landscape. “Megaworld is now venturing into a new chapter of sustaining our business with technology as a valuable enabler. As a company, our purpose has always been to create ecosystems where people and our partners, particularly our clients, can grow as we elevate their customer experience,” said Lino Victorioso Jr., Head of Corporate Financial Services Group for Megaworld. “With this collaboration with Globe Business and Zoom, we intend to do just that as we fulfill our mission of uplifting lives, impacting society, and helping shape the nation.” With the Zoom Phone licenses provided by Globe Business, Megaworld’s employees have access to modernized and reliable communication tools. Biden declares Hawaii fires a ‘major’ disaster, unblocks federal aid
US President Joe Biden on Thursday declared the Hawaii wildfires a "major disaster," unblocking federal funds for the hard-hit island of Maui after the flames claimed at least 36 lives and razed a historic town. "Today, President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. declared that a major disaster exists in the State of Hawaii and ordered federal aid to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the areas affected by wildfires," a White House statement said. Brushfires on Maui's west coast -- fueled by high winds from a hurricane passing to the south -- broke out Tuesday and rapidly engulfed the seaside town of Lahaina, forcing some residents to flee into the ocean. Biden's office said he had spoken Thursday by phone with Hawaii Governor Josh Green. The president "expressed his deep condolences for the lives lost and vast destruction of land and property," the White House said. Wildfire destroys Hawaii town, kills 36
A wildfire fanned by strong winds from a typhoon off the coast of Hawaii’s Maui island destroyed a tourist town, killed at least 36 people and cut power affecting 13,000 people, officials said on Wednesday. “As the firefighting efforts continue, 36 total fatalities have been discovered today amid the active Lahaina fire,” the Maui county government said in a statement. Residents of Lahaina trapped by the fast-moving fire were forced to jump into the ocean to escape death. “People are jumping into the water to avoid the fire,” United States Army Major General Kenneth Hara, the state adjutant general, told Hawaii News Now. The Coast Guard said it had “successfully rescued 12 individuals from the waters off Lahaina” and it was sending other vessels to Maui. Hara said strong winds had prevented helicopters from being used to carry out rescues or fight the fires. Lahaina resident Claire Kent said that homeless people and people without access to vehicles seemed to have been trapped in the town. Kent also said power and cell phone coverage had been knocked out Tuesday. Emergency services were overwhelmed by the blaze that appeared to have erupted almost without warning. “911 is down. Cell service is down. Phone service is down,” Lieutenant Governor Sylvia Luke told CNN. “Much of Lahaina on Maui has been destroyed and hundreds of local families have been displaced,” Governor Josh Green said. Chrissy Lovitt told the outlet every boat in Lahaina Harbor had burned. Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen told a press conference that Maui’s hospital “was overburdened with burn patients, people suffering from inhalation.” A video posted on social media showed blazes tearing through the heart of the beachfront town and sending up huge plumes of black smoke. Taiwan charges dad, son, 2 soldiers for spying
Taiwan authorities have charged a father, his son and two soldiers with espionage for tipping China with information on the island’s largest military exercise. The Taiwan High Prosecutors Office’s Tainan branch identified the father and son only with their surname, Huang, while the soldiers worked for the air force’s air defense and missile division. The Huangs were charged with violating national security law and the state secrets protection act, while the soldiers were indicted for violating the Criminal Code of the Armed Forces and for corruption. The Huangs moved to Fujian, China in 2015 to do business and were “lured” by two Chinese officials to collect confidential Taiwan defense documents, the THPO said. They then recruited the soldiers to obtain documents about the Han Kuang exercise — Taiwan’s largest annual wargames which took place two weeks ago — and “other confidential military documents” to hand over to Chinese officials either in person or by mobile phone, prosecutors said. 23 dead, six missing as boat capsizes in Philippine lake
A small passenger boat capsized in a lake near the Philippine capital on Thursday, killing 23 people on board and leaving six missing, rescuers said. The accident happened in the early afternoon at Laguna lake, near Manila, hours after Typhoon Doksuri had swept out of the northern Philippines. "Some survivors begged us to rescue those trapped beneath the boat," resident Monica de la Cruz, who watched the rescue effort off the municipality of Binangonan, told AFP. "They were crying and some of them were injured." Cruz said the accident took place following a "sudden gust of wind, big waves and rain", with locals initially too afraid to assist, fearing they would be "dragged down as well". The wooden outrigger "encountered strong winds prompting all passengers to panic" and move to one side of the vessel, the coast guard said in a statement. "The boat had clearance to sail," coast guard spokesman Rear Admiral Armando Balilo told reporters, downplaying speculation the typhoon had caused the accident. The passenger boat was making its regular run from a Binangonan port to the island of Talim in the middle of the lake, municipality rescue official Kenneth Cirados told AFP. Rescuers retrieved 23 bodies from the water and there were 40 survivors, he said. Six people remained missing with the search set to resume Friday. By nightfall, rescuers had righted the boat and dragged it close to shore, where its yellow hull sat in shallow water. A broken motorcycle cargo and soiled pieces of tarp were draped over it. "The boat sank in front of us while on its way home to the island," said Binangonan resident Frederic Sison, who had been standing at the Kalinawan port when the incident happened. Video footage of the rescue shared by the coast guard showed a man standing on the hull of the boat that was lying on its side, shouting "There are so many people here", as small outrigger boats circled trying