Batangas, Zambo, Marikina triumph
Batangas City Embassy Chill's 111-63 drubbing of Quezon City Gaz N Go capped a rash of routs in the OKBet-Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Fifth Season Tuesday at the Batangas City Coliseum. Zamboanga Family's Brand Sardines set the tone of the day with a 92-62 crushing of Laguna Krah Asia followed by the Marikina Shoemasters' 81-68 trouncing of Valenzuela XUR Homes Realty Inc. The Batangas Athletics, however, were more impressive in posting their fifth straight win and sharing the top spot with the idle Nueva Ecija Rice Vanguards, the Muntinlupa Cagers and the Quezon Huskers in the elimination round of the 29-team tournament. Employing a tiring trapping defense while flaunting their firepower, the Athletics, behind Jeckster Apinan and Juneric Baloria, surged to a 95-47 bulge and kept the margin till the end. Apinan wound up with 19 points, 11 rebounds, seven steals, four assists and one block in just 20 minutes and 27 seconds of play to earn best player honors. He was supported by Baloria with 16 points and five boards. Levi Hernandez also delivered for Batangas, the MPBL Anta Rajah Cup champion in 2018, with 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists and so did John Ambulodto with 12 points and four rebounds. With Apinan at the helm, Batangas posted a pivotal 58-40 edge in rebounds as well as steals, 19-8, and handed Quezon City its fifth straight defeat after an initial victory. Andrei Duremdes, son of MPBL commissioner Kenneth Duremdes, scored 16 points, 12 in the fourth quarter, and grabbed eight rebounds in a futile effort to somehow narrow the gap. Only Eduardo Doroteo provided support for the 6-foot-4 Duremdes, however, with 11 points plus six rebounds. Drawing points from 14 players, Zamboanga sealed its fourth win against one loss early in the fourth quarter, 81-42, before shifting to cruise control. Dexter Maiquez came through with 14 points and 10 rebounds, followed by Judel Fuentes and Ralph Tansico with 13 points each and Jayvee Marcelino with 12 as Zamboanga pulled down Laguna to 2-4. Reigning MPBL Most Valuable Player Jaycee Marcelino settled for eight points with Chris Dumapig, who snagged eight rebounds, as the Zamboangueños showed the form that clinched the 2023 MPBL Preseason Invitationals crown. Marikina, sparked by homegrown Letran Knight Kyle Tolentino, led from start to finish en route to a 3-2 record. Tolentino fired 13 points, followed by Felipe Chavez and Marwin Dionisio with 10 each and Raymond Casajeros and Deo Timajo with nine each as Marikina dealt Valenzuela its fifth straight defeat. 2 Abu Sayyaf members yield
ZAMBOANGA CITY — The Naval Forces Western Mindanao disclosed on Wednesday that two individuals believed to be members of the Abu Sayyaf Group voluntarily surrendered and turned over their high-caliber firearms to combined government forces in Basilan province as a gesture of sincerity in returning back to the folds of the law. NFWM commander Rear Adm. Donn Anthony Miraflor said that the two former ASG gunmen were presented to him at the NFWM located at Bagong Calarian on Tuesday. Miraflor said the NFWM — through its operating units together with JTF-Basilan and counterparts from National Intelligence Coordinating Agency-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao — successfully facilitated the surrender of the two notorious former ASGs. He identified the two former ASG members as Adzhar Usman Langkang and Karasan Turabin Anta, both were members of a Basilan-based ASG sub-leader identified as a certain Junga. Langkang and Anta also turned over one cal. 30 M1 Garand Rifle and one M16 Rifle with magazines and ammunition. The two ASG members said that the series of encounters they had with government forces in Kauluan Island, Albarka, Basilan province on 29 March prompted them to surrender and to seek a new life in the community. They also admitted that most of them are now experiencing hardship due to the series of Focus Military Operations being conducted by the military against them, Basilan-based ASG, Miraflor said. He also asked the Joint Task Force-Basilan for proper documentation and disposition of the case and to include Langkang and Anta in Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program and Program Against Violent Extremism for ASG members in Basilan province. Military data showed that the ASG and other criminal organized groups continue to suffer a decrease in number of followers due to the FMO and lucrative government programs available to ASG and other insurgents. Meanwhile, in Cotabato province, a civilian identified as Romeo Baay handed over unexploded ordnance to the soldiers of the Joint Task Force Central which he discovered at Purok Tagumpay Barangay Pisan, Kabacan, Cotabato province. JTF-C commander Maj. Gen. Alex Rillera said that Baay, a resident of Barangay Pisan, Kabacan, Cotabato, voluntarily surrendered one round of 60MM mortar ammunition to the troops at Pisan Patrol Base. Rillera lauded Baay for making the right decision as a result of the harmonious relationship we have built with the community. The UXO was later turned over by the soldiers from Pisan Patrol Base to the 90th Infantry Battalion based in Barangay Lower Paatan, Kabacan, Cotabato for proper disposition.
