7.2-magnitude quake strikes off Tonga

A powerful 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the Pacific island nation of Tonga on Friday, but no tsunami warning was issued, US monitoring agencies said. The earthquake struck shortly after 7:00 a.m. (1800 GMT Thursday) at a depth of 167 kilometers (103 miles) some 290 kilometers southwest of the capital Nuku'alofa, the United States Geological Survey said. Gary Vite, chief meteorologist at the Tonga Meteorological Services told AFP there were no immediate reports of damage. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said there was no tsunami threat, based on available information. Veisina Sangusangu, a receptionist at the Little Italy Hotel in Nuku'alofa, said the quake lasted about 30 seconds. "It was stronger than the earthquakes we usually feel. The building shook," she added. Tonga sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where tectonic plates often shift, frequently experiencing seismic activity. Magnitude 6.2 quake hits northern Japan: USGS

A strong 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck northern Japan on Sunday, the US Geological Survey said, but there were no immediate reports of damage. The quake hit Hokkaido island at 6:55 pm (0955 GMT). The Japan Meteorological Agency said there was no tsunami alert. It struck just off the coast of Urakawa-cho town in the Hokkaido region at a depth of 123 kilometres (76 miles), the USGS said. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, according to national broadcaster NHK. There were also no abnormalities reported from nuclear facilities in the area, Japan's nuclear regulator said. A local official told NHK the quake caused strong shaking that lasted for 20-30 seconds. "It shook sideways first, then it gradually became stronger," he told the broadcaster. "It felt like a long time, and it was eerie," the official said. hih/pbt © Agence France-Presse The post Magnitude 6.2 quake hits northern Japan: USGS appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Magnitude 7.0 earthquake hits Indonesia: USGS

A 7.0-magnitude earthquake was recorded in the sea north of the main Indonesian island of Java, the US Geological Survey said on Friday, with no immediate reports of damage or casualties. The strong quake struck at 4:55 pm local time (0955 GMT), the USGS said, with Indonesia's geological agency ruling out a tsunami after the epicenter was detected to be at a depth of 594 kilometers (370 miles). Indonesia experiences frequent quakes due to its position on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", an arc of intense seismic activity that stretches from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin. Friday's quake struck roughly 160 kilometers northwest of the city of Surabaya, the country's second-most populous city that is home to more than two million. The tremor was felt over a large part of the island of Java, and as far away as the island of Bali. "In Surabaya, it was barely felt, but some lamps were swaying," said an AFP reporter on the scene, adding that he felt the tremor "for a while". In November, a 5.6-magnitude quake hit West Java province, on the same island, killing 602 people. Most of the victims of that earthquake were killed when buildings collapsed or in landslides triggered by the tremor. A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck off Sumatra island in Indonesia on April 3, shaking homes of panicked residents but causing no casualties or damage.