to help. Another clip showed two rescuers leaning from the side of a boat to pluck a person who appeared to be unconscious from the calm waters. Mobile phone footage taken by Sison and shared with AFP showed anxious people standing on the shore watching the boats take part in the frantic rescue effort. In the video, a young boatman said he saved four people including a disabled person and a girl. A woman could be seen doing chest compressions on one of several victims laid out on the concrete pier, as men lifted more motionless people out of small boats. Boats, including wooden outriggers and passenger ferries that provide transport between islands, had been ordered to shore in Luzon and central islands earlier in the week due to gale warnings as the typhoon intensified the southwest monsoon. The Philippines, an archipelago of more than 7,000 islands, has a poor maritime safety record, with scores dying in mishaps at sea each year, usually aboard wooden-hulled outriggers used for fishing or to move people from one small island to another. Innovative architecture in Panglao Shores
Sustainability and innovation in architecture are intertwined and increasingly integral to responsible design, proving that they are not mutually exclusive but rather complementary aspects. Panglao Shores in Bohol, designed by XCO2, showcases the integration of sustainability and innovation in architecture. The project takes a proactive stance by prioritizing the reduction of energy, water and waste demands as core elements of its development approach. Despite pandemic-related challenges and supply chain disruptions, the design team for Panglao Shores showed exceptional resilience compared to other regional developers. Their self-sufficiency-oriented approach, utilizing local materials, aimed to achieve the highest standards of sustainable design. Through innovative yet straightforward design techniques, they effectively reduced energy demand, minimizing the reliance on advanced technology and lowering carbon dioxide emissions. “The design team had to look for innovative ways to do so without compromising guest comfort and experience,” XCO2 executive John Farrell told the Daily Tribune, adding that they were able to predict the energy-saving benefits of a variety of design techniques at once by using dynamic simulation tools. “Looking at ways to provide shading and reduce the ingress of unwanted solar heat into guestrooms and occupied spaces lead to a significant reduction in the cooling demand and therefore a reduction in the size of plant for cooling while also saving money on running costs,” Farrell added. XCO2 also emphasized the value of investing time in early-stage design to implement optimum strategies, eliminating unnecessary engineering. “By combining sustainable practices with innovative design thinking, architects can create buildings and spaces that are environmentally responsible, resource-efficient, aesthetically pleasing and supportive of the well-being of occupants and the surrounding community,” Farrell said. “We are likely to see a rise in the priority of designing buildings to promote better health and well-being for its users.” Panglao Shores, a masterplan development located on the picturesque Panglao Island in Bohol, offers stunning views of the Mindanao Sea and encompasses a wide range of amenities, such as retail and commercial areas, residential villages, hotels, international resorts and a beach club. This expansion project aims to enhance the existing South Palms Resort and bolster the tourism infrastructure of the Central Visayas region, recognizing the island’s significance as the 10th largest in the Philippines. Covering more than 57 hectares, the development prioritizes sustainability and adheres to international environmental standards, ensuring a competitive advantage in the industry. Leveled up smartphone’s midrange game
When it comes to phones, we want something that can provide flawless performance and a "premium feel," yet they usually come at a high price. Thankfully, the new Samsung Galaxy A54 5G eliminates the need for compromise by providing the best of both worlds. Here are some ways that the Samsung Galaxy A54 5G delivers an awesome flagship-like experience at its mid-range price: High-End Aesthetic Feels One of the first things we consider for a phone is the captivating design, something that matches our #aesthetic and something we can be proud to whip out any time when we are with friends—this is what the Galaxy A54 5G delivers; a premium look that is chic and classy at the same time. Taking its design cues from the ultra-elegant Samsung Galaxy S23 series, the Samsung Galaxy A54 5G is also flaunting a revamped design similar to the flagship line; with Gorilla Glass 5 at the front and back for a premium look, a plastic frame that’s slightly rounded at the side to give you a more comfortable grip and a more high-end in-hand feel of the phone. When it comes to colors, the A54 5G comes in vibrant shades sure to appeal to Gen Z vibes; the funky Awesome Lime, and the classic Awesome Graphite, with the modern-looking Awesome Violet as an online-only offer, giving a nice contrast from the classic shades of the Galaxy S23 series. It also has a refreshed camera module design, getting rid of the camera bump from the latter version, which complements the high-end look of the phone. And like the Galaxy S23 series, this phone also boasts an IP67 water and dust resistance rating, so you are in the clear from both the occasional splash and taking it on the road this summer. Awesome camera In terms of photography, the Samsung Galaxy A54 5G delivers outstanding performance with its triple back camera setup, which lets you capture awesome moments from various perspectives. The new 50MP f/1.8 main camera has a larger sensor with a 1.0µm pixel size that can capture brighter shots than the 64MP f/1.8 primary lens on the Galaxy A53, which has a 0.8µm pixel size. At the back, there is also a 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide lens and a 5MP f/2.4 macro lens. Endless selfies can be taken with a 32MP f/2.2 front-facing camera. The camera’s night mode will let you capture amazing memories in low-light conditions with ease. When it comes to display, this phone packs a brilliant 6.4-inch Super AMOLED panel—which falls in between the Galaxy S23’s 6.1-inch panel and the Galaxy S23+’s 6.6-inch display—with a 120Hz refresh rate and crisp Full HD+ resolution for a watching experience like no other.
